Mottet, Annie. "Martin du Gard, Renoir, Lang et La Bête humaine : la fabrique d'une adaptation." Paris 1, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA010572.
Full textThis thesis aims at studying three cinematographic adaptations of Zola' s novel, the human beast: Martin du Gard unpublished screenplay (1933), Renoir's film (The human beast, 1938) and Lang's (Human desire, 1954). The thesis consists of two parts. The first one is a genetic analysis of the different reamaining drafts. The first chapter deals with martin du gard's cinematigraphic ideas. In the second one, the differences between Renoir's drafts and his film have been listed to determine which scenes have been rewritten. In the third chapter we have shown how the scriptwriters (hayes, boehm) progressively distanciated themselves with renoir's model and how lang, through his film direction, tried to assert his personal vision of Zola's novel. The second part of the thesis is a comparative study of the french adaptations only. We have established the differences between the story and the narration in the first chapter and between the characters in the second chapter in order to find out the methods of adaptation characterising Martin du Gard and Renoir in the last chapter we have shown how both authors tool great liberties with the novel so as to be more faithful to their personal aesthetic ideas. Therefore, through a study of cases, the aim of the thesis is not to propose a theory of adaptation but to analyse different types of praxis, using to this purpose the. .

Full textThe literary friendship between Maxime Du Camp and Gustave Flaubert developed against the tumultuous second half of the 19th Century. Those times of triumphant middle class values dealt a harsh blow to the glorious image of the romantic writer In the meantime, the literary world evolves both in its structure and its way of functioning by changing the work of the writer. Du Camp and Flaubert, like other men of letters of their generation, had no other choice but to reconsider their condition. They brought their answers in a different, even an opposing fashion, through an extensive dialogue which developed over almost forty years - ultimately raising the fundamental question : what is a writer ? Critics generally too hastily regarded the relation between Flaubert and Du Camp, opposing the former, seen as a model of the true artist, with the latter, who was reduced to the rank of cynical and envious social climber. To revise this somewhat prejudiced judgement, initially we wil analyse their correspondence which gives us a first insight into two personalities that take form progressively, and which reveals a dual quest for literary identity. For in fact, the exceptional aspect of this difficult friendship which confronted two literary figures, are the ramifications which can be seen in their works. This will be our second level of analysis. Finally, we will consider how the matter of (re)creation of literary works is embedded in the story of this relation. Our chronological study wil highlight the degree of reality and rewriting, of truth and fantasy, of sincere outpourings and possible insincerity in this relationship

In order to discover the turning point between traditional and new education in later Ching Dynasty, and to synthesize the context of education and life of new intellectuals at that time, this study focuses on the experiences of the pioneers of new education during 1840-1894. Therefore, seven famous figures educated at the new western schools were selected to analyze: Yung Wing, Ma Xiang-Bo, Ma Jian-Zhong, Wu Ting-Fang, Yan Fu, Ho Kai, and Jeme Tien-Yow. Their educational and career experiences were analyzed from five dimensions: background, motives, institutions, educational process, and career development. The conclusions of this study are as follows: i. As to the background, those factors such as living in the southeastern coastal areas, belonging to the lower class, and believing the Christian religion would offer more opportunities for people to take new western education. ii. As to the motives, there wasn’t the one common reason for pioneers to choose new western education. iii. As to the institutions, it is found that those western schooling pioneers taking extended from the primary level to higher one, and most of them were run by Christian churches. iv. As to educational process, it is found that (1) more than half of the pioneers had some experiences of traditional education; (2) when tuition fees were paid by the sponsors, who would influenced the pioneers’ education choices; (3) with the process modernization in China, the manpower demand of industry specialists would need more than that of liberal arts. v. As to career development, it is revealed that: (1) personal relational network is one of decisive factors to the career development of those pioneers, especially in the Qing’s government; (2) their development in politics would relate to the attitude of the senior officers charging the international affairs in the central government and the admissibility of the society; owing to their academic degrees and competences, those pioneers have more chances and experiences to engage in the new western education; (4) based on their cross-culture experiences and awareness of the differences between the West and the East, most of pioneers had transformed the western thoughts into China by ways of running newspaper, translations or writings.
