Abstract:
The attempt to influence public opinion on the subject of taste constitutes a primary aim in Joseph Addison's (1672-1719) and Richard Steele's (1672-1729) essay-periodicals, The Tatler (1709-1711), The Spectator (1711-1712, 1714), and The Guardian (1713). Addison and Steele emphasize the need for a progressive culture of education, where human nature is continuously refined and improved, and where man is expected to cultivate his nature and his judgement of taste as part of a process of personal self-fulfilment. However, along with such beliefs, Addison and Steele explore a less recognized trait where nature (human nature as well as the chain of being) is much less dynamic and where education and the cultivation of taste are regarded as reprehensible unless they reproduce a predetermined order of nature. By occasionally calling attention to such a trait, Addison and Steele appear to wish to lend balance to the discourse on education and taste, and to reduce the risk implicit in a too radical cultivation of taste and nature, namely, the threat of a blurred concept of the chain of being and a certain indistinctness between diverse social groups.

Abstract:
The period 1709 to 1720 was of historic importance in the Ukrainian struggle for freedom and independence. On April 5, 1710, on Turkish territory in Bendery, Ukraine’s first constitution was inaugurated. The main author was Orlyk. After the Battle of Poltava in June 1709 King Charles XII of Sweden and the newly elected Hetman Pylyp Orlyk were in exile. In the fall of 1709 Hetman Ivan Mazepa had died in Moldavian Bendery. Orlyk, his chancellor, was elected hetman of Ukraine in the spring of 1710. The Bendery Constitution is not only an expression of the rights of a free Ukrainian people. It may be the main earliest document in modern Ukrainian intellectual history. The constitution is probably also the oldest constitution in the world of the modern era. The first Ukrainian constitution confirmed the status of the “ancient Cossack nation” and its century long struggle for freedom and independence. It guarantees the supremacy of a Kyiv metropolitan. A large number of the rights of the Cossacks are provided for as well as the protection by the king of Sweden. In 1714 around 40 of the Ukrainians in Moldavia left for exile together with Swedes returning home. The journey across Europe first ended in Stralsund (Swedish Pommerania) in May 1715. Later that year to avoid capture Hetman Orlyk and the Ukrainians (including parts of the government) left Stralsund by ship for Ystad, Sweden. Orlyk and family came to reside in the fortress city of Kristianstad in southern Sweden 1716 to 1719 while his government continued to Stockholm. During 1719 to 1720 Orlyk joined them in the Swedish capital. The Ukrainian government-in-exile in Stockholm was supported by the Swedish government of Frederic I and especially by the prominent Swedish politician Daniel von Höpken. The latter aided Orlyk and his ministers financially and most likely with living quarters. In June 1720 von Höpken in a letter advised the king that Orlyk should be financially supported and be given the opportunity to leave Sweden to continue the fight for freedom and independence of Ukraine and lead the Ukrainian Cossacks against Russia. In January 1719 Orlyk had been greatly encouraged by the Treaty of Vienna between Austria, Hannover and Saxony against Russia and its aggressive policy in Eastern Europe. In a last letter dated Stockholm October 10, 1720, Orlyk wrote in Latin to King Frederic I that when leaving Sweden he first planned to visit the King of Great Britain, then Vienna and after that via Hungary go further east. In foreign policy Orlyk’s best hope was King George I of Great Britain. He was willing to go to war against Russia but in the end could find no partners. British naval squadrons entered the Baltic Sea from 1719 to 1721 but could not attack Russian ports. The result was that George I advised Frederic I to conclude peace with Peter I on what terms he could. At Nystad in 1721, however, the question of Ukraine’s freedom and independence was not on the agenda of the Swedish negotiators. The Bendery constitution of 1710 remains as a monument to Ukraine’s first main attempt to break away from Russian domination. Full freedom and independence of Ukraine was finally achieved in 2014.

Abstract:
The second company of India - which follows a first one, founded by Colbert - was constituted on 1719, upon law's authority; it received an important capital and large territories, situated in America, Africa and Asia. Since 1730, it renounced to Louisiana and West Indies, and gave up to trade with India and China. During the same time, it spread its own naval building, and improved the experience of its naval staff. It increased also the bulk of its trade, to such a level that its succeeded in competing with foreign companies. Despite this success, it went into a lot of troubles; the benefit was becoming smaller and smaller as increased the freights, the market of which was reduced, and the goods were sold not easily; loads grew larger and larger during the wars, as ships had to be escorted and factories defended, the company, alone, being obliged to protect them, lacking any governmental help. For those reasons, the colonial staff, suggested to extend the French rule to indian territories, in order to find new means; but shareholders and French government did not agree; consequently, the company could not overcome these difficulties, and was obliged to postpone the trade in 1769

Hermann, Uwe. "Effects of distribution planning systems on the cost of delivery in unique make-to-order manufacturing." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2010. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1719/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the effects of simulation through the use of a distribution planning system (DPS) on distribution costs in the setting of unique make-to-order manufacturers (UMTO). In doing so, the German kitchen furniture industry (GKFI) serves as an example and supplier of primary data. On the basis of a detailed market analysis this thesis will demonstrate that this industry, which mostly works with its own vehicles for transport, is in urgent need of innovative logistics strategies. Within the scope of an investigation into the current practical and theoretical use of DPS, it will become apparent that most known DPS are based on the application of given or set delivery tour constraints. Those constraints are often not questioned in practice and in theory nor even attempted to be omitted, but are accepted in day-to-day operation. This paper applies a different approach. In the context of this research, a practically applied DPS is used supportively for the removal of time window constraints (TWC) in UMTO delivery. The same DPS is used in ceteris paribus condition for the re-routing of deliveries and hereby supports the findings regarding the costliness of TWC. From this experiment emerges an overall cost saving of 50.9% and a 43.5% reduction of kilometres travelled. The applied experimental research methodology and the significance of the resulting savings deliver the opportunity to analyse the removal of delivery time window restrictions as one of many constraints in distribution logistics. The economic results of this thesis may become the basis of discussion for further research based on the applied methodology. From a practical point of view, the contributions to new knowledge are the cost savings versus the change of demand for the setting of TWC between the receiver of goods and the UMTO supplier. On the side of theoretical knowledge, this thesis contributes to filling the gap on the production – distribution problem from a UMTO perspective. Further contributions to knowledge are delivered through the experimental methodology with the application of a DPS for research in logistics simulation.

Tocci, Nathalie. "EU accession dynamics and conflict resolution : the case of Cyprus, 1988-2002." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2003. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1719/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 1993, the European Commission, the EU member states and the Republic of Cyprus raised the expectation that the prospect of Cyprus' EU membership would act as a catalyst for a settlement of the island's conflict. Yet throughout the 1990s the divisions between the positions of the principal parties widened. In addition, the 1990s witnessed an escalation of tensions in the Easter Mediterranean, between Greece and Turkey, as well as between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The 2002 negotiations failed to deliver an agreement, bringing closer the prospect of an unintended consolidation of the green line dividing the island. This study analyses the case of Cyprus and the EU with three objectives in mind. First, it explores the inter-relationship between the evolution of the conflict and the development of EU-Cyprus relations within the accession process. Why did the EU accession process fail to catalyse a settlement on the island, or at least a rapprochement between the conflicting parties. Second, it explains the factors driving the conduct of EU policies towards the conflict. Finally, this study seeks to show that the European Union framework could have added important incentives for a settlement and resolution of the conflict by providing an alternative context within which to address the basic needs of the principal parties. The case of Cyprus casts a different light on the problems involved in mobilising the EU's multi-level framework of governance in the field of external relations, particularly in situations of active or latent crisis, typical of ethno-political conflicts.

Momen, Sifat. "Design and modelling of decentralised task allocation mechanisms in groups of mobile agents." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1719/.

Full text
Abstract:
Division of labour is a fundamental field of research within the context of multi-agent (particularly swarm based systems) and multi-robot systems. Eusocial insects, for instance ants and bees, are known to display remarkable capabilities of allocating tasks to nest mates when the colony gets perturbed by any internal and/or external factors. Proper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of division of labour among these social insects would enable more effective designing and developing of artificial swarm based systems which in turn can be used in tackling various real world problems. At the same time, a properly built model can be used to serve as a platform for the biologists to test their research hypotheses. These key benefits have been the prime motivations of this thesis. The thesis is based on the behaviour of ant colonies and especially on how they allocate tasks in different situations. The objectives of the thesis are twofold: (1) to develop an artificial simulated system that is ant-like and (2) to explore, identify, develop and analyse task allocation strategies within the realms of colony performance. The first objective of the thesis is approached by investigating the behaviour of ant colonies from the existing literature and modelling their behaviours using an agent based modelling approach. To determine whether the model has met the first objective, three questions are posed: (A) Is the emergent system scalable? (B) Is the emergent system flexible? and (C) Is the system robust? For a system to be ant-like, the system has to not only give the appearance of ant-like behaviour but also has to meet these three criteria. As a part of the second objective of the thesis, three task allocation strategies based on ant colony behaviour are proposed. Furthermore, the strategies are critically analysed to investigate the benefits of each of the strategies and also to discover under what circumstances which strategies would perform better. The research reported in this thesis is intended to provide a better understanding of the design issues of task allocation strategies thus enabling researchers to use this as a guide to design effective task allocation strategies within the concerned multi-agent systems.

Abstract:
Early eighteenth-century politics were dominated by the rise to power and fall from grace of Sir Robert Walpole. This thesis examines varied responses to the Walpole regime from opposition Whig, Tory, Jacobite and pro-government writers. The discussion focuses on history plays from the period 1719-1745 and considers the role of these texts as vehicles for political comment and propaganda. Of key concern throughout the thesis is the rhetoric of patriotism. Patriot ideology pervades the texts and crosses conventional party boundaries. Alongside patriotism other themes pertinent to political commentary of the period are discussed. In chapter one, 'Ancient Britons and Liberty' texts appropriating Saxon and Celtic history are discussed in relation to contemporary concerns for maintaining the political liberty of the British nation. In chapter two, 'Kings, Ministers, Favourites and Patriot Rhetoric' plays that focus on favouritism are examined alongside contemporary criticism of Walpole as 'favourite' of the Hanoverians. In chapter three, 'Gender and Party Politics in Adaptations of Shakespeare's Histories' the updating of Shakespeare to suit contemporary taste and the impact of these alterations are reflected in a repoliticisation of the plays for party agendas. In chapter four, 'Britain, Empire and Julius Cæsar' representations of Cæsar that suggest positive interpretations of the Emperor conflict with contemporary opinion regarding his contribution to the fall of the Roman republic. Implications for Britain’s own colonial endeavour are also considered in chapter five, ‘Religion and the Ideology of Empire in Turkish History Plays'. This chapter examines plays in which the Scanderbeg history is appropriated to offer a model of British colonialism. Reflecting on Britain's past glories or, past failings, the plays discussed in this thesis offer not only comment on contemporary politics but also representations of an idealised Britishness. By demonstrating what Britons had once been these texts suggest what modem Britons should be.

Chevallier, Cuenod Marjolaine. "Pierre Poiret (1646-1719), cartésien et mystique." Paris 1, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988PA010511.

Abstract:
Pierre poiret, born metz (lorraine), died rijnsburg (holland), was a non-conformist huguenot pastor. As a student in basel, and in his first work, cogitationes rationales (1675), he espoused cartesianism but abandoned it after meeting the roman catholic prophetess, antoinette bourignon, whese disciple and champion he became. Though critical of descartes, malebranche and especially spinoza and opposed to the arrogance of reason, poiret remained a philosopher, arguing, for example, that ideas were god-created. In his theological system, l'occonomie divine (1687), he explained salvation and refuted predestination by asserting that man was free to accept grace or reject it. As a forerunner of ocumenism he regarded belonging to any "party" of christendom as immaterial to salvation. He sought to reassure french protestants that, even if compelled by the revocation of the edict of nantes to convert to roman catholicism, they could thereby serve god; though he himself refused to convert when fenelon asked him to. Poiret disseminated works of roman catholic mysticism to the protestant community in exile, as belonging to a store of common traesure (such as the imitation of christ) from which all might derive edification. He considered mystical theology to be the true theology, the theology of the heart. There was a marked quietist tendency among the writers he published (such as madame guyon, whose complete works he brought out). A bibliography of poiret's works, which were much published and much translated, and of the works of which he was himself the publisher, shows the audience he commanded in his day. His influence long persisted in the world of german and swiss separatist pietism and in britain, where john wesley used his short pedagogical traetise as a catechism. Standing at the confluence of various intellectual and spiritual currents, poiret, who is still neglected in france, was an important intermediary

Abstract:
In 1710-1711, at the time of preparation for the Prut campaign, Peter I sent three envoys to Venice, namely Urbich, Boris and Karetta. In 1716-1720, Becklemishev was appointed permanent Russuan economic representative in Venice. The article presents an analysis of credential letters of Peter the Great’s envoys in Venice in connection with the pre-existing tradition and with due regard to the specifics of the Russian diplomatic ceremonial. The author aims to describe stylistic specifics of Peter I’s credential letter and to determine its role for the subsequent tradition.
