Resum: En aquest article realitzarem una anàlisi quantitativa, semàntica i comparativa dels conceptes ‘Espanya’ i ‘Catalunya’ en les seves formes terminològiques singulars i plurals pròpies dels idiomes català, castellà i llatí, contingudes en els dietaris institucionals del Consell de Cent de Barcelona i de la Diputació del General de Catalunya. La cronologia analitzada serà l’albada del segle XVIII, període convuls en què es produí la mort del monarca hispànic Carles II d’Àustria (1700), l’entronització dels Borbó (1701) i la consegüent guerra de successió per la Monarquia d’Espanya (1702-1715) que es batallà al Principat de Catalunya entre 1704 i 1714. Els resultats de l’estudi ofereixen noves perspectives sobre alguns aspectes del debat historiogràfic desfermat per la celebració del Tricentenari del 1714, i que gira al voltant de com era la identitat col·lectiva dels catalans a inicis del segle XVIII.Paraules clau: Història conceptual, Espanya, Catalunya, Barcelona, Guerra de Successió espanyola.Abstract: In this article we will carry out a quantitative, semantic and comparative analysis of the concepts ‘Spain’ and ‘Catalonia’ in its singular and plural forms of the Catalan, Spanish and Latin languages, contained in the institutional diaries of the Consell de Cent of Barcelona and the Deputation of the General of Catalonia. The chronology analysed will be the start of the 18th century, a period in which the death of the Spanish monarch Charles II of Austria (1700), the enthronement of the Bourbons (1701) and the consequent war of succession for the Monarchy of Spain (1702-1715) that was fought in the Principality of Catalonia between 1704 and 1714. The results of the study offer new perspectives on some aspects of the historiographical debate unleashed by the celebration of the Tricentenary of 1714, which revolves around the collective identity of Catalans at the beginning of the 18th century.Keywords: Conceptual history, Spain, Catalonia, Barcelona, War of Spanish Succession.

Abstract:
Introduction. The inventory of buildings and property are an accounting document. The largescale description of the lands and property of the spiritual patrimony of 1701–1705 carried out within the framework of the Church Reform of Peter I should be considered as a stage in the control of the state over the material welfare of the Church. Materials. Inventories of bishops houses and monasteries were found in the central and regional archives. A number of documents of the early 18th century were published. Analysis. Different census takers carried out descriptions of the patrimonies of the Vologda Bishops house in five regions of the country, which indicates applying the uyezd by uyezd principle of the description of the regions. The comparison of the texts shows that census books of the patrimonies of the Vologda Bishops house of 1701–1702 were primary in relation to the census of economy (statements) of the Vologda Bishops house in 1702–1703. An inventory of the Bishops Treasury was also made. Results. The comparison of three censuses (patrimony, economy, treasury) gave state documents on the basis of which it was possible to make a complete picture of the economy and property of the Vologda house of St. Sophia. In this regard, a complete secularization of Church possessions actually took place, however it was not fully formalized legally.

MILITARY ACTIONS ON THE BORDER BETWEEN THE DUCHY OF COURLAND AND LITHUANIA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GREAT NORTHERN WAR (SEPTEMBER 1701–MAY 1703) The article dwells on the events of the Great Northern War (1700–1721) related to the Duchy of Courland. It focuses on the warfare in a particular region, the border area between the Duchy of Courland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, from the entry of the Swedes into the Duchy of Courland in the summer of 1701 to the spring of 1703, when the Swedish governor, Karl Magnus Stuart, left Courland. The article is based mainly on the historical sources stored in the Latvian State Historical Archive. Abstract:
Amanuscript account by a Scots merchant, Robert Allen, of his life in New Spain from 1698 until 1707 has recently come to light. In 1708 Allen sent the three-page memorial to the British secretary of state for the south, Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland, outlining his experiences over the preceding decade with the view towards securing employment under the crown in the Americas. Allen began with the year 1698 when he left the Scottish colony at Darien to work for Jamaican merchants on trading voyages in the Spanish West Indies. In 1701 he returned to the coast of Darien in search of Nicaragua wood and, by chance, began six years of residence on the continent. Surviving one Indian massacre, he lived among friendly natives, joined the Jamaican expedition of 1702 which raided the Isthmus of Panama, escaped a second Indian and Spanish massacre, and was taken as a prisoner to Quito where in 1704 he secured appointment as secretary to the fiscal of the audiencia and surveyor general of the province of Quito. When this official was promoted to the Council of the Indies in 1707, Allen accompanied him on the journey to Spain. However, their ship was one of those attacked and sunk by Admiral Wager, who in turn persuaded Allen to return to England and approach the government.

Abstract:
In the newly revealed complete Dictionnaire des termes published in 1701 by Sébastien de Brossard there is a list of more than 60 “Auteurs qui ont écrit en François”, whose works he has personally “seen, read, and examined”. De Saint Lambert is named among them. This definitely proves that one of de Saint Lambert’s works had been published before 1701. This recently unveiled evidence and the diachronic examination of practically all possibly available historic and contemporary sources, showed that in some points the current view should be changed. In harpsichord teaching and performance, in thorough-bass accompaniment the treatises of de Saint Lambert, F. Couperin and J.-P. Rameau are the basic instruction editions. Only de Saint Lambert and his two treatises bring forth many bio-bibliographic questions, i.e. Les principes du clavecin (the dates of publication have been proved to be 1697 and 1702), Nouveau traité de l’accompagnement is Paris 1707; and the publication of the Traité de l’accompagnement (1680) is under question whether it was a “myth” or it indeed existed according to the historical evidence. В заключительном разделе введенного недавно в научный оборот полного издания музыкального словаря Себастьяна де Броссара 1701 года содержится список из 60 «авторов, которые писали на французском языке» и труды которых де Броссар лично «смотрел, читал и анализировал». В числе этих авторов упоминается де Сен Ламбер — музыкант эпохи барокко, теоретические труды которого, наряду с трактатами Ф. Куперена и Ж. Ф. Рамо, содержат важнейшие сведения о французском клавесинном искусстве эпохи. Отсюда следует, что один, либо оба клавесинных трактата де Сен Ламбера были опубликованы ранее 1701 года. Данное свидетельство, а также результаты исследования в диахронической последовательности прямых и косвенных указаний из исторических источников убеждают в том, что (1) хорошо известное издание знаменитого трактата де Сен Ламбера «Основы клавесина» 1702 года не является первым, первое же издание было выполнено в 1697 году; (2) тогда как трактат по аккомпанементу, известный по изданию 1707 года, впервые увидел свет в 1680 году, и последнее обстоятельство вовсе не является «мифом» музыкальных библиографов XIX века, как ранее было принято считать в науке.

Abstract:
The article analyses two conventions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania republicans, aristocracy and nobility that won the power in Lithuania at the end of 1700, which took place in Vilnius in 1701. First of the conventions in Vilnius took place 0n May 2–14, 1701. The second convention in Vilnius started meetings in same year, from July 23 through to August 12, 1701. The article discusses documents that were approved in these conventions, location of the gatherings and their significance in the sequence of republican conventions in 1698–1703. The analysis is focused on the influence of the conventions in establishing a new form of republican confederate governance in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, also assessing the international and military context of the conventions. The conventions of the republicans of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, having gathered for two meetings in Vilnius in 1701, were the most important political events in the life of Lithuanian state. In the course of these conventions the supreme Lithuanian state power of the time, the nature of which was quite special – close to confederate, decided on the most important issues, facing the new authority, established after the victory by the republicans against the Sapiehas, the aristocrats of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania who by the end of the seventeenth century had reached the status of hegemons. These conventions at the capital of Lithuania were extraordinary events that attracted key politicians of the time and some active nobility, which would not participate in great numbers but still were more actively than at other forums, such as inaugurations and sessions of the Lithuanian Tribunal. Republican conventions were initiated in 1698 and ended in 1703. Both 1701 conventions held their meetings in Vilnius alongside the Vilnius sessions of the Lithuanian Tribunal. First of the conventions took place at the eve of the Sejm of the Republic, and the second one soon after the Sejm, thus problems discussed in the conventions were closely related to the agenda of the Sejm of the Polish and Lithuanian state. Es conocido cómo las Cortes de 1701-‍1702 y 1705-‍1706 pusieron de manifiesto la existencia de un constitucionalismo muy vivo en el Principado, con fuerte dinamismo político, económico y social. Esto se explica en parte por la capacidad que tenían las instituciones catalanas de representar y dar voz a grupos sociales amplios. Consell de Cent, Diputación, Brazo Militar, Conferencia de los Tres Comunes, comisiones y juntas menores se convirtieron desde el último tercio del siglo XVII y la primera década del siglo XVIII en auténticos «oráculos de la nación» en palabras del marqués de Gironella. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar, a partir de la documentación oficial y los últimos estudios, cómo evolucionaron las instituciones catalanas durante esos años para permitir que tanto los intereses de la nobleza, como de la burguesía y sectores artesanos se hicieran presentes e influyeran en los grandes debates políticos del momento. Un universo social y político poco común en la Europa de esos años que se perdió en 1714.

Johann Jacob QuandT’S ACADEMIC ACCOUNT: THE LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE SEMINAR AT THE KÖNIGSBERG UNIVERSITY IN 1724 S u m m a r y The article introduces a document found in the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Germ. Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz; GStA PK: I. HAGR, Rep. 7 Preußen, Nr. 187 [1716–1729]) in Berlin that sheds new light on the seminar of the Lithuanian language – the first centre for teaching Lithuanian – that was founded at the Faculty of Theology of the Königsberg University in late 1720s. It is an academic account by Johann Jacob Quandt (1686–1772), the chief preacher of the court and the then dean of the Faculty of Theology of the Königsberg University and the fourth professor of theology in ordinary, who ran the seminar of the Lithuanian language between 1723 and 1727. This account provides insights into the early activities of the seminar that have not been documented in much detail so far. Neither the account nor any of its three appendices – lists of students attending Quandt’s courses – are dated. Based on other documents in the same archive file and the Christian holidays to which the account refers, Quandt’s account has been dated between 28 December 1724 and 11 January 1725, and the data that it contains cover the first half of the 1724–1725 winter semester: October–December of 1724. Quandt’s account shows that during the winter semester of 1724–1725, the seminar of theLithuanian language at the Königsberg University was attended by thirty theological students. Theology and language was taught twice daily between 10 and 11 AM and between 3 and 4 PM . The seminar under Quandt’s management continued to apply the so-called collegium privatissimum, the teaching method of its first supervisor, Heinrich Lysius (1670–1731). The names of the seminar attendees from that period are documented in the second appendix to Quandt’s account titled ‘Beyl. B. Seven of them attended the seminar back in the winter semester of 1723–1724 and were among the first attendees of the seminar of the Lithuanian language under Quandt after it had been reinstated in 1723. Peter Gottlieb Mielcke was the first teacher at the reinstated seminar. During the winter semester of 1724–1725, the age of the theological students attending the seminar of the Lithuanian language at the Königsberg University was between 17 and 30. Most of them were from Prussian Lithuania. After finishing their studies, at least 19 of the attendees were ordained priests and served in Lithuanian parishes. Out of the thirty students who signed the second appendix to Quandt’s account, at least one-half have not been known as attendees of the seminar of the Lithuanian language yet. Even though the Pietist Georg Friedrich Rogall was very critical towards the seminar of the Lithuanian language under the orthodox Lutheran Quandt in his 1725 letter to August Hermann Francke (1663–1727), professor of theology at the Halle University, it is beyond any dispute that the seminar had brought up a new generation of authors of Lithuanian writings. Six of the theological students who attended the seminar in the winter semester of 1724–1725 had become involved in Lithuanistic activity, albeit from the camps of two protestant movements – the orthodox Lutherans and the Pietists. Three of them – Peter Gottlieb Mielcke, Adam Heinrich Pilgrim, and Adam Friedrich Schimmelpfennig – were actively involved in Johann Jacob Quandt’s project that aimed to renew and enhance the repertoire of religious Lithuanian literature. Three others – Johann Richter, Friedrich Wilhelm Haack (by the way, he became involved in Lithuanistic activity with his proof-reading of the 1727 New Testament published by Quandt in Lithuanian), and Martin Schimmelpfennig – later went to Halle, the centre of Pietism, where they became teachers at the seminar of the Lithuanian language that was founded there in 1727 and drafted Lithuanian books. Quandt’s pupils made a significant contribution to the breakthrough in Lithuanian writings between the 1730s and 1760s.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates the ideological and historical sense of an architecture based on change. Louis XIVs Palace of Versailles provides the thematic framework and serves as the object of investigation. The time frame is centred on the summer of 1701 , which is when the King's Bedchamber is last moved. The Chateau is placed on an east-west axis, giving order to the castle as well as the city and the gardens. The East-West axis is also the solar axis, marking the order of the days. The centrality of the chamber symbolizes the process of centralization characteristic of the advent of the modern state, which Versailles marks the beginning of. The king begins refurbishment on his father's (Louis XIII) castle in 1661 . This means that for 40 years the suceessive king's bedchambers (six in total), have been moved around in search of the proper location. In a way, the new centrality and the interpretations of order and rationality that arise from it form a kind of palimpsest over the original sense of a Versailles as pure transformation. Based on the study of the ancient descriptions of the castle and floor plans of the period, the thesis seeks to make sense of the true ideological and cultural context of a palace initiated in full baroque period France, with a still itinerant king and court (Louvre, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Fontainebleau, Vincennes, etc.) and which culminates in the emplacement of the king's bedchamber as the centre of the world and symbol of a new rational and centralised state. Much has been said about the order of Versailles , but very little has been said about the disorder. In order to do so one must determine the twists of chance surrounding the displacements of the king's bedchamber, study the official discourse lhrough the descriptions of Versailles by the Ancien Régime and from the administrative documents of the period (the États de la France) which enable us to understand how the royal household worked and was organised. We shall focus above all on Jean-François Félibien's description from 1703: Description sommaire de Versailles, ancien et nouvelle. Apart from being the first book to describe the new king's bedchamber, Jean-Françoisis Félibien composes a strange text consisting of new text blended together with fragments from the description which his father. Thus, that which is intended as a guide becomes a time labyrinth with the reader/visitor wandering through an impossible palace, arising from the blending of two very different Versailles . The thesis is organised in three parts . We begin with the Duke of La Rochefoucauld. As the neighbour below the king's bedchamber he is one of the people most affected by the construction of the final bedchamber. Through his rise within the court, we analyse the meaning of the court and the way it works in relation to the distinct forms that the palace takes on. The second and most descriptive part shows the context of change. The Félibien books, the meaning of the solar axis, the elements used in construction, and also the problem of lodging in Versailles (15,000 people). We discover two great movements: the axis of penetration and transparency and an enormous avenue over half a kilometre long at the first level, veritable public place open to all. The third section proposes a reading of the disorde through an analysis of the official texts describing Versailles in three registers (castle (the place); the États de la France (the users); the feasts (the activities). The discursive disorders the three registers have in common are arranged in parallel to the spatial order of the Versailles of representation (excess, abundance, and chaos). The thesis opens up a long reflection on the disposition of the enfilade; understood here as antiperspective and the definitive crisis of the space of humanism.

Abstract:
Research exploring the physical health needs of people with intellectual disabilities is increasing. Unfortunately, first hand accounts from young people with intellectual disabilities remain largely absent. This is despite the fact that many of these individuals, albeit to a lesser extent than their non-disabled peers, are engaging in behaviours that can have a potentially negative impact on their health status (poor dietary habits, excessive alcohol consumption, and risky sexual behaviour). While knowledge alone does not always result in the adoption of healthier behavioural choices, it is an important prerequisite if young people are too keep themselves safe. In addition, understanding what young people know about health is pivotal to the formulation and development of appropriate education programmes and services. The limited research that does exist suggests that young people with intellectual disabilities have low levels of health knowledge, particularly in relation to sexual health and sexuality. Whereas public health messages are widely available concerning topics such as healthy eating and alcohol, information regarding sexual health is less accessible, owing to it being a private area of people’s lives. Much of our social/sexual development is largely experiential and gained through informal routes, such as interacting with peers. Yet the social networks of young people with intellectual disabilities may be compromised, which could partly account for the low levels of sexual knowledge reported. In support of this, sexual knowledge is also limited in young people with physical disabilities, another socially excluded group. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to further our understanding of how key features of social exclusion - impoverished social networks and access to sources of health information and experience - may impact upon young people with disabilities’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in relation to healthy eating, alcohol, pregnancy/contraception and HIV/AIDS. A substantial part of the research process was concerned with the development and piloting of appropriate methods with which to address these aims. Through structured and semi-structured questionnaires and vignette-based methodology, data from over 100 young people, aged 16-25, has been analysed and interpreted. Three groups of young people took part in the study, those with i) Intellectual disabilities (ID), ii) Physical disabilities (PD), and iii) typically developing, non-disabled (ND). With regards to health knowledge, the ID group had the poorest scores on the healthy eating and alcohol scales. However, the largest differences between the groups were related to health issues considered to be more personal and private, such as pregnancy and contraception, with both groups of young people with disabilities having lower levels of sexual health knowledge than their non-disabled peers. Thus, deficits in sexual knowledge did not just appear to be the result of the ID group’s cognitive deficits. Moreover, content analyses of open-ended questions on the questionnaire showed that all three groups held a surprising number of misconceptions about sexuality. It was also notable that young people with ID reported discussing sexual issues with friends and family less frequently than their non-disabled peers and reported being more reliant upon formal sources of sex education, such as that received through school or college. In addition, when participants with intellectual and physical disabilities were asked about how others would react to them drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and being open to a possible sexual encounter, using vignettes, they anticipated more negative attitudes from their friends for engaging in these potentially risky behaviours then their non-disabled peers. Although the majority of young people with disabilities also reported that their parents would disapprove of their actions, in contrast to their non-disabled peers, most of the young people with disabilities said that their parents’ views would matter to them. This research has highlighted the importance of people’s unique learning and socialisation experiences in shaping not only their health knowledge, but also their attitudes and beliefs. A number of implications for health education and for professionals working with both individuals with disabilities and their families are outlined. New avenues for research are also suggested.

The aim of this thesis is to examine whether or not television can play a role in the construction of a European identity and, if it does, what kind of European identity it articulates and which are the methods that it uses for constructing such an identity. In order to test the above, the thesis focuses on Greece a country where no previous research has been undertaken. The study examines mainly the current role of television in the construction of a European identity, although it attempts to assess this role over time, and particularly since the launch of private television. The study concentrates on news and television programmes. With reference to the news, discussion is centred on the frequency, tone, the most prominent themes and sub-categories of EU coverage while attention is also paid to the symbolic content of news about Europe. In addition, the thesis offers an analysis of the coverage of a specific event that has been perceived to be a defining moment for the country-Greece's entry to the Euro-zone. These findings compared with results derived from the press' coverage of the Greek entry to the Euro-zone. In order to get a broad overview of the coverage of Europe by the Greek television the study also focuses on television programmes and schedules. It examines the programming practices and strategies adopted by the television channels regarding Europe, while it provides an analysis of audience ratings and shares. Finally, the thesis assesses the findings through interviews with key figures in broadcast media. The analysis of the broadcast media aims to shed light on the role of Greek mass media in the promotion of European consciousness and their contribution to the development of a European identity. More specifically, the results of this analysis are important since they give insights into the role of television as a mechanism of identity construction. Finally, the thesis studies new grounds and is expected to enhance previous research and knowledge regarding the study of European identity. The benefits of this thesis and its contribution are at both the theoretical and empirical level and thus will contribute to the formation and implementation of media policy in the country studied.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is today precluded to patients bearing active implantable medical devices AIMDs). The great advantages related to this diagnostic modality, together with the increasing number of people benefiting from implantable devices, in particular pacemakers(PM)and carioverter/defibrillators (ICD), is prompting the scientific community the study the possibility to extend MRI also to implanted patients. The MRI induced specific absorption rate (SAR) and the consequent heating of biological tissues is one of the major concerns that makes patients bearing metallic structures contraindicated for MRI scans. To date, both in-vivo and in-vitro studies have demonstrated the potentially dangerous temperature increase caused by the radiofrequency (RF) field generated during MRI procedures in the tissues surrounding thin metallic implants. On the other side, the technical evolution of MRI scanners and of AIMDs together with published data on the lack of adverse events have reopened the interest in this field and suggest that, under given conditions, MRI can be safely performed also in implanted patients. With a better understanding of the hazards of performing MRI scans on implanted patients as well as the development of MRI safe devices, we may soon enter an era where the ability of this imaging modality may be more widely used to assist in the appropriate diagnosis of patients with devices. In this study both experimental measures and numerical analysis were performed. Aim of the study is to systematically investigate the effects of the MRI RF filed on implantable devices and to identify the elements that play a major role in the induced heating. Furthermore, we aimed at developing a realistic numerical model able to simulate the interactions between an RF coil for MRI and biological tissues implanted with a PM, and to predict the induced SAR as a function of the particular path of the PM lead. The methods developed and validated during the PhD program led to the design of an experimental framework for the accurate measure of PM lead heating induced by MRI systems. In addition, numerical models based on Finite-Differences Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were validated to obtain a general tool for investigating the large number of parameters and factors involved in this complex phenomenon. The results obtained demonstrated that the MRI induced heating on metallic implants is a real risk that represents a contraindication in extending MRI scans also to patient bearing a PM, an ICD, or other thin metallic objects. On the other side, both experimental data and numerical results show that, under particular conditions, MRI procedures might be consider reasonably safe also for an implanted patient. The complexity and the large number of variables involved, make difficult to define a unique set of such conditions: when the benefits of a MRI investigation cannot be obtained using other imaging techniques, the possibility to perform the scan should not be immediately excluded, but some considerations are always needed.

ƒe article recounts a little-known episode in the biography of the Chudov deacon Job, a disciple of the Leichoudis brothers, who was exiled to Solovki in 1701. Having witnessed Peter the Great's visit to the Solovetsky monastery in 1702, he compiled a text about this and the previous visit of the Tsar to Solovki (in 1694 and 1702), placed in the Peter's Chapel. A„erwards this story was included in the Solovetsky Chronicle of the 1st Extended redaction. Another product of Job's literary work was the book e Salvation Garden (1703) which is a collection of lives, services and panegyrics for the founders of the Solovetsky monastery. In the preface to this work Job included an eulogy to the synaxis of the Solovetsky saints composed by him and a brief chronological account of the biographies of the 12 most venerated ascetics. His work subsequently became the primary source for all XIX century writings on Solovetsky hagiology.
