Les réseaux des Lumières à Bordeaux: étude de correspondances (1768-1788) est une thèse en un volume -reprographié recto verso- de 686 p. , accompagnée d’un cd-rom portant copie du site internet « Ecrire au XVIIIe siècle ». Il ne s’agit pas seulement d’annexes, mais également d’une base de données relationnelles élaborée pour cette recherche et ouverte aux lecteurs. Thèse d’histoire culturelle qui propose une Etude de correspondances bordelaises pendant les deux dernières décennies de l’Ancien Régime, elle innove en recourant à FileMaker et à l’instrumentation Arcane -qui a en outre permis d’éditer cette thèse- pour travailler de manière approfondie sur le corpus documentaire constitué. Le chapitre II du Livre I occupe donc une place centrale dans cette démonstration. Cette étude a permis de dessiner avec précision des espaces relationnels, d’éclairer les modes de vie et de mettre l’accent sur l’importance des circulations matérielles. La thèse est présentée en quatre temps, exposant tout d’abord le corpus et les outils qui ont permis de le mettre en valeur. Le livre II présente trois épistoliers bordelais observateurs de leur monde et témoins de leur temps : Mme Duplessy, Jean-Baptiste de Secondat, François de Paule Latapie. Le Livre III traite de la sociabilité des Lumières sous sa forme institutionnelle, à partir de l’Académie et du Musée principalement. L’étude des correspondances académiques permet de relier cette partie au projet d’ensemble de la thèse et aux deux livres précédents. Enfin, le livre IV étudie la culture nobiliaire et la culture de la mobilité de ces représentants des élites provinciales. Deux index et une bibliographie complètent cette thèseEnlightenment networks in Bordeaux: study of correspondences (1768-1788) is a thesis in one volume – written back to back - of 686 p, together with a CD-ROM containing the Website “Ecrire au XVIIIe siècle” (“Writing in the XVIIIth century”). This is not a mere annex but rather a relational database created for this research and available to the readers. As a thesis on cultural history offering a Study of correspondences in Bordeaux during the last two decades of the Ancien Régime, it innovates through the use of FileMaker and Arcane software – the latter enabled to edit this thesis – in order to work thoroughly on the documentation corpus constituted. Chapter II of Book I constitutes therefore a key part of this demonstration. This study has enabled to precisely draw relational spaces, to clarify the ways of life and to underline the value of material movements. The thesis is divided in four parts, starting with the presentation of the corpus and tools which enabled to make use of it. Book II presents three letter writers in Bordeaux as observers of their universe and witnesses of their time: Mme Duplessy, Jean-Baptiste de Secondat, François de Paule Latapie. Book III focuses on the Enlightenment sociability with respects to institutions, particularly the Academy and the Museum. The study of academic correspondences enables to link this part to the whole project of the thesis and the two preceding books. Finally, Book IV studies the nobiliary culture and the culture of mobility of these representatives of the provincial elite. Two indexes and a bibliography complement this thesis

Written in memory of the first women convicts transported to Botany Bay, this unthinkable history, a concept posed by the historian, Paul Carter, is an experiment in extending the boundaries of academic remembering, so that the complex lives of those resilient women might be given recognition. Researching the women??s lives required an ethnographic method, or ??spatialized?? history, based on original archival research, together with research of rituals, art, literature, newspapers and music; and, importantly, the laws which circumscribed their behaviour. A research focus was thus the administration of criminal codes and the character of prominent judges, including the significance of the Recorder of London. Theories of history based on the work of philosophers such as Heidegger, Deleuze, Guattari, Derrida, Foucault and the ethical philosopher, Wyschogrod, with her feminist perspective, have influenced narrative themes and tropes. This experimental hybridization of historical methods and the poetics of fiction might be classified as ficto-critical historiography, where ficto-critical functions as an epithet, not a polarity, as is the case with ficto-historiography and the coinage, faction. As a meditation on the ??maybe?? of historiography, the experiment enters the debates about the relationship between history and fiction and the significance of remembering. The incompleteness of records, their silences and partialities, the forensic reading required to contextualize them, the perspective from which the narrative is told, together with the metaphorical levels of all writing, are explicitly acknowledged. Fundamental to that acknowledgement is the narrative trope of simulacra. The narrative figures are thus copies without originals; they are an acknowledgement of the absence which haunts memories, while avoiding scepticism or relativity. The semi-omniscient, intrusive voice of the narrator, the dialogic placement of other ??voices??, variously contrary, affirmative, informative or philosophical; together with the acknowledged artifice of narrative dramatizations in which the figures are assembled from multiple sources, are important elements in the grammar of this transgressive act of remembering with its footnotes and phantoms.

In early Philadelphia, 1783-1788, the classics formed a pervasive presence on the city's cultural, political, and physical landscape. As the American nation commenced its republican experiment, references to the classics in Philadelphia especially emerged as a vehicle and vocabulary employed by statesmen for fashioning a people, political culture, and national identity. According to political theories of republicanism, statesmen in Philadelphia had a vested interest in cultivating the virtue of their citizens. As symbols and lessons in patriotism and virtue, classical antiquity was incorporated into civic iconography and national foundation narratives and projected to the broader public.
This thesis examines the classical presence in Philadelphia, 1783-1788. It specifically analyses the public presentation and dissemination of the classics in three cultural avenues beyond the walls of the academy, newspapers, spectacles, and orations, in order to evaluate the barriers and opportunities for engagement with the classics by the broader Philadelphia public. I argue that although the gates to a traditional higher education were shut to many of the Philadelphia public, cultural avenues existed that allowed the classics to disseminate to the wider populace. The broader public was invited to engage with the classics when it served a political purpose and lessons in patriotism and virtue were being transmitted. However, this inclusion was often controlled, mediated, and implemented on the terms of the elite. Further, the classics still served as markers of status, and the two contradictory functions held by the classics placed the wider Philadelphia public on the threshold of inclusion and exclusion.Master of Arts

The large amounts of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data now being generated demand automatic tools for image interpretation. Where available, map data provides a valuable aid for visual interpretation and it should aid automatic interpretation. Automatic map based interpretation will be heavily dependent on methods for matching image and map features, both for defining the initial registration and for comparing image and map. This thesis investigates methods for carrying out this matching. Before beginning to develop image map matching methods, a full understanding of the nature of SAR data is first required. The general theory of SAR imaging, the effects of speckle and texture on image statistics, multi-look image statistics, and parameter estimation, are all discussed before addressing the main subject matter. Initially the feasibility of directly matching map features to SAR image features is investigated. Simulations based on a simple image model produce promising results. However, the results of matching features in real images are disappointing. This is due to the limitations of the image model on which matching is based. Possible extensions to include texture and correlation are considered to be computationally too expensive. Rather, it is concluded that pre-processing is needed to structure the image prior to matching. Structuring using edge detection and segmentation are investigated. Among operators for detecting edges in SAR an operator based on intensity ratios is identified as the most suitable. Its performance is fully analysed. Segmentation using an iterative edge detection/segment growing algorithm developed at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment is investigated and various improvements are suggested. The output of segmentation is structured to a higher level than the output of edge detection. Thus the former is the more suitable candidate for map matching. Approaches to matching segmentations to map data are discussed.

This thesis brings together a number of studies using high frequency foreign exchange (FX) data. The first part examines the effects of scheduled, publicly released macroeconomic news, while the final chapter considers another, related, aspect of FX microstructure. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the thesis and reviews the literature in high frequency empirical FX research. In Chapter 2, I use up to ten months of FX transactions and quote data to analyse foreign exchange activity around times of scheduled news releases. The effects of news on exchange rate levels are examined, as well as the effects on spreads, trading volume and volatihty. Chapter 3 extends this analysis, asking how public information enters prices. Under rational expectations and efficient markets hypotheses, the news contained in public information announcements should be impounded directly, with there being no role for trades in this process of information assimilation. However, the results suggest that up to two thirds of the price relevant information enters via trading (order flow in particular). Chapter 4 provides an explanation why order flow is so important around public news releases and also examines the effects of news on market depths. In Chapter 5 I examine how much information is carried in trades by looking at the price impact of order flow when feedback trading is allowed. The model that is often used in the literature is proved to be misspecified when temporally aggregated data are employed and Chapter 5 introduces a method to estimate the otherwise unidentified model. Using impulse response functions, I show that trades actually carry more information than previous estimates suggest.

E’ proprio per via delle innumerevoli differenze che ci sono tra l’Occidente e l’India, siano esse culturali, religiose, storiche e conseguentemente architettoniche, che chiunque visiti questo particolare Stato del mondo, viene sopraffatto dalla sua incredibile complessità culturale.
“Punto di incontro ed origine dei più diversi popoli e delle più diverse culture, l’India si riallaccia a tradizioni millenarie.
L’India riesce ad accogliere gli influssi stranieri esercitati nel tempo trasfigurandoli, senza tuttavia intaccare la propria identità culturale. L’India seduce il visitatore occidentale per la coesistenza di diversi popoli, lingue e religioni.” [8]
Dall’analisi del sito sono stati individuate una serie di problematiche e criticità la cui risoluzione,conseguentemente allo studio delle architetture d’acqua indiane e dagli elementi caratteristici dell’architettura di Varanasi, sarà punto di partenza in fase progettuale.
Insieme al ripristino funzionale dell'area saranno progettati un ostello per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini, una scuola d’artigianato e due blocchi abitativi di differente tipologia.

The last four years have been intense. The discoveries in the studio, the struggles with my readings and writings, having my work discussed and criticized, the close contact with other artists, scholars, curators and museums, combined with my travels abroad and the experience of living in a metropolis like London, enlightened my practice, enabling me to see from where my work came and find some of the questions it poses. Researching art history proved to be helpful in establishing the context where Installation Art emerged and developed. Claire Bishop’s critical writings provided me with the theory to understand the installation approach to the viewer, and Michael Fried’s criticism of ephemeral works of art and his claims for the autonomy of the art object, established the starting point of my research. My explorations into sculpture brought studio-life at the centre of my creative process and allowed me to look at installation with fresh eyes, reaffirming its importance within my practice and giving me the objectivity necessary to be critical as well. Thinking in terms of ‘making’ increased my awareness of the connections of my work and material culture and brought to the surface the role that audience and objects play in my work. The variety of media I explored and my interest in addressing art institutions and art history made it clear that I am not interested in formal experiments but in working from within the system of values, ideas and practices that form the whole of our culture, visually and theoretically, high and low. This report is organized in seven sections plus references and three appendices. The first section is a brief account of my educational and creative background followed by a shortened version of the proposal I submitted at the end of the first year. The next four sections constitute the main part of my investigation, reflecting the development of theory and practice during the doctorate. The last section is a general conclusion about the whole process. The style of writing reflects the subjective process of describing and analyzing my path throughout the art doctorate. The text is a collage of data, personal thoughts, quotes, aphorisms, diagrams, remarks, doubts and opinions; a bricolage that mirrored my creative process. I owe a lot to my doctorate colleagues and tutors, who helped to push my art further and strengthen me as an artist. I am especially grateful to Alison Winkle, Eemyun Kang, Geoffrey Brunell, Hideyuki Sawayanagi, Karen Raney, Mark Sowden, Sharone Lifschitz, Tim Weston and Tetriana Ahmed Fauzi. La definition du "genome comme logos " est discutee. This explains why no definitive study has been produced, in this field, until recently. This work discusses the genome as logos. It examines the possibility of a physical definition of a human beeing by using the genome and neuronal activity. It offers a critical study based on the contemporary philosophy of mind and on the analysis of descartes's views by merleau-ponty. This work posits that the use of physical traits and generational characteristics to" identify an individual or a group is arbitrary. Теза је у ускостручном смислу везана за научну област османистике. Смедеревски санџак 1739-1788. као појам до сада није био у употреби у назначеном хронолошком периоду, што представља иновативно решење. Пошавши од проблема имена и територије задатак тезе је био преиспитивање постојећих научних метанаратива и дефинисање административних оквира. Са становишта теоријско-методолошког приступа дефинисане су структуре, које су касније подвргнуте процесу деконструкције, односно праћене су промене, настале у географско-хронолошком контексту. Османска администрација, како упућује архивска грађа, формирала је мрежу формалних и неформалних односа са периферијом у циљу њене ефикасније контроле. Тиме је постојећем класичном систему, који је постајао све нефункционалнији парирао читав систем нових, формалних и неформалних институција комуникације, што је отежавало истраживања, нарочито са становишта кредибилитета историјских извора.Дефтеролошким проучавањима, непобитно су утврђени коначни административни оквири и дефинисан правни систем Смедеревског санџака у посматраном хронолошком периоду. Посебно су испитани проблеми територијалне распрострањености каза и нахија и сугерисана њихова подударност. Испитан је значај и улога читавог низа институција, од којих се издваја положај београдског мухафиза. Побијена јетеза о посебној улози Смедеревског санџака у реформском процесу унутар Османског царства, чиме је провинција посмарана у складу са основним токовима османског транзиционог доба. За разлику од самог Санџака, дефинисана је територијална надлежност београдског мухафиза, која надилази структуру османске провинције и која је у складу са принципима функционисања Дунавском одбрамбеног бедема. Одбијена је теза старије историографије о положају серхата, који је посматран као конструкт преузет из раног класичног периода.Војно уређење је посматрано као ефективно, организовано око јерлијских формација под контролом мухафиза и нефункционално, у виду формација спахија и јаничара. Све структуре присутне у изворима адекватно су заступљене и у самој тези, без обзира на степен кредибилности. Због тога је у оквиру сегмента о политичким иницијативама анализирана реална улога различитих политичких актера, пре свега на основу њихових формализованих улога, за које је утврђено да нису имале значајну улогу. Институција апелације централној власти служила је као вид репрезентације протополитичких групација са локала, незадовољних тренутним статусом у владајућем поретку. Запажени су значајно већи модалитети неформалних односа на локалу, концентрисани око власти самог мухафиза или око његових противника. Делокруг власти мухафиза-везира је повећаван, што је у складу са поретком децентрализације Царства али је његов реалан утицај на локалу слабио због паралелизма институција. На нивоу нахија и паланки, представници мухафиза – муселими/мутеселими, нису могли ефикасно да контролишу новчане токове, везане за порески систем.Смедеревски санџак, као османска провинција показује све главне тенденције процеса који су присутни у остатку Османског царства, са додуше нешто јачим присуством војног фактора, због спољне границе Царства.Teza je u uskostručnom smislu vezana za naučnu oblast osmanistike. Smederevski sandžak 1739-1788. kao pojam do sada nije bio u upotrebi u naznačenom hronološkom periodu, što predstavlja inovativno rešenje. Pošavši od problema imena i teritorije zadatak teze je bio preispitivanje postojećih naučnih metanarativa i definisanje administrativnih okvira. Sa stanovišta teorijsko-metodološkog pristupa definisane su strukture, koje su kasnije podvrgnute procesu dekonstrukcije, odnosno praćene su promene, nastale u geografsko-hronološkom kontekstu. Osmanska administracija, kako upućuje arhivska građa, formirala je mrežu formalnih i neformalnih odnosa sa periferijom u cilju njene efikasnije kontrole. Time je postojećem klasičnom sistemu, koji je postajao sve nefunkcionalniji parirao čitav sistem novih, formalnih i neformalnih institucija komunikacije, što je otežavalo istraživanja, naročito sa stanovišta kredibiliteta istorijskih izvora.Defterološkim proučavanjima, nepobitno su utvrđeni konačni administrativni okviri i definisan pravni sistem Smederevskog sandžaka u posmatranom hronološkom periodu. Posebno su ispitani problemi teritorijalne rasprostranjenosti kaza i nahija i sugerisana njihova podudarnost. Ispitan je značaj i uloga čitavog niza institucija, od kojih se izdvaja položaj beogradskog muhafiza. Pobijena jeteza o posebnoj ulozi Smederevskog sandžaka u reformskom procesu unutar Osmanskog carstva, čime je provincija posmarana u skladu sa osnovnim tokovima osmanskog tranzicionog doba. Za razliku od samog Sandžaka, definisana je teritorijalna nadležnost beogradskog muhafiza, koja nadilazi strukturu osmanske provincije i koja je u skladu sa principima funkcionisanja Dunavskom odbrambenog bedema. Odbijena je teza starije istoriografije o položaju serhata, koji je posmatran kao konstrukt preuzet iz ranog klasičnog perioda.Vojno uređenje je posmatrano kao efektivno, organizovano oko jerlijskih formacija pod kontrolom muhafiza i nefunkcionalno, u vidu formacija spahija i janičara. Sve strukture prisutne u izvorima adekvatno su zastupljene i u samoj tezi, bez obzira na stepen kredibilnosti. Zbog toga je u okviru segmenta o političkim inicijativama analizirana realna uloga različitih političkih aktera, pre svega na osnovu njihovih formalizovanih uloga, za koje je utvrđeno da nisu imale značajnu ulogu. Institucija apelacije centralnoj vlasti služila je kao vid reprezentacije protopolitičkih grupacija sa lokala, nezadovoljnih trenutnim statusom u vladajućem poretku. Zapaženi su značajno veći modaliteti neformalnih odnosa na lokalu, koncentrisani oko vlasti samog muhafiza ili oko njegovih protivnika. Delokrug vlasti muhafiza-vezira je povećavan, što je u skladu sa poretkom decentralizacije Carstva ali je njegov realan uticaj na lokalu slabio zbog paralelizma institucija. Na nivou nahija i palanki, predstavnici muhafiza – muselimi/muteselimi, nisu mogli efikasno da kontrolišu novčane tokove, vezane za poreski sistem.Smederevski sandžak, kao osmanska provincija pokazuje sve glavne tendencije procesa koji su prisutni u ostatku Osmanskog carstva, sa doduše nešto jačim prisustvom vojnog faktora, zbog spoljne granice Carstva.

Great Britain’s passage of the Transportation Act of 1718 was intended to relieve Great Britain of an unwanted criminal element while at the same time providing much needed labor for her North American colonies. This thesis argues that the legislative body of Virginia initially responded by passing legislation intended to limit the dangers presented by the introduction of convict servants into the colony. However, the significant demand for labor in Virginia resulted in the colony receiving a substantial share of those convicts transported to North America. Contemporaries argued that the importation of convict servants led to an increase in crime. This study employs the court records of eighteen counties in Colonial Virginia. The author contends that the evidence reveals that theft was the most common criminal activity of convict servants in Virginia. However, despite claims to the contrary, convict servants did not commit crimes in excess of their percentage of the tithable population. Moreover, over the course of the eighteenth-century justices county justices increasingly relied on providing lighter sentences than that prescribed by the law. This enabled planters to punish the criminal while maintaining control over their labor. The last chapter moves away from the legal system of Virginia and examines the opportunities the American Revolution provided to convict servants.

El objetivo de esta tesis es construir un modelo cuántico para las ondas gravitatorias planas, unas soluciones de vacío de las ecuaciones de Einstein que presentan simetrías análogas a las ondas electromagnéticas en un espacio-tiempo plano. Vamos a cuantizar un modelo de midisuperespacio para las ondas gravitatorias planas puras.Desde un punto de vista físico este tipo de soluciones son interesantes porque describen radiación gravitatoria a nivel no perturbativo, son soluciones exactas que representan campos gravitatorios intensos. Se cree que proporcionan una buena descripción del espacio-tiempo para regiones suficientemente alejadas de una fuente de radiación finita. Además tienen otras propiedades geométricas interesantes, por ejemplo la focalización de las geodésicas, en particular de los conos de luz. En el caso de estudiar colisiones de ondas estos fenómenos de focalización pueden dar lugar a que se formen singularidades de curvatura. Estas propiedades reflejan la naturaleza no lineal de la interacción gravitatoria.
Partiendo de un modelo de midisuperespacio para los espacio-tiempos con dos vectores de Killing espaciales que conmutan (las ondas planas son un caso particular), introducimos una fijación parcial del gauge válida para esta clase de espacio-tiempos que elimina los difeomorfismos relacionados con las coordenadas asociadas a los Killing. A continuación añadidos más condiciones para fijar completamente la libertad gauge y exigir que las soluciones sean las ondas planas. Hemos obtenido un modelo reducido sin ligaduras donde los grados de libertad físicos se corresponden a dos campos. Obtenemos el espacio de fases reducido de nuestro modelo y también la forma simpléctica y el hamiltoniano reducidos.
Después de haber completado el análisis clásico del modelo estudiamos la cuantización para el caso de las ondas linealmente polarizadas, en primer lugar consideramos un caso sencillo, las soluciones de tipo onda sandwich, y después tratando el caso general. Definiremos unos operadores regularizados para la métrica y obtendremos el espacio de Hilbert de estados. En definitiva, contruiremos una teoría cuántica consistente para el modelo de midisuperespacio considerado.
Finalmente extraemos las conclusiones físicas que se derivan del modelo cuántico que hemos construido. Estudiamos las fluctuaciones de la métrica, la existencia de estados clásicos y la validez de la aproximación semiclásica, en particular para estados coherentes. Los resultados indican que el valor esperado de los operadores de la métrica coincide con los resultados clásicos. A pesar de ello, las fluctuaciones de la métrica se disparan en la región donde las ondas planas focalizan las geodésicas nulas. Las geometrías cuánticas descritas por estos estados no admiten una descripción clásica en esa región. Es importante notar que estos resultados se aplican igualmente para el vacío, que describe el espacio-tiempo plano y que también es un estado coherente. Esto plantea serias dudas sobre la validez de la aproximación semiclásica, no es razonable estudiar la cuantización de campos materiales sobre un background clásico cuando hemos visto que en este modelo hasta el espacio-tiempo plano tiene fluctuaciones cuánticas considerables.

Par Pond is a man-made 1120 ha cooling reservoir located on the Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. From 1972-1978 a detailed study on the status of the alligator in Par Pond was conducted by Tom Murphy (unpub. MS thesis Univ. of GA, 1977). Murphy estimated that approximately 110 alligators inhabited Par Pond with an adult (> 1.8 m) to juvenile (< 1.8 m) ratio of (1.8:1), an overall sex ratio of 3.2:1, and an average of only 2.3 nests/yr. The purpose of this study (1986-1989) was to determine the current population size and structure, determine how the population has changed in the last 15 years and to examine growth and survival of juvenile alligators.
Data were collected by monthly night-time eyeshine counts aerial surveys, capturing animals, and locating and following the fate of nests. There was a strong positive correlation between water temperature and the number of alligators observed during eyeshine counts. Both eyeshine counts and aerial surveys were highest in spring and varied seasonally.
A total of 184 different non-hatchling and 157 hatchling alligators were captured between May 1986 and November 1988. Population estimates and size distributions based on capture data indicate that over the last 15 years the population has increased from approximately 110 to 200 alligators, and the size distribution has shifted from one dominated by large adults to one that has a higher proportion of juveniles. The current sex ratio (2.6:1) is not significantly different from that reported by Murphy (1977, 3.2:1). However, the average number of nests/yr has increased from 2.3 to 4.0.
Data on juvenile growth and survival show that the growth rate of hatchlings (32.9 cm/yr total length) is greater than that of animals age 1-3 (21.6 cm/yr total length) and survival of all ages is variable between years and between clutches.
Results from this study indicate that from 1972-988 the population has increased ac an average exponential rate of 6 % per year. If conditions in Par Pond do not change, the population size should continue to increase.

Using the history behind domestic violence, the psychology behind male batterers and batterer intervention programs we discover solutions to help reduce battery recidivism rates. An analysis of the criminal justice system regarding police intervention and Family Court result in future policy implications. In addition, the proposed solutions are creating lasting impact in either batterer intervention programs or policies. Lastly, policy and future implications are discussed without reducing batterer responsibility.

This thesis presents three essays on Malaysia’s poverty profile based on the Household Expenditure Survey (HES). The first and second studies were motivated by the shortcomings of the official poverty lines and poverty measurements. There are several conceptual and measurement problems related to evaluating the extent of poverty in Malaysia. The first study offers several alternative regional poverty analyses based on the consumption expenditure approach with varying underlying assumptions. The poverty lines are estimated using Ravallion-Bidani and Kakwani-Sajaia approaches and the consumption pattern of the 10th and 20th percentile per capita expenditure (PCE) households. Regional poverty lines based on Kakwani-Sajaia and Ravallion-Bidani lower bounds produced robust poverty measurement rankings across regions in the country for both the 10th and 20th percentile PCE households. However, for the 10th percentile PCE, Ravallion’s upper bound poverty lines do not produce robust poverty rankings. In relation to the shortcomings of the official poverty measurements, the second study analyses the economies of scale in consumption, specifically amongst poor households. Using the 10th and 20th percentile PCE households, the household size economies are estimated using specifications proposed by Deaton-Paxson and Kakwani-Son. The findings show that the economies of scale indices are sensitive to the selection of methods and sample groups. Economies of scale in poor household consumption are present for food, housing, clothing, furnishing, personal goods and miscellaneous goods. This study further suggests that these indices be used as complementary to the existing national poverty measurements. The final study provides new insights into the limited urban poverty studies and to the new dimension of urban poverty. Using logistic regression, the determinants are analysed using the new poverty lines estimated in the earlier essay. The test of robustness of the determinants is conducted through re-estimating the logistic regression using a range of poverty lines. The findings show that education, locational dimension, foreign migrant workers and household size are significant determinants of poverty in the urban areas.

Biodiesel is primarily produced by transesterification of edible oils. Increasing concern about using food supplies for fuel has generated interest in alternative raw materials. Furthermore, there are numerous steps between harvesting of oilseeds and final production of biodiesel that can be integrated, thereby simplifying the process and making it more suitable for distributed production. Hence, in this study, the production of biodiesel via in situ transesterification of non-edible Jatropha curcas seed has been investigated. The main aim was to investigate the parameters of the process, with a view to reducing the substantial excess of methanol required. A significant secondary aim was to investigate the possibility of utilising other compounds that come out from the process. “Design of experiments” was employed to study the parameters at lab-scale, with the matrix boundary being determined beforehand using one-at-a-time experiments. The reduction of methanol excess was attempted by use of two co-solvents, hexane and diethylmethane (DEM), and by replacing methanol with methyl acetate. It was found that in situ transesterification run using particle sizes below 0.71 mm, a 400:1 molar ratio of methanol to oil, 60 minutes, and a minimum of 300 rpm mixing intensity yielded the highest biodiesel yield of 83 wt %. NaOH concentration and reaction temperature were not found to be significant variables, and were set at 1.0 N and 30oC respectively. DEM was a more effective co-solvent than hexane. The addition of DEM to the process at 400:1 molar ratio experiment increased the yield from 83 to 92 wt %. When methyl acetate was used to replace methanol, the requirement of molar ratio of solvent:oil reduced significantly to 175:1 to achieved 86.8 wt% of biodiesel. The solid meal was shown to contain substantial amounts of protein, making it a valuable co-product stream. Previously J. curcas meal had had little value as animal feed due to its toxicity, but this may be reduced or removed by this process.

The research is divided into 2 parts, the first involving the syntheses of a new ligand for use in a metallocene catalyst system. The second part involved the synthesis of new monomers for the use in free radical polymerization systems, In the first part of the research, the synthesis of the ligand, 2-dimethyladamantylethylcyclopentadiene was attempted. This was done via the starting materials adamantylethylbromide and dimethylfulvene. In the first step the adamantylethylbromide was prepared via the tosylation reaction of admantaneethanol. Further, the use of either a Grignard or Barbier reaction to insert the 6,6 dimethylfulvene to yield the final product was attempted. The isolation of the final product could not successfully be completed, even though spectroscopic evidence suggested that the synthesis had been partially succssful. In the second part of the reasearch, the monomers 4-(1-adamantyl)phenolmethacrylate, adamantylmethylacrylate and admantylethylacrylate were synthesized. These monomers were homo-and copolymerized using a controlled radical reaction mechanism (RAFT).

This paper analyzes the assassination of Lord Moyne, the British Resident Minister of the Middle East, in 1944 by the extremist Jewish group Lehi and the effect the incident has carried throughout the last sixty eight years in both Britain and Israel. The weight of the memory of the assassination as well as how terrorism is defined becomes poignant with the 1975 peace agreement between Egypt and Israel following the Yom Kippur War. With an eye to how Israel has continued to make the assassination part of its national identity and Britain’s reaction in 2012 with the death of Yitzhak Shamir. Through the lens of this assassination the use of memory and the definition of terrorism have continued to be reinterpreted by both the governments of Britain and Israel.

igualdade e da solidariedade. Incluir uma qualquer criança na escola, significa perfilá-la, para
assim desencadear uma verdadeira rede de estruturas internas e externas à Escola, que
articuladas entre si e respeitando as especificidades de cada indivíduo, tem a responsabilidade
de formar e educar, perspectivando uma inclusão mais alargada: a inclusão social.
A presente dissertação circunscreve-se à problemática da inclusão de crianças com
Necessidades Educativas Especiais (NEE) de carácter permanente, em contexto pedagógico,
com especial incidência, na intervenção educativa destes alunos, cujos comprometimentos
situam-se na tipologia da comunicação e linguagem.
A Classificação Internacional da Funcionalidade (CIF), como instrumento comum,
utilizado pelas várias áreas sociais, assume um papel preponderante, na despistagem e
identificação de factores que determinam a funcionalidade do indivíduo, preconizando um
modelo biopsicossocial, que inclui a participação de todos, na individualização das
características elementares do ser humano, em detrimento de estereótipos sociais e de esferas
de referência.
A investigação aqui apresentada tem a configuração de um estudo de caso único, onde
se ilustram traços de união entre teoria e prática. Esta metodologia, assente no papel do
professor enquanto investigador em acção, permitiu explanar a intervenção educativa com um
aluno portador de comprometimentos ao nível da comunicação e linguagem, com base nos
pressupostos da CIF e da legislação em vigor, visando o diagnóstico, avaliação e definição de
um plano de intervenção pedagógico e didáctico multidisciplinar.
Este estudo aparece sustentando por um enquadramento teórico bastante vasto que
alude desde o conceito de NEE, passando pela CIF, aspectos específicos da linguagem e suas
perturbações, conceito de comunicação, sistemas aumentativos e alternativos de comunicação
até ao conceito de avaliação quer em sentido lato, quer no âmbito da intervenção em
Educação Especial.Actualmente, la promoción de una escuela inclusiva, va más allá de los principios de igualdad y solidaridad. Incluya cualquier niño, mediante su perfil, con el fin de desencadenar una red de estructuras dentro y fuera de la escuela, que se articula con los demás y respetando las especificidades de cada persona, tiene la responsabilidad de formar y educar, con la perspectiva de una inclusión más amplia: la inclusión social. Esta tesis se limita a la cuestión de la inclusión de los niños con necesidades educativas especiales (NEE) de carácter permanente en el contexto educativo, haciendo especial hincapié en la intervención educativa a estos estudiantes, cuyos compromisos se encuentran en materia de comunicación y lenguaje. La Clasificación Internacional del Funcionamiento (CIF) como una herramienta común, utilizado por varios sectores sociales, desempeña un papel importante en la detección e identificación de los factores que determinan la funcionalidad de la persona, aboga por un modelo biopsicosocial, que incluye la participación de todos en individualización de las características básicas de los seres humanos en lugar de los estereotipos sociales y de esferas de referencia. In these times, promoting an inclusive school goes forward the principles of equality and solidarity. Including each child in the school means getting her or his profile so that we can manage a real net of internal and external structures that are articulated and that respect the individual characteristics. These structures have the responsibility of educating and forming for the social inclusion. The current research is confined to the problematic of children with permanent special educational needs included in pedagogical context , especially the educative intervention in the students that have got some communicative and language problems. The International Functionality Classification (IFC), as a common tool, used by the different social areas, assumes an important role in the detection and identification of factors that determine the functionality of the individual through a biopsychosocial model, that includes the participation of all, in the individualization of the elementary characteristics of the human being in detriment of social stereotypes and reference spheres. The research, here presented, has the design of a single case, where some traces of union between theory and practice are illustrated. This methodology, focused on the teacher as a researcher of her own action, allowed to study the educative intervention with a student who has got some communicative and language problems. With the help of the principles conveyed in the International Functionality Classification and in the legislation on that matter, this study aims at diagnosis, evaluation and definition of a multi-discipline, didactic and pedagogical plan. This study appears sustained by a vast literature which includes many concepts as: Special Educational Needs, International Functionality Classification, specific features of language and its disturbances, communication, augmentative and alternative systems of communication and evaluation in general terms and mainly in the Special Education.

Pretende-se com o presente estudo aprofundar o conhecimento e apurar a sensibilidade
necessária para lidar mais eficientemente com problemas reais, nomeadamente nas áreas
de Extrusão e da Injecção.
Para tal, simula-se numericamente o escoamento de fluidos incompressíveis, em estado
estacionário no interior de um canal onde existem obstáculos cilíndricos à passagem do
fluido.
A análise é efectuada em três sistemas com configurações distintas, reduzidos, por
considerações geométricas, a problemas bidimensionais e usando três fluidos distintos.
Juntamente com as equações de Navier-Stokes utilizam-se duas leis materiais distintas
para descrever o comportamento material do fluido: a lei de potência e o modelo de
Maxwell (UCM).
Para executar as simulações recorre-se ao programa de dinâmica de fluidos Polyflow
- ferramenta computacional que discretiza as equações de Navier-Stokes pelo método de
elementos finitos.
Simulam-se situações de Extrusão em cada um dos três sistemas e de Injecção no sistema
com estrangulamentos mais acentuados.
Na situação de Extrusão, simulada para os dois fluidos viscosos o efeito da dissipação
viscosa na temperatura do fluido é significativo. Para o fluido viscoelástico concluiu-se
que os resultados obtidos são análogos ao do fluido Newtoniano.
Na situação de Injecção, simulada com o fluido reofluidificante, não foram obtidos
resultados com significado físico.
No decurso das simulações ocorreram problemas de convergência relacionados com o
parâmetro n da lei de potência, energia de activação e condutividade térmica do fluido.
O problema é ultrapassado, no primeiro caso recorrendo ao método de Picard, e através
de um processo evolutivo nos restantes casos.

En el Instituto Especializado Materno Perinatal entre el 01 de febrero y el 30 de noviembre del 2002 a las gestantes que acudieron al control prenatal entre las 14 y 42 semanas de gestación se les ofreció la evaluación ecográfica con velocimetría Doppler de las arterias uterinas para realizar un estudio prospectivo descriptivo para determinar los valores normales de flujometría Doppler de las arterias uterinas entre las 11 - 42 semanas en gestantes de bajo riesgo obstétrico. Se determinó el índice de resistencia (IR) de ambas arterias, la reproducción de las mediciones y las variaciones intra e interobservador. 178 gestantes cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. La velocimetría Doppler de las arterias uterinas se realizó entre las 14 y 39 semanas de gestación. No hubo gestantes entre las 40 y 42 semanas. La onda de la arteria uterina izquierda se obtuvo en todas las pacientes pero la onda de la arteria uterina derecha solo en 163 (91,6%) gestantes. El IR media de la arteria uterina izquierda y derecha fue 0,58 y 0,55; respectivamente. El índice de resistencia de la arteria uterina derecha fue menor que el de la izquierda desde las 12 semanas de gestación. En el 95% de ocasiones, las variaciones intra e interobservador fueron menores de 0,12 y 0,15; respectivamente.
Concluimos que el índice de resistencia de la arteria uterina derecha es menor que el de la arteria uterina izquierda, la medición del IR es altamente reproducible y las mediciones intra e interobservador del IR no difieren significativamente.Tesis de segunda especialidad

Previous issue date: 2012The present work aims to conform the Brazilian criminal law, especially the offenses against the honor, to a contemporary understanding of freedom of expression. First of all, it was established how serious is the threat posed by these laws to this fundamental freedom, conclusion which inspired its study in the American constitutional system, where the First Amendment has a large "breathing space". Still, by analyzing the First Amendment doctrines, the study of criminal defamation, particularly at state level, and by understanding the actual malice standard, it was discovered that the truth and the right to critique are protected by freedom of expression and awarded by the exchange of ideas in a democracy. Finally, it was found that truth and justification form the core of this fundamental right in Brazil on grounds similar to American law, ensuring the debate in society, protecting it from possible criminal actions filed by public officials, public figures or even individuals involved in matters of public interest which have as their goal to deter criticism and censor the truth.
O presente trabalho visa a readequar o direito penal brasileiro, principalmente os crimes contra a honra, a uma compreensão contemporânea de liberdade de expressão. Primeiramente, foi constatada a seriedade da ameaça que essas normas representam contra tal liberdade fundamental, conclusão que inspirou seu estudo no sistema constitucional americano, onde a Primeira Emenda possui um amplo espaço de respiro. Ainda, através da análise de doutrinas da Primeira Emenda, do estudo da criminal defamation, notadamente em âmbito estadual, e da compreensão do standard actual malice, descobriu-se que a verdade e o direito à crítica são elementos protegidos pela liberdade de expressão e resguardados pelo intercâmbio de ideias, em uma democracia. Por fim, verificou-se que a verdade e a justificação compõem o núcleo essencial desse direito fundamental no Brasil com fundamentos semelhantes aos do direito americano, para assegurar o debate em sociedade, resguardando-o de eventuais ações criminais ajuizadas por funcionários públicos, figuras públicas, ou mesmo particulares envolvidos em assuntos de interesse público que tenham por objeto coibir a crítica e censurar a verdade.

2014The world’s population continues to grow, while job creation opportunities shrink, particularly among young people. Youth unemployment is among key global challenges that may continue to persist for many years. Recently, the unemployment rate among youth in South Africa was estimated at 70 percent. This could mean that thousands and thousands of young people are living under poverty conditions in this country, which may result in a generation of poverty if this position remains unobserved. Interestingly, entrepreneurship has been adopted world over as a strategic approach to facilitate economic participation among youth. Their engagement in entrepreneurship helps them to achieve economic independence, increase their self-esteem, improve their standards of living, to reduce their dependence on state welfare and improve their emotional intelligence. At the same time, job creation opportunities and a decline in criminal activities as a result of unemployment, will ensure development of economic growth. Despite the above mentioned entrepreneurship benefits, youth in Khayelitsha, where this study is based, may be reluctant in pursuing careers in entrepreneurship, owing to inadequate entrepreneurship development services among them, which appear to the case. The objectives of this study were to find out specific factors that discourage the youth from pursuing entrepreneurship careers, to investigate particular challenges that inhibit expansion of their entrepreneurial ventures, and to describe specific prospects of youth entrepreneurship development in Khayelitsha. The current study adopted a descriptive research design. A quantitative empirical research approach was employed with the help of self-administered questionnaires. A sample of 132 subjects was randomly drawn from a population of 200 youth entrepreneurs who operate and are formally registered as SMMEs within various industries that are registered on the database of a local organisation known as Khayelitsha Youth In Business (KYIB), which promotes and develops entrepreneurship among youth in Khayelitsha. The data that was collected from participants of the current study was captured and analysed with the help of a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, based on 77 questionnaires that were returned. The findings were illustrated in tables, bars and pie charts, and the objectives of the study were achieved. It was found that it was not the case that young people in Khayelitsha do not want to pursue careers in entrepreneurship, but rather it was that youth entrepreneurship development is lacking in this community. The current study also revealed that a major factor that inhibits youth entrepreneurship development was the lack of awareness and inaccessibility of entrepreneurship support structures and initiatives in this community. Interestingly though, this hindrance does not appear to have a negative bearing on the identified growing enthusiasm of youth to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Overall, on the basis of the challenges and prospects revealed, recommendations to improve the current situation were made. This study is an applied research effort and its relevance is linked to the fact that it provides a rare insight into the state of youth entrepreneurship in a large but under-researched township community in the Western Cape. The findings and recommendations therefore bear far-reaching ramifications for all stakeholders who are concerned about developing youth entrepreneurship in this society.

A discussão se faz através dos seguintes eixos: o doente renal crônico, as dificuldades no seu manejo quanto ao tratamento curativo/reabilitador, a construção da consciência sanitária, bem como a aproximação da teoria da Reforma Sanitária brasileira à prática do Sistema Único de Saúde. Abordou-se a excelência do método clínico, para este grupo populacional específico, como uma das formas de contribuição para a implementação e implantação do S.U.S. democrático oriundo da Reforma Sanitária brasileira. Conclui-se que para o conceito ampliado de cura e formação da consciência sanitária é preciso trabalhar com o paciente sujeito, enquanto doente renal crônico, assumindo que esta é a identidade social do paciente, o que lhe confere o status de grupo populacional específico. O auto-cuidado e o tratamento odontológico adquirem sentido quando vinculados à doença renal crônica e, em especial, ao transplante renal. Trabalhar de forma resolutiva foi uma condição "sine qua non", sendo que a resolutividade, inclusive com reabilitação protética, foi uma mediação para o auto-cuidado. Sugere-se trabalhar com a otimização dos tempos clínicos objetivando a alta e a constituição de centros de referência clínica para este grupo específico da população, com trabalho multi e interdisciplinar.

The space environment influences spacecraft design and material selection in many ways. Two aspects of the space environment that were of interest for this research are the vacuum and atomic oxygen (AO) environments. This project used the outgassing testing chamber and the AO chamber in the Cal Poly Space Environments lab to test multiple common spacecraft materials and determine whether AO affects the outgassing properties of those materials. This research has relevant applications in the design and material selection for spacecraft in low-Earth orbits. AO and outgassing are both known to be individual contributors of spacecraft material mass loss and degradation, but laboratory tests on the synergy are rare. ASTM E595 standardized test procedures were used to determine the Total Mass Loss (TML) and Collected Volatile Condensable Materials (CVCM) values for each material, at which point the test group of materials were subjected to AO exposure according to ASTM E2089 while the control group remained under similar vacuum and temperature conditions. Finally, all of the materials were subjected to a second ASTM E595 test. The results show a statistically significant effect of AO on some materials' outgassing properties. In particular, three of the four silicone materials tested showed a lower TML for the AO exposed group compared to the control group which can be explained by the glassification of silicone due to AO exposure. This explanation was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. More testing is recommended to confirm the trends found during the testing and to re-test the materials whose wide variation in outgassing values prevented conclusions from being drawn.

Understanding the demographic profile and previous knowledge base of students enrolled in the introduction to animal science course is critical for developing curriculum to enhance student learning. During the fall 2019 semester, students (n=414 of 519) enrolled in the introduction to animal science course at three universities in the Midwest region were evaluated with the objectives of identifying demographic variables and their relation to pre-course and post-course animal agriculture and livestock perceptions. The findings showed that 68% of respondents were female, 58% were animal science majors, and 55% were from hometowns with less than 20,000 people in the population. Forty-eight percent and 36% indicated to have previous agriculture exposure and involvement through FFA and 4-H, while 43% and 55% had no previous involvement in FFA and 4-H, respectively. Companion animals (e.g. dogs and cats) and beef cattle were nearly 50% of students’ species of interest. Additionally, 34% of students felt they had extensive knowledge of companion animals, while 19% indicated they had extensive knowledge in beef cattle and 17% in equine. Students indicated to have the least amount of knowledge in sheep and exotic animals. In addition to species, students indicated their degree of previous knowledge in animal science disciplines. Students (20%) perceived to have extensive knowledge in welfare and well-being but lacked in breeding and genetics. Majority of students recognized animal agriculture as an important industry in their state and were supportive of the growth and expansion of the livestock industry. When asked to respond to statements pertaining to livestock operations, students (49%) strongly agree the use of captive bolt to stun beef and dairy cattle prior to slaughter is acceptable and it is save for livestock producers to perform castration using banding or surgical procedures. Overall, there were pre-course findings that were statistically significant among the demographic profiles of students and their perceptions of livestock operations in the United States, but few post-course findings demonstrated statistical significance. This research suggests the importance of developing curriculum that meets the desires and needs of current students enrolled in an introduction to animal science course.

A implementação de um ERP pressupõe, não só, a instalação de um novo software, como exige uma mudança significativa na atitude, na disposição e na prática de todos os colaboradores de uma organização. Esta mudança estrutural torna-se de tal forma relevante que tanto pode conduzir à optimização de todo o processo de negócio, com benefícios consideráveis, como pode resultar num fiasco financeiro que, em situações extremas, conduz à falência da empresa. Neste sentido, o propósito deste estudo é demonstrar as alterações práticas que ocorreram numa empresa de transformação de bacalhau, como resultado da implementação de um sistema ERP. Pretende-se averiguar se a implementação trouxe, de facto, vantagens significativas que permitiram alterar o modelo organizacional, estrutura funcional, processo de negócio e as competências dos recursos humanos. ABSTRACT: The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and the problems arising from its implementation in organizations have given rise to numerous studies, analysis and discussions. Although it is a multifunctional system, designed to be practical and easy to handle, nevertheless, however, involve a complex implementation, it includes people, processes, machines and software, as a whole are not at all simple to manage. Implementing an ERP requires not only installing new software, but also requires a significant change in attitude, provision and practice of all employees of an organization. This structural change becomes so important that both can lead to optimize the entire business process with considerable benefits, as could also result in a financial fiasco that in extreme situations led to bankruptcy. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to demonstrate the practical changes that occurred in a processing plant for cod, as a result of implementing an ERP system. The aim is to verify if the implementation has brought, in fact, the significant advantages that allowed changing the organizational model, organizational structure, business process and skills of human resources.

Atomic clusters are attractive candidates for building motifs for new nano-assembled materials with desirable properties. At this nano-regime of matter, the size, shape, and composition of clusters changes their electronic structure and hence their properties. Computational modeling must work hand in hand with experiment to provide robust descriptions of the geometries and energetics of atomic clusters and how they might behave in a nano-assembled material. To this end, we have investigated three distinct species as model systems: antimony oxides SbxOy (x = 1, 2; y = 0 - 3), metal ion-solvent complexes Mm(NH3)n (M = Bi, Pb; m = 1 - 2, n = 0 - 4), and quantum dots Z10H16 (Z = Si, Ge) and β-Sn12H24. Their geometries and electronic structures have been determined using gradient-corrected density functional theory. The relative stabilities for antimony oxides have been examined by the respective comparison of highest-occupied and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gaps and atomization energies. The superior electronic stability of Sb2O3 is indicated by its closed shell structure, wide HOMO-LUMO gap calculated to be 3.11 eV, and high atomization energy of 4.21 eV. Spin-orbit corrections were necessary for accurate calculation of the metal-solvent energetics, closing the gap between experimental and theoretical values by 1.05 eV for the electron affinity of the Pb atom. Quantum dot modeling of the well-established Si and Ge as well as the less-investigated Sn illuminated the accuracy of the CEP basis sets and the B3LYP functional over other DFT computational routes for clusters containing elements beyond the third row. Throughout, the results correlate well with experiment and higher order ab initio methods where data is available. These comparisons validate the accuracy of the computational routes used. The first part of this thesis aims to identify and analyze what aspects of the MIL-HDBK-217 prediction model are causing the large variation between prediction and field reliability. The key findings of the literature research suggest that the main reason for the inaccuracy in prediction is because of the constant failure rate assumption used in MIL-HDBK-217 is usually not applicable. Secondly, even if the constant failure rate assumption is applicable, the disparity may still exist in the presence of design and quality related problems in new systems. A possible solution is to apply reliability growth testing (RGT) to new systems during the development phase in an attempt to remove these design deficiencies so that the system's reliability will grow and approach the predicted value. In view of the importance of RGT in minimizing the disparity, this thesis provides a detailed application of the AMSAA Extended Reliability Growth Models to the reliability growth analysis of a combat system. It shows how program managers can analyze test data using commercial software to estimate the system demonstrated reliability and the increased in reliability due to delayed fixes.

Recently, gambling behavior has been studied not only as a product of reinforcement schedules, but as a product of verbal behavior. Previous studies have shown that relations can be taught that then affect choices made during gambling. It can be assumed, therefore, that relations are learned in a gambler’s natural environment that affect his behavior. Slot machine theme draws many suggestions as casinos put in great efforts to increase the number of themes available. The goal of the present study was to examine the effects of choice, in regards to theme, and win amount on participants’ play. Results indicate that neither win amount nor choice had effect on participants’ gambling engagement.

The problem is even worst in Brazil because millions of potential contributors ' are left out of lhe pay-as-you-go system as a result of labor market informality. Based on long run model simulations, this work measures lhe demographic transition fiscal effect. And, admitting this new age distribution will hold, simulates which reform proposals have greater impact on reducing pension system deficits. Among lhe main conclusions are: (i) demographic transition alone is responsible for (almost) doubling lhe pension system equilibrium tax rale, and; (ii) although it is extremely important to approve traditional pension system reform proposals, increasing lhe regime's coverage through including part of lhe 45 million informal workers as contributors helps reducing deficits as much.
É consenso que as tendências demográficas de longo prazo estão por trás da deterioração das contas previdenciárias na grande maioria dos países do globo. O problema se agrava no Brasil, pois a informalidade do mercado de trabalho exclui milhões de potenciais contribuintes do regime de repartição. O trabalho mensura, através de simulações de um modelo de longo prazo, qual o impacto fiscal das mudanças introduzidas pela transição demográfica. E, admitindo a persistência dessa nova estrutura etária no país, simula quais propostas de reforma da previdência têm maior resultado na redução dos déficits atualmente registrados no INSS. Dentre as principais conclusões estão: (i) a transição demográfica sozinha é responsável por quase dobrar a alíquota previdenciária necessária para equilibrar o sistema, e; (ii) apesar de ser extremamente importante aprovar as propostas de reforma tradicionais (instituição de idade mínima, taxação dos inativos e mudanças nas regras de cálculo dos benefícios), aumentar a cobertura do regime de repartição através da inclusão dos aproximadamente 45 milhões de trabalhadores informais não-contribuintes reduz déficits em magnitude semelhante.

Flavonoids are plant secondary metabolites well known for many key roles in the life cycle of plants. They also can affect human health. Citrus paradisi is known to produce several glucosylated flavonoids and these compounds are glucosylated by enzymes known as glucosyltransferases (GTs). The focus of this research was to optimize the heterologous expression, enrichment, and biochemical characterization of grapefruit putative GT protein, PGT2, and to test the hypothesis that PGT2 is a flavonoid GT. Results showed detectable amounts of activity with quercetin, a flavonol; however, activity was lower than what would be expected if this enzyme were a flavonol-specific GT.
