Abstract:
The holotype of Nothris flabellifer Rebel, 1896 kept in the “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History (Bucharest, Romania) has been examined and taxonomic position of that species, described from Morocco, was specified. The species was transferred to the genus Anarsia Zeller on the base of morphological characters of the male genitalia: Anarsia flabellifer (Rebel, 1896), comb. n. Since Nothris flabellifer is the type species of Dolerotricha Meyrick, a new generic synonymy has been established: Anarsia Zeller, 1839 = Dolerotricha Meyrick, 1925, syn. n.

Abstract:
Four oceanographic cruises were carried out between April 2011 and May 2013 on the continental slope of the southern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) in a depth range of 290 to 1200 m on board the R/V JUSTO SIERRA. A total of 91 trawls covered a total swept area of 170.49 hectares. We recorded 177 fish species belonging to 80 families. Fifteen species extended their distribution into the south of the gulf and 37 increased their depth ranges. Five species could have commercial importance: Aphanopuscarbo Lowe, 1839; Hydrolagusmirabilis (Collett, 1904); Helicolenusdactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809); Lophiusgastrophysus Miranda Ribeiro, 1915, and Merlucciusalbidus (Mitchill, 1818). The most abundant species were Polymixialowei Günther, 1859; Parasudistruculenta (Goode & Bean, 1896); M.albidus, Chlorophthalmusagassizi Bonaparte, 1840; Dibranchusatlanticus Peters, 1876; Nezumiaaequalis (Günther, 1878); Yarrellablackfordi Goode & Bean, 1896; and Laemonemabarbatulum Goode & Bean, 1883. High values of fish species richness, diversity, and evenness were registered throughout the study area. A high percentage of the fish species (97%) collected during this project are distributed in the entire GoM. Most of the species showed a wide depth distribution; however, a vertical zonation of species can be observed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 2009 and 2010, we examined the effects of different tillage systems on springtail communities. The study was established on the experimental field, in which tillage and no-tillage cultivation had been conducted since 1975, of the Research Station of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences’ Department of Agronomy, located at Chylice, near Warsaw (52005’N, 20033’E).The treatments considered were conventional tillage with a mouldboard plough (CT) and no-tillage (NT), and each method was divided between with and without liming. In 2009, the fields were sown with winter wheat, and spring barley was planted the following year. During both growing seasons, collembolan densities were higher under NT than CT, but the reverse was true after harvest. However, the time of the season had a significant effect on collembolan densities not only over the whole study period but also in particular years. Additionally, in fields that were limed, collembolan densities varied, with no clear trend. The dominant collembolan species in the CT and NT fields was Isotoma viridis Bourlet, 1839, while Paristoma notabilis (Schäffer, 1896) was prevalent when liming was used. The relative proportion of each of the two species in springtail communities was at least 20 percent. The species diversity of collembolan communities was similar in both study years, and it was higher in CT than in NT fields. The study was financially supported as part of the MNiSW project No. N N305171136.

Abstract:
Australia has the highest historically recorded rate of mammalian extinction in the world, with 34 terrestrial species declared extinct since European colonization in 1788. Among Australian mammals, rodents have been the most severely affected by these recent extinctions; however, given a sparse historical record, the scale and timing of their decline remain unresolved. Using museum specimens up to 184 y old, we generate genomic-scale data from across the entire assemblage of Australian hydromyine rodents (i.e., eight extinct species and their 42 living relatives). We reconstruct a phylogenomic tree for these species spanning ∼5.2 million years, revealing a cumulative total of 10 million years (>10%) of unique evolutionary history lost to extinction within the past ∼150 y. We find no evidence for reduced genetic diversity in extinct species just prior to or during decline, indicating that their extinction was extremely rapid. This suggests that populations of extinct Australian rodents were large prior to European colonization, and that genetic diversity does not necessarily protect species from catastrophic extinction. In addition, comparative analyses suggest that body size and biome interact to predict extinction and decline, with larger species more likely to go extinct. Finally, we taxonomically resurrect a species from extinction, Gould’s mouse (Pseudomys gouldii Waterhouse, 1839), which survives as an island population in Shark Bay, Western Australia (currently classified as Pseudomys fieldi Waite, 1896). With unprecedented sampling across a radiation of extinct and living species, we unlock a previously inaccessible historical perspective on extinction in Australia. Our results highlight the capacity of collections-based research to inform conservation and management of persisting species.

An updated checklist of Croatian flesh flies is presented based on the literature, on material collected from 2004 to 2017, and on specimens in museum collections. The checklist comprises 22 genera and 148 species (two left unnamed), 105 of which are represented by new Croatian records. Twenty-five species are recorded from Croatia with certainty for the first time:Amobiapelopei(Rondani, 1859),ApodacraseriemaculataMacquart, 1854,Craticulinatabaniformis(Fabricius, 1805),Macronychiastriginervis(Zetterstedt, 1838),Metopiacampestris(Fallén, 1810),MiltogrammabrevipilaVilleneuve, 1911,MiltogrammaibericaVilleneuve, 1912,Miltogrammaoestracea(Fallén, 1820),MiltogrammapunctataMeigen, 1824,Oebalia cylindrica(Fallén, 1810),PhyllotelespictipennisLoew, 1844,Senotainiaconica(Fallén, 1810),Taxigrammahilarella(Zetterstedt, 1844),Taxigrammastictica(Meigen, 1830),Agriamonachae(Kramer, 1908),Nyctialugubris(Macquart, 1843), Blaesoxipha (Blaesoxipha) aurulenta Rohdendorf, 1937, Blaesoxipha (Blaesoxipha) batilligera Séguy, 1941, Blaesoxipha (Blaesoxipha) plumicornis (Zetterstedt, 1859), Sarcophaga (Helicophagella) okaliana (Lehrer, 1975), Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) amita Rondani, 1860, Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) ancilla Rondani, 1865, Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) pseudobenaci (Baranov, 1942), Sarcophaga (Myorhina) lunigera Böttcher, 1914 and Sarcophaga (Stackelbergeola) mehadiensis Böttcher, 1912.Taxigrammahilarella,Nyctialugubris,Agriamonachae, Blaesoxipha (Blaesoxipha) aurulenta and Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) amita are recorded from Southeast Europe with certainty for the first time. The species Sarcophaga (Sarcophaga) hennigi Lehrer, 1978 is omitted from the list, as previous records from Croatia are shown to be based on an erroneous synonymy withSarcophaganovakiBaranov, 1941 (= Sarcophaga (Sarcophaga) croatica Baranov, 1941). Blaesoxipha (Blaesoxipha) rufipes (Macquart, 1839) could not be confirmed from Croatia and is not included in the checklist. Zveda, Danielle. Paris 8, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA081435.

Full text
Abstract:
S. Peirce
This thesis is an epistemological study which establishes a parallel between the sign models and the communication models that inspired roman jakobson when he created his functions' model ( linguistics and poetics, 1958/1960) and the functions model itself. The reappraisal by jakobson of the three functions of the organon's model of buhler is analysed. Buhler, the psychologist, analyses in depth the expressivity of the addresser's personality. Jakobson, the linguist, prefers to study the function of poetic language. A parallel between the functions' model of jakobson and some notions of the russian formalism, the prague circle, ogden & richards, ferdinand de saussure and charles sanders peirce is presented in the thesis. In relation to process models of communication, in the years 1940-1960 especially in the united states, such models were created by engineers (shanon & weaver), political scientists (laswell), psycholinguistics (osgood & shramm), social psychologists (newcomb), sociologists (berelson) and communication's researchers (gerbner). From the foregoing, jakobson prefers the mathematical models of communication, systematic and linear models. The circular communications models of the psycholinguists (osgood & shramm) who introduced the notion of feedback were frequently cited by roman jakobson. Therefore, they are do not form the basis of his function's model presented in "linguistics and poetics". Jakobson had already presented a rough sketch of his function's model at the interdisciplinary conference of anthropologists and linguists that took place in 1962 (indiana university). Until 1968, roman jakobson remained rooted in the model inspired by the linear model of the engineersfrom the early fifties. The synthesis that jakobson used in creating his model was by fusing the communication model of the engineers shanon & weaver and the model of karl buhler, together with the concepts that roman jakobson accumulated during his life (from the theories of the russian formalism, the prague circle, ogden & richards's ferdinand de saussure's and charles sanders peirce's theories)

Abstract:
The differences between several interpretations of an incomplete work are sometimes considerable. What allows such differences? Who are they from? What are the motivations of their authors? The observation of the interpretative choices facing incompletion reveals extremely varied positions. From an attitude of extreme devotion, which consists in not intervening on the score and in playing the work as it is, to a “reorganization” which makes it an other work, room to manoeuvre seems infinite. Such interpretative choices come from various actors of musical life: publishers, musicologists, performers, conductors, artistic directors, composers. . . Sometimes, these categories overlap (when, for instance the conductor works as a composer), and the borders between the ones and the others become blurred. Besides, the motivations of the interpreters are not always purely musical, they can also be cultural, commercial or even political. The ability of an unfinished work to spark off such surprising results is due to its lack of the same « safeguards » benefitting a finished work: a beginning, an end and, in between, a continuity of speech. Thus, more creative imagination is required from the interpreters in such cases, and the absence of clearly defined limits is felt as an additional freedom. As a result, the questioning of such a work is a never-ending process, as one person’s solution will often be undone by the next: every artist, every period has its own contribution to the knowledge of unfinished work. The construction of a “final version” seems endless and discussion on what can be made out of it seems to remain open for ever and ever

Abstract:
Harriet Taylor, Emma Wedgwood and Ellen Ternan, three mostly silent victorian women, are the centre of my present work. I focused on their engaged contribution to the lives and philosophic, scientific and literary production of John Stuart Mill, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens, in this order. Written according to a Gender Studies approach, within a wider Cultural Studies frame, the study aims to stress the influence of these women from a new angle. It takes into account individual initiative, and also the way victorian culture and values restrained their action, in the period ranging from 1837 to 1901, evaluating the negotiation undertaken in each case, to outstand their own voice, successfully or not. The thesis allows a detailed approach to the outstanding issues at stake at the time and in each case. In the first one, difficulty to publish stands out, allowing an attempt to justify the choice of invisibility; in the second case, I stress the married woman’s role in a family environment, seen as a life project, undermining or denying a more comprehensive participation in public, artistic or professional life; in the third one, I search for evidence of part taking in background activities, such as proof reading or public readings coaching, and also an evaluation of an informal marriage implications in mid‑victorian society. Beyond the three cases studied, the thesis approaches some of the main features of the victorian era, namely the impact of the legislation approved in the same period, underlining its powerful outcome in female population daily life. Furthermore, publishing conditions in the daily press and the press in general, the values behind women’s role in the family, as well as behaviour and perspectives of public intervention. Apart from the constraints female population had to face in the same period. The Conclusion focuses on the female condition, or should one write conditions, since deep differences are stressed, either of economic and social status, or place and cultural ground, namely. These influenced individual experience, in an environment known by its tensions and contradictions, but also open to innovation and public debate.

Abstract:
This chapter corrects the long-held assumption that the form began with modernist blockbusters and instead suggests that modernist writers revised a vibrant regionalist tradition to their own uses. It trace the development of the cycle from a regionalist tradition often marked by an attention to the experiences of women and those living on the fringes of America. Nineteenth-century village sketch narratives, such as Caroline Kirkland’s A New Home, Who'll Follow? or, Glimpses of Western Life (1839), served to incorporate towns, distanced from cultural centers, into the national imaginary. These cycles depend upon the construction of a restricted geographic terrain to contain and ground the narratives; in other words, they stake out “limited locality” to encompass the stories. Sarah Orne Jewett’s The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio (1919) continue to question the extent to which geographic proximity produces communal affiliation, which is often imagined as an antidote to the poisons of industrialization.
