Gaudant (2011) has shown that Brachylebias Priem, 1908 is a junior synonym of Aphanius Nardo, 1827 and that therefore the new name for the Late Miocene species Brachylebias persicus Priem, 1908 is Aphanius persicus (Priem, 1908). In addition, he stated that a new name has to be assigned to the extant A. persicus (Jenkins, 1910). However, before a new species name can be assigned, it is necessary to demonstrate that the two species, currently named A. persicus, are different. Here we show that slight differences are present in the meristic characters between the fossil A. persicus (Priem, 1908)

This article analyses a new series of prices and wages stretching back to 1827 for the provinces of the Habsburg Empire. These real wage series are the first continuous and consistent indicator of changing living standards in this part of Europe during industrialization. They show that while the living standards stagnated throughout the monarchy prior to 1850s, the West (unlike the East) was able to launch onto a path of continuous growth in the second half of the century. The empire experienced little convergence onto the living standards of its neighbors and even internally the convergence r

Abstract The article explores the role of transcultural encounters for the development of the thought and philology of Shigeno Yasutsugu, an eminent Japanese scholar of history and Chinese learning in 19th-century Japan. It argues that a close look at the impact of Shigeno’s encounters with Western diplomats, Chinese scholar-officials and a German historian illuminates the richness in the biography of a scholar whom the literature has valued predominantly for his role in the introduction of “modern” Western historiography. Abstract:
Hahlo and Khan have aptly described South African law as a ‘three-layered cake’. This dissertation is not so much concerned with the ingredients of the cake, but with the Cape Supreme Court which was used to ‘bake’ the third layer, and the judges who were employed to supervise the task. However, in order t wet the appetites of the legal gourmets, an attempt has been made to analyse the ingredient of judicial precedent, and to serve it up in the form of ‘icing’.
