Abstract:
I) et profanes (ch.
A monograph which professes primarily to examine the question at the root of les Serees: are they an analytical report of the evenings that G. Bouchet would have attented in Poitiers, or rather a purely fictional work he would have devised after his readings? The first part, countenancing the first proposition, introduces G. Bouchet, a bookseller and printer (I), evokes the various stages of a typical poitevin evening (II), the Poitou of the time (III), the topics of the conversations : health and disease (IV), woman in her nature and her different functions (V), social conditions (from the prince to "social outcasts") and institutions (VI), ancient (VII) and modern people (VIII) and eventually a reflexion on "rationalism and the scientific mind" from the speakers (IX). The second part, tackling the second proposition, lists G. Bouchet's borrowings from ancient authors (both of religious (I) and secular (II books) to moder ones (writers of miscellanies and of readings (III), doctors and naturalists (IV), demonologists (V), cosmographers and historians (VI), jurists, moralists and politicians (VII), fiction writers (VIII), playwrights and poets (IX). The third part studies the making of the collection : the way G. Bouchet compiles and recorders his borrowings into notebooks whose titles foreshadow those of les Serees (I); the formal variety of the copied scraps (II), the general architecture of the book (III), the treatment of the spoken parts (IV) and of the narratives (V) to conclude with the specificity of G. Bouchet's creation and the uniqueness of les Serees, as a "motley tale"

Abstract:
After the failure of the urban French League, one generally thinks that the history of towns only was a subjection to the restaured autority of the Bourbonian Kings. Lyon's case, from the end of XVIth century to about the middle of XVIIth century, allows to try this interpretation. By understanding the political, not only as an administration, the building of modern State can be read more significantly. .

Lister, Kevin. "A measurement system for, and the measurement of, single particle energies in quantum dots." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1999. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1594/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the design, development, construction and performance of an instrumentation system suitable for the measurement of single electron quantum dot devices. The inaugural measurement with this new system produced fascinating experimental data from a novel magnetic spectrometer device. This data, presented in chapter 5, suggests that it is possible to measure the single particle spacing in a 500nm quantum dot device independent of the Coulomb blockade energy and within an electron mean free path. Devices were defined on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, the interface of which formed a 2 dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The surface was patterned with metallic surface gates. On the application of a potential to the gates, the electrons were depleted from beneath the gate and the pattern was transferred to the 2DEG. The devices were fabricated in a Hall bar geometry using standard nanofabrication techniques. Measurements were performed using a 3He/4He Kelvinox 25 dilution refrigerator unit at a lattice temperature of TL45mK. Prior to the work detailed in this thesis the lowest effective electron temperature available to quantum transport researchers at Glasgow had been 1.2 Kelvin. This was achieved with the use of a pumped 4He variable temperature insert (VTI), for which 1.2K represented the lowest working temperature. Although a 3He/4He dilution unit had been available for some time, the unit had exhibited an effective electron temperature of Te>7K. As a direct result of the work contained within this thesis (detailed in chapter 4), the lower limit of the effective electron temperature range available was extended down to 250mK. This represents an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over the lowest effective electron temperature previously available and an improvement of >20 over that previously available within the dilution limit. In order to achieve this improvement a systems approach was adopted. The individual subsystems associated with the design of the new measurement system were designed to work in conjunction with one another. Great care was taken with respect to referencing potentials, shielding, intrinsic noise of the electronic components used and vibration isolation in order that the measurement system imposed the minimum induced electron heating on the device under test. Measurements were performed on quantum dot devices in the Coulomb blockade regime. Periodic peaks in the conductance of a quantum dot were observed. These conductance peaks were seen in response to an applied gate voltage, and are referred to as Coulomb oscillations. Such oscillations are a result of classical charging effects due to the addition or subtraction of a single electron to, or from, the quantum dot. These effects are a direct result of the quantisation of charge. Energy quantisation due to the confinement of the electrons wave-function, also plays a role in quantum dot devices. In the devices studied the classical charging energy, that gives rise to the Coulomb oscillations is generally an order of magnitude greater than the quantum mechanical effects that give rise to the single particle spectrum.

Bibi, Hamida. "Pollution effects on body mass distributions of freshwater benthic communities." Thesis, University of York, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1594/.

Full text
Abstract:
Theoretical studies of the resilience of ecological systems to environmental change predict that the size distributions of species in ecosystems should have discontinuities that reflect similar discontinuities in ecosystem processes. Body size distributions should have many peaks and troughs (modes) for natural, undisturbed ecosystems, but that as disturbances increases, so the number of modes declines. If so, this prediction has implications for assessing the quality of real ecological systems and has potential for environmental monitoring. This research was carried out to explore the relationship between water quality and body size patterns in benthic communities in order to establish the potential of size based indicators for assessing environmental condition, as well as testing Holling's (1992) proposition that lumpiness occurs in body size distributions across a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. The invertebrate samples were collected from both lentic and lotic habitats including rivers, ponds and canals in Yorkshire, UK, known to experience different degree of pollution. Five stations on the River Ure system and nine sites on the River Aire were sampled for moving water while eight stations were sampled for static (canals and ponds) habitats in the area South East of York. Community Abundance, BMWP score, water conductivity and ASPT analysis confirmed varying water quality among these sites. Visual observation of body mass pattern showed skewed distributions towards smaller size classes and most had two very obvious modes at medium and large size classes except for the most polluted habitats. Similarly, statistically rigorous estimates using Kernel Density Analysis (KDE) revealed highly significant relationships between the number of modes and water quality for running water. However, this study was unable to firmly relate discontinuities in body mass distributions to water quality in static water bodies and in fact the relationship appear to be the opposite of those found for moving water. Analysis of the number of gaps, using Holling's (1992) Body Mass Difference Index (BMDI), revealed wide variation in clean and intermediate water quality sites, though the most polluted site had the fewest gaps. However, other disturbed sites had more gaps and some clean sites had fewer gaps. It is clear that size distributions in benthic communities are lumpy, in the sense that most sites showed more than one mode or many gaps, but the number of gaps (discontinuities) is not always correlated with disturbance, at least for the water quality of freshwater systems.

Chrysochos, Neophytos Elia. "Information systems and organisational change : the case of flexible specialisation in Cyprus." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1594/.

Abstract:
This research examines the relationship between organisational change and information systems development in the case of an effort to implement flexible specialisation in Cyprus. In the centre of this research are the inter-organisational relationships developed in the flexible specialisation initiative and the role IT played in the formation of such relationships. Successively, the kind of organisational changes that take place as well as the driving force(s) of such changes are examined. In order to study and analyse such a complicated socio economic phenomenon an interpretive epistemology was adopted. Analysis of the empirical work draws mainly from theories concerning information systems while insights are drawn from disciplines that have studied organisational change and the concept of flexible specialisation in particular, such as industrial economics, geography and organisational theory. The research method followed is a multiple case study analysis. One case study was conducted in Emilia-Romagna and provides a point for reference for the cases of flexible specialisation in Cyprus, which is the main focus of the research. The case study in Cyprus was conducted over a period of three years, while the case study in Emilia-Romagna was done at one particular point in time. The key contribution of this research is the suggestion that the use of information and communication technologies depends on the complexity of the inter-organisational activities, rather than causing them, as the information systems literature tends to suggest. Furthermore, the case study demonstrates the significance of institutional and cultural factors for the non-emergence of inter-organisational complexity, and subsequent limited role attributed to IT in the flexible specialisation experiment.

MacDonald, Mary Jacqueline. "Silent shadows : supernumeraries in British court masques, 1594-1640." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7193/.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the contribution and significance in performance of supernumeraries in British court masques, 1594-1640. The six selected masques include a variety of performance venues and authors, with offerings by an assortment of monarchs (and others). There is also a range of performance dates between 1594 and 1640, including: a Scottish court masque and an Elizabethan court masque, two Jacobean masques, and two Caroline court masques, which were performed for or with a variety of monarchs or their consorts. The thesis is driven by practice-based research in relation to the venue, staging, costumes, props, lighting, and blocking with a view to determine the contribution and significance of these performers. Whilst mute roles are the focus of the analysis, this does not include either musicians or the main masquers. The investigation suggests the non-speaking supernumeraries were significant roles in performance and offered a contribution to the genre.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a re-examination of the expulsion, return and subsequent integration of the Jesuits into France during the reign of Henry IV and the regency of Marie de Medicis (1594- 1615). Drawing on archival material from Paris, Rome and London, it argues that in order to understand the Society of Jesus's role in seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century France one must understand the circumstances of their return. The critical moment for the Society in France, this study contends, was the promulgation of the Edict of Rouen in 1603, not their expulsion in 1594. The Edict and the royal goodwill which sanctioned it gave the Society a legal standing in France and established a set of conditions which formed the basis for a new Jesuit role in the French church and wider society. Moreover, the Edict of Rouen was more than just an attempt by Henry IV to bring peace to the Catholic church; it was also an important assertion of royal authority in the French church. Indeed, I argue that the return of the Society exclusively through royal clemency or grâce defined an important alliance between the monarchy and the Jesuits which was to be a significant feature of the French church for more than a century. Although numerous historians have already looked at various aspects of this important topic, this thesis is the first to argue that the most important development of this period for our understanding of the Society's position and role in France was the accommodation of the Society by the French church and French royal administrative structures after the king's will was expressed in 1603. It also asserts that it was the reality of compromise not the rhetoric of conflict which should shape our understanding of the Society's integration into France and their role in the French church in the seventeenth century.

Vives, i.

Full text
Abstract:

The particles that constitute the real systems have, normally, several degrees of freedom: positional, orientational, conformational, etc. The study of a complete phase diagram cannot be done by the mere superposition of simple models because the different degrees of freedom interfere and coupling phenomena appear. Several examples are: magnetic binary alloys, liquid crystals, etc.

Other systems whose behaviours can also be regarded as the result of coupling are alloys undergoing structural phase transitions and systems of adsorbed molecules on substrates. In this work we have focused our attention in three problems related to coupling between degrees of freedom: (a) First of all we have developed a microscopic model for Liquid Crystals. It is based on a lattice-gas 2-dimensional model that includes orientational degrees of freedom for the molecules. It reproduces qualitatively well the experimental phase diagrams of a number of liquid crystal mixtures, the existence of a tri-critical point in the Smectic-Nematic transition line, and a continuous variation of the effective critical exponents. (b) A second work has been the study of BCC binary alloys that undergo structural phase transitions to packed phases at low temperature, and also exhibit atomic reordering phenomena at higher temperatures. Coupling phenomena between the structural degrees of freedom and the configurational atomic order can appear by means of quenches starting at temperatures in the range where atomic reordering is operative. We have studied how the elastic constants depend on the configurational order and we have justified the dependence of the structural transition temperature upon the starting temperature of the quench. (c) Finally we have studied systems of adsorbed molecules on substrates. We have proposed a model that splits the positional degrees of freedom of the particles: on the one hand it considers variables associated with the jumps of the particles between neighbouring wells of the corrugation potential and on the other hand it considers continuous degrees of freedom associated with the movement of particles inside the wells. Monte Carlo simulation allows the study of the solid-liquid phase transition for different values of the corrugation potential. In the limit of flat substrate our results show a coexisting zone with hexatic properties between the solid and liquid phases. For big enough corrugation potential the simulated structure factors are in agreement with the results of previous theorie s found in the literature.

Wang, Yan. "New advances in synchronization of digital communication receivers." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
Synchronization is a challenging but very important task in communications. In digital communication systems, a hierarchy of synchronization problems has to be considered: carrier synchronization, symbol timing synchronization and frame synchronization. For bandwidth efficiency and burst transmission reasons, the former two synchronization steps tend to favor non-data aided (NDA or blind) techniques, while in general, the last one is usually solved by inserting repetitively known bits or words into the data sequence, and is referred to as a data-aided (DA) approach. Over the last two decades, extensive research work has been carried out to design nondata-aided timing recovery and carrier synchronization algorithms. Despite their importance and spread use, most of the existing blind synchronization algorithms are derived in an ad-hoc manner without exploiting optimally the entire available statistical information. In most cases their performance is evaluated by computer simulations, rigorous and complete performance analysis has not been performed yet. It turns out that a theoretical oriented approach is indispensable for studying the limit or bound of algorithms and comparing different methods. The main goal of this dissertation is to develop several novel signal processing frameworks that enable to analyze and improve the performance of the existing timing recovery and carrier synchronization algorithms. As byproducts of this analysis, unified methods for designing new computationally and statistically efficient (i.e., minimum variance estimators) blind feedforward synchronizers are developed. Our work consists of three tightly coupled research directions. First, a general and unified framework is proposed to develop optimal nonlinear least-squares (NLS) carrier recovery scheme for burst transmissions. A family of blind constellation-dependent optimal "matched" NLS carrier estimators is proposed for synchronization of burst transmissions fully modulated by PSK and QAM-constellations in additive white Gaussian noise channels. Second, a cyclostationary statistics based framework is proposed for designing computationally and statistically efficient robust blind symbol timing recovery for time-selective flat-fading channels. Lastly, dealing with the problem of frame synchronization, a simple and efficient data-aided approach is proposed for jointly estimating the frame boundary, the frequency-selective channel and the carrier frequency offset.

Letele-Matabooe, Makatleho Julia. "An investigation into the factors influencing the levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment of non-family employees working in family businesses." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the increasingly important role that non-family employees working in family businesses play in the success of these businesses, as well as the challenges they are faced with, it is surprising that little is known about their experiences in the family business. This study therefore was aimed at contributing to the more effective functioning of this important stakeholder group in South Africa by identifying the factors that impact on their levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment in family businesses. As such the primary objective of this study was to identify the factors that impact on non-family employees’ levels of Job satisfaction and Organisational commitment to the family business in which they are employed. This study sought to incorporate prior findings and theories on job satisfaction and organisational commitment into a comprehensive theoretical model. In addition, support for these theories was sought in the literature. The literature review revealed three main categories of constructs, namely, relational-based, organisational-based and reward-based factors, as influencing the levels of Job satisfaction and Organisational commitment of non-family employees working in family businesses. Within these three categories, 15 independent variables were identified and hypothesised to influence the levels of the dependent variables Job satisfaction and Organisational commitment. Of the 15 independent variables, 6 were categorised as relational-based, another 6 as organisational-based and 3 as reward-based factors. All of the constructs in this study were clearly defined and operationalised. Operationalisation was done by using reliable and valid items sourced from measuring instruments used by prior studies. In addition, several items were selfgenerated items based on secondary sources. The convenience snowball sampling technique was used to identify respondents, and a structured questionnaire was made available to them. The data collected 280 usable questionnaires and was subjected to various statistical analyses. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument was assessed by means of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and Cronbach-alpha coefficients were confirmed for this purpose. v The 6 relational-based factors could not all be confirmed as initially intended. Of these factors, 5 were confirmed. Similarly, the organisational-based factors could not all be confirmed by the exploratory factor analysis. Four factors were confirmed in this regard. With regard to reward-based factors, these factors did not load as originally intended. Instead, a new factor (Job security and compensation) emerged. In this study, a number of statistical procedures were utilised to assess the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. These included descriptive statistics which was used to summarise the sample data. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was also undertaken to establish the relationship between the various factors under investigation. However, the main statistical procedure that was used to test the significance of the relationships hypothesised between the independent and dependent variables was the Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA). From the analysis, 7 submodels were identified and subjected to further testing. The following independent variables were identified as influencing the dependent variables in this study: Fairness; Personal needs alignment; Interpersonal relationships; Family harmony; Nature of the work; Working conditions; Job involvement; Governance; Job security and compensation. In addition, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed to establish the influence that the various demographic variables could have on the dependent variables. The test included the use of Benferroni post-hoc test that was used to vi assess the statistical difference, while Cohen’s d-values were calculated to assess the practical significance between mean scores. Ownership of shares by non-family employees of the family business in which they are employed, the positions that these employees hold, as well as ethnicity of the respondents have been found to have an influence on the independent and dependent variables in this study. This study has empirically investigated the challenges non-family employees working in family businesses are faced with, and has thus added to the limited amount of family business literature on this valuable stakeholder group. The theoretical model developed in this study has made a significant contribution towards understanding the factors that influence the levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment of these employees. This study therefore presents recommendations and suggestions to assist family business leaders/owners in attracting and retaining non-family businesses in such a way as to give them a sense of belonging and to enhance the performance of their businesses.

Abstract:
With the introduction of new input devices, such as multi-touch surface displays, the Nintendo WiiMote, the Microsoft Kinect, and the Leap Motion sensor, among others, the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) finds itself at an important crossroads that requires solving new challenges. Given the amount of three-dimensional (3D) data available today, 3D navigation plays an important role in 3D User Interfaces (3DUI). This dissertation deals with multi-touch, 3D navigation, and how users can explore 3D virtual worlds using a multi-touch, non-stereo, desktop display. The contributions of this dissertation include a feature-extraction algorithm for multi-touch displays (FETOUCH), a multi-touch and gyroscope interaction technique (GyroTouch), a theoretical model for multi-touch interaction using high-level Petri Nets (PeNTa), an algorithm to resolve ambiguities in the multi-touch gesture classification process (Yield), a proposed technique for navigational experiments (FaNS), a proposed gesture (Hold-and-Roll), and an experiment prototype for 3D navigation (3DNav). The verification experiment for 3DNav was conducted with 30 human-subjects of both genders. The experiment used the 3DNav prototype to present a pseudo-universe, where each user was required to find five objects using the multi-touch display and five objects using a game controller (GamePad). For the multi-touch display, 3DNav used a commercial library called GestureWorks in conjunction with Yield to resolve the ambiguity posed by the multiplicity of gestures reported by the initial classification. The experiment compared both devices. The task completion time with multi-touch was slightly shorter, but the difference was not statistically significant. The design of experiment also included an equation that determined the level of video game console expertise of the subjects, which was used to break down users into two groups: casual users and experienced users. The study found that experienced gamers performed significantly faster with the GamePad than casual users. When looking at the groups separately, casual gamers performed significantly better using the multi-touch display, compared to the GamePad. Additional results are found in this dissertation.

Full text
Abstract:
A long term study of fish populations on the Bonaparte Plateau, B.C., has revealed the possibility of 2-year cyclic recruitment variation in the pygmy pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus oregonensis). This thesis reviews possible causes of the cycle, and evaluates an inexpensive and non-destructive visual survey method to estimate juvenile population numbers over short summer periods while pikeminnow juveniles are recruiting to the lakes and dying rapidly, for use in future studies of the cyclic pattern. To provide an index of the abundance of juvenile pikeminnow, strip-transect surveys were conducted from shore. Each strip transect area was a full circumference of each of three study lakes, and extended from shore to a distance of up to 3 meters offshore. The visual surveys were shown to be accurate and repeatable when estimating the number of fish and the lengths of the fish in a shoal. The strip transects provide an index of abundance for juvenile northern pikeminnow and this index of abundance can be used to calculate daily summer and interannual mortality rates, providing estimates close to those predicted from the Lorenzen model for size-dependent mortality rates of fish in general. Stationary point surveys were also conducted to investigate juvenile pikeminnow behaviour, and these point surveys reveal a link between sunlight intensity and pikeminnow activity, and provide evidence of direct agonistic interactions between age 0 and age 1 juveniles, which could result in higher mortality rates of age 0 fish when age 1 fish are abundant. Analysis of survey data collected to date over five years from three lakes supports the possibility of a recruitment cycle with lakes out of phase with each other, suggesting that ecological interactions drive the cycles. These interactions are worthy of further investigation.

Awad, Nadia. "On reducing the decoding complexity of shingled magnetic recording system." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1594.

Abstract:
Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) has been recognised as one of the alternative technologies to achieve an areal density beyond the limit of the perpendicular recording technique, 1 Tb/in2, which has an advantage of extending the use of the conventional method media and read/write head. This work presents SMR system subject to both Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter Track Interference (ITI) and investigates different equalisation/detection techniques in order to reduce the complexity of this system. To investigate the ITI in shingled systems, one-track one-head system model has been extended into two-track one-head system model to have two interfering tracks. Consequently, six novel decoding techniques have been applied to the new system in order to find the Maximum Likelihood (ML) sequence. The decoding complexity of the six techniques has been investigated and then measured. The results show that the complexity is reduced by more than three times with 0.5 dB loss in performance. To measure this complexity practically, perpendicular recording system has been implemented in hardware. Hardware architectures are designed for that system with successful Quartus II fitter which are: Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) channel, digital filter equaliser with and without Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and ideal channel architectures. Two different hardware designs are implemented for Viterbi Algorithm (VA), however, Quartus II fitter for both of them was unsuccessful. It is found that, Simulink/Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Builder based designs are not efficient for complex algorithms and the eligible solution for such designs is writing Hardware Description Language (HDL) codes for those algorithms.

Smith, Mary Inez. "Acute restraint stress-induced spatio-temporal activation of neurons in discrete subregions of the adult male rat brain." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2014. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
The inner workings of the smallest neural structures have been mysterious in function since they were discovered. Even more interesting are the modes and methods by which an internal reaction is waged as a result of an external stimulus. This is especially true if the stimulus is not inherently or physically painful or harmful, but rather emotional. Stress, for example has a major deleterious effect on the brain. However, exactly how different brain regions work together to react to stress is largely unknown. The primary goal of this study was to further understand how neurons within the topography of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the brain's hypothalamus are altered during the whole-organism stress response. A significant proportion of PVN and SON cells are made up of nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS)-containing neu rons. Previous studies have shown that a single acute restraint paradigm differentially ac tivates NO-producing endogenous machinery within these hypothalamic areas. However, the temporal activation profile of restraint-induced NOS reactivity within the PVN and SON remains to be clearly determined. In this study, several techniques were used in cluding the following: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d, a histochemical NOS index), im- munohistochemistry for Fos, caspase acti vated DNAase (CAD, an enzyme that cleaves chromosomal DNA in apoptotic cells), and phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERKl/2; a signaling pathway preferentially activated in response to growth factors and regulator of cell proliferation and differentiation). We have analyzed the pattern of this neural activation in response to stress in adult male Wistar rats in the SON and PVN after the animals were placed in a restraint device for one-, three- or six- hours and compared the results to those of unre strained rats. The aim was to determine the temporal profile of restraint-induced activa tion of the NO production machinery within the SON and PVN. As Recruitment of neuronal pools is a well-recognized concept of the function of hypothalamic neurons. The present observations suggest a progressive recruitment of nitrergic neurons within these neuronal domains during whole animal exposure to stress. In sum, the data from the pre sent observations extend our understanding of the discrete temporal reorganization of the PVN and SON and their involvement in signal processing during the stress response.

CAPES
The strawberry is a pseudo fruit, much appreciated for its taste, aroma and nutritional properties. It is a potential source of bioactive compounds, with an emphasis on phenolic compounds and vitamin C, and these compounds present various biological functions, including antioxidant activity, which bring benefits to health. The culture of this pseudofruit is the economical basis of many municipalities, especially in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, by the fact that these regions represent about 90% of the cultivated area in the country. The strawberry has an important economic and social role in the Vale do Caí region in Rio Grande do Sul, with a significant production, making this pseudofruit highlighted, particularly in the municipality of Bom Princípio. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to evaluate the physicochemical parameters, bioactive substances and antioxidant activity in strawberries grown in Bom Princípio, analyzing the influence of different cultivars in different farming systems. The research was carried out in two stages, and the strawberries were collected from a sampling plan. In the first stage, the cultivars of Camarosa, Camino Real and San Andreas, produced in conventional soil cultivation system, were analyzed. In the second, the cultivars of Festival and San Andreas produced in organic and conventional cultivation systems, in substrate, were analyzed. The pH parameters, total soluble solids (TSS) and total titratable acidity (TTA), TSS and TTA correlation, anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, vitamin C, calcium, sodium, potassium and color were determined. As for the results of the first stage, all the cultivars produced in conventional soil, Camino Real, San Andreas and Camarosa presented a TSS content above the minimum recommended by the Brazilian legislation (7,5 ° Brix) and TTA up to 0,8%. Which corresponds to a pleasant taste. Camarosa presented the highest levels of the TSS/TTA ratio and, of all the cultivars, it was observed that the pH of this cultivar was in agreement with the pH range established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 3 to 3,9, presenting Higher average contents of both anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds. The cultivar San Andreas presented the highest calcium content, while the highest levels of sodium and potassium were obtained by the Camarosa cultivar. In the second stage, all the surveyed cultivars, Festival and San Andreas, organic and conventional, in substrate, presented an TSS content below the recommended minimum. The Organic Festival cultivars, Conventional Festival and Organic San Andreas presented TTA values according to the maximum acceptable and the Festival cultivar, both organic and conventional, presented the highest values in relation to the TSS/TTA ratio. The pH of all the cultivars studied was within the range defined by the FDA. In relation to the amount of anthocyanins, the Organic Festival cultivar had the highest concentration, and the highest content of total phenolic compounds was obtained by the conventional San Andreas cultivar. The Organic Festival cultivar presented the highest calcium content and conventional Festival obtained the highest sodium value, while the highest potassium content was obtained by conventional San Andreas. The Festival and San Andreas cultivars, produced in the conventional system, on substrate, showed higher vitamin C content when compared to the same cultivars produced in the organic system. Although, in relation to the antioxidant activity, the highest concentrations were obtained in the organic cultivation system, for the Festival and San Andreas cultivars. Concerning the color, the cultivar Festival organic indicated a more intense red coloration. It was found that several aspects influence the physical and chemical properties and levels of bioactive compounds surveyed in strawberries, namely: genetic factors, nutrition used on cultivars, soil characteristics and substrates, electrical conductivity of the substrates and nutrient solutions and weather conditions (sun, temperature, humidity) of the strawberry cultivation environment. Finally, this research provides basis for farmers among with technical professionals from the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (EMATER), so then the work that has been developed can be continued, in order to observe what can be improved in respect to cultivation practices, including nutrition and substrates usage, seeking to grow increasingly tastier and more nutritious strawberries.

Viquez-Abarca, Rosibel. "Public higher education, the knowledge economy and regional development in Costa Rica." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1594.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns, firstly, the role of public higher education institutions, in particular the Distance Learning University (UNED), in the new economy model being encouraged in Costa Rica and, secondly, the role that public higher education could play in an alternative model of development which is more socially and regionally balanced. Until the 1980s, Costa Rica possessed a well-governed and stable political-economy but imbalanced at the same time since it promoted uneven development between the central region on the one hand and the peripheral regions on the other. Since the mid-1990s, the country has developed a strategy to move from an export-led growth economy to one based on foreign direct investment. In such a scenario, the Knowledge-Based Economy model was introduced as an option to speed up the pace of development. Nonetheless, the new model has faced several changes to the original plan. It moved from an open economy attracting high technology investment to practically any kind of foreign direct investment (FDI). The resulting model has implied negative consequences in terms of sustainability and social development. One consequence is a minimum impact on the skill level of the work force. Another consequence has been a low level of investment in infrastructure (particularly in peripheral areas). Additionally some of these activities favoured by the new model imply damage to the natural environment. The present research shows that the new model of the Costa Rican economy still encourages uneven development, generating different trajectories of growth not only among the regions but also inside them. In terms of the public universities, the institutional transformation that is taking place globally prompts these institutions to solve the problems of the labour market through supplying the necessary trained people. Three key questions were addressed in this thesis, in order to present a perspective on the Costa Rican process: (1) Has Costa Rica become a more Knowledge-Based Economy in the last 30 years?; (2) What role have public universities played in this and what role has UNED specifically played?; and (3) How could UNED contribute in order to accomplish a more regionally-balanced Knowledge-Based Economy model? Drawing on quantitative data and interviews with actors from different sectors, the research demonstrates that Costa Rica has been endorsing an open economy, where the attraction of FDI is related not only to high technology industry, as the Knowledge-Based Economy model assumes, but to change in all of the traditional economic sectors of the country. Paradoxically, the companies of the new economy are looking for those qualified to technician-level, rather than to those with higher-level qualifications. In terms of the institutional transformation, public universities in general and UNED in particular are immersed in stress promoted by at least four contradictory internal and external discourses. One is the entrepreneurial university discourse which is a properly discourse of the KBE, close to utilitarian approaches. Second is the university as entrepreneur’s promoters. The third is the university as a central government partner to attract FDI. The fourth is the traditional discourse of state-funded educational institutions’ mandate for education to build collective responsibility and social justice. Finally, in terms of an alternative role, the thesis presents an option for the public universities to challenge the territorial inequalities implicit within current strategies by focusing more on the peripheral territories.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMus (Music))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
This study consists of two parts. The first part focuses primarily on literature that discusses the biography in general, and then turns its focus more sharply on the music biography. A critical reading of three South African music biographies is conducted in order to identify tendencies or patterns in the biographical writing of musicians, especially performers. The second part of this thesis consists of a biographical case study of Pack. This particular biography makes no claim that it will not be faced with the same problems illustrated in the general discussion on biography as a discipline, but rather through the established critical frame claims to qualify and critically elucidate the biographical writing pertaining to Pack. This case study will underline one of the defining elements in the writing of lives of those figures who are considered less important, namely the limited resource material that tend to replicate the themes and stereotypes inherent in biographical writing. This practical problem causes an inevitable repetition of the intellectual difficulties of biographical writing. The purpose of this biography, which is the combination of different source materials and, is not necessarily to avoid these “myths”, but to identify it by critical reflection. With this approach, it is not the biography itself that becomes “critical”, but rather the reading and comprehension of the biography. Finally, the conclusion is reached that Betty Pack’s life as committed to paper and memory displays various themes and topoi characteristic of the music biography in general, rather than just the biographies of performers. The conventions of music biography, as consolidated in the biographical descriptions of composers, thus still provide the norms and forms for the biography of the performing artist.

Devine, Steven M. "Petrographic Controls on Weathering of the Haney Limestone." TopSCHOLAR®, 2016. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1594.

Abstract:
Although karst processes in south central Kentucky have been studied extensively, the Haney Limestone Member of the Golconda Formation has not been studied in detail in contrast to limestones stratigraphically below it that are thicker. In addition, the relationship between petrographic features of the Haney Limestone and the formation of caves and karst features has not been studied extensively compared to lithographic, petrographic, or structural variables Petrographic data were collected using core and surface exposures across the study area of south central Kentucky from northern Logan and Warren counties up toward the Rough Creek Graben region, and stratigraphic columns were constructed. Twenty-three petrographic thin-sections were made from samples collected at these sites, described, and photo documented. These studies have revealed that grain size and silica content play a role in how the Haney weathers both in surface exposure and in a cave setting. Petrographic thin-section analysis suggests that the Haney possesses a complex diagenetic history that involves several generations of calcite cementation, dolomitization, silicification, and pressure-dissolution features in the form of microstylolites and stylolites. A basal shale in the Big Clifty occurs commonly at the Big Clifty/Haney contact and acts as a confining hydrogeologic unit, which is favorable for the development of springs and caves. Studying the Haney Limestone petrographically provides an opportunity not only to study a lesser known unit, but also in the context of relating petrographic influences or controls on the morphology of Haney cave-passage development under both vadose and phreatic hydrologic regimens. Heretofore, the vast majority of cave morphological studies have only linked the hydrologic regimen to formation of cave passages, but such studies have not considered petrographic variance. This study not only relates karst features to petrographic variance, but also provides a petrographical description of the Haney across south central Kentucky, whereas many previous studies focused on Illinois and Indiana. Understanding Haney petrographic characteristics also provides context for potential carbonate hydrocarbon reservoirs and groundwater resources in the Illinois Basin region.

This work falls under the syllabus of the 4th year of the Bachelor of Nursing, University Fernando Pessoa, and the subject is "Knowledge of breastfeeding mothers about the influence of pacifier use on breastfeeding" The pacifier is widely used in many countries as an important cultural habit. However, it is a subject not much explored yet, the pacifier use and its influence on breastfeeding, this study emerges from self-interest on the knowledge of nursing mothers on the use of pacifiers on breastfeeding. Thus emerge as research questions: What effect does the use of pacifiers in breastfed babies? What knowledge of nursing mothers, about the use of pacifier? How important that mothers who breast-feed, attach to the use of pacifier? What are the reasons why breastfeeding mothers, to introduce the pacifier to the baby? And so, outlined the following objectives: To determine the incidence of pacifier use in infants breastfed; describe the knowledge of nursing mothers, about the use of pacifiers; understand the importance of breastfeeding mothers, attach to the use of pacifiers; Meet the reasons why breastfeeding mothers, the use of pacifiers. The methodology used is descriptive in nature simple, inserted a qualitative approach, cross-cutting a sample of 23 breastfeeding mothers of residential Eiriz, which was used as an instrument of data collection a questionnaire response closed. Data processing was performed using the SPSS version 17.0. In this study highlight the following results: the vast majority of mothers had knowledge about the use of pacifiers on breastfeeding: effects of pacifier, care of the pacifier, age to withdraw. Having received much, in clinical prenatal monitoring. Regarding the situation of the dyad in breastfeeding, most initiated breastfeeding in the first hours of life, not having trouble starting. Those who had difficulties were because they had cracked nipple, types of nipples, mastitis, insufficient milk, baby refusing to nurse and because the baby cried a lot. This study showed a high incidence of pacifier use. The reasons that led mothers to introduce the pacifier to your baby was in need of baby crying, soothe, satisfy the sucking habits, agitated. And they believe that pacifier use does not contribute to early weaning.

Abstract:

This work presents and debates the results of applying query expansion techniques such as Pseudo Relevance Feedback (PRF) and Relevance Feedback (RF) in an Information Retrieval System (IRS) that uses the information retrieval model TR+. TR+ makes use of terms and Binary Lexical Relationships (BLR) that appear in texts and queries in order to index and retrieve textual documents in Portuguese. The application of the query expansion techniques PRR and RR aims to improve the results provided by the users' queries therefore the documents retrieved are able to fulfill their needs. PRR and RR differ with respect to the users' role: while relevance feedback makes use of the user judgment for defining which documents retrieved by the original query will provide the information for QE, PRF seeks to automate such decision processo The experimental results using PRF and RF did not outperform the baseline results (Gonzalez, 2005). When comparing both techniques, we have noticed PRF was outperformed by RF only once. In the context of this dissertation, we can conclude that the use of BLRs is a more productive option when compared to the use of terms for QE.

Thesis (MTech (Tourism and Hospitality Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008.
Research shows that Cape Town has become one of the most popular and prestigious destinations to visit and has opened its doors to minor and major events worldwide. Successful annual events that have become established in Cape Town, nationally and internationally, include events such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Cape Outdoor Adventure and Travel show, Community Chest Carnival, Design Indaba, Design for Living, Homemakers Expo, Cape Argus Cycle Tour, as well as the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and the Cape Town International Kite Festival. Venues such as the Cape Town International Convention Centre have become an international trademark and host large events such as the World Diabetes Conference. These events and venues have placed Cape Town in the world’s top ten destinations to visit. Cape Town is currently preparing for the 2010 Soccer World Cup which places much focus on Risk Management and Compliance. Risk Management concerns predictions and preventions and is described as a process of continuous improvement, which is directed towards effective management of potential opportunities and adverse effects that would impact the event. Risk management plays an important role in the planning and organising of these major events. The aim of this study has determined what the common risks were that event stakeholders within the City of Cape Town have found difficult to manage and have regularly encountered. Risk Management has become one of the most important operational domains within the Event Industry within Cape Town, as well as on a global scale. Since Cape Town has become a global player within the events arena, in terms of major events, much focus has been on risk responsibility and accountability.

Abstract:

I studied highly specialized pollination systems involving Neotropical Araceae and scarab beetles of the tribe Cyclocephalini (Scarabaeidae, Dynastinae), and also scrutinized aspects of the ontogeny and egg development of captivity bred and reared species of Cyclocephala. Flower-visiting male and female Cyclocephala celata and C. Latericia exhibit direct attractive response to simple chemolfactory signals in the floral scents of the Caladium bicolor, Philodendron acutatum and Taccarum ulei. Pure authentic standards of 4-methyl-5-vinilthiazole and (S)-2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-hexanone, two rare and biosynthetically diverse compounds identified as prominent constituents in floral fragrance samples among the three species of aroids, were successfully used in fragrant baits to selectively lure pollinating cyclocephaline scarab beetles. Four species of Cyclocephala native to the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil, C. Celata, C. Distincta, C. Latericia and C. Paraguayensis, were successfully maintained in captivity with a simple, inexpensive rearing protocol. All species yielded viable eggs and three of them also yielded healthy imagoes on an exclusively saprophagous diet for the larvae. Near future perspectives for the controlled, large-scale reproduction of these specialized pollinators offer interesting opportunities for environmental management plans of interacting biological systems

Abstract:
Numa fase inicial a ferramenta identificará o estado actual e a quantificação do valor dessa família de produtos no processo produtivo. ABSTRACT: The value stream mapping has been used as a very effective tool in helping the identification and reduction of waste. It is a tool belonging to a management philosophy that seeks the elimination of waste - Lean Management - and it is often used as a starting point for the implementation of this philosophy. This project aims to implement the value stream mapping (VSM) tool to examine the value chain of a family of products from a company's production process - Toyota Caetano Portugal, SA.. The application of VSM will be developed from particular to the general, first the tool is applied to the sub-processes and then the global process. Initially, this tool will identify the current state and quantification of the value of the products family in the production process. Subsequently, its analysis leads to the identification of waste and opportunities for improvement for the future development of the state of the production process.

Abstract:
In this thesis I argue that First Amendment free speech and exercise claims do not grant religious business owners the ability to bypass statutes that prohibit discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity grounds in areas of public accommodations. My arguments focus on the constitutional claims made in the case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Furthermore, I determine that Congress can rely on both the Commerce Clause and the Fourteenth Amendment to pass legislation that prohibits discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity grounds in areas of public accommodations. I argue that despite the Court’s holding in the Civil Rights Cases, Congress can regulate discrimination by private actors, not just state sponsored discrimination, through the Fourteenth Amendment. I analyze the potential avenues religious business owners can use to undermine both state and federal antidiscrimination statutes and have their discriminatory practices legally sanctioned. I conclude by arguing that religious exemptions do not belong in antidiscrimination statutes.

Abstract:
The current study attempted to alter gambling bets made during a simulated game of craps using a multiple baseline design. Participants were open to wager between 0-3 chips per trial. All participants completed a four phase sequence throughout the session. The first phase was a training phase where participants wagered and rolled dice five times. At the start of the second phase, which was baseline, participants were told that they have 100 chips to wager with, they will earn half of the amount of chips they accumulate for extra credit in a college graduate class. A probability instruction using Microsoft PowerPoint was the third phase. Finally, during the fourth phases participants were given 100 chips and played the number of trials they had during the baseline phase. Decreasing average bets per phase illustrates the ability to alter gambling behavior through probability training.

Matta, John. "Improving the Analysis of Complex Networks Using Node-Based Resilience Measures." OpenSIUC, 2018. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines various facets of the analysis of complex networks. In the first part, we study the resilience of networks, by examining various attempts to quantify resilience. Some of the measures studied are vertex attack tolerance, integrity, tenacity, toughness and scattering number. We prove empirically that, although these measures are NP-hard to calculate, they can be approximated to within reasonable amounts by a novel heuristic called Greedy-BC that relies on the graph-theoretic measure betweenness centrality. After verifying the accuracy of Greedy-BC, we test it on several well-known classes of networks: Barabasi-Albert networks, HOTNets and PLODs. Experiments determine that random-degree PLOD nets have the highest resilience, perhaps because of their random nature. The second part concerns clustering. We use the resilience measures and the Greedy-BC heuristic from part 1 to partition graphs. Many experiments are conducted with a generalized algorithm, NBR-Clust, using all discussed resilience measures, and expanding the data to a wide variety of real-life and synthetically generated networks. A parametrized resilience measure beta-VAT is used to detect noise, or outliers, in noisy data. Results are extended to another facet of network analysis -- that of cluster overlap. Attack sets of NBR-Clust are found to contain overlaps with high probability, and an algorithm is developed to identify them. One remaining problem with NBR-Clust is time complexity. The usefulness of the method is limited by the slowness of Greedy-BC, and particularly by the slowness of computing betweenness centrality. In an extensive series of experiments, we test several methods for approximating and speeding betweenness centrality calculations, and are able to reduce the time to cluster a 10,000-node graph from approximately 2 days with the original method of calculation, to a few minutes. In another exploration of the algorithmic aspects of resilience, we attempt to generalize some of the results obtained to hypergraphs. It is found that resilience measures like VAT and algorithms like Greedy-BC transfer well to a hypergraph representation. The final part of the dissertation reviews applications of the new clustering method. First NBR-Clust is used to cluster data on autism spectrum disorders. Because classifications of these disorders are vague, and the data noisy, the clustering properties of NBR-Clust are useful. Results hopefully lead to a better understanding of how to classify autism spectrum disorders. Second, we use NBR-Clust to examine gene assay data with the hope of identifying genes that confer resistance to powdery mildew disease in certain species of grapevines.

Lokare, Shrinivas Sadashiv. "A mechanistic investigation of ash deposition in pulverized-coal and biomass combustion /." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2008. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation details the effects of fuel constituents on ash deposition through systematic experimental and theoretical analyses of fundamental particle experiments and a suite of fuels with widely varying inorganic contents and compositions. The experiments were carried out in the Multifuel Flow Reactor (MFR) at Brigham Young University. Fuels included several biomass fuels (straw, sawdust and mixtures of straw-sawdust with other additives such as Al(OH)3, CaCO3, etc.) and four commercially-used coals (Illinois#6, Powder River Basin – Caballo and Cordero, Blind Canyon, and Lignite – Beulah Zap). The data from the series of experiments quantitatively illustrate the effects of fuel properties, physical and/or chemical, on ash deposition rate mechanisms. In deposition investigation, the most significant deposition mechanisms in a general ash deposition model – inertial impaction, condensation and eddy impaction – were selected. In this PhD work, these three mechanisms are analyzed using simulation techniques such as Fluent and programming languages such as C++. The experimental data was collected for deposition rate measurements to provide a data set for the model validations except for eddy impaction. In this model analyses, the impaction efficiency model predictions from this work indicated lower impaction efficiencies than the traditional potential flow model presented by others (Israel 1983). The experimental data by others (Lokare 2003) and the data collected in this work support these predictions and present a new impaction efficiency correlation as a function of Stokes number. Similarly, the capture and condensation models perform well and are supported by the respective experimental data. The comprehensive ash deposition model predicts ash deposition rates within 10% of experimental data and is able to distinguish the role of various additives in recipe fuels combustion. As an additional results, NOX behavior of Illinois#6 and PRB (Caballo) in oxyfuel combustion show evidence of inherent NOX reducing feature of oxyfuel combustion.

Abstract:
San Luis Obispo, California was a violent place in the 1850s with numerous murders and lynchings in staggering proportions. This thesis studies the rise of violence in SLO, its causation, and effects. The vigilance committee of 1858 represents the culmination of the violence that came from sweeping changes in the region, stemming from its earliest conquest by the Spanish. The mounting violence built upon itself as extensive changes took place. These changes include the conquest of California, from the Spanish mission period, Mexican and Alvarado revolutions, Mexican-American War, and the Gold Rush. The history of the county is explored until 1863 to garner an understanding of the borderlands violence therein.

Enright, Morgan Elaine. "The facilitative effects of drawing and gesturing on word retrieval for people with aphasia." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1594.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to verbally communicate successfully, people need the ability to retrieve a desired word. However, the inability to do this, called “anomia,” is a common impairment for people with aphasia, and frequently persists into the chronic stage of recovery. Strategies that facilitate verbal expression may reduce or compensate for instances of anomia. Verbal strategies, such as Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) have been researched extensively and shown to be effective. Nonverbal strategies, such as drawing and gesture, have research on their effects as a substitution for verbalization, but less on their facilitative effects. However, the research suggests they may work in a similar manner to verbal approaches, by activating semantic networks. Thus, the facilitative effects of nonverbal strategies should be explored further. The aim of this experiment was to determine the facilitative effects of drawing and gesturing during a picture naming task in one participant with chronic aphasia. Results revealed that all conditions evaluated, drawing, gesture, and wait (control), produced improvements in the picture naming task. However, contrary to expectations, the facilitated conditions (i.e. drawing and gesture) did not create more effects than the unfacilitated condition (i.e. wait). This finding may indicate the benefits of a factor common to all conditions. Further results of this study and directions for future research are discussed.
