Ponadto przedstawia nieznane dotychczas okoliczności wyznaczenia gwiazdozbioru Tarczy ku czci Jana III i dedykowania mu książki

A Silesian astronomer, Maria Cunitia (1610?–1664) became known as the author of Urania propitia (1650), i.e. astronomical tables based on Johannes Kepler’s Rudolphine Tables (1627), which she adapted to facilitate their use. However, little has been said about Cunitia’s observations of the sky with the use of advanced astronomical instruments. In this paper, we intend to use all extant printed and manuscript sources to draw a picture of Cunitia as an active astronomer engaged in astronomical observations. Considering the fact that in the years 1648–1654 Cunitia and her husband, Elias von Löwen

Today we are accustomed to seeing the objects of the universe in magnificent digital pictures vividly before our eyes. But before the invention of photography, the art of painting and drawing played an important role in scientific research. Those who were powerful astronomers of this art had the advantage. A persistent feature in Jesuit reports about the late Ming and early Qing was the notion that an enduring peace and concord pervaded the Chinese political system. Although the Jesuits did not invent this association, which was rooted in Greco-Roman historiography, the Jesuit encyclopaedist Antonio Possevino (1533–1611) was the first to link the ‘perpetual peace’ (perpetua pax) and ‘supreme concord’ (summa concordia) of the Chinese state to the Confucian intellectual tradition. As the Jesuits’ missionary strategy developed under the tutelage of Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), ‘public peace’ (pax publ

This article analyzes the relationship between Ottoman sovereignty and animal actors as presented by members of the Ottoman imperial court (dergāh-ı ʿālī) reporting on Sultan Mehmed IV’s (r. 1648-1687) hunting expeditions. Upon a close reading of accounts penned by the storyteller and world traveler Evliya Çelebi (c. 1611-1683), the historian Abdurrahman Abdi Paşa (d. 1692), and the court chronicler Mustafa Naima Efendi (1655-1716), I argue that their descriptions of Mehmed IV’s participation in the imperial hunt reveal a shared conception of sovereign character based on engagement with animal

The aim of this article is to investigate the history of the Cyrillic manuscript transcription of Selenographia (1647), which details Moon observation – the work of Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth astronomer Johannes Hevelius (Jan Heweliusz, 1611–1687). The codex is relevant in two aspects: first, as an example of a late-17th century book, incorporating the characteristics of both a manuscript and a printed publication; and second – as an example of scientific literature in the Commonwealth.
