Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) was one of the most distinguished German scientists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His fame came chiefly from his extensive explorations in South America and his eminence as a plant naturalist. He attempted to climb the inactive volcano Chimborazo in Ecuador, which was thought to be the highest mountain in the world at the time, and he reached an altitude of about 5,543 m, which was a record height for humans. During the climb, he had typical symptoms of acute mountain sickness, which he correctly attributed to the low level of oxygen, and he was

Abstract:
Abstract Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was born into the Prussian nobility, a milieu in which a military career was all but foreordained. But the young Alexander developed an unaccountable and to his family wholly aberrant interest in science. Persisting in the face of stern disapproval, he entered the Mining Academy in Freiburg and returned to Prussia as an Inspector of Mines. He developed modified versions of Humphry Davy’s famous safety lamp and invented a breathing apparatus for miners. At the same time he was summoned to undertake diplomatic missions in an unsettled Europe. He somehow found time to establish his own Free Royal Mining School, where miners were taught about such subjects as geology. But Humboldt had set his heart all along on a life of science and exploration. He became possessed by a consuming fascination with geology, the Earth’s magnetic field and, above all, ‘animal magnetism’, for Galvani’s work on twitching frog muscles [58] had recently appeared. Humboldt developed a theory of his own: the metal electrodes, he decided, were not the cause of the twitches, they merely intensified an innate property of the muscle. He began a series of experiments on animal muscles and plants and then proceeded to test his ideas on himself.

Abstract:
Abstract The introduction features German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859), who visited the circum-Caribbean region for a number of years at the turn of the nineteenth century and wrote about it for the rest of his life. His observations and wide-ranging interests—especially his recognition of the binaries of land and sea, humans and animals, bewitching beauty and nightmarish horrors, exuberance and menace, utopian visions and dystopian realities, health and sickness—prefigure many of the themes of this book. His view of nature, confirmed and elaborated by his tropical sojourn, was that it was a web, in which all elements were connected. It was a living whole, a unified ecosystem, always prone to the dangers of environmental destruction, deforestation, and climatic shocks. The introduction then raises and provisionally answers the four key questions that animate this book: why focus on this part of the world, specifically? Who are the pioneers of Caribbean environmental history? How is the region defined geographically? Finally, what are the important chronological markers? The introduction emphasizes the mixing, movement, and displacement of peoples that led to intense sociocultural interaction and hybridity. The term for this moving and mixing is creole, which designates any person or thing born or created in the Caribbean, with an ancestry external to the region. The rest of the book elaborates on the emergence of this creole ecology resulting from the constant arrival, dispersal, and mingling of peoples, plants, pathogens, and products.

Abstract:
Abstract The starting point of modern botanical systematics, the classification of plants, was 1753, the year in which Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) published his Species Plantarum. There he began the practice of using a binomial system to name species and of placing supposedly related species in groups. Linnaeus knew few palms and included only nine species in his work, one of which was a cycad and none of which were from the New World. He at least recognized, however, that palms formed a natural group, the Palmae. Linnaeus’s son Carl (1741-1783) was the first botanist to use the binomial system to describe an Amazon palm. In 1781, he published Mauritia flexuosa. He was also, unwittingly, the first botanist to emphasize the importance of field work in palm systematics. He did not see Mauritiain the field, and described it as having almost no leaves: “Valde singularis haec arbor fere aphylla” (This tree is alone in being nearly leafless) (Linnaeus, 1781). The first botanists actually to collect Amazon palms, at least those from the northern fringe of the region, were Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and Aime Bonpland (1773-1858).* These celebrated naturalists traveled in the New World between 1799 and 1804. They reached San Carlos de Rio Negro in southern Venezuela and investigated the Rio Casiquiare, which links the Orinoco with the Amazon. Humboldt was greatly impressed by palms. Unlike Linnaeus’s son, he saw Mauritia flexuosagrowing in the wild and wrote of the dependence of Indian tribes on it: “The benefits of It is possible that the first botanist to collect Amazon palms may have been Alexandre Ferreira (1756-1815). He traveled extensively in the Amazon region of Brazil between 1783 and 1792, 10 years before Humboldt and Bonpland (Ferreira, 1972; see also Prance, 1971). To be both patriotic and pedantic, however, I should point out that Sir Walter Ralegh collected a fruit of Mauritia flexuosafrom South America and brought it back to England in 1595 (Humboldt, 1850).
