Abstract:
Was im späten 18. Was im 19.

Abstract:
La specificite du caractere thermal de ces constructions et projets est telle qu'il est peutetre juste de parler d'"architecture thermale" seulement durant cette periode, car elle se desagrege ensuite dans une variete de references et de formes moins "parlantes"<br>The study of the thermal baths built or schemed between 1800 and 1850 shows a "thermal architecture", specific and coherent as far as functions, patterns and outlines are concerned in relation to a system of production ruled by the administration (especially the "conseil des batiments civils" end the "prefets"; that is examplary of a general system of architecture in the provincies) and in relation to series of mental representations, social (holidays in spas) and cultural (through literature and arts), typical of this romantic period. Whether we take into consideration the quantity, the quality and therapeutic, legal, theoretical and functionnal factors, the impact of the thermal production is considerable and has a strong influence over the following periods which are considered as the golden age of thermalism. The roots of the foundation of spas towns are already lain. The use of the words "thermal architecture" utterly suit the original "caractere" of the constructions and projects of this period, better justified here than fot the latter periods when words and concept fit less obviously, because the references and outlines become less expressive

Morton, Vanessa. "Quaker politics and industrial change, c.1800-1850." Thesis, Open University, 1988. http://oro.open.ac.uk/57260/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores early 19th century Quakers from the perspective of the social history of religion. It examines the ways in which Quaker organisation adapted to arid facilitated economic change, and in which Quackerism and Quaker politics developed to reflect and represent the new economic and social requirements of this predominantly bourgeois and business community. Chapter II sets out the most significant features of the 18th century background: the process of Quaker consolidation, economic and political activity, the shift to evangelicalism. Chapter III explores the London Quaker evangelical elite around William Allen, Elizabeth Fry, Joseph John Gurney: their interconnections with the Clapham "Saints", with Dissenting evangelicals, with Whig "progressives", and with the Benthamites: their role as political lobby: their contribution to the development and dissemination of concepts of social modification in the service of industrial development, infused by religion. Chapters IV and V examine the provincial challenge to the London Quaker establishment in the 1830s and 40s, within the arenas of pressure group politics - most notably anti-slavery - and the development of a combatant Quaker press. These chapters continue the analysis of the role of of within Quaker politics begun in Chapter III, and explore the basis for the internal conflicts and shifts between Quaker "Whiggery" and Quaker "Liberalism". Chapters VI and VII comprise two case-studies of Quaker provincial economic, social and political activity. Chapter VI examines how Birmingham Quaker employers implemented structural change, the split within the Quaker community over the rise of Liberal politics and the challenge of Chartism. It focuses particularly on Joseph Sturge and the Complete Suffrage movement. Chapter VII analyses the varying economic and political strategies of the Pease and Backhouse dynasties in South Durham and their relationship to Quaker organisation and affiliation. In conclusion, chapter VIII attempts to analyse the essential features of the economic, political and religious development of the Quaker community over the period, and the ways in which it reflected, contributed to and participated in the development of bourgeois Liberalism.

Abstract:
The first half of the XIXth century in France is a period of time of special interest as to the study of the act of reading, especially for the youth -indeed those were decades of great economic, technological and social changes. As reading assumed a universal value, it progressively affected or concerned the youth in every social stratum. This study focuses on all the media and objects of reading as well as on its various modes and conditions for young readers. Reading was an act of great significance for the age group under study and as such it leads to a reflection on the concept of youth. This research goes into the close study of a corpus of 30 texts (mainly initiatory novels and autobiographies) in an attempt to "read the act of reading". To achieve this, the representations transmitted but also recreated through the process of writing are set against the history of books and of reading

Abstract:
This thesis examines the major themes and personalities which influenced the outbreak of a number of Evangelical clerical secessions from the Church of England during the first half of the nineteenth century. Chapter one discusses the relationship between the Evangelicals and the Church of England. Chapter two examines the Evangelicals' objections to certain aspects of the Established Church during the late eighteenth century, especially those things which appeared to inhibit evangelism. Chapter three examines Irish Evangelical seceders, in particular the secessions of John Walker and Thomas Kelly. These influential clergymen abandoned the Church and established their own 'connexions' based on a return to 'Apostolic' principles, which were propagated with disruptive effects on both sides of the Irish Sea. Chapter four investigates the outbreak of the Western Schism: a small band of well-connected Evangelical clergy and laymen who seceded from the Church of England in 1815, and formed their own religious 'connexion.' The Schism's antinomian influence was considerable, provoking an alarmed response. Chapter five enquires into the outbreak of millennial expectation in England, in particular the influence of Henry Drummond and Edward Irving, and the founding of the celebrated Albury Conferences for the study of unfulfilled prophecy. Chapter six explores the similar outbreak of millennial expectation in Ireland. Lady Powerscourt, the Powerscourt Conferences, the early career of John Nelson Darby, and the formation of the Christian Brethren are all considered. Chapter seven is set in Oxford, where Darby's teachings were being advanced by Henry Bulteel, the influential Evangelical curate of St. Ebbe's. The propagation of Bulteel 's dogmatic Protestantism produced a theological and doctrinal backlash, which paved the way for the advancement of the Oxford Movement and the publication of the Tracts. Chapter eight examines the secession of the Hon. and Rev. Baptist W. Noel, and the Evangelical response to the Gorham affair. Chapter nine probes into the contentious case of the Rev. James Shore, and the canonical implications of clerical secession from the Church of England. These Evangelical secessions were often influential out of all proportion to their numbers, provoking consternation within both the Church and Evangelicalism, and highlighting the inherent tensions between the evangelical conversionist imperative and the principles and practice of a national religious establishment.

Abstract:
This thesis illustrates, examines and explains a diversity of female responses to Evangelical religion in Kent and Northamptonshire between 1800 and 1850. Previously untapped archival sources are investigated producing fresh evidence of Evangelicalism in women's domestic and local experience. Special collections, parish records and various other documents are explored to establish the religious and social identities of women featuring most prominently in this study. Family background, socio-economic circumstances, local environment and childhood denominational influences are shown to have been of greatest significance in shaping the spiritual attitudes and activities of women discussed here individually, or collectively. Local traditions of belief were important and the historical development of Evangelical religion in specific parishes is traced. Female responses to Evangelicalism are considered not only in parochial, but also in broader religious, political, intellectual, geographical and social contexts of the period. This wide-ranging enquiry points to avenues of research that can bring something new to the local history of women and Evangelical religion. Chapter one concerns an Orthodox Anglican woman with a family history of ecclesiastical and civic service in Canterbury, whose antipathy towards Evangelicalism and its expansion in Kent is investigated from her correspondence. The second chapter focuses on women in a Northamptonshire family who provided a home for the Rev. Thomas Jones (of Creaton) for over fifty years. Letters and other substantial documents give insight into a household and locality significant as centres of Evangelical religion. Chapter three investigates female involvement with the Church Missionary Society, the British and Foreign Bible Society and other Evangelical activities in and around Creaton. The final chapter relates to a young lacemaker belonging to a Particular Baptist community in Northamptonshire established by noted Evangelicals. Analysis of some of her published poems and hymns reveals them openly expressive of Evangelicalism.

The township of San Carlos, now Campinas, went through intense changes during the 19th century. In less than 50 years, it went from a domestic mode of production to an economy based on exchange and market value. In the 1830s, it produced one-third of the production of sugar of the province of Sao Paulo. The land began to be disputed by large producers who sought in various ways to remove small farmers from their properties. The freedmen who worked the land, lived with the threat of losing their means of production, and of falling into debt. In this process of social and economic expropriation of the lower classes, the freedwomen engaged in commerce were subjected to increasing regulation and supervision and were harassed by the authorities as well as by other merchants. As free workers, freed slaves and their descendants saw their lives become more and more precarious. Seeking to understand how the advance of capitalism directly affected the trajectory of these people, I analyze the different patterns of accumulation and strategies for survival that characterized different generations The methodology applied was that of nominative record linkage names of people identified as "pardos" in the Lists of Inhabitants of the township of San Carlos, between 1801 and 1829 were cross-referenced with the names of the principal judicial and probate documents<br>Mestrado<br>Historia Social<br>Mestra em História

This thesis discusses the Portuguese migration to the captaincy and then province of Pará, between 1800 and 1850. In this period marked by political ruptures - with the Independence of Brazil from Portugal and Pará Accession to the new country -, the emergence of a markedly antilusitanian movement and shades of extreme rivalry acquired through Cabanagem, we concern ourselves with the Lusitanian migration dynamics in Pará. Making use of privileged documents, which are the passport records issued in Portugal to the city of Belém do Pará, we proposed first to quantify the migration occurring between these two spaces in the investigated period. In a second moment of research, we proceed to establish a dialogue between serial and microanalysis history: of the 1339 individuals who immigrated to Pará, we follow the life paths of some of those immigrants from Portugal to Pará. Commercial business, family arrangements and strategies of economic and social integration are among other topics discussed throughout this thesis.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the history of family life in northwestern Mexico between 1800 and 1850 through the examination of around 700 state civil and criminal court records from the Sonoran state archives. It demonstrates that in spite of characterizations of ineptitude and underdevelopment, the local judiciary of Sonora, Mexico, was an important arbiter of social hierarchies based on ethnicity, class, gender and age, where people from across the social spectrum created, reconstituted and challenged these inequalities. Moreover, court proceedings reflect the persisting centrality of colonial law and legal process, as well as the growing influence of liberal ideology on judicial outcomes. Marriage, consensual unions, inheritance, sexuality, intergenerational relationships and hierarchies, children and servants are the central themes of this study. An examination of census data, parish records and court testimonies demonstrates the diversity of family patterns in Sonora during the first half of the nineteenth century, including large numbers of small farmers, a significant minority of female-headed households, as well as men and women living in consensual unions. These sources suggest that while Sonorans idealized marital fidelity and deference on the part of women and younger kin, and mutual reciprocity among family members, social practice was far more irregular than any regional patriarch could possibly hope. They also demonstrate that men and women looked increasingly to "the state," in the form of the local courts, to resolve their familial disputes after independence.

Abstract:
The routine consumption patterns of ordinary consumers in the first half of the nineteenth century, particularly those in the provinces, have been neglected. This thesis sheds light on this area by investigating one particular commodity, clothing. To undertake this, a range of archival sources, visual evidence and surviving dress relating to the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire have been examined. The data has enabled an analysis of the consumption of clothing in different locations within the two counties, including county towns, industrial regions and villages, to be carried out. The results have highlighted the many different methods of clothing supply available to the non-elite consumer, which included shop retailing, itinerant selling, illicit networks and clothing distributed via the Poor Law and charity. The thesis demonstrates firstly that the non-elite consumer could obtain clothing from a variety of outlets, using different acquisition methods. Secondly, it shows that this clothing varied in both style and the way it was manufactured, often depending on the supply network utilised. The thesis questions assumptions about the availability of ready-made clothing, the nature of retailing clothing in rural areas, the decline of hawking and peddling, the non-elite use of clothing shops and non-elite consumers’ relationship with fashion. It emphasizes that non-elite consumers had a complex relationship with their clothing, influenced in part by personal preference, gender, economic circumstances and stage in the life-cycle. This thesis shows the multifarious ways non-elite, provincial consumers acquired and wore their clothing.

This thesis concerns the reports of travelers who came to the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the province of Rio Grande do Sul within the period of 1800-1850. Based on such accounts, we seek to analyze their thoughts about the city, emphasizing the way these travelers saw, interpreted and described the landscape and the urban aspects of Porto Alegre. Simultaneously we go through the official documents produced by the City Council to try to apprehend how the local authorities perceived the aspects related by those travelers during this period, also considering the claims of the local population about the area. Also, the analysis of the historical maps and charts of this period allowed us to understand the spatial growth of the city. Our goal was to make a connection between the many impressions of Porto Alegre and also to establish what are the differences and resemblances between the foreign and the local points of view.

Abstract:
The study discusses the practices and collective expressions of blacks in nineteenth-century Brazil, here defined as associationism, understanding them not only as social spaces, but also as important educational instances for this population within the slavery system. Accordingly, we sought to identify these different forms of social organization in the Province of Pernambuco in the first half of the nineteenth century, as well as the possible existing connections between them, also analyzing the capacity of social and political activities of these entities, including their organization and operation, in addition to analyzing the importance of the educational dimension to this process. For this, we performed a documentary research from consulting to some collections of the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage - IPHAN, on the brotherhoods black and browns, supplementing with the consulting government documents in the Assembly file legislative Pernambuco - ALEPE, the search for more clues about the daily activities of these organizations. In the Public Archives State of Pernambuco, collect information about everyday relationship between blacks and social control of the province. Also researched the law of that time to verify the legal basis of which the action stemmed from the provincial authorities and that affected the black, free and slave population; was completed with the consultation of the newspapers of the time in Nabuco Foundation, particularly the Diario de Pernambuco, whose movement started in this period makes the rounds of the Province experienced by different social actors. We believe that such associative arrangements of the black population meant the construction of "autonomous " social and political life within the slavery system, both in material terms, as symbolic alternatives for which also drew on African traditions and principles shared between generations. Thus, the educational factor is evidenced as a fundamental dimension of associative dynamics, allowing the sharing of values and knowledge between members of different groups, which made these organizations educabilidades true instances where this black population could seek inspiration and learning to continue recognizing and reaffirming its identity value in Brazil.<br>O estudo se propõe a discutir as práticas e expressões coletivas dos negros no Brasil oitocentista, aqui definidas como associacionismo, entendendo-as não apenas enquanto espaços de sociabilidade, mas também pelo seu papel como instâncias educativas importantes para esta população no interior da ordem escravista.

Bates, Kate. "Morality for the masses : the social significance of crime and punishment discourse in British broadsides, 1800-1850." Thesis, Keele University, 2013. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/3829/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the sociological significance of crime and punishment discourse in early-nineteenth-century broadsides. Broadsides were a form of street literature and, for almost 300 years until the late nineteenth century, were a forerunner to our modern tabloid newspapers. As such, they were published on a wide range of topics, but by far the most prevalent were those covering violent crime, especially murder, and the public execution of criminals. The publication of this genre of broadside reached a peak in the first half of the nineteenth century and its popular appeal was greatest among the labouring poor. This has led several scholars to propose two prominent, yet contrasting, arguments: namely, that this ‘gallows literature’ should be read as either evidence of attempts at ideological social control or merely as a form of debased, sensationalistic entertainment. However, this thesis proposes that broadsides actually reveal ordinary people’s thoughts and feelings about crime and criminal justice and, as such, reflect common moralities and mentalities. By presenting a detailed discourse analysis of 650 broadsides printed all over Britain between the years 1800-1850, this thesis provides an alternative interpretation as to the form, function and meaning of their narratives of crime. This interpretation is based upon the social theories of Emile Durkheim, who recognised the higher utility of crime and punishment as being one of social integration and the preservation of moral boundaries. The central argument of this thesis, therefore, is that broadsides relating to crime and punishment were a form of moral communication for the masses and that they are examples of how the working class once attempted to bolster a sense of stability and community, during the transitional years of the early nineteenth century, by effectively representing both a consolidation and celebration of their core values and beliefs.

Macfarlane, Helen Louise. "'Il faut savoir l'Italien pour déchiffrer une romance française' : Italian presence in the French Romance 1800-1850." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2015. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/377914/.

Full text
Abstract:
The French romance is a short and simple strophic song for solo voice and a single accompanying instrument (namely the piano or guitar). Musically, the accompaniment presents unadorned figurations and the vocal style should have a limited virtuosity (including little ornamentation and vibrato and a narrow vocal range, for instance). Thematically, the text should be related to love and romance. It is primarily performed within a domestic environment, which particularly suits its intimate and naïve features. Its quintessential French character is widely noted by a number of nineteenth-century commentators and theorists. It is therefore noteworthy that, despite the initial wariness demonstrated by some French writers, many Italian composers significantly contributed to this French genre. This is the first study to place the romance within the context of its Italian influences. In addition, it provides an extensive database of the French romances composed by Italian musicians during the nineteenth century. An analysis of the repertory sheds light upon some significant romances, and these are used as prominent case studies throughout the thesis. The thesis also explores nineteenth-century discussions of the romance, and investigates the careers of notable Italian romanciers. This study highlights two issues. First, an exploration of the important treatises reveals the main characteristics that are integral to the quintessential romance style. And second, analysis of the romances by Italian composers, conversely, exposes the wide and varying styles present (this includes aspects pertaining to form, accompaniment styles, and the vocal melody). Indeed, this is supported by the discovery that, as the nineteenth century progressed, there was a gradual acceptance of Italian composers contributing to this genre. In the late eighteenth century, Italian influences were considered a threat to the romance’s simplicity, and in the 1840s, composers were actively praised for incorporating both Italian and French styles into their romances. Chapter 1, ‘History of the Romance’ provides an overview of the romance’s early definition and development. Chapter 2, ‘Romance as a French Genre’, places the nineteenth-century romance in the context of its reception, and studies its conventions as laid out in the treatises. Chapter 3, ‘Italians in Paris’, traces the progression from wariness to admiration of the Italian romanciers and investigates the careers of some important Italian figures. The final chapter, ‘Music of the “Italian” French Romances’ explores the music of the Italian composers, and demonstrates the wide ranging and varying styles prevalent in their romances.

Ghalib, Sabah Abdullah. "The emergence of Kurdism with special reference to the three Kurdish Emirates within the Ottoman Empire 1800-1850." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3676.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the concept of Kurdism and its emergence in the first half of the nineteenth century. The study explores the foundations, origins and evolution of Kurdish nationalism, which has grown out of Kurdism. It focuses on the three Kurdish emirates of Soran, Botan and Baban and their relationship with the Ottomans during the first half of the nineteenth century. Warm Ottoman-Kurdish relations continued until the beginning of the New Order (Nizami Cedit) under Sultan Selim III 1789-1807 and Sultan Mahmud II 1808-1839, and the modernisation and administrative reform (known in Turkish as Tanzimat) of the empire, which took place between 1839-1876. At this time, central power was in the hands of the Sultan who abolished all local authorities in the capital and in the Ottoman provinces, including Kurdish semi-autonomous emirates. This direct rule was met by strong Kurdish resistance. From this point, the Kurds conceived of the Ottomans as the “other” whose direct rule over them was unwelcome. They resisted the Ottoman policy of centralisation and the notion of Kurdism flourished. This can be regarded as a key turning point for the development of Kurdish nationalism, reinvigorating a Kurdish consciousness in respect of politics, language and literature. Kurdish Melas (Islamic scholars), popular poets and Kurdish folkloric poets played a major role in the creation of Kurdism in the first half of the nineteenth century in Soran, Botan and Baban emirates. Kurdish writers and scholars turned to literary forms for the expressions of Kurdish cultural politics. This thesis examines a range of literary sources to consider the rule of Kurdish mirs (princes), in politics, and the position of Kurdish intellectuals in the politics of language and culture in Kurdish emirate in the first half of the nineteenth century. This study shows how identification with Kurdism had enabled the Kurds to articulate their claim to their community and their emirates. Kurdism went on to engender Kurdish nationalism, whose growth was reflected in the late nineteenth century through the Kurdish revolt of 1880 by Sheikh Ubeydullah Nehri, the establishment of the first Kurdish newspaper in 1897 and the literature of the period, and which matured further in the twentieth century.

This dissertation has the concern in studying the urban homes of Belém in the first half of the century XIX.

D. Josep Manel Capdevila Alvia i de Vilardaga.<br/>Dr. D. Josep Castells i Comás.<br/>Dr. D. Joaquín Cil i Bores.<br/>Dr. D. Francisco de Paula Folch i Amich.<br/>Dr. <br/><br/>9. Abstract:
The first half of the Germanic Nineteenth Century saw the shift of the religious expression in a massive and multiple way towards the profane sphere. Vocabulary, patterns and religious ideals are recast in the historical prism to enter philosophy, literature, visual arts and music. In a tense aesthetic, political and social climate to « Bildung », the moral and religious edification of society, the community representation becomes the privileged aim of art. Evidence of this is found in the Gothic architectural renewal, the activism of Nazarene paintings and grandiose representation arrangements in historical-religious opera and oratorio. The more unusual religious penetration into the symphony finds a significant field of contextualization that allows to elucidate the contradictory mutations of the booming genre. Committed since classicism to a spiritual vocation rejecting the intelligible, it is nonetheless true that the symphony is invested with religious representations focusing on community image. In the attraction of the work of Beethoven, symphonies by Mendelssohn and Schumann, along with those of Spohr, give emphasis to topoï connoting or indicating the religious, starting with hymns and old styles. Their respective symphonic corpus appear remarkably homogeneous, no less than in retrospect correspondence. By amplifying the spiritual representations via the cyclic technique, they are subsequently grasped in a religious vocation of accomplishment, likely in resonance with the historicist conceptions of immanence and transcendence

Abstract:
Those new states are born after a long series of political combats and social struggles, but their existence has need also the complexe elaboration of an array of cultural notions being builts at the same time. We focus in that process of cultural constructions that occurs in the Buenos Aires's region. That new cultural set of notions will give the new-borns states a representation of their territorial particularities, a sense for thinking their relationships between South America and Europe and a goals for political achievements

Abstract:
The reunion of African people, slaves and freemen, in ethnic groups was the one of the characteristics of the forms of organization and of sociabilities of this population in some regions of Brazil. Firstly, these ethnic categories had been created by the individuals who dealt with the commerce of slaves, which were dealers, traders and purchases with physical and moral characteristics and cultural attributes which had as objective to facililate the traffic. Later, this ethnic distinction also was incorporated by the African people themselves, slaves and freemen as an element of the proper organization. This dissertation has as objective to study the process of redefinition of the ethnic groups and the construction of the African identities around some spaces of sociabilities in the city of São Paulo, during the first half of the 19th century. It is intended to argue, based on the concept of the ethnic group supplied by the anthropologist Frederik Barth, the forms of attribution and identification of these groups by external agents as the Catholic Church and the proprietors of slaves. This concept also has as estimated the incorporation by the African people themselves who had identified with these ethnic groups, directing their forms of organization, after all, by the means of the association in religious brotherhoods, reunion in batuques, capoeiras and dances. This identification to determined groups took into account some characteristics that are considered in common as the language, the ancestry and the vision of the world. The intention is to perceive as the incorporation of determined ethnic groups directed the organization forms, the manifestations of their traditions by the means of the cultural aspects, the relation with different ethnic groups and with others social classes

Abstract:
This study of the diffusion of comic in Europe, through the productions of opere buffe, opéras-comiques and komische Opern during the first half of the 19th century, firstly examines the libretti and their circulation, then the diffusion of comic operas, and lastly the musical structural models of comic and their transfers. The French theatre inaugurates the age of « industrial literature » imposing itself on the whole continent, and the French librettists benefit from the profitable system of royalties. Discredited and badly payed, the Italian and German librettists translate and adapt a great number of French plays. While the opera buffa enjoys an incredible diffusion in France and in Germany between 1800 and 1850, as well in the original language as in translation, and while the opéra-comique follows suit in Germany (but always in translation), the komische Oper is rarely played in France, and the French and German genres remain unknown in Italy. The structural models of Italian comic, of which Rossini’s opere buffe are the most famous expression, are taken up by French and German composers in their own works. The German composers also borrow from the structural models of French comic, so much so that the genre of the komische Oper ends up consisting principally of a synthesis of French and Italian elements. During a period characterised by the rise of nationalisms, the circulation of the works, the librettists and the composers paradoxically favours the construction of a European unity through laughter
