The aim of this article is to review the lexicography of Andrzej Calagius, to present a list of his dictionaries of synonyms and to correct the misinformation about his dictionaries. The article describes three German-Polish-Latin editions (1579, 1595, 1602), one German-Latin edition (1597), and two Latin editions (1592 and 1594). It also proves that these multilingual editions are not revised versions of the 1579 edition but independent dictionaries.

Abstract:
Ideę bliskiej z nią współpracy pozostałych państw słowiańskich głosił w tamtym czasie pochodzący z Dalmacji duchowny i dyplomata papieski, Aleksander Komulović. Autor postarał się zrekonstruować misję dyplomatyczną Komulovicia do Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w latach 1594-1597 wraz z oceną szans jej powodzenia w ówczesnych warunkach religijnych i geopolitycznych. The Idea of Slavic Unity in the Diplomacy of Alexander Komulović, the Papal Nuncio to Central and Eastern Europe in 1594-1597 The outbreak of another Austro-Turkish war in 1593, urged Pope Clement VIII to establish the Holy League which mainly consisted of the Central and Eastern European states, and the aim of which was to oppose another Muslim aggression against Christians. The Roman Curia decided to include Muscovy in the plan as well. The idea of close cooperation with all Slavic states was put forward at that time by Aleksander Komulović – a priest and papal diplomat from Dalmatia. The author’s aim was to reconstruct the Komulović’s diplomatic mission to Central and Eastern Europe in 1594-1597, and provide an assessment of the chances of its success in the light of religious and geopolitical underpinnings of the period.

Abstract:
This study is about Mt. Palgong Meetings among war leaders of Korea, the general process of battles in the mountain, and literary works of meeting participants during the Imjin War(Japanese Invasion to Korea, 1592~1598; 壬辰倭亂). It has been known that Mt. Palgong Meetings were held two times - in March 1596(the 29th year of the King Seonjo 宣祖) and September 1596. But, this study reveals that the meetings were held two more times - in September 1592(the 25th year of the King Seonjo) and September 1594(the 27th year of the King Seonjo). Among the meetings, only what was held in March 1596 was led by the central government, while the other three meetings were voluntarily led by volunteer army leaders. At the battle in September 1597(the 30th year of the King Seonjo), those leaders who had participated in Mt. Palgong Meetings led the volunteer soldiers in defeating the Japanese troops. At Mt. Palgong Meetings, voluntary army leaders would express their visions about the world and the country with many patriotic literary works. The works of such leaders written at the meeting of September 1596 can be divided into two types: responsory and presenting poems(和唱詩) and linking verses poems(聯詩). While Mt. Palgong Meetings and Mt. Palgong battles were important historical accidents which would allow us to grasp the organizations and activities of volunteer armies, there remains no such historical space in the Mt. Palgong region.

Abstract:
By the late sixteenth century, Irish demand for seminary places was sufficient to warrant the establishment of a dedicated Irish college in Lisbon (1590). This was followed by foundations in Salamanca (1592), Douai (1594) and elsewhere. The great majority were administered by the Society of Jesus, whose Irish members were generally Old English, a term denoting descendants of the twelfth-century Anglo-Norman settlers. Old English Jesuit domination of Irish colleges occasioned accusations of discrimination against students of Gaelic family backgrounds, with the students seeking redress from the secular authorities. The Irish college in Douai was not formally administered by the Jesuits, but its founder, Christopher Cusack, collaborated closely with the Society. Accusations against him of anti-Gaelic bias emerged in the 1600s, coincidental with the arrival of large numbers of Gaelic Irish refugees in Flanders at the end of the Nine Years War (1594–1603). Ethnic tensions and financial difficulties all but put paid to the college in the 1620s.

Baworowskiego we Lwowie. Wyizolowane z książki grzyby zidentyfikowano do gatunku. W badanej kolekcji stwierdzono występowanie Aspergillus Niger van Tieghem. Celem eksperymentu było syntetyzowanie nowych związków pochodnych chinoliny i wyznaczenie ich odpowiednich stężeń do zwalczania zagrożeń mikrobiologicznych występujących w Biblii J. Wujka. Do badań zastosowano pochodne chinoliny. Przygotowano preparat do dezynfekcji zbiorów. Związki pochodne chinoliny to skuteczne, bezpieczne związki w dezynfekcji zbiorów bibliotecznych.

Schleuse, Paul. "“A Tale Completed in the Mind”: Genre and Imitation in L'Amfiparnaso (1597)." Journal of Musicology 29, no. 2 (2012): 101–53. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/jm.2012.29.2.101.

Full text
Abstract:
Musical histories before the twentieth century consistently described Orazio Vecchi's L'Amfiparnaso (published in 1597) as an early or nascent form of opera, despite the composer's explanation that the work is an aural spectacle, not a visual one. Later scholars have persisted in viewing L'Amfiparnaso as a fundamentally theatrical work (in a notional genre called madrigal comedy), designed for quasi-dramatic performance before a listening audience. A close reading of this historiography, along with a partial reconstruction of the membership and movements of the Gelosi and Uniti theater companies in the 1590s, disproves the widely held assumption that L'Amfiparnaso was composed and performed in 1594, and suggests that its characters' names refer to specific actors who performed with the Uniti in Bologna in 1595 and 1596. This new account of the book's origin opens it up to interpretation as a recreational collection of musical imitations of theatre, rather than as an incomplete “script” for a novel kind of dramatic performance. Through its diverse musical styles and poetic registers (Vecchi penned both the poems and the music), as well as its unusual custom-made woodcut illustrations, L'Amfiparnaso presents scenes whose range defies cinquecento theatrical convention. Urban comic dialogues share the imagined stage with tragicomic monologues, idiosyncratic musical dialogues are found alongside serious madrigals, and the woodcuts depict both characteristic comic and pastoral stage settings. As a whole, then, L'Amfiparnaso represents—in Vecchi's words—“almost all the actions of the private man.” This emphasis on variety locates the book firmly within the poetic sphere of Vecchi's other large-scale collections, Selva di varia ricreatione (1590) and Convito musicale (1597), and adds special resonance to his claim that those seeking “a complete tale” in L'Amfiparnaso will find it only “in the mind.”

Abstract:
The fourth edition of Britannia (1594) contained a marked increase in the representation of the propertied classes. The names of landowners, new families as well as old, were increased by approximately three hundred over the third edition of 1590. The fourth edition also contained a new index — “Barones et lllustriores Familiae” — which, together with the new names, registered first Camden's awareness of the changing character of Elizabethan society and second his qualifications as heraldic historian. The significance of this is not entirely clear until it is seen that the changes in Britannia came at a time of controversy and declining esteem in the College of Arms. Camden's authority in heraldry, of which the 1594 Britannia provided convincing evidence, together with his association with the advocates of armorial reform (Fulke Greville, Sir Edward Hoby, and Baron Burghley as well as the queen) made him a logical choice, over Ralph Brooke, for elevation to Clarenceux King of Arms in October 1597. Brooke's quarrel with Camden was part and parcel of the College's troubles and was seen at the time as an instance of the jealous animosity for which Brooke was notorious. One of the ironies of Brooke's attack is that it was symptomatic of the conditions — rivalries and jurisdictional disputes among the heralds, for instance — that advocates of reform were attempting to remedy.

Abstract:
Abstract Paulus Pfinzing von Henfenfeld embodied the gentrification of geometry in late sixeenth-century Nuremberg. A patrician merchant, Pfinzing developed and invented surveying tools, and publicized their use. He is famed for his so-called Pfinzing Atlas of manuscript maps of the Nuremberg area that he completed in 1594. His legacy in print of two now rare books from 1598–1599 on surveying and on geometric solids is less well known, as Pfinzing published them both anonymously. The former entreated the well-educated to take up surveying, while the latter presented a summary of recent scholarship on geometric solids based on Albrecht Dürer and Wenzel Jamnitzer, among other luminaries. This article investigates the ways Pfinzing used his knowledge of surveying and familiarity with Nuremberg publishing to present geometry as a gentlemanly pursuit.

Abstract On November 7, 1594, an Assembly was held in the Monastery of St. Mary in Mat, and was attended by “Governors and General Guardians of the Macedonian and Albanian Kingdoms”. The Assembly was attended by leaders representing the Albanian provinces, such as: Gjergj Skura from Rodoni, Gjek Lalësi from Dukagjini, Vlash Koreshi from Kruja, Domenik Jonima from Mati, Jeronim Mamëli from Elbasan, and bishops of Stefaniakë and Sapas etc. A detailed project was drafted for the liberation of the country from the Ottoman invaders, addressed to the Western nations, to the Pope, the Kingdom of Naples etc. in order to seek material and military support. The action plan and the demands examined during the assembly meeting were entrusted to Tomë Plezha as the almighty delegate of the Pope to the king of Spain and other European princes. It was thought that he had authority over the peoples of these parts.

Abstract:
In 1595, shortly after founding, the Berezov fort was besieged by the Ostyaks (probably under the command of the Kunovat-Lyapin prince Shatrov Luguev) and the Samoeds. A quarter century later, three servicemen from Berezov evidenced in the Kazan Prikaz that the siege, during which the ‘foreigners’ burned the fort, lasted over six months. Contrary to the common opinion, the reliability of this evidence can be doubted because it does not completely agree with the news on Shatrov Luguev’s assault of Berezov in 1594-1595. Moreover, the garrison of the fortress on the Severnaya Sosva river was rather numerous (three hundred Cossacks and ‘Lithuanians’) and it is likely that they were able to make the assaulters retreat. The agitation among the local Ostyaks and Samoyeds subsided, probably, only a few months later, and Moscow considered it expedient to send a punitive detachment, commanded by Prince P.I. Gorchakov, to the Urals. In 1596, together with the Kodi Ostyaks and, apparently, the Berezovites, Gorchakov defeated the Obdor principality and founded the Obdor (Nosovoy) fort.

Abstract:
The main focus of this article is upon how Chosǒn pursued ‘the ground and maritime joint defense’ as the main part of its anti-Japanese strategy and as the principle of its military collaboration with the Ming by actively taking advantage of its geographical terrain bridging Ming and Japan via Yellow Sea/Southern Coast. From the first half of 1593 to the first half of 1594, when the Ming army stationed in Chosǒn, the Chosǒn court proposed a joint operation between the Ming ground forces and the Chosǒn maritime forces for a complete repulse of the Japanese invaders who camped in the Southern Coast and sought to enter into Chǒlla Province and Yellow Sea. And, from the second half of 1594 to the second half of 1596, when the Ming army withdrew from Chosǒn, the Chosǒn court devised plans of a combined operation between the Chosǒn navy and the Ming navy in order to carry out a sea blockage and destroy the Japanese armies within Chosǒn. What is more, this ground and maritime joint defense plan, emphasizing the strategic importance of Chosǒn in geographical terrains, also concerned such practical matters as how to enhance firepower, replenish military strength, and increase the number of battleships. At this juncture, we can rethink the way Chosǒn strove to strengthen its anti-Japanese counterattack and to overcome the unprecedented national crisis. This approach will enable us to explore complex and multilayered contexts in a wider analytic methodology that redefines the war as an international war in East Asia.

Abstract:
In A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1594-1595), Shakespeare introduces elements borrowed from court masques, mainly music and dance. After a brief exploration of critical arguments claiming that Shakespeare’s play is the model for musical versions produced during and after the Restoration, this essay investigates the negotiations and shifts of meaning in the homonymous Brazilian adaptation (2006), staged by Cia. Rústica and directed by Patrícia Fagundes. The intermedial processes, articulated in the transposition from page to stage, will be analyzed in the light of contemporary theoretical perspectives.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We analyse the importance of the generation of Jesuit pioneer missionaries at the service of the Portuguese Patronage for the implementation of quốc ngữ [ national language] in present-day Vietnam and the linguistic description of the tonology of Annamese or Tonkinese (former names of Vietnamese). We analyse, in particular, the manuscript Manuductio ad Linguam Tunckinensem (ca. 1745 [ ante 1623]) by Francisco de Pina, S. J. (1585/ 1586– 1625), and the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum and the grammatical treatise Linguae Annamiticae seu Tunchinensis Brevis Declaratio (Rome 1651) by Alexandre de Rhodes, S. J. (1593– 1660). We corroborate that Pina was indeed the first to use the Romanization system of Tonkinese, and we establish that he was also the first to describe its six tones in detail. Rhodes expanded Pina’s knowledge, which is particularly explicit in the description of Tonkinese tonology. We also explain that Rhodes used lost manuscript dictionaries written by Gaspar do Amaral, S. J. (1594– 1646) and António Barbosa, S. J. (1594– 1647), which is evident mainly in the use of the “ Portuguese” digraph < nh> to represent the phoneme /ɲ/.
