Abstract:

Abstract:
Knowledge of Asian monsoon variability remains limited because of sparse instrumental data available only for short time series. Here, an updated tree-ring width record covering the period ad 1037–2009 was developed for the south-central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship ( r = 0.71) between the tree-ring index and annual (previous July to current June) precipitation series for the instrumental period 1963–2008, which accounts for 50.41% of the rainfall variability. Based on a linear regression model, the longest available regional precipitation history was reconstructed. Spatial correlation between tree ring width and annual precipitation data from previous July to current June indicates that the reconstruction is representative of precipitation changes on the south-central TP. Regional wet conditions occurred during ad 1095–1161, 1376–1403, 1414–1446, 1518–1537, 1549–1572, 1702–1757, 1848–1878 and 1891–1913, while dry periods were identified during ad1189–1242, 1256–1314, 1329–1357, 1470–1491, 1573–1623, 1636–1686, 1761–1821, 1823–1847, 1879–1890 and 1931–1985. The negative correlation between our reconstructed precipitation and India monsoon rainfall series indicates the seesaw pattern over northern and southern monsoon Asia. It is suggested that solar radiation-induced sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the tropical Pacific influence regional rainfall patterns. The degree of this influence has been stable at the multidecadal scale during the past 1000 years.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractKarl Leonhard Reinhold (1757–1823) is hailed as one of the most influential thinkers of early post-Kantian philosophy. He is best known for popularising critical philosophy through his Letters on the Kantian Philosophy, first published in the Teutsche Merkur (1786), and for restructuring it into a kind of axiomatic-deductive system in the Elementarphilosophie (1789–1794). An axiomatic-deductive system is based on one or several self-evident principles from which all subsequent principles are deduced. Reinhold’s restructuring of Kant’s critical project was highly influential for Fichte and the early Schelling, and thus, for the transition from Kantian critical philosophy to German Idealism. Most Reinhold scholars interpret the system of the Elementarphilosophie as belonging to the pre-critical tradition. Counter to this view, I consider the possibility that Reinhold was influenced by the idea of a philosophical system put forth by Kant in the Architectonic. I proceed by first discussing Kant’s criteria of both a pre-critical and a critical system, before assessing which the Elementarphilosophie can best be described as. I conclude that although Reinhold’s system is more adequately classified as a critical than as a pre-critical system, it must ultimately be viewed as something new.

Millard, Les. "H02 The Foundling-Chapel brawl 1804: Robert and Mary Willan, trial by social media." British Journal of Dermatology 188, Supplement_4 (June 2023). http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/bjd/ljad113.284.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The social media of the late 18th and early 19th centuries was no less humorous, critical and potentially personally destructive than now, despite its form, distribution and time frame being quantitatively different. Cartoons and prints, broadsheets, leaflets and pamphlets were widely distributed by hand for sale cheaply, being passed on for maximal effect. Gillray, Rowlandson and the Cruikshanks were the masters of these media, but others were prolific and no less accomplished at targeting royalty, religions, politicians and individuals of particular merit, such as physicians. One such satirical caricaturist and pamphleteer was James Sayers (1748–1823), a favourite of Prime Minister William Pitt. In 1804, he wrote a verse satire, attacking Dr Robert Willan (1757–1812) and his wife Mary (1770–1844) after an incident in the Chapel at The Foundling Hospital (Nichols RH, Wray FA. History of the Foundling Hospital. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1935), where his sister Elizabeth was in dispute with them over the occupancy of a pew (pews were rented by the hospital governors on an annual basis). They were both subjected to a clever—not always subtle—diatribe for some 2 years about their personal and professional integrity, including their religion. Willan was described as a ‘learned leech’, with the implication that this successful physician was not just bleeding patients therapeutically, but also financially. His patients were ‘scabby’ and therefore detestable, and he was a lesser man because he was no longer a Quaker. For Mary, there were intimations about her temperament, her motives for marriage and her personal hygiene. The recently married couple had moved from 14 Bloomsbury Square to nearby number 10, with her two daughters by her previous marriage. There, their son Richard was born in 1802. Robert Willan withdrew from his work at the Carey Street Dispensary in 1803. Re-reading this rare publication by Sayers, which may seem a negative satire, inadvertently provides clues to the personal and social context of the Willan’s early married life.

Abstract:
Abstract John Philip Kemble, actor, manager, and play adapter, was the leading figure of the English theatre between the death of Garrick and the emergence of Edmund Kean, whose fiery genius threw him into eclipse in his final years. Kemble managed Drury Lane from 1788 to 1802, and Covent Garden from 1803 till he retired in 1817. He often played Macbeth with his sister, Sarah Siddons, as his Lady. Sir Walter Scott was a favourite drinking companion who helped him to write a farewell speech in verse, delivered after his last performance, as Macbeth, in Edinburgh during his final season. Scott’s long review of Boaden’s biography gave him the opportunity to assess the actor’s qualitities with affectionate but judicious nostalgia.
