Abstract:

B. F. Mudge (1817-79), appointed the first Kansas State Geologist in 1864, served for only one year. Inexperienced, and with no chance of fulfilling the requirements of an expansive law, he was succeeded in 1865 by G. C. Swallow (1817-99). Aided by F. Hawn and the other former members of Mudge's survey, Swallow, who received a larger budget and an open-ended appointment with no specified duties, produced a more impressive report, although he was not funded in 1866. Mudge went to Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, where he became the preeminent Kansas geologist during the years 1866-70. Although better known for his fossil vertebrate collections in the Cretaceous of Western Kansas in the 1870's, Mudge made significant invertebrate collections from the Cretaceous. Building on the foundation laid by F. V. Hayden and F. B. Meek, he was able, with considerable input from Meek, to make a major contribution toward elucidating the stratigraphy of the Kansas Cretaceous.

Abstract:

AbstractFerdinand von Wrangell (1796–1870) was one of the most successful explorers of the Russian Arctic. After participating in V.M. Golovnin's circumnavigation in 1817–19, he was appointed the commander of the Kolyma group of the northeast Siberian expedition of 1820–24. Wrangell later became a hugely significant figure in the Russian Empire, serving as governor-general in Alaska, director of the Russian-American Company, and the head of the hydrographic department of the Russian Admiralty, before being made a baron and promoted to admiral. Later still he was the minister of the naval department and a member of the State Council, during which time he continued to support geographical and scientific exploration.

A checklist with synonyms, distributions, larval foodplants, and parasitoid data for the European Turkish geometrid moths is presented. The checklist includes both published and previously unpublished faunistic information. In total, 200 species are reported for the region. Seventeen new species are tabulated for the fauna of European Turkey: Charissa ambiguata (Duponchel, 1830); Eumannia oppositaria Mann, 1864; Neognopharmia stevenaria Boisduval, 1849; Alsophila aceraria (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775); A. aescularia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775); Thetidia smaragdaria (Fabricius, 1787); Cleta filacearia (Herrich-Schäffer, 1847); Idaea circuitaria (Hübner, 1819); Costaconvexa polygrammata (Borkhausen, 1794); Eupithecia extremata (Fabricius, 1787); E. insigniata (Hübner, 1790); E. silenicolata Mabille, 1867; E. subfuscata (Haworth, 1809); E. venosata (Fabricius, 1787); Orthonama vittata (Borkhausen, 1794); Rheumaptera cervinalis Scopoli, 1763; and Scotopteryx luridata (Hufnagel, 1767). Three species are new for the geometrid fauna of Turkey: Idaea muricata (Hufnagel, 1767); Scopula floslactata (Haworth, 1809) and Pasiphila chloerata (Mabille, 1870). O conto “O capitão Mendonça” foi publicado, por Machado de Assis, em abril e maio de 1870 no Jornal das famílias, aparecendo em livro em duas coletâneas organizadas por Raimundo Magalhães Jr., Contos Recolhidos (1956) e Contos fantásticos de Machado de Assis (1975). No prefácio de Contos Recolhidos, o crítico observava que “O capitão Mendonça” pertencia ao “gênero quase macabro” por tematizar a figura do autômato. A partir do diálogo promovido por Machado de Assis com a narrativa “O homem de areia” (1816-1817), do alemão E.T.A. Hoffmann, citado textualmente no conto do autor brasileiro, este estudo busca examinar as relações possíveis entre o conto machadiano e a ficção científica, gênero relacionado à literatura fantástica, que teria como “pai oficial” o romance Frankenstein de Mary Shelley, de 1818, texto que põe em evidência o desejo humano de cientificamente “decifrar e dominar a natureza”.

Abstract:

Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817–1898) was a prominent South Asian reformer of Islam who focused on the reconciliation of science and Islam in his most influential texts. This article aims to analyze the implications of science becoming the dominant discourse in nineteenth-century South Asia for the conception of Islam and religion in general. Sayyid Ahmad is an intriguing example because he actively participated in religious as well as scientific discourses since as early as the 1830s. After a concise outline of his early writings, his stances toward science and reason shall be compared with his later writings, primarily those written after 1870, to uncover the impact of the increasing influence of science in South Asia during the latter half of the nineteenth century. In his later writings, Sayyid Ahmad accomplishes a complex effort of translation, claiming mutual compatibility of science and Islam. The question of how this influences his conception of Islam and religion will be addressed, exploring whether this process should be described as a mere adoption of foreign discourse? Or does it trigger transformative effects?

Resumo: Essa dissertação aborda, estuda e debate diversos tópicos centrais sobre os usos do passado por meio da analise da construção da noção de sujeito contido nos livros didáticos de história da Colômbia de Jesús María Henao e Gerardo Arrubla, escritos por eles durante a comemoração do primeiro Centenário da independência da nação. Com esse intuito, essa pesquisa enfoca-se na forma na que eles reconstruíram a vida e figura de Policarpa Salavarrieta, heroína notável das suas narrativas por tratar-se duma das poucas figuras femininas que possuem um papel protagonístico nelas, bem como numa reconstrução do universo material onde os autores desenvolveram-se como seres humanos, nesse caso, a cidade de Bogotá, capital da Colômbia, nas últimas décadas do século XIX e na primeira do XX. A analise experimental concreta desenvolve-se ao redor da discussão e aplicação da teoria histórico-genética da cultura sobre as narrativas dos autores, bem como sobre diversas fontes secundárias escritas ou elementos da cultura material, que permitem dilucidar a forma do universo material contemporâneo deles. Portanto, trata-se dum enfoque epistemológico que procura estabelecer elos entre os processos ontogenéticos - aqueles que explicam o desenvolvimento do ser humano desde a infância desde um ponto de vista biológico e epistemológico -, e psicogenéticos - aqueles que explicam a ordem material do mundo a partir do qual cada sujeito constrói a sua própria subjetividade. Nesse sentido: a nossa idéia central é que cada um de nós constrói a sua própria idéia de história e de passado desde a infância e esses textos são um dos primeiros contatos que temos com uma área especializada em produzir e estudar discursos e conjuntos de cultura material para reconstruir o passado com o intuito de atingir as mentes dos sujeitos.
Abstract: This dissertation studies and debates central topics about the uses of the pasto Through experimental analysis, we try to reconstruct the idea of subject as presented in the Colombian history text-books written by Jesús María Henao and Gerardo Arrubla in the first decade of the XX century, in Bogotá, the country's capital, as part of the celebration the first 100 years of Colombian independence. To accomplish our goals, we focused our analysis in the figure of Policarpa Salavarrieta, the most prominent female character of their historical narrative aimed at children's education and, also, in their own material world. Our main task is to test the utility of the historic-genetic theory of culture as a way to study the process of internalization of history and memories through a lookingglass that allow us to conceive the interaction of each subject with its concrete environment and historical settings. In that context, our main goal is to explore the idea that each one of us develops its notion of "history" or "past", among, many other categories and skills, since childhood.

Abstract:

Le présent thèse cherche à explorer le statut épistémologique de la Psychiatrie. En prenant la question de la méthode (“Methodenfrage”) comme fil directeur, nous discuterons la question de savoir dans quelle mesure la Psychiatrie, entendue comme une discipline clinique, est autorisée à emprunter les principes méthodologiques en usage dans les sciences humaines. Dans ce contexte une importance capitale sera accordée à l’analyse des développements conceptuels de la Psychopathologie de langue allemande dans la période suivant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale. Le point de départ de ce travail sera l’analyse de la dichotomie introduite par Karl Jaspers entre “Erklären” (expliquer) et “Verstehen” (comprendre) ainsi que celle des limites épistémologiques de ces deux modes d’accès à l’anormalité psychique qu’est la schizophrénie. La deuxième partie de ce travail sera consacrée à l’analyse de l’élargissement sur le plan méthodologique des limites du “Verstehen” dans la psychopathologie de la schizophrénie. Dans ce cadre nous analyserons les conséquences de l’introduction de la “Situation analyse” et du concept d’“ordre” (comme principe organisateur de la vie psychique et sociale) pour la psychopathologie de la schizophrénie. A la lumière des résultats acquis nous analyserons les apports de ce développement conceptuel de la psychopathologie allemande pour les tentatives de conceptualisation des normes dans les théories psychiatriques sur la schizophrénie
This thesis explores the ways in which psychiatrists and researchers have developed new tools to deal with the unknown in psychiatric classifications. In the following four chaptersI seek to understand why the modes of thinking that dominated late nineteenth century psychiatry have proved to be durable and stable, and why the history of what is now called schizophrenia is the history of psychiatry itself.In this context, I situate my argument within the debates regarding the historiography of psychiatry, and more specifically the historiography of schizophrenia.My approach can be understood as an attempt to move away from common approaches to the history of psychiatric classifications.In my view, the influence of German psychiatry, from Griesinger’s unitary psychosis to Bleuler’s schizophrenia tells us more about psychiatry and its modes of conceptualization, than thus far recognized.Against the narratives that presuppose a direct line of development, I argue that the path starting with primäre Verrücktheit—one of the most commonly diagnosed psychic diseases in 1870s – leading to ”paranoia”—a term used as synonym for insanity by most authors in the1880s and 1890s – and ending in “dementia praecox” and schizophrenia was not a linear one.By tracing the detours followed by psychiatric research in the last three decades of the nineteenth century, I show how, paradoxically, the progress in the special nosology delayedconsiderably the future development in psychiatric theories

The surroundings of the Algiers’s citadel in the nineteenth centuryThe major works undertaken between 1817 and 1830 transformed the citadel of Algiers into a most important place of sovereignty and power, boasting different administrative, economic and religious centres. However, today, the physiognomy of the surroundings of this palace-fortress is marked by the upheaval of the French colonial period between 1830 and 1870. The creation of the Boulevard de la Victoire and the demolition, for security reasons, of the surrounding buildings, definitively altered the landscape and urban typology of the Ottoman period. This article examines the urban fabric of the ancient surroundings of the Citadel and their transformation during the nineteenth century. It traces back the development of the surroundings, and explains the reasons behind their demolition. The study tries also to give an assessment of the principle characteristics of the architectural components within their urban fabric.
