Faura, Coll Ramon. "Arquitectura palimpsest (Versalles l'any 1701)." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/123721.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the ideological and historical sense of an architecture based on change. Louis XIVs Palace of Versailles provides the thematic framework and serves as the object of investigation. The time frame is centred on the summer of 1701 , which is when the King's Bedchamber is last moved. The Chateau is placed on an east-west axis, giving order to the castle as well as the city and the gardens. The East-West axis is also the solar axis, marking the order of the days. The centrality of the chamber symbolizes the process of centralization characteristic of the advent of the modern state, which Versailles marks the beginning of. The king begins refurbishment on his father's (Louis XIII) castle in 1661 . This means that for 40 years the suceessive king's bedchambers (six in total), have been moved around in search of the proper location. In a way, the new centrality and the interpretations of order and rationality that arise from it form a kind of palimpsest over the original sense of a Versailles as pure transformation. Based on the study of the ancient descriptions of the castle and floor plans of the period, the thesis seeks to make sense of the true ideological and cultural context of a palace initiated in full baroque period France, with a still itinerant king and court (Louvre, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Fontainebleau, Vincennes, etc.) and which culminates in the emplacement of the king's bedchamber as the centre of the world and symbol of a new rational and centralised state. Much has been said about the order of Versailles , but very little has been said about the disorder. In order to do so one must determine the twists of chance surrounding the displacements of the king's bedchamber, study the official discourse lhrough the descriptions of Versailles by the Ancien Régime and from the administrative documents of the period (the États de la France) which enable us to understand how the royal household worked and was organised. We shall focus above all on Jean-François Félibien's description from 1703: Description sommaire de Versailles, ancien et nouvelle. Apart from being the first book to describe the new king's bedchamber, Jean-Françoisis Félibien composes a strange text consisting of new text blended together with fragments from the description which his father. Thus, that which is intended as a guide becomes a time labyrinth with the reader/visitor wandering through an impossible palace, arising from the blending of two very different Versailles . The thesis is organised in three parts . We begin with the Duke of La Rochefoucauld. As the neighbour below the king's bedchamber he is one of the people most affected by the construction of the final bedchamber. Through his rise within the court, we analyse the meaning of the court and the way it works in relation to the distinct forms that the palace takes on. The second and most descriptive part shows the context of change. The Félibien books, the meaning of the solar axis, the elements used in construction, and also the problem of lodging in Versailles (15,000 people). We discover two great movements: the axis of penetration and transparency and an enormous avenue over half a kilometre long at the first level, veritable public place open to all. The third section proposes a reading of the disorde through an analysis of the official texts describing Versailles in three registers (castle (the place); the États de la France (the users); the feasts (the activities). The discursive disorders the three registers have in common are arranged in parallel to the spatial order of the Versailles of representation (excess, abundance, and chaos). The thesis opens up a long reflection on the disposition of the enfilade; understood here as antiperspective and the definitive crisis of the space of humanism.

Pownall, Jaycee Dawn. "Health knowledge and expected outcomes of risky behaviour : a comparative study of non-disabled adolescents and young people with intellectual and physical disabilities." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1701/.

Full text
Abstract:
Research exploring the physical health needs of people with intellectual disabilities is increasing. Unfortunately, first hand accounts from young people with intellectual disabilities remain largely absent. This is despite the fact that many of these individuals, albeit to a lesser extent than their non-disabled peers, are engaging in behaviours that can have a potentially negative impact on their health status (poor dietary habits, excessive alcohol consumption, and risky sexual behaviour). While knowledge alone does not always result in the adoption of healthier behavioural choices, it is an important prerequisite if young people are too keep themselves safe. In addition, understanding what young people know about health is pivotal to the formulation and development of appropriate education programmes and services. The limited research that does exist suggests that young people with intellectual disabilities have low levels of health knowledge, particularly in relation to sexual health and sexuality. Whereas public health messages are widely available concerning topics such as healthy eating and alcohol, information regarding sexual health is less accessible, owing to it being a private area of people’s lives. Much of our social/sexual development is largely experiential and gained through informal routes, such as interacting with peers. Yet the social networks of young people with intellectual disabilities may be compromised, which could partly account for the low levels of sexual knowledge reported. In support of this, sexual knowledge is also limited in young people with physical disabilities, another socially excluded group. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to further our understanding of how key features of social exclusion - impoverished social networks and access to sources of health information and experience - may impact upon young people with disabilities’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in relation to healthy eating, alcohol, pregnancy/contraception and HIV/AIDS. A substantial part of the research process was concerned with the development and piloting of appropriate methods with which to address these aims. Through structured and semi-structured questionnaires and vignette-based methodology, data from over 100 young people, aged 16-25, has been analysed and interpreted. Three groups of young people took part in the study, those with i) Intellectual disabilities (ID), ii) Physical disabilities (PD), and iii) typically developing, non-disabled (ND). With regards to health knowledge, the ID group had the poorest scores on the healthy eating and alcohol scales. However, the largest differences between the groups were related to health issues considered to be more personal and private, such as pregnancy and contraception, with both groups of young people with disabilities having lower levels of sexual health knowledge than their non-disabled peers. Thus, deficits in sexual knowledge did not just appear to be the result of the ID group’s cognitive deficits. Moreover, content analyses of open-ended questions on the questionnaire showed that all three groups held a surprising number of misconceptions about sexuality. It was also notable that young people with ID reported discussing sexual issues with friends and family less frequently than their non-disabled peers and reported being more reliant upon formal sources of sex education, such as that received through school or college. In addition, when participants with intellectual and physical disabilities were asked about how others would react to them drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and being open to a possible sexual encounter, using vignettes, they anticipated more negative attitudes from their friends for engaging in these potentially risky behaviours then their non-disabled peers. Although the majority of young people with disabilities also reported that their parents would disapprove of their actions, in contrast to their non-disabled peers, most of the young people with disabilities said that their parents’ views would matter to them. This research has highlighted the importance of people’s unique learning and socialisation experiences in shaping not only their health knowledge, but also their attitudes and beliefs. A number of implications for health education and for professionals working with both individuals with disabilities and their families are outlined. New avenues for research are also suggested.

Kontochristou, Maria. "The role of Greek television in constructing a European identity." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2002. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1701/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine whether or not television can play a role in the construction of a European identity and, if it does, what kind of European identity it articulates and which are the methods that it uses for constructing such an identity. In order to test the above, the thesis focuses on Greece a country where no previous research has been undertaken. The study examines mainly the current role of television in the construction of a European identity, although it attempts to assess this role over time, and particularly since the launch of private television. The study concentrates on news and television programmes. With reference to the news, discussion is centred on the frequency, tone, the most prominent themes and sub-categories of EU coverage while attention is also paid to the symbolic content of news about Europe. In addition, the thesis offers an analysis of the coverage of a specific event that has been perceived to be a defining moment for the country-Greece's entry to the Euro-zone. These findings compared with results derived from the press' coverage of the Greek entry to the Euro-zone. In order to get a broad overview of the coverage of Europe by the Greek television the study also focuses on television programmes and schedules. It examines the programming practices and strategies adopted by the television channels regarding Europe, while it provides an analysis of audience ratings and shares. Finally, the thesis assesses the findings through interviews with key figures in broadcast media. The analysis of the broadcast media aims to shed light on the role of Greek mass media in the promotion of European consciousness and their contribution to the development of a European identity. More specifically, the results of this analysis are important since they give insights into the role of television as a mechanism of identity construction. Finally, the thesis studies new grounds and is expected to enhance previous research and knowledge regarding the study of European identity. The benefits of this thesis and its contribution are at both the theoretical and empirical level and thus will contribute to the formation and implementation of media policy in the country studied.

Mattei, Eugenio <1981&gt. "Study of the thermal effects induced by magnetic resonance on endocardial leads: numerical models and experimental validation." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2009. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/1701/.

Full text
Abstract:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is today precluded to patients bearing active implantable medical devices AIMDs). The great advantages related to this diagnostic modality, together with the increasing number of people benefiting from implantable devices, in particular pacemakers(PM)and carioverter/defibrillators (ICD), is prompting the scientific community the study the possibility to extend MRI also to implanted patients. The MRI induced specific absorption rate (SAR) and the consequent heating of biological tissues is one of the major concerns that makes patients bearing metallic structures contraindicated for MRI scans. To date, both in-vivo and in-vitro studies have demonstrated the potentially dangerous temperature increase caused by the radiofrequency (RF) field generated during MRI procedures in the tissues surrounding thin metallic implants. On the other side, the technical evolution of MRI scanners and of AIMDs together with published data on the lack of adverse events have reopened the interest in this field and suggest that, under given conditions, MRI can be safely performed also in implanted patients. With a better understanding of the hazards of performing MRI scans on implanted patients as well as the development of MRI safe devices, we may soon enter an era where the ability of this imaging modality may be more widely used to assist in the appropriate diagnosis of patients with devices. In this study both experimental measures and numerical analysis were performed. Aim of the study is to systematically investigate the effects of the MRI RF filed on implantable devices and to identify the elements that play a major role in the induced heating. Furthermore, we aimed at developing a realistic numerical model able to simulate the interactions between an RF coil for MRI and biological tissues implanted with a PM, and to predict the induced SAR as a function of the particular path of the PM lead. The methods developed and validated during the PhD program led to the design of an experimental framework for the accurate measure of PM lead heating induced by MRI systems. In addition, numerical models based on Finite-Differences Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were validated to obtain a general tool for investigating the large number of parameters and factors involved in this complex phenomenon. The results obtained demonstrated that the MRI induced heating on metallic implants is a real risk that represents a contraindication in extending MRI scans also to patient bearing a PM, an ICD, or other thin metallic objects. On the other side, both experimental data and numerical results show that, under particular conditions, MRI procedures might be consider reasonably safe also for an implanted patient. The complexity and the large number of variables involved, make difficult to define a unique set of such conditions: when the benefits of a MRI investigation cannot be obtained using other imaging techniques, the possibility to perform the scan should not be immediately excluded, but some considerations are always needed.

Abstract:

Saha, Dibakar. "Improved Criteria for Estimating Calibration Factors for Highway Safety Manual (HSM) Applications." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) estimates roadway safety performance based on predictive models that were calibrated using national data. Calibration factors are then used to adjust these predictive models to local conditions for local applications. The HSM recommends that local calibration factors be estimated using 30 to 50 randomly selected sites that experienced at least a total of 100 crashes per year. It also recommends that the factors be updated every two to three years, preferably on an annual basis. However, these recommendations are primarily based on expert opinions rather than data-driven research findings. Furthermore, most agencies do not have data for many of the input variables recommended in the HSM. This dissertation is aimed at determining the best way to meet three major data needs affecting the estimation of calibration factors: (1) the required minimum sample sizes for different roadway facilities, (2) the required frequency for calibration factor updates, and (3) the influential variables affecting calibration factors. In this dissertation, statewide segment and intersection data were first collected for most of the HSM recommended calibration variables using a Google Maps application. In addition, eight years (2005-2012) of traffic and crash data were retrieved from existing databases from the Florida Department of Transportation. With these data, the effect of sample size criterion on calibration factor estimates was first studied using a sensitivity analysis. The results showed that the minimum sample sizes not only vary across different roadway facilities, but they are also significantly higher than those recommended in the HSM. In addition, results from paired sample t-tests showed that calibration factors in Florida need to be updated annually. To identify influential variables affecting the calibration factors for roadway segments, the variables were prioritized by combining the results from three different methods: negative binomial regression, random forests, and boosted regression trees. Only a few variables were found to explain most of the variation in the crash data. Traffic volume was consistently found to be the most influential. In addition, roadside object density, major and minor commercial driveway densities, and minor residential driveway density were also identified as influential variables.

Whittle, Joanne K. "'Your place and mine' : heritage management and a sense of place." Lincoln University, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10182/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents an analysis of human encounter with place. It examines the personal and cultural importance of an attachment to place, focusing on the reciprocal relationship between cultural heritage and a sense of place. Place is constructed out of mutual meanings between people and their environment. The study begins with an indepth look at the theory of place. In a series of heritage management case studies, the theory is applied in order to illustrate how meanings of place may be expressed. Place as a normative concept provides a role for resource managers in finding the meanings people associate with places, and in nurturing and enhancing these meanings. This involves the recognition of different values and 'stories' that are associated with place. Recognising these differences helps shift resource management away from the simplicity of grand narratives and totalizing discourses, towards a respect for intangible and multiple meanings in place. To a certain extent an understanding of place is already informing both natural and cultural management decisions in New Zealand, although this may not be explicitly recognised. To approach cultural heritage management from the perspective of place, however, challenges the current directions that heritage management is taking in this country. The study proposes a way of taking up that challenge, and concludes that the importance of place should not be overlooked.

Booth, Cormac G. "Variation in habitat preference and distribution of harbour porpoises west of Scotland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
The waters off the west coast of Scotland have one of the highest densities of harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) in Europe. Harbour porpoise are listed under Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive, requiring the designation of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for the species’ protection and conservation. The main aim of this thesis is to identify habitat preferences for harbour porpoise, and key regions that embody these preferences, which could therefore be suitable as SACs; and to determine how harbour porpoise use these regions over time and space. Designed visual and acoustic line-transect surveys were conducted between 2003 and 2008. Generalised Estimating Equations (GEEs) were used to determine relationships between the relative density of harbour porpoise and temporally and spatially variable oceanographic covariates. Predictive models showed that depth, slope, distance to land and spring tidal range were all important in explaining porpoise distribution. There were also significant temporal variations in habitat use. However, whilst some variation was observed among years and months, consistent preferences for water depths between 50 and 150 m and highly sloped regions were observed across the temporal models. Predicted surfaces revealed a consistent inshore distribution for the species throughout the west coast of Scotland. Regional models revealed similar habitat preferences to the full-extent models, and indicated that the Small Isles and Sound of Jura were the most consistently important regions for harbour porpoise, and that these regions could be suitable as SACs. The impacts of seal scarers on distribution and habitat use were also investigated, and there were indications that these devices have the potential to displace harbour porpoise. These results should be considered in the assessment of sites for SAC designation, and in implementing appropriate conservation measures for harbour porpoise.

Sokolovic-Perovic, Mirjana. "The voicing contrast in Serbian stops." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates aspects of the phonetic realisation of the voicing contrast in Serbian stops. It determines the basic set of acoustic correlates of the voicing contrast, and examines the effect of several linguistic and speaker factors on these correlates. The thesis explores fine details of the phonetic realisation of the voicing contrast that are specific to Serbian, and evaluates the existing theoretical models of the voicing contrast in relation to Serbian data. Twelve native Serbian speakers produced stops in a range of positions in isolated words and in a sentence frame. Acoustic analysis revealed that the voicing contrast is robust in Serbian in all word positions and for each speaker. Utterance-initially Serbian contrasts prevoiced stops and stops with short to intermediate positive VOT values. In word-initial intervocalic position the relevant correlates are duration of voicing in the closure and closure duration; in word-medial and final position the correlates are duration of voicing in the closure, closure duration, and preceding vowel duration. The following factors affect the realisation of the voicing contrast: the place of stop articulation, the vowel environment, gender, age, and place of birth of speakers. This variability is only partly attributable to universal constraints, and is mostly specific to Serbian. The results suggest that the existing models cannot account for the type of realisation of the voicing contrast found in Serbian, in particular for the status of intermediate VOTs and the role of closure duration and preceding vowel duration. Some of the main assumptions of these models should be re-assessed in order to include these findings. Further, these models are unable to account for non-universal and non-contrastive variability found in Serbian and other languages. Advantages and difficulties associated with the integration of the existing models with elements of an exemplar-based model of phonological knowledge are discussed.

Strassfeld, Brenda Carol. "An investigation about high school mathematics teachers' beliefs about teaching geometry." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
There continues to exist a dilemma about how, why and when geometry should be taught. The aim of this study was to examine high school mathematics teachers' beliefs about geometry and its teaching with respect to its role in the curriculum, the uses of manipulatives and dynamic geometry software in the classroom, and the role of proofs. In this study belief is taken as subjective knowledge (Furinghetti and Pehkonen, 2002). Data were collected from 520 teachers using questionnaires that included both statements that required responses on a Likert scale and open-ended questions. Also an intervention case study was conducted with one teacher. A three factor solution emerged from the analysis that revealed a disposition towards activities, a disposition towards an appreciation of geometry and its applications and a disposition towards abstraction. These results enabled classification of teachers into one of eight groups depending on whether their scores were positive or negative on the three factors. Knowing the teacher typology allows for appropriate professional development activities to be undertaken. This was done in the case study where techniques for scaffolding proofs were used as an intervention for a teacher who had a positive disposition towards activities and appreciation of geometry and its applications but a negative disposition towards abstraction. The intervention enabled the teacher successfully to teach her students how to understand and construct proofs. The open-ended responses on the questionnaire were analysed to obtain a better understanding of the teachers' beliefs. Four themes, the formal, intuitive, utilitarian and the mathematical, emerged from the analysis, which support the modal arguments given by Gonzalez and Herbst (2006). The findings reveal a disconnect between some high school teachers' beliefs about why geometry is important to study and the current position of the Standards Movement; and between whether geometry should be taught as part of an integrated curriculum or as a one-year course.

Turner, Paula Vanessa. "Selected economic and demographic associates of fear of crime: a log linear approach." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1986. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This research attempts to show the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, through various social statuses on the fear of crime. The purpose of the study was to measure the frequency of the fear of crime during the day, and the fear of crime during the night. The data used in the study is based on a city wide surveys conducted by Debro et. al., the Department of Criminal Justice Administration, Atlanta University. The study consisted of a number of selected variables which were separated into two categories. The categories i included: (1) economic variables such as, occupation, employment, social class and income; (2) demographic variables, included age, sex and marital status. The two categories were then formulated into a working model in which each became an element of the model. All of the elements were defined as independent variables, and fear of crime served as the dependent variable. Once the dependent variable was established, log linear models were used to test the relationship between the independent and dependent variables for each group in the study. The study was conducting by submitting the model to descriptive and analytical procedures. The major findings support the hypotheses that, among the selected economic and demographic variables, these variables had a significant effect on the fear or crime.

McDonald, Carmen. "The Relationship between Senior Healthcare Executives' Emotional Intelligence and Employee Satisfaction." ScholarWorks, 2015. http://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
The healthcare industry evolved on March 23, 2010, when the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law. The general problem prompting the need for this study was that healthcare workers are affected by patient and family anxiety, evolving evidencebased practices and treatments, and regulatory complexities. Outdated managerial skills with leaders lacking emotional intelligence may produce employee dissatisfaction, and satisfied workers may influence the quality of care and patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between senior healthcare leaders' EI and employee satisfaction. EI theory was the conceptual foundation for this research. This quantitative study used a survey to collect EI scores from 25 senior healthcare executives using the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and employee satisfaction scores from the Press Ganey Employee Voice Solution Survey collected by their organizations. Data were analysed using Pearson correlations, independent sample t tests, and ANOVAs to test the variables of EI and employee satisfaction. Assumptions of the t test and ANOVA were met to ensure the sample size was sufficient. The results of the Pearson correlation indicated that employee satisfaction percentile and score were not related to EI within the sample. No differences were found in EI by age, gender, years of experience, or educational level. The changes in healthcare require focusing on social change as it relates to service behaviors by all individuals who have any impact on the patient-care experience.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Political Science. International Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
Tourism is regarded as the world’s largest industry. The various contributions the industry can make towards the global economy and towards creating employment has been acknowledged. In South Africa, sport has been used as a method of nation building and a way of building the country’s national prestige since its re-entry into the global community. The two sectors, tourism and sports, accompany with them the potential to create employment and generate economic spin-offs, as well as enhancing the quality of life for citizens. In light of the many benefits that sport and tourism can generate, South Africa has attempted to host and participate in numerous sports events. Since the end of apartheid, it has hosted several international sporting events, which include the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and the Cricket World Cup in 2003 as well as continental sporting events such as the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996. South Africa has also hosted international events of a smaller degree, which include the Presidents Cup 2003, held in George in the Western Cape. Golf tourism in the Garden Route in particular has escalated to a large degree. Some of the top golf courses can be found there and thus the Western Cape province is closely linked to the golf industry. The main focus of this study is to explore the impact that the Presidents Cup had on the town of George, its community members as well as its contribution towards the tourism industry. It attempts to investigate whether the event generated economic spin offs and whether it has resulted in development for the town and its people. Through a series of face- to- face interviews, the study explores what the perceptions are among key stakeholders in the community concerning the economic and other spin offs. One of the key findings is that the event has contributed to the escalation of various new golf estates in and around George and these has left community members disgruntled. This has resulted in provincial government placing a moratorium on any further development of golf estates along the Garden Route. It has also amounted to property values rising, making it difficult for the locals to afford proper housing. In an attempt to adequately address the issues that have been raised and to preserve and maintain the natural environment for future generations, it is the contention of this study that sustainable development is pivotal. If implemented in a proper way it can have far reaching benefits for all.

Abstract:
Metabolomics is an emerging field that entails the detailed characterization of the ensemble of metabolites produced by living organisms; subfields include drug metabolism and natural environmental toxin production. The first part of the dissertation pursued metabolism of glyceollins, i.e., isoflavones produced by soybeans, that are potential cancer therapy agents. In vivo glyceollin metabolites produced in rats were investigated by on-line Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization Tandem Mass Spectrometry. An odd-electron fragment ion at m/z 148, formed in violation of the even-electron rule, and diagnostic of the glyceollin backbone, was discovered. Based on this finding, a negative mode precursor ion scanning method was developed to screen for glyceollins and their metabolites from biological samples. Products of both Phase I and Phase II metabolism were identified, none of which have been previously reported. Sulfated metabolites were confirmed by accurate mass measurement, while glucuronide conjugation was confirmed by enzyme-assisted glucuronidation by rat liver microsomes. Intact GSH-glyceollin conjugates were not observed, but breakdown products of the GSH pathway, i.e., cysteinylglyceine, cysteine, and acetylated cysteine, were identified as conjugates of oxygenated glyceollins. The identification of GSH by-product conjugates was confirmed in product ion spectra acquired in the negative mode (where peptide anions, and glyceollin-bearing cleaved peptide portions were observed), as well as in the positive mode (where intact oxygenated glyceollin fragments appeared without the initially-present peptide portion). Mass spectral evidence strongly supports a metabolic pathway involving initial epoxidation of glyceollins followed by GSH addition at the epoxidation site. The second part of the dissertation undertook the investigation of secondary metabolites called microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) produced by fungi (mold) that have been reported to have adverse human health effects. MVOCs were collected onto different sorbent materials and analyzed by Thermal Desorption Analysis coupled with on-line Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Fungal MVOCs were characterized from various simulated flooding conditions (brackish, freshwater, and saltwater) and different substrates (nutrient rich vs. low nutrient) to determine diagnostic MVOCs. Ten fungi from simulated environments were identified by genetic sequencing. Cladosporium sp. and Chaetomium sp. were cultivated and their emitted MVOCs, 3-furaldehyde and 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenal, were proposed as diagnostic indicators of these fungi.

The present work has the theme "The maquila in Paraguay: productive model and integration at the beginning of the 21st century". The problem in Paraguay is that the Paraguayan maquila really presents itself as an alternative for Paraguay's integration into the world and regional economy and is still capable of contributing to the economic and social development of such a nation or simply revealing itself as a simple model Economic interest? Thus the objective of the research turns to the verification if the Paraguayan maquila proves itself as an alternative to the integration of the country the world-wide and regional economy, contributing to the economic and social development of the country, or nothing else is that a model of production Inclined to economic interest. The work was done based on field study and observation and still based on bibliographic research. Finally, it was concluded that the Paraguayan maquila, although having a strong economic bias, does not fail to contribute to this country having the possibility of strengthening its economic, political and other relations with the other nations, especially the closest ones, Brazil, which is known to be one of the countries that has invested the most in the model of Paraguayan industrialization. In addition, it was concluded that the Paraguayan maquila shows itself as a tool capable of contributing to the economic and social development of such Nation, since in recent years it has been verified that Paraguay, due to the installation of the maquiladora industries, has revealed economic data Surprising ones such as the increase of its GDP

Abstract:

This thesis presents the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, and its main goal is to define the models which allow the simulation of environments that use this technology. For the development of these simulation models, it is extensively discussed some of the main challenges faced by RFID systems: (i) the signal collision generated by the tags; (ii) the typical Radio Frequency (RF) signal interference according with each RFID use environment; (iii) the relationship between the RF interference problem with the minimum needed power to the activation and communication between tags and reader equipment (the maximum possible distance between tags and reader‘s antenna); (iv) the relationship between the time demanded to the standardized protocols resolve the collision problem and the RF interferences according with the physical environment characteristics where the systems will be installed. Several prediction models for traditional RF based systems were already developed; however, none of them consider the RFID systems characteristics and variables here approached. Due to the fact that each RF system to be installed have its own environment characteristics, it is impossible the definition of one single mathematic equation or model that defines every RF system. Thus, there are different models for different radio communication types in each different condition. The main contribution of this thesis is the presentation of techniques for the model definition that allow the estimation about the RFID system operation, considering problems (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) previously enumerated. A RFID environment simulation tool that uses the developed models is presented. The validation results are promising, and were obtained through the practical rehearsal simulations comparison, and also through the available results in literature comparison.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Marketing))--Peninsula Technikon, 2001
Companies operating in the service industry must take note of three important marketing tasks. The first of these tasks is that companies should realise that they must provide the market with a variety of products. Businesses should therefore furnish the market with a diversified product range. Secondly, customers expect from the business sector to provide them with a quality service that even exceeds their own expectations. Thirdly, to ensure its survival in a competitive environment, the company should improve the productivity of its employees e.g. by improving the level of customer service provided to customers. Kotler (1997: 488) argues that such an improvement in productivity levels of employees can be achieved through employees working more skillfully, increasing the quantity of service by surrendering some quality, industrialising the service, inventing new-product solutions, designing more effective services, presenting customers with the incentive to substitute their own labour for company labour, or using technology to save time and money. Keeping these facts in mind and taking into consideration that tourists have been arriving in South Africa from all over the world for decades, it is of great importance for visitors to South Africa to receive customer service of the highest quality. A tourist travelling in the Republic of South Africa will most probably make use of a local travel agency if they should be in need of any further travel related services. A travel agent representing a particular travel agency, will not be engaged in the sale of travel related services only to tourists, but also to any other consumer interested in making use of the Travel Agencies' services. The Association of Travel Agents' (ASATA) code of conduct stresses that "ach travel agent engaged in the sale of travel-related services direct to consumers shall maintain the highest standard of service possible, complying with all statutory requirements, including those applicable to travel agents and with all provisions of this code" (Business Practices Committee Consumer Code For Travel Agencies, 1994: 5). This thesis is an analysis of the "marketing concept", with specific reference to customer service. It focuses on the top management in the travel agency industry and will be concerned with the degree to which top management is marketing orientated and the influence their marketing-orientated outlook will have on the performance of the travel agency. With marketing being defined as: "the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organisational goals", it must be emphasized that marketing can be seen as, amongst others, the anticipation and satisfaction of customer needs (Boshoff & Terblanche, 2000: 4). This research study would also include a study of the travel agency's level of customer service, which will have a direct reflection on top management's marketing outlook as well as the travel agency's level of performance.

Abstract:
This study consists of an investigation on the incidence of material waste in the building industry. Initiaily, a classification of different kinds af building waste is presented and the results of some previous studies are discussed. Also, some principies of materiais management are analysed, and a number of concepts related to control systems are presented. Then, the methodology adopted in the research is described and the results of a study carried out in five different building sites situated in the city of Porto Alegre are analysed, in which the amount of building waste was monitored and its causes identified. The research indicated that there are considerable variations in the incidence of waste for different materials and in different sites. These indices tend to be much higher than the values mentioned in the bibliography. The study also demostrated that there are oportunities for reducing waste through improvements in the starage and handling of materials and, especially, by employing managerial methods which allow the identification and control of waste during the construction process. Finally, a number of guidelines for implementing material waste control systems are proposed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As data centers continue to grow rapidly, engineers will face the greater challenge in finding ways to minimize the cost of powering data centers while improving their reliability. The continuing growth of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics (PV) system presents an opportunity to reduce the long-term energy cost of data centers and to enhance reliability when used with utility AC power and energy storage. However, the inter-temporal and the intermittency nature of solar energy makes it necessary for the proper coordination and management of these energy sources. This thesis proposes an energy management system in DC data center using a neural network to coordinate AC power, energy storage, and PV system that constitutes a reliable electrical power distribution to the data center. Software modeling of the DC data center was first developed for the proposed system followed by the construction of a lab-scale model to simulate the proposed system. Five scenarios were tested on the hardware model and the results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the neural network approach. Results further prove the feasibility in utilizing renewable energy source and energy storage in DC data centers. Analysis and performance of the proposed system will be discussed in this thesis, and future improvement for improved energy system reliability will also be presented.

Abstract:
Recently, nonpolar InGaN/GaN optoelectronic structures have been widely studied for applications in ultrafast communication, solid-state lighting, solar cell, sensing, photonic integrated circuits and quantum cryptography. When grown in a core-shell architecture (where the nonpolar, multiple disk active region is radially grown on the sidewall of a hexagonal GaN nanowire), these devices exhibit superior properties that mainly arise from the availability of a larger active region. Recently, the viability of using such architectures in electrically injected, low-threshold single-nanowire laser operating at room temperature has been experimentally demonstrated. In contrast, axially (or expitaxially) grown disk-in-wire structures suffer from a smaller gain-volume and, thus, have failed to produce optically pumped lasing emissions. From fundamental physics point of view, the benefits of using nonpolar m-axis and a-axis oriented InGaN/GaN in the active region are as follows: a) lesser degree of lattice mismatch, resulting in a weaker strain field; b) absence of spontaneous (pyroelectric) polarization; c) smaller piezoelectric polarization, induced internal potential, and electric field in the carrier transport

ABSTRACT: This work was carried through in Toyota Caetano Portugal, SA., in thedepartment of drawing, and was focuses on the mapping of the flow of theprocess of Toyota Dyna STD. This was a major flaw in the company, since it does not have the mapping ofthe flow of the production process system. With the survey and creation of all this information could point to improvementsthroughout the production process and that these were only suggested, sincethere was no availability of time to put into practise, since the mapping of theentire process was very long. The mapping of the flow of the process is an essential tool for any company, and as such, further studies and improvement of existing processes in thecompany have as a support the mapping of the flow of the process establishedfor this work. One of the disadvantages of the survey was due to lack of time, because it wasnot possible to implement and test the improvements observed during themapping. However throughout this report listed some suggestions for proposals to improve.

Abstract:
I studied evolutionary history in the angiosperm order Apiales, with a special emphasis on interactions between form, time, and space. Four broad categories of problems were addressed: interfamilial relationships in Apiales, the assignment of genera traditionally assigned to the Apiaceae subfamily Hydrocotyloideae, the estimation of divergence times of the major clades, and the reconstruction of the biogeographic history of Apiales. We used molecular markers with different evolutionary properties and rates derived from the plastid (trnD-trnT and rpl16), nuclear (RPB2), and mitochondrial (nad1 intron 2) genomes, from more than 250 species representing all major clades in the order. The nuclear RPB2 region exhibited evidence of at least six duplication events in Apiales and provided a rich source of information for understanding the origins of polyploid lineages, especially in Araliaceae. Sequence comparisons among the copies show that exon regions are highly conserved. All copies appear to be functional but may have undergone subfunctionalization. Phylogenetic analyses of the three genomes suggest that Hydrocotyloideae should be divided into as many as six evolutionary lineages, but that most taxa should be included in subfamilies Azorelloideae and Mackinlayoideae. Relationships among and within the major clades of Azorelloideae need further analyses since many genera appeared non-monophyletic (e.g., Azorella, Schizeilema, and Eremocharis). Mackinlayoideae appeared as the earliest diverging lineage of Apiaceae, but the plastid and nuclear trees were incongruent in the placement of the Platysace clade relative to Mackinlayoideae and the rest of Apiaceae. Among the remaining clades of suborder Apiineae, Myodocapaceae appeared sister to Apiaceae in both plastid and nuclear trees, preceded by the divergence of Araliaceae and then Pittosporaceae. At the base of the gene trees in Apiales, Griseliniaceae and Torricelliaceae formed successive sisters to Apiineae. The placement of Pennantiaceae as sister to the rest of Apiales was confirmed by plastid data, but was not found in the nuclear trees. The order appears to have originated in the Cretaceous, with Apiineae having an age of c. 100 Mya. Australasia appears to be the most likely center of origin for Apiineae and most of its major clades, except Azorelloideae (South America) and Apioideae-Saniculoideae (sub-Saharan Africa).

Wang, Wei. "Newspaper commentaries on terrorism in China and Australia: A contrastive genre study." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a contrastive genre study which explores newspaper commentaries on terrorism in Chinese and Australian newspapers. The study examines the textual patterning of the Australian and Chinese commentaries, interpersonal and intertextual features of the texts as well as considers possible contextual factors which might contribute to the formation of the newspaper commentaries in the two different languages and cultures. For the framework of its analysis, the study draws on systemic functional linguistics, English for Specific Purposes and new rhetoric genre studies, critical discourse analysis, and discussions of the role of the mass media in the two different cultures. The study reveals that Chinese writers often use explanatory rather than argumentative expositions in their newspaper commentaries. They seem to distance themselves from outside sources and seldom indicate endorsement of these sources. Australian writers, on the other hand, predominantly use argumentative expositions to argue their points of view. They integrate and manipulate outside sources in various ways to establish and provide support for the views they express. It is argued that these textual and intertextual practices are closely related to contextual factors, especially the roles of the media and opinion discourse in contemporary China and Australia. The study, by providing both a textual and contextual view of the genre under investigation in the two languages and cultures, aims to establish a framework for contrastive rhetoric research which moves beyond the text into the context of production and interpretation of the texts as a way of exploring reasons for the linguistic and rhetorical choices made in the two sets of texts.

Abstract:
Florence O. Holmes, for the Masters Of Science Degree in Behavioral Analysis and Therapy, presented on July, 2015, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: ACCEPTABILITY OF INTERVENTIONS OF STAFF IN SHORT TERM CARE SETTING FOR CHILDREN WITH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ISSUES COMPARING RATING AND HIERARCHICAL SELECTION MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Mark Dixon, Ph.D. The present study asked twenty active treatment team members, in a children’s behavioral health hospital in Springfield, IL to answer a pen and paper survey. This study extended research on treatment acceptability by replicating, Baker and LeBlanc (2011), who compared ratings and hierarchical selections in a long term care facility with older adults. Specifically, participants were given the opportunity to rate treatments using a treatment acceptability survey, and were then given a choice (i.e., asked to select which they would be most comfortable implementing) between various treatment options with using a variety of scenarios and choices. In this study it was interesting to find that though an individual selected a treatment as being a good treatment, when asked what they would feel comfortable using in a pinch did not always match what they related as being acceptable. In comparison the results of Baker and LeBlanc are very similar to the current study. In contrast, the rating for the behavioral intervention was higher in the present study and was also selected much more than in Baker and LeBlanc. Baker and LeBlanc reported statistically significant correlations between selections and ratings. Although this study did not recruit enough participants to allow for a statistical analysis, 50% of the participants in this study had a match for what they rated the highest compared to what they selected the most.

Jones, Emily Rowberry. "Recognizing the Need to Dissemble Emotions in Hypothetical Social Scenarios: Differences in Children with Language Impairment." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2008. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the ability of children with LI to recognize the need to dissemble emotions. Participants included 22 children with LI and 22 typically developing peers, ages 7;1 to 11;0 years. Children were presented with 10 hypothetical social scenarios in which the main character experienced an emotion which should be dissembled for social purposes. The participant's responses were categorized as dissemblance or display. Children with LI reported that they would hide the experienced emotion significantly less often than their typical peers. Children in both groups reported higher levels of dissemblance when asked what their parents would want them to do. There was no significant difference between language groups for this question.

Abstract:
Cryptobranchus guildayi is described as an extinct species of large salamander that is closely related to the hellbender, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis. The validity of this extinct taxon has been questioned, so an expanded osteological sample of modern hellbenders was used for comparative purposes with the C. guildayi fossil material. Based on this analysis, all supposed distinguishing morphological characteristics used to define C. guildayi can be observed in specimens of C. alleganiensis, or are based on misidentifications. Therefore, Cryptobranchus guildayi is considered to be conspecific with C. alleganiensis and taxonomically should be considered a junior synonym of the latter. The reassignment of the C. guildayi specimens to C. alleganiensis and examination of undescribed fossil specimens from the same region expands the prehistoric range of the species to the Potomac River and its tributaries and also extends the age of the species to the Irvingtonian North American land mammal age.

Mines, Levi Walden Dyer. "Porous polyurethane foam for use as a particle collection substrate in a Nanoparticle Respiratory Deposition Sampler." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
Porous polyurethane foam was evaluated as a potential replacement substrate for the eight nylon meshes currently being used in the diffusion stage of the Nanoparticle Respiratory Deposition (NRD) Sampler. A semi-empirical particle deposition model and preliminary tests were used to select the dimensions of foam substrate needed to match the collection of the NRD sampler at recommended sampling conditions. The foam substrate consisted of a cylinder nominally 25-mm diameter by 40 mm in depth, housed in a conductive plastic cassette cowl (internal diameter of 23 mm) compatible with the existing NRD sampler. Pristine foam was evaluated for metals content via acid-assisted microwave digestion and inductively coupled plasma-optical emissions spectroscopy (ICP-OES) chemical analysis. Foam collection efficiency was evaluated using salt (NaCl) and metal fume test aerosols in independent tests. Foam collection efficiency was compared to the nanoparticulate matter (NPM) criterion (established to reflect the total deposition in the human respiratory system for particles smaller than 300 nm) and theoretical modeling. The collection efficiency of NaCl particles was similar to the NPM criterion (R2 = 0.98) and the model underestimated the experimental efficiency (R2 = 0.38). Increased collection efficiency of metal fume was observed for particles larger than 70 nm presumably due to increased interception effects of fractal shaped particles. The pressure drop across the pristine foam was 1/12th that of the nylon meshes. Foam and nylon meshes were loaded with metal fume particles to evaluate performance under simulated field conditions. Changes in collection efficiency and pressure drop were used as measures of performance. Foam had substantially lower changes in collection efficiency and pressure drop with ~ 19 mg metal fume loaded compared to the nylon meshes with ~ 3 mg metal fume loaded.

Ye, Lei. "Integrating Technology, Curriculum, and Online Resources: A Multilevel Model Study of Impacts on Science Teachers and Students." DigitalCommons@USU, 2013. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
This scale-up study investigated the impact of a teacher technology tool (Curriculum Customization Service, CCS), curriculum, and online resources on earth science teachers’ attitudes, beliefs, and practices and on students’ achievement and engagement with science learning. Participants included 73 teachers and over 2,000 ninth-grade students within five public school districts in the western U.S. To assess the impact on teachers, changes between pre- and postsurveys were examined. Results suggest that the CCS tool appeared to significantly increase both teachers’ awareness of other earth science teachers’ practices and teachers’ frequency of using interactive resources in their lesson planning and classroom teaching. A standard multiple regression model was developed. In addition to “District,” “Training condition”(whether or not teachers received CCS training) appeared to predict teachers’ attitudes, beliefs, and practices. Teachers who received CCS training tended to have lower postsurvey scores than their peers who had no CCS training. Overall, usage of the CCS tool tended to be low, and there were differences among school districts. To assess the impact on students, changes were examined between pre- and postsurveys of (1) knowledge assessment and (2) students’ engagement with science learning. Students showed pre- to postsurvey improvements in knowledge assessment, with small to medium effect sizes. A nesting effect (students clustered within teachers) in the Earth’s Dynamic Geosphere (EDG) knowledge assessment was identified and addressed by fitting a two-level hierarchical linear model (HLM). In addition, significant school district differences existed for student post-knowledge assessment scores. On the student engagement questionnaire, students tended to be neutral or to slightly disagree that science learning was important in terms of using science in daily life, stimulating their thinking, discovering science concepts, and satisfying their own curiosity. Students did not appear to change their self-reported engagement level after the intervention. Additionally, three multiple regression models were developed. Factors from the district, teacher, and student levels were identified to predict student post-knowledge assessments and their engagement with science learning. The results provide information to both the research community and practitioners.

Abstract:
Ineffective professional development is a longstanding problem in education. Locally, the school district in the study lacked a comprehensive system for evaluating their secondary level professional development programs. The purpose of this case study was to investigate the district's professional development program, specifically examining its perceived strengths and weaknesses. The conceptual framework of the study was systems theory and the adaptive schools reform model. The research questions examined the perceptions of various school personnel on their experiences with the current professional development program at the study district's high school. Individual interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of 3 teachers, 4 teacher-facilitators, 1 professional development committee member, and 1 school administrator. Interview data were concurrently analyzed using inductive analysis and typologies derived from the literature. The results were used to create a project consisting of a comprehensive policy proposal that provides detailed guidance and procedures for every stage of the school's professional development program cycle. The study project was designed to assist educators, administrators, and school districts in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing professional development programs that are tailored to meet the needs of local educators. This study promotes positive social change through facilitating the development of improved professional development programs that increase teacher quality and student achievement.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is designed to assess the effectiveness of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime and analyze theories for effectively analyzing countries that are a risk for proliferating nuclear armaments. The initial phase of my research is designed to assess the existing literature and primary theoretical approaches for analyzing nuclear non-proliferation initiatives and potential nuclear proliferators. My main means of analysis will be to examine the national and international actors involved in each case. With this method, I plan to analyze a government at the level of each of its ruling institutions. Each of these institutions will be analyzed in the context of Joseph Cirincione's five drivers and barriers: security, prestige, domestic politics, technology, and economics. This study will then review multiple historical cases of countries and treaties related to the nuclear non-proliferation issue in the context of my method of analysis. In particular, each historical study will discuss major actors and institutions with respect to the five major proliferation concepts, as a means of demonstrating the validity of my method. The primary section of my thesis will be the application of my method to one of the preeminent nuclear proliferation threats today: Iran. After a discussion of the physical status of Iran's nuclear program, I will begin my analysis in terms of my concepts, and will examine the principal actors involved in the Iranian nuclear dispute. These will be the Iran's moderate and conservative factions, as well as the U.S., Israel, the EU-3, and IAEA, and they will be examined in the context of the five drivers and barriers. The final section will be my overall risk analysis for Iran. My preliminary analysis is that regime survival is the most critical issue when it comes to the principal motivations of a state to develop nuclear arms. If this is correct, policy options designed to take advantage of the actors' positions in Iran can be formulated based on the specific conditions that prevail in Iran.

Alam, Mohammad Rafiqul. "Detecting wormhole and Byzantine attacks in mobile ad hoc networks." Thesis, Curtin University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1701.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent advancements in the wireless technology and their wide-spread utilization have made tremendous enhancements in productivity in the corporate and industrial sectors. However, these recent progresses have also introduced new security vulnerabilities. Since the wireless shared medium is completely exposed to outsiders, it is susceptible to attacks that could target any of the OSI layers in the network stack. For example, jamming of the physical layer, disruption of the medium access control (MAC) layer coordination packets, attacks against the routing infrastructure, targeted attacks on the transport protocol, or even attacks intended to disrupt specific applications. Unfortunately, the effects of applying the security techniques used in wired networks, such as access control and authentication, to wireless and mobile networks have been unsatisfactory due the unique features of such networks. As a result, achieving security goals for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) has gained significant attention in recent years. Many critical applications of MANET, such as emergency rescue operations, military tactical communication, and business operations like mining and oil drilling platforms, require a friendly and cooperative environment. The aim of this study is to design detection mechanisms for traditional wormhole and Byzantine wormhole attacks by using the topological comparison and round trip time (RTT) measurements. The first step for detecting traditional wormhole attack is that an initiator of the detection process populates its one-hop neighbor list, and also calculates the average round trip time (RTTavg). Meanwhile, a list of suspected neighbors is generated on the basis of RTTavg and RTT. Then, topological information is exchanged between the initiator and all the suspected neighbors to detect the presence of a wormhole link.In this thesis, we also focus on detecting Byzantine wormhole attack in MANET. In the case of detecting such attacks, the initiator creates its one hop neighbor list and calculates the average RTTavg. The initiator also generates a suspected list of its three hop neighbors. In the next phase, the initiator exchanges topological information with all the one hop neighbors to detect the presence of any Byzantine wormhole tunnel. One of the major concerns for the topological comparison based approach is to give the initially suspected nodes a second chance to prove their reliability by exchanging topological information. We have implemented the detection algorithms in ad hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) and optimized link state routing (OLSR) routing protocols. Then, performance evaluation of the proposed detection mechanisms is conducted. We also compared our proposed detection methods with some of the existing detection methods by simulation. The results show that our schemes can achieve better detection performance.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis comprises a collection of short fiction, Maps for the Lost, and a critical essay, “Human / Nature Ecotones: Climate Change and the Ecological Imagination.” In ecological terms, areas of interaction between adjacent ecosystems are known as ecotones. Sites of relationship between biotic communities, they are charged with fertility and evolutionary possibility. While postcolonial scholarship is concerned with borders as points of cross-cultural contact, ecocritical thought focuses upon the ecotone that occurs at the interface between human and non-human nature. In their occupation of the liminal zones between human and natural realms, the characters and narratives of Maps for the Lost reveal and nurture the porosity of conventional demarcations. In the title story, a Czech artist maps the globe by night in order to find his lover. The buried geographies of human landscapes coalesce with those of the non-human realm: the territories of wolves and the scent-trails of a fox mingle imperceptibly with nocturnal Prague and the ransacked villages of post-war Croatia. In “Seeds,” a narrative structured around the process of biological growth, the lost memories of an elderly woman are returned to her by her garden. “The Skin of the Ocean” traces the obsession of a diver who sinks his yacht under the weight of coral and fish, while in “Drift,” an Iranian refugee writes letters along the tide-line of a Tasmanian beach. The essay identifies the inadequacy of literature and literary scholarship’s response to the threat of climate change as a failure of the imagination, reflecting the transgressive dimension of the crisis itself, and the dualistic legacy which still informs Western discourse on non-human nature. In order to redress this shortfall, which I argue the current generations of writers have an urgent moral responsibility to do, it is critical that we learn to understand the natural world of which we are a part, in ways that cast off the limitations of conventional representation. Paradoxically, it is the profoundly disruptive (apocalyptic?) nature of the climate crisis itself, which may create the imaginative traction for that shift in comprehension, forcing us, through loss, to interpret the world in ways that have been forgotten, or are fundamentally new. By analysing Alexis Wright’s The Swan Book, and Les Murray’s “Presence” sequence, the essay explores the correlation between imaginative and ecological processes, and the role of voice, embodiment, patterning and story in negotiations of nature and place. In the context of the asymptotical essence of the relation between text and world, and the paradox of phenomenological representation, it calls for a deeper cultural engagement with scientific discourse and indigenous philosophy, in order to illuminate the multiplicity and complexity of human connections to the non-human natural world
