A current checklist of the Costa Rican cicada fauna is provided. The first Costa Rican records of Zammara calochroma Walker, 1858, Diceroprocta pusilla Davis, 1942, Diceroprocta ruatana (Distant, 1891), Ollanta modesta (Distant, 1881), Pacarina puella Davis, 1923, Pacarina schumanni Distant, 1905, Majeorona truncata Goding, 1925, Procollina medea (Stål, 1864), Carineta verna Distant, 1883, Carineta viridicollis (Germar, 1830), Herrera ancilla (Stål, 1864), Calyria cuna (Walker, 1850), Selymbria pluvialis Ramos & Wolda, 1985, and Conibosa occidentis (Walker, 1858) are provided. Diceroprocta digueti (Distant, 1906) and D. vitripennis (Say, 1830) are removed from the Costa Rican cicada fauna. The new records increase the known cicada diversity 45% bringing the total number of cicada species reported in Costa Rica to 45 species in 17 genera representing nine tribes and two subfamilies of the family Cicadidae.

This is the first in a series of rigorous nomenclatural studies of selected Diptera workers, undertaken as part of the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera (BDWD). A total of 566 genus-group names of Diptera proposed by A.-J.-B. Robineau-Desvoidy are listed, each with all originally included nominal species, method of typification, current taxonomic status, and emendations. A detailed biography of Robineau-Desvoidy is given with discussion of his works and his relationships with contemporaries. In addition, an index to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by RobineauDesvoidy (3,204) is given with bibliographic reference to each original citation. Appended to this study are a full bibliography of Robineau-Desvoidy’s works, a list of collectors on which Robineau-Desvoidy based his Diptera studies, a list of collecting localities mentioned in his Diptera works, and a reproduction of the little-known but valuable 1826 Blainville Rapport of Robineau-Desvoidy’s 1830 Essai sur les Myodaires. The Diptera genus-group names of Camillo Rondani are reviewed and annotated. A total of 601 nomenclaturally available genus-group names in 82 families of Diptera are listed alphabetically. For each name the following are given: author, year and page of original publication, originally included species [and first included species if none were originally included], type species and method of fixation, current status of the name, family placement, and a list of any emendations of it that have been found in the literature. Remarks are given to clarify nomenclatural or taxonomic information. In addition, an index is provided to all the species-group names of Diptera proposed by Rondani (1,236, of which 1,183 are available) with bibliographic reference to each original citation. En 1831, la Compagnie de Jésus envoie trois missionnaires en Syrie ottomane. Conformément aux vœux du Saint-Siège, les jésuites entendent affermir les Eglises catholiques orientales et lutter contre les missions protestantes. Après 1850, ils reçoivent aussi le soutien de la France qui voit dans leur action le moyen d'étendre son influence en Orient. En Syrie, les jésuites s'installent au Mont-Liban, puis à Beyrouth et Sai͏̈da. Etroitement surveillés par le clergé oriental, soumis aux exigences de leurs protecteurs (pachas, consuls, émirs), ils se consacrent surtout à l'enseignement et au soin spirituel des catholiques qui vivent à proximité de leurs résidences, et, à partir de 1860, abandonnent quasiment tout apostolat en direction des autres chrétiens d'Orient ou des musulmans. Du séminaire-collège de Ghazir qu'ils ont ouvert en 1846, sont sortis bien des cadres des Eglises catholiques orientales de la fin du XIXe siècle. Par la création d'instituts enseignants féminins destinés à instruire les filles, les jésuites ont aussi contribué à modifier la place de la femme dans la société orientale. Par leur apostolat, ils ont enfin encouragé les fidèles catholiques orientaux à faire corps autour de leur clergé, et ont ainsi fortifié les Eglises catholiques orientales qui deviendront, au XXe siècle, des communautés politiques
In 1831, Jesus' Company sent three missionaries to Syria. In accordance with the wishes of the Holy See, the Jesuits intend to establish the Catholic Churches of the Orient and also to fight against protestant missions. After 1850 they also got France's support; it provided the mission with a mean for extending its influence in the Orient. In Syria, the Jesuits settled in Mont-Lebanon, then in Beirut and Saida. Closely scrutinized by the oriental clergy, subjected to the demands of their protectors (pashas, consuls, emirs) they particularly devoted themselves to teaching and to the spiritual care of Catholics living near their residences and from 1860 they nearly gave up all apostolate to the other Christians or Muslims of the Orient. At the end of the 19th century, many clerics of the oriental Catholic Churches had graduated from Ghazir's college-seminary which the Jesuits opened in 1846. Through the creation of communities of nuns who devoted themselves to the girls' education, the Jesuits had a part in the transformation of the women's role in the Oriental society. By their apostolic work, they encouraged the Oriental Catholics to assemble around their clergy and supported the Oriental-Catholics Churches which became political communities during the 20th century

Au XIXe siècle, les catholiques font face à la naissance de la "littérature industrielle", manifestation de la "proto-histoire" de la culture médiatique. Dénonçant violemment les ouvrages et mettant une large partie des Lettres françaises à l'index, l'Eglise et les éditeurs confessionnels mettent également en place un système de distribution d'une paralittérature conforme aux préceptes religieux. Dans les années 1840 et 1850, s'im̀plantent massivement en France, en Belgique et au Québec des bibliothèques paroissiales dédiées aux lectures du peuple. D'un pays à l'autre, et notamment grâce à l'archiconfrérie de l'Œuvre des bons livres fondée à Bordeaux, circulent méthodes d'encadrement du lectorat populaire et collections d'édifiants. Ce dispositif alliant orthodoxie du livre et orthopraxie de la lecture témoigne de l'état précoce de veille de l'Eglise catholique dans la sphère culturelle. Il renseigne également sur les processus de métamorphoses de la censure à l'époque contemporaine
In the XIXth century, catholics face the birth of the "industrial literature", manifestation of the "proto-history" of the media culture. Violently condemning French literature and registering its productions in the Index librorum prohibitorum, the Church, with publishers, work out on a catholic paraliterature's distribution system. In the years 1840 and 1850's, parochial libraries are built in France, Belgium and Quebec for popular reading. From a country to another, with the mediation of the Archibroterhood of the Good Books from Bordeaux, catholics share librarian's methods and books collections. This device combining orthodoxy of the book and orthopraxy of reading testifies to the Church's awareness in cultural issues. It also shows censoring metamorphoses, in contemporaneous times

La presente investigación aborda el momento en que emerge la novelística de Alberto Blest Gana como expresión clara –tanto para su autor, como para su recepción crítica– de una literatura nacional, que configura y legitima sus propios temas, modos de representación y objetivos. En consecuencia, mi indagación se instala en el punto de articulación de dos problemas generales de los estudios literarios, específicamente en relación con la historia de la literatura chilena; a saber, una delimitación funcional y explícita de la relación entre literatura y sociedad a partir de las configuraciones textuales producidas por Alberto Blest Gana, en tanto cristalizaciones de un modelo hegemónico de representación, y la comprensión de ciertas escenas de costumbres, ya no como meros requisitos formales del tipo discursivo convocado por las novelas de dicho autor, sino que, a su vez, como portadoras y proyectoras de disputas y negociaciones ideológicas, en búsqueda de la consolidación de un orden social, por una parte, y de “lo que podríamos llamar el sujeto-ciudadano nacional estéticamente constituido” , por la otra.

Cette thèse montre le rôle de l’Hôtel Lambert, parti politique dirigé par le prince A. J. Czartoryski depuis Paris, et de son agence, fondée par Michał Czaykowski, à Constantinople, dans la lutte pour la liberté de la Pologne. À travers la comparaison des actions politiques menées par ces deux personnages depuis la France et l’Empire ottoman dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, se dessine l’analyse des modus-operandi de l’Hôtel Lambert, guidé par l’espoir de reconquérir l’indépendance de la patrie opprimée et de préserver la polonité à l’étranger. Cette recherche est complétée par l’étude de la politique d’accueil de la Sublime Porte, vis-à-vis des réfugiés de la Révolution hongroise qui cherchent asile sur le territoire ottoman, dans laquelle la conversion à l’islam de certains de ces exilés tient une place importante. De plus, l’analyse du transfert culturel dans les deux pays d’accueil et de la situation socio-économique des réfugiés polonais dans l’Empire ottoman permet de donner une vision approfondie de la construction des interactions de ces exilés dans leurs nouvelles sociétés. Un autre versant de cette recherche est centré sur la création de la colonie polonaise dans l’Empire ottoman, laboratoire social de la polonité en exil
This thesis shows the role of l’Hôtel Lambert, political party led by Prince A. J. Czartoryski from Paris, and his agency, founded by Michał Czaykowski, in Constantinople, in the struggle for Poland’s freedom. Through the comparison of the political actions taken by these two characters from France and the Ottoman Empire in the first half of the 19th century, emerges the analysis of the modus operandi of l’Hôtel Lambert, guided by the hope of reconquering independence of the oppressed homeland and to preserve “la polonité” abroad. This research is complemented by the study of the reception policy of the Sublime Porte, vis-à-vis the refugees of the Hungarian Revolution who seek asylum on the Ottoman territory, in which the conversion to Islam of some of these exiles holds an important place. Moreover, the analysis of the cultural transfer in the two host countries and of the socio-economic situation of the Polish refugees in the Ottoman Empire gives an in-depth view of the construction of the interactions of these exiles in their new societies. Another aspect of this research is centered on the creation of the Polish colony in the Ottoman Empire, social laboratory of “la polonité” in exile

This chapter examines the ways early nineteenth century authors framed piracy as an instrument of state growth, anti-colonial resistance, as well as a rationale for imperial expansion and intervention in the Americas in William Gilmore Simms’s The Yemassee (1835), John Brougham’s 1857 play Columbus, El Filibustero!, James Fenimore Cooper’s The Red Rover: A Tale (1829) and The Water Witch; or, The Skimmer of the Seas (1830), as well as El Filibustero: Novela Historica (1864), written by Yucatec author Eligio Ancona. In a climate of rapid national expansion, nineteenth century authors used the pirate as a central character to plot national(ist) narratives. Given piracy’s relationship to both state-building and anti-colonial enterprises, as well as piracy’s capacity to both facilitate and threaten property ownership, piracy helps us understand the radical and repressive regimes of American power. The historical novels examined in this chapter are interested in the shadowy origins of the American nation-state, as much as they are with the potentially conflicted present and future of these nation-states.
