Täljedal, Inge-Bert. "The idea of being is not uniquely innate." Principia: an international journal of epistemology 20, no. 3 (April 9, 2017): 343. http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/808-1711.2016v20n3p359.

Full text
Abstract:
http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1808-1711.2016v20n3p343According to the Italian philosopher Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855), being is an innate idea that is requisite for contemplating anything. He emphatically claims that it is the one and only innate idea. Rosmini makes a sharp distinction between sensations and perceptions. Perceptions are thought to arise when the undetermined idea of being (tantamount to possibility) is combined with sensations, universals when being is combined with perceptions. It is argued here that Rosmini’s explanation of the origin of universals does not work. If the idea of being is regarded as innate, then several others should be similarly regarded, notably the idea of qualitative identity which is an idea necessary for deriving universals. Although Rosmini holds that certain properties are necessarily present in real objects and therefore implicit in the idea of being, the property of being qualitatively identical with something else is not among those properties. Theological motives may have encouraged Rosmini to emphasize being as a peculiarly fundamental idea. However, if the idea of being is more fundamental than other universals, it may be regarded so in virtue of its generality, not because it has a uniquely innate character.

Abstract:
AbstractThe main purpose of this essay is to articulate the ideas of the last powerful advocate of natural rights in nineteenth-century America. That last powerful advocate was the Massachusetts-born radical libertarian Lysander Spooner (1808-1887). Besides his powerful antebellum attacks on slavery, Spooner developed forceful arguments on behalf of a strongly individualistic conception of natural law and private property rights and against coercive moralism, coercive paternalism, and state authority and legislation. This essay focuses on the theoretical core of Spooner’s position which is his doctrine of natural rights—a doctrine that is primarily developed in Spooner’s The Law of Intellectual Property (1855), Natural Law (1882), and A Letter to Grover Cleveland (1886). I situate Spooner within the libertarian tradition in political thought by beginning this essay with an examination of two English writers whose radical writings (for the most part) preceded Spooner’s—Thomas Hodgskin (1787-1869) and the early Herbert Spencer (1820-1903). I emphasis the strongly Lockean character of Spooner’s thought and support this contention in part by showing how much more Lockean Spooner was than either Hodgskin or the early Spencer.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the late period of the life of the hero of the anti-French struggle in Algeria, Emir Abd al-Qadir al-Jazairi (1808—1883) in Ottoman Damascus in 1855—1883. Refusing to continue the fight against the French colonialists after being released from captivity and moving to Ottoman possessions, Abd al-Qadir devoted his later life to charity and teaching the mystical teachings of Muhyi al-Din Ibn Arabi (1165—1240). The activities of Abd al-Qadir in Ottoman Damascus were inscribed in the moral, religious and political context of his era, when the Ottoman Empire was subjected to increasing pressure from the European powers. Abd al-Qadir sought to find an Islamic response to this external challenge through spiritual perfection based on the teachings of Ibn Arabi. Abd al-Qadir al-Jazairi from a young age belonged to the followers of Ibn Arabi and therefore perceived his life in Damascus not as an exile, but as a way of approaching the comprehension of the mystical insights of Ibn Arabi, who at one time also lived for many years in Damascus where he was buried. In Damascus, Abd al-Qadir enjoyed great spiritual authority and provided patronage to his countrymen — immigrants from Algeria and other countries of the Maghreb. The circle of his chosen disciples was also replenished with local Syrian ulama. Under the influence of Abd al-Qadir, close relations were established between immigrants from Algeria and local Sufis on the basis of Islamic mysticism. The intellectual activity of the circle of followers of Abd al-Qadir in Damascus contributed to the strengthening of the position of Sufism in Ottoman Syria on the basis of the spiritual convergence of the beliefs of the followers of various Islamic mystical teachings.

Abstract:

Paris 4, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990PA040038.

Full text
Abstract:
The first part of this thesis attempts to methodically define a corpus of texts which totally resemble one or another of the poels in Nerval's Chimeres. Working on the assumption that coupling texts from different volumes written by Nerval is justified only in cases where the two structures may be superimposed, I discovered fewer doublets in Les Filles du feu than in Voyage en Orient, Les Illuminés and Aurelia. I therefore had good grounds for broadening my of the book of sonnets, les Chimeres (though it is in itself of considerable importance), in order to complete the semantic field which is divided between life and death, and which branches out into dichotomies. The moral world can be deduced from the physical world, even down to its hierarchy of dramas (religion, politics, society and family) - in which the analysis of energy whether immanent or transcendent, attractive or not in relation to another source of energy, might be used to define figures of fire (or even figures of darkness) names in les Chimeres and which will be classified in a third field, a narrative one, which is prepared by this thesis

Glatigny, Sandra. Paris 4, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA040097.

Full text
Abstract:
This work intends to replace the way Nerval’s syncretism operates in a poetic perspective. Indeed these mythological configurations generate a specific and lyrical writing. Although in Aurelia and Les Chimères the different levels of rewriting, from the most minute to the most complete, are constructed differently depending on the textual environment, these modes of appearances of myth merge so as to question the subject and stage its quest of the self. Nerval’s lyricism feeds on the narrative and symbolic dynamics of actualisations in order to come out of the autarkical and static expression of feelings. For the paradoxical convergence of both myth, or universal narrative, and lyricism, or representation of the personal affect, occurs within a precise esthetic project. The aim is to call generic and linguistic categories into question and rediscover Orpheus’song : a speech which, liberated from its shackles, relays the voices of the world

Abstract:
In 1943, g. De n. Set out for a long journey in the east. He hoped that travel in a sacred land would give him access to the deepest secrets of human destiny through an initiation to nature, religion, society, myths, women. . . The main stages of that initiative journey were egypt, lebanon and finally turkey. To become integrated in that orient. , he fused into a vast syncretism the tenets of islam, christianism, drusism, esoterism. But the journey proved a failure for he didn't manage to reach the essence of what he imagined the orient to be. It ended without bringing a revalation, initiation didn't reach its final stage : renaissance transformation

Abstract:
The thesis is a study of Leo Burckart. Leaned heavily on the research of historical documents, it provides the version written in 1838 by Dumas and Nerval, and the minutes of censorship, and the entire press articles on the performances. Based on the appropriate accounts of Gerard de Nerval, it solves or attempts to resolve certain issues related to the text, to know the exact number of performances, the scenery, the chorus (Arndt, and Körner and Weber), the initiation rite of Waldeck and it reveals the source of some of the texts that accompany the volume edition of 1839, finally, she locates a copy of the Spanish edition. For a comparative work on both versions 1838 and 1839, scene by scene, it offers a historical, political, literary and aesthetic Nervalian on writing. It contains a list of over eight hundred newspapers and periodicals reflecting the activity of the Parisian press for the year 1839

Abstract:
The topic of this thesis is the romantic "promenade" as a literary theme in the works of two 19th century authors: Gerard de Nerval and George Sand.
We have used Rousseau's Reveries du promeneur solitaire as foundation text in our research. Our corpus is comprised of two works by Gerard de Nerval: Sylvie and Promenades et Souvenirs, as well as George Sand's Lettres d'un voyageur; included also are some exerpts of her Correspondance.
We discovered that the experience of Nerval's "promenade" equates to a quest for the past, for freedom and for Nature. He also seeks to escape mental sickness, the burden threatening his inspiration.
In George Sand's works, the "promenade" becomes an activity allowing one to overcome familial and sentimental chagrin, a means of regaining a taste for life.
In the conclusion we compared the characteristics of the theme as illustrated by both authors, and brought to light their respective peculiarities.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The object of this work consists mainly in tracing, through a formal method, the developement of the composition and publication of nerval's poetic texts verse-forms from 1835 to 1855; particularly studying his specific use of the sonnet form, which he started writing in 1841, the first examples probably dating from march to november of that year. The style of his poetic texts verse-forms published during these years are first examined; the transcription and publication of his sonnets are then inserted chronologically into the overall scheme of his texts. Thus his sonnets are present in order of their transcription and publication, with their description and analysis from different points of view (verse, strophe, poem and group of poems). His poetic style of sonnet is thus elucidated : concentration et combination. Finally, his sonnets are situated formally, and provisionally, in the overall scheme of our research of the french sonnet as published in the first-half of the nineteenth century (1800-1857). The history of the publication of this style of poem during these years is sketched out in an overall form and the results of their description, applied to a part of our corpus, and presented. Different styles of the sonnet form amongst other authors, representative of the period, are examined in comparaison to the poetic style used by nerval
