Aromia moschata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dorcadion equestre (Laxmann, 1770) listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, Stenocorus meridianus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Anisorus quercus (Gotz, 1783) are considered as regionally rare. Calamobius filum (Rossi, 1790) was first identified in the Chernihiv Region (on the northern border of the range). Following species rare in the Chernihiv Region were recorded within the RLP «Nizhynsky»: Carilia virginea (Linnaeus, 1758), Anoplodera sexguttata (Fabricius, 1775), Chlorophorus varius (Müller, 1766), Ch. sartor (Müller, 1766), Mesosa nebulosa (Fabricius, 1781), Oberea oculata (Linnaeus, 1758), Musaria affinis (Harrer, 1784), Calamobius filum (Rossi, 1790), Theophilea cylindricollis Pic, 1895, Agapanthiola leucaspis (Steven, 1817). This list of identified species is not final. Overall, 138 species of longhorn beetles can be given for the Chernigov Region (personal data); thus, the present list, with further targeted studies of the corresponding biocenoses of the territory of the RLP, can by increased two times at least.

Abstract. This paper uses a method of atmospheric flow analogues to reconstruct an ensemble of atmospheric variables (namely sea-level pressure, surface temperature and wind speed) between 1781 and 1785. The properties of this ensemble are investigated and tested against observations of temperature. The goal of the paper is to assess whether the atmospheric circulation during the Laki volcanic eruption (in 1783) and the subsequent winter were similar to the conditions that prevailed in the winter 2009/2010 and during spring 2010. We find that the three months following the Laki eruption in June 1783 barely have analogues in 2010. The cold winter of 1783/1784 yields circulation analogues in 2009/2010. Our analysis suggests that it is unlikely that the Laki eruption was responsible for the cold winter of 1783/1784, of the relatively short memory of the atmospheric circulation.

Abstract:
AbstractThe weather diary of Felipe de Zúñiga y Ontiveros was recorded in Mexico City from 1775 to 1786. It is the earliest meteorological observational record of Mexico. The diary provides daily meteorological information for rain frequency, temperature, frost, hail, thunderstorms, and wind, with higher resolution than any other contemporary documentation or natural proxy from this region. The seasonal distributions of rainy days, temperature, hail, and thunderstorms correspond well with those from the Tacubaya Observatory in Mexico City (1886–2016). Two drought periods (1780/81 and 1785/86) and one wet period (1782/83) were identified. The drought spanning from 1785 to 1786 is known in the literature as “the hunger year” because it represented the most severe famine during the colonial period (1521–1821). This paper analyzes—for the first time—this event at a daily scale. Similar to the reported droughts of 1909/10 and 2010/11, 1785/86 was a very dry period. But the dry conditions of 1785 were followed by intense frosts that started in late August and continued through September and October. This combination led to the destruction of crops and subsequent famine. The duration of the frost does not have analogs during the instrumental period, probably because of the intense warming and land changes registered over the last years in the region.

The death of J.C. Bach on 1 January 1782 coincided with a number of changes in London's concert life. The principal subscription series, the Bach-Abel concerts, had been losing support for a number of years; and though Abel continued with the concerts in 1782, there was scope for a new initiative. Such an initiative was provided by Lord Abingdon with an ambitious reorganization of the concerts in 1783, to be succeeded in 1785 by the musicians’ own undertaking, styled the Professional Concert.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores private and public expectations and perceptions of the West End house in the period c1765 to cl785. By investigating aspects of occupancy or ownership not obviously readable from the house itself, it shows that the town house's significance to its occupants was often far greater and more diverse than its appearance suggests, and it accounts for the terrace house's enduring popularity. Chapter 1 notes the houseowner's absence in the architectural-historical literature on the eighteenth-century town house, and the difficulty of finding or accommodating the house itself within the literature on property ownership, acquisition and transmission. The thesis addresses these deficiencies chiefly through the use of anecdotal, financial and other documentary evidence from papers of families of the landowning classes. Chapter 2 looks at reasons for taking London houses, women's strong associations with them, and houses' practical and more abstract functions, including making a 'proper figure'. Chapter 3 reveals the leasehold house's correspondences with personal rather than real property; the house's prominence in settlements and wills; and its retention within some families, particularly through bequests to widows. Chapter 4 considers what people looked for and how they found it within an active town-house market, and why people were prepared to bear the often damaging cost of house ownership or occupancy. Chapter 5 identifies and explains the discrepancy between public prescriptions and private practice in town-house design. It shows how Robert Adam, in particular, met the terrace house on its own terms and allowed it to come into its own, architecturally, in this period. The house's close associations with women, its ambiguous property status, its commodity attributes, its financial ramifications, and the nature of its architectural and decorative treatments, are used to explain its characterization in the eighteenth century, and more recently, as inconsequential, inconstant, insubstantial, intemperate, and ultimately emasculate.

Abstract:
In prosperous 18th-century britain the right for the individual to leave society for solitude was much debated. Through cross-currents of philanthropy and misanthropy, the response of poetry from 1725 to 1785 was manifold. Not only did the enjoyement of intellectually fruitful solitude develop on physico-theological lines (thomson), but also a growing awareness of the pleasures of melancholy (t. & j. Warton). Searching the limits of solitude through gentle or sublime nature (excursion poets, thomson, cowper), man was soon faced with the infinite (young, hervey), before collapsing beyond a point of no return. Disarray was stressed by religious questioning : was solitude an ordeal toward reunion with fod, or a token of man's alienation from god's grace ? despite the fear of madness and the appeal of suicide, the fall into the abyss of isolation was counterbalanced by a somewhat recevered sense of the self as a reliable centre, beyond loomng nothingness (graveyard school), landscape gardens also sheltered the quest for a decent aurea mediocritas (gray) within the great chain of being the poet could laugh off his fear into; poetry-writing (green), but poetry could also be the work of madness (smart), unless it remained framed by neoclassical poetic diction, turning solitude into a paradoxical tutelary presence

Abstract:
In the eighteenth century, lively exchanges across cultural and language areas developed in the realm of children’s literature, especially in Western Europe. Arnaud Berquin’s famous children’s magazine L’Ami des Enfans (The Children’s Friend, 1782–1783), which was frequently translated, provides a good example, not only due to its history of translation and reception but also because of its history of origins. In this chapter, attention is paid to the texts transferred to it from German sources, especially Joachim Heinrich Campe’s Kleine Kinderbibliothek (Small Library for Children, 1778–1784) and Christian Felix Weiße’s journal Der Kinderfreund (The Children’s Friend, 1775–1782). Fundamental practices of authorship, adaption, and translation in the eighteenth century are discussed on the basis of Berquin’s periodical and his treatment of sources.

Abstract:
The world's first successful public-access steam flour mill was at Chester in 1785, only three years after the Watt rotative engine patent and three years before the famous ‘lap’ engine on show in the Science Museum was built. It was powered by a 14hp Boulton and Watt rotative beam engine. It has been wrongfully universally overshadowed in both steam power and milling history books by the later, larger, Albion Mill in London, which actually started two months later. The Chester mill later expanded into a very large complex of 4-7 storey buildings, which eventually became disused in the 1950s. In 2002 an opportunity for recording and archaeology occurred when the remaining buildings were converted into apartments and the bottom of the original Watt 1785 engine house was uncovered.

Abstract:
Gaps between mating parts of large industrial components are required for assembly and to allow for free thermal or pressure growth. However, the gaps should not be so large as to invalidate linear analysis assumptions for dynamic loadings. Large components may have locations where there are tightly controlled dimensions to accommodate mating parts. At these locations there are specified gaps that are crucial in manufacturing and installing the parts and assemblies. These gaps are strategically determined to provide reasonable assurance that the components can be economically manufactured and assembled without violating structural and functional requirements for the components. In general, large gaps are desirable to facilitate assembly. Small gaps may be necessary to ensure the validity of linear-elastic dynamic analysis and to control leakage. Industry practices for 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch gaps are cited for pipes supported by box frames. The justification for the use of these gap sizes is not readily available in the open literature. This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the effect of gaps on the dynamic analysis of internal components of heavy pressure vessels. Parameteric analytical studies using simple finite element beam models show that loads and stresses increase with gap size. For example, using the results for 1/16-inch gap as the basis, the maximum stresses and loads for a 1/8-inch gap increase by a maximum of approximately 30%.
