Abstract:
Abstract A total of 79 Trichoptera species (43 genera, 16 families) were found in the Javorníky Mts. (Czech Republic), including two Carpathian species, Chaetopteryx polonica Dziedzielewicz, 1889 and Potamophylax carpathicus (Dziedzielewicz, 1912). Two further species, Rhyacophila mocsaryi Klapálek, 1898 and Rhyacophila philopotamoides McLachlan, 1879, have, until recently, only been found in the Carpathian Mts. In addition, eight species that occur infrequently or only locally in the Czech Republic were found, Synagapetus moselyi (Ulmer, 1938), Hydroptila angulata Mosely, 1922, Wormaldia pulla (McLachlan, 1878), Plectrocnemia brevis McLachlan, 1871, Tinodes unicolor (Pictet, 1834), Hydropsyche fulvipes (Curtis, 1834), Beraeamyia hrabei Mayer, 1937 and Ernodes vicinus (McLachlan, 1879). Several of these species are listed in the Red List of threatened invertebrates of the Czech Republic (one as endangered, one vulnerable and seven near threatened).

Abstract:
A new genus and two new species of Xyelidae Newman, 1834 (Hymenoptera Linnaeus, 1758), Platyxyela tenuis sp. nov. and Scleroxyela daohugouensis gen. et sp. nov. are described and illustrated from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou Beds of Ningcheng, Inner Mongolia, China. Platyxyela tenuis sp. nov. (Xyelinae Newman, 1834, Liadoxyelini Rasnitsyn, 1966) can be distinguished from its congeners by short forewing length and ovipositor sheath strongly narrowed toward acute apex. Scleroxyela daohugouensis gen. et sp. nov. is placed within Macroxyelinae Ashmead, 1898, Xyeleciini Benson, 1945 based on pterositigma completely sclerotised and costal space sclerotised before ptrostigma, 1-Rs half as long as 1-M, and 1m-cu short. It is the first recorded species of Xyeleciini in Daohugou Beds. Furthermore, an updated key of identification of subfamilies and tribes of Xyelidae is provided. Our findings of new morphological data provide insights into the early evolution of Hymenoptera, as well as effectively enrich our understanding of the diversity of Xyelidae in the Mesozoic.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the study of a network composed with MPs of Vaucluse from 1870 to 1898, gathered around Alfred Naquet and his political friends. We will try to show how this network works, how it was built and got rooted from 1870 thanks to electoral victories, then structured by personal loyalties, exchanges of influence and the use of friendship vocabulary. This was before it got progressively destroyed and isolated from the local political scene from 1888 to 1898, questionned first by the engagement from one part of its membersin the boulangisme, then by their implication in the Panama scandal. Throught the study of this network, we search to apprehend the relation of clientelism and loyalty between the MPs of Vaucluse, their local relay and simple citizens. The second event that caused the end of Naquet's network is the Panama scandal, more precisely the "Arton Affaire". Being accused of receiving money for their vote when a law in favour of the Panama company is voted, some members of the network are being prosecuted. The scandal also reveals links between businessmen and political men, especially throw the société centrale de la dynamite, created by Alfred Nobel, and raise the question of the existence of a group of pressure composed by politcal and business men. In the same way, the defence strategies of the electives facing corruption accusation, the deviances and normative debates around this theme will be studied regarding this network

Abstract:
In reaction to a dull, never-changing Royal Academy, and announcing movements focused on sheer aesthetic beauty, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood is often seen as wrapped in a long, hazy, melancholy reverie. William Morris’s political commitment spares him such labelling, but Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his disciples are often associated with past-obsessed aesthetics. Taking a stand against such a bias, this dissertation emphasises the political aspects of their work, and the scope of their philosophical and ideological commitments. By interweaving a cultural and historicist perspective with the formal and aesthetic sides of their art, this study of a representative set of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and poems seeks to identify the political attitudes underlying their art. Through the prisms of 19th century theoretical texts and reflections by thinkers of modernity, counter-modernity, and alter-modernity, this analysis probes the idea that rifts and faultlines represent both displacements and a creative principle, while simultaneously opening the way to a permanent challenging of dominant ideology and offering an alternative to subversion. The artistic twist on the faultline concept makes the Pre-Raphaelites craftsmen of a quiet revolution, meant to effect a deep transformation of Victorian society and art

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present work named “Traditional illustrated tale: A contribution” intends to reflect about the legacy of tales in Illustration and oral tradition, carrying out an illustration project. The investigation began in the origins of tale to contextualize its cultural roots and the persistence of certain narratives over the ages. With the famous collections of the brothers Grimm in the beginning of century XIX, traditional tales where recognized for their historical value as a reflection of people’s identity. This nationalist character associated to the Romantic Movement, appealed to several authors that collected tales in their countries. With the turn of the century there is a golden age in children's book illustrations and many authors turn to traditional tales has a great source with creative potential. The appeal of this illustrated books it´s in the diversity of stories and fantastical elements that bring to live the imagination of children and adults alike. I join this book illustration tradition with my practical work, by choosing a Portuguese traditional tale. This choice had in mind the disclosure of the Portuguese oral tradition unowned to me. Regarding the tale, the theoretical work consists of a systematization of research on the traditional tale and the contributions of the artists who illustrated it. There is also the theoretical foundation that accompanies the practical work, the influences, justification of stylistic options and artistic movements. The last part of the work is dedicated to the illustration project. I describe all the experience in a report of the process, reflecting about the difficulties, the learning and considerations on the illustration experiment. I present the different fases of the process from the sketches to the exploration of materials and their final result in the form of a model. Theory and practice complement each other to establish my course throughout this year of research and work and from which results the present dissertation

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Men make their own history, but not of their own free will; not under circumstances they themselves have chosen but under the given and inherited circumstances with which they are directly confronted.’ Of few can Marx’s truism be truer than of William Ewart Gladstone. His epic public career first in office in 1834, last in 1894-confronted the prime of Britain as the first industrial nation. The agenda of free trade and imperialism was dictated by forces far beyond the control of individuals acting as such. Yet the interpretation and execution of the agenda was achieved by the decisions and actions of individuals and explained through their speeches and writings. In this interpretation, execution, and explanation, Gladstone’s career holds a central place. In the process through which the British governing class came to terms with its new commercial and industrial destiny, Gladstone was a vital agent.

Woods, Gordon. "British Reception of Periodicity." In Early Responses to the Periodic System. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190200077.003.0012.

Abstract:
The discovery of periodicity in the properties of the elements and its connection to their atomic weights is one of the most important advances in nineteenth-century chemistry. This chapter will consider the tables of John Newlands (1837–1898) and William Odling (1829–1921), which preceded that of Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834–1907). Mendeleev’s table was published in 1869, prior to his being aware of the UK precedents of his tabulation. The major portion of this chapter will extend the ideas advanced by Stephen Brush in The Reception of Mendeleev’s Periodic Law in America and Britain but will restrict itself to the dissemination of the periodicity concept within the United Kingdom. This will be monitored by recording its appearances in textbooks and examination papers, and in a wider context, by extracting data from Google Books. The periodic table has a rich history since its inception. It has evolved into many shapes, and indeed dimensions, yet retaining its essential periodic underpinning. In the United Kingdom it is seen as a “table,” whereas the French prefer “classification” and the Germans and Russians “system.” Mendeleev himself referred to his periodic law in his Faraday Lecture and never used the term “table,” thus it is ironic that his fame is linked to words that he appears never to have uttered. The arrangement of the elements in rows and columns is seen as a table, but why label it periodic? A related, more familiar word to non-chemists is periodical, normally referring to a magazine that appears at regular time intervals. Google Books is a powerful modern tool for investigating the usage of selected words or phrases over selected time intervals. The writer chose to use its advanced search for books in the English language. This meant that sources other than British, notably North American, are also included but the observed patterns are probably true for British books. The data compare the number of times the terms periodic table, periodic law, periodic classification, and periodic acid occurred in five-year intervals between 1870 and 1919.
