Abstract:
The final stadium larvae of Huosoma latiloba (Yu, Yang & Bu, 2008) and Huosoma tinctipenne (McLachlan, 1894) from Yunnan Province, China are described and illustrated for the first time, with diagnostic differences between the two species identified. While no morphological characters separating the adults of this genus, and the closely related western Palaearctic Pyrrhosoma Charpentier, 1840 have been found, the larvae of these two genera do show differences which are discussed here.

Abstract:
Three species of harpacticoids are herein recorded from the zooplankton of Rodadero beach, Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia. Samples were collected from the littoral zone, mainly at inshore areas covered by mangrove vegetation and in an adjacent oyster bank. One of them, Laophonte cornuta Philippi, 1840 is new to the Colombian harpacticoid fauna, the other two species: Distioculus minor (Scott T., 1894) and Microsetella norvegica (Boeck, 1865) are new reports to the Magdalena department. This is the first illustrated record confirming their presence in Colombia and Magdalena, northern Colombia. Comparative morphological comments and illustrations of these species are also provided to document this report.

Abstract:
A magyar rendészeti jogtörténetben kiemelkedő jelentőséggel bír a mezei rendőrség, hiszen az első rendőrségi törvény a 1840. évi IX. törvénycikk volt a mezei rendőrségről. A későbbi, 1894.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Summary Laura Soames (1840–1895) came to the attention of the teaching and phonetics professions through her work in applying phonetic principles to the teaching of reading and to the pronunciation of English and foreign languages. Lauded by many European phoneticians, she was despised by Henry Sweet – much to his discredit. Her publications, especially the Introduction to Phonetics (English, French and German) (1891) and The Child’s Key to Reading (1894) reveal a capacity to simplify the more technical expositions of phonetic theory in order to achieve a popular and readable exposition of the subject. Together with a number of other phoneticians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she represents the bridge between the work of Henry Sweet (1845–1912) and Daniel Jones (1881–1967).

Wright, Barbara Irene. "La bête humaine : an examination of the problems inherent in the process of adaptation from novel to film." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26943.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis the process of adaptation from novel to film is examined. La Bête humaine by Emile Zola and the film version by Jean Renoir provide specific examples. The starting point is the assumption, often made by cinema audiences, that the film should be "faithful" to the novel upon which it is based. A statement made by Renoir regarding his efforts to be true to what he describes as the "spirit of the book" is quoted to illustrate the prevalence of this attitude. Novel and film are then compared in order to test Renoir's claim to fidelity. What is revealed are the differences between the two. Through an examination of character, action, and space some of the reasons for the director's departure from the novel begin to emerge and it becomes increasingly clear that Renoir was obliged to adopt a different approach. Theme and form are then examined and the organic nature of their relationship suggested. Finally, the departure of the film from the novel is traced to the very different ways in which the two media function — linearity in the written medium as opposed to simultaneity in the cinematic medium — and the indelible nature of the association of theme and form is confirmed. In conclusion, the view that the media should and do correspond is found to be mistaken, and Renoir's statement is re-evaluated and assessed as an attempt, by a director sensitive to the public's insistence on fidelity, to disarm criticism.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at studying three cinematographic adaptations of Zola' s novel, the human beast: Martin du Gard unpublished screenplay (1933), Renoir's film (The human beast, 1938) and Lang's (Human desire, 1954). The thesis consists of two parts. The first one is a genetic analysis of the different reamaining drafts. The first chapter deals with martin du gard's cinematigraphic ideas. In the second one, the differences between Renoir's drafts and his film have been listed to determine which scenes have been rewritten. In the third chapter we have shown how the scriptwriters (hayes, boehm) progressively distanciated themselves with renoir's model and how lang, through his film direction, tried to assert his personal vision of Zola's novel. The second part of the thesis is a comparative study of the french adaptations only. We have established the differences between the story and the narration in the first chapter and between the characters in the second chapter in order to find out the methods of adaptation characterising Martin du Gard and Renoir in the last chapter we have shown how both authors tool great liberties with the novel so as to be more faithful to their personal aesthetic ideas. Therefore, through a study of cases, the aim of the thesis is not to propose a theory of adaptation but to analyse different types of praxis, using to this purpose the. .

Full text
Abstract:
The literary friendship between Maxime Du Camp and Gustave Flaubert developed against the tumultuous second half of the 19th Century. Those times of triumphant middle class values dealt a harsh blow to the glorious image of the romantic writer In the meantime, the literary world evolves both in its structure and its way of functioning by changing the work of the writer. Du Camp and Flaubert, like other men of letters of their generation, had no other choice but to reconsider their condition. They brought their answers in a different, even an opposing fashion, through an extensive dialogue which developed over almost forty years - ultimately raising the fundamental question : what is a writer ? Critics generally too hastily regarded the relation between Flaubert and Du Camp, opposing the former, seen as a model of the true artist, with the latter, who was reduced to the rank of cynical and envious social climber. To revise this somewhat prejudiced judgement, initially we wil analyse their correspondence which gives us a first insight into two personalities that take form progressively, and which reveals a dual quest for literary identity. For in fact, the exceptional aspect of this difficult friendship which confronted two literary figures, are the ramifications which can be seen in their works. This will be our second level of analysis. Finally, we will consider how the matter of (re)creation of literary works is embedded in the story of this relation. Our chronological study wil highlight the degree of reality and rewriting, of truth and fantasy, of sincere outpourings and possible insincerity in this relationship

In order to discover the turning point between traditional and new education in later Ching Dynasty, and to synthesize the context of education and life of new intellectuals at that time, this study focuses on the experiences of the pioneers of new education during 1840-1894. Therefore, seven famous figures educated at the new western schools were selected to analyze: Yung Wing, Ma Xiang-Bo, Ma Jian-Zhong, Wu Ting-Fang, Yan Fu, Ho Kai, and Jeme Tien-Yow. Their educational and career experiences were analyzed from five dimensions: background, motives, institutions, educational process, and career development. The conclusions of this study are as follows: i. As to the background, those factors such as living in the southeastern coastal areas, belonging to the lower class, and believing the Christian religion would offer more opportunities for people to take new western education. ii. As to the motives, there wasn’t the one common reason for pioneers to choose new western education. iii. As to the institutions, it is found that those western schooling pioneers taking extended from the primary level to higher one, and most of them were run by Christian churches. iv. As to educational process, it is found that (1) more than half of the pioneers had some experiences of traditional education; (2) when tuition fees were paid by the sponsors, who would influenced the pioneers’ education choices; (3) with the process modernization in China, the manpower demand of industry specialists would need more than that of liberal arts. v. As to career development, it is revealed that: (1) personal relational network is one of decisive factors to the career development of those pioneers, especially in the Qing’s government; (2) their development in politics would relate to the attitude of the senior officers charging the international affairs in the central government and the admissibility of the society; owing to their academic degrees and competences, those pioneers have more chances and experiences to engage in the new western education; (4) based on their cross-culture experiences and awareness of the differences between the West and the East, most of pioneers had transformed the western thoughts into China by ways of running newspaper, translations or writings.

Abstract:
Since 1883, when Theodor Graf (1840–1903) exhibited in Vienna a collection of Late Antique textiles from Egypt, a new trend in collecting antiquities was born. In the next decades, thousands of such textiles got to museums and private collections throughout the world. Some treated them as curiosities, others as examples of ancient craft to serve educational purposes, still others valued them as objects that enriched the knowledge of the daily life and culture in the centuries of the transformation of the ancient civilization. One of the oldest collections of this kind in Poland is an assembly of 52 textiles acquired in 1893 by professor Józef Łepkowski (1826–1894) for the Archaeological Cabinet of the Jagiellonian University (currently the Jagiellonian University Museum). The paper presents the Archaeological Cabinet’s collection of textiles on a broader background of the 19th-century interest in this specific kind of objects.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter analyzes Brahms’s folksong settings “Ach Gott, wie weh thut Scheiden” and “Mir ist ein schöns brauns Maidelein” (WoO 33, Nos. 17 and 24), and sheds light on Brahms’s comparison of a range of sixteenth- through nineteenth-century sources for their texts and melodies. In contrast with collections by F. M. Böhme (published in 1877 and 1893−1894) that obscured the transmission of these poems and melodies, Brahms carefully untangled their provenance and reacted to other nineteenth-century arrangements, as suggested by his annotations in personal copies of Forster’s Frische teutsche Liedlein (1539−1556), Arnold’s Deutsche Volkslieder aus alter und neuer Zeit (ca. 1860−1870), Tappert’s 12 alte deutsche Lieder (1867), and the Deutsche Lieder mit ihren Original-Weisen by Kretzschmer and Zuccalmaglio (1838−1840). After this thorough research, Brahms combined modern melodic variants with courtly love poetry in WoO 33, creating new musical arrangements that express longing, separation, and fidelity in the text.
