Abstract:
Ernst Abbe was a brilliant German mathematician and physicist who made several of the most important contributions to the design of lenses for optical microscopy. As a young boy, Abbe lived in an impoverished family where his father labored 16 hours a day to provide for his wife and children. Abbe worked his way through school by earning scholarships and with the help of his father's employer.Abbe studied physics and mathematics as an undergraduate at the University of Jena and went to graduate school at the University of Göttingen, where he received a doctorate in thermodynamics. In 1863 Abbe joined the faculty at the University of Jena where he taught physics. He met Carl Zeiss in 1866 and became very interested in the optical problems surrounding mid-nineteenth century microscopy.

Approximately 100 specimens, representing 27 species of Pterophoridae (Plume Moths), were collected from the fauna of Bhutan. The taxonomic status of the species, observed and collected material, and host plants are listed, and a distribution map of each species is presented. The following species are recorded for the first time from Bhutan: Platyptilia farfarellus Zeller, 1867; Platyptilia sedata Meyrick, 1932; Stenoptilia zophodactylus (Duponchel, 1840); Lantanophaga pusillidactylus (Walker, 1864); Xyroptila oenophanes Meyrick, 1908; Sphenarches anisodactylus (Walker, 1864), S. zanclistes (Meyrick, 1905); Oxyptilus causodes Meyrick, 1905; Adaina microdactyla (Hübner, [1813]); and Cosmoclostis pesseuta Meyrick, 1906. One species is described as new: Pterophorus karmawangdii Gielis spec. nov.

A new species is of the genus Sanguinicola Plehn, 1905 described, Sanguinicola platyrhynchi n. sp., digenetic parasite of visceral cavity of Hemisorubim platyrhynchos (Valenciennes, 1840) from the floodplain of the upper Paraná River, Brazil. The species has been thus included because of the presence of separate dorsal genital pores, while differing from other species of the same genus mainly in digestive apparatus features, genital pore position, and infection site. Emendation of generic diagnosis is included.

RÉSUMÉ Ce texte propose une synthèse de l’évolution de la technologie agraire (procédés ou techniques, équipements, rendements) au Saguenay entre 1840 et 1950. Il fait ressortir, en particulier : a) sur de nombreux points, le caractère « primitif » de la technologie, aux premières décennies de la colonisation (1840/1885-90); b) l’existence de deux démarrages agraires, entrecoupés d’une sorte de plateau. Le premier démarrage survint entre 1885-90 et 1905-10, le deuxième à l’époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale; c) les écarts plus ou moins durables qui se creusent entre nouvelles et anciennes aires de colonisation à l’intérieur de la région - écarts imputés à un phénomène qui est ici qualifié de régression, propre aux fronts pionniers; d) les écarts qui se marquent également à l’échelle interrégionale, entre le Saguenay et les terroirs de la vallée du Saint-Laurent. L’auteur insiste aussi sur les continuités qu’on observe au Québec, à des périodes différentes, entre anciennes et nouvelles régions, du fait des caractéristiques communes aux fronts pionniers. On rappelle enfin les difficultés méthodologiques reliées à ce genre de comparaisons interrégionales, dans un cadre chronologique variable.

The Irish playwright Dion Boucicault (1820-1890) spent most of his career in the United States, where he established himself, adapting crucial moments of Irish history to the stage. Robert Emmet (1884), a play produced at the end of his career, arouses questioning surrounding its authorship. The dramatic text was arguably written by the playwright Frank Marshall (1840-1889) at the request of the actor Henry Irving (1838-1905). This paper explores the question of Robert Emmet’s authorship and investigates the reception of the production in its unsuccessful opening season at the McVicker’s Theatre in Chicago in November, 1884, and Boucicault’s part in it.

Este trabajo realiza el primer análisis cuantitativo detallado del nivel de actividad económica de Antioquia para el siglo XIX y la primera parte del XX. A partir de los datos existentes para la economía colombiana, se reconstruye la que es, además, una de las primeras series de PIB regional en Latinoamérica para el periodo. Se encuentra que en Antioquia, ya a principios del siglo XIX, se disfrutaba de ingresos per cápita superiores a los del promedio colombiano. Por otra parte, se encontraron períodos de auge económico entre 1800 y 1840, 1860 y 1880, y 1905 y 1913, siendo este último el más pronunciado. Así, se estaría dando una respuesta a la larga discusión sobre el inicio del despegue económico antioqueño. El trabajo permite comprender el crecimiento económico de Antioquia sin necesidad de recurrir a argumentos institucionales o culturales.

This article discusses the origins and early development of Chinese documentaries. Cinematography in almost all countries began with documentaries, because from the very beginning cinema existed as a means of recording. Chinese documentaries, which appeared in 1905, are no exception either. Documentaries reveal the history of Chinese cinematography. The first film produced by the Chinese was a piece from the Beijing Opera. The development of science and technology, especially photography, created necessary preconditions for the invention of cinema. In 1839, a photography emerged. In 1840, a reduction in exposure time was invented. In 1851, a photograph with moving person and an animal was taken. In 1851, the first photograph was taken. In 1878, a camera roll was invented. In 1888, the French physiologist Dules Marey presented the French Academy of Sciences with the world’s first film camera. In 1888, the film was invented. In 1892, Mr. Marei’s assistant showed moving photographs on the screen. On 28 December 1895, the Frenchman Louis Lumière in one of the cafes of Paris officially showed his films: «The doors of the factory», «The arrival of the train» etc. It is believed that in different countries of the world that this show started the era of cinematography. In early 1896, Lumière hired more than 20 people as assistants, and sent them around the world to show his film. At this time, China, India and Japan had their first film screenings. In addition, Lumière had sent many cameramen around the world to shoot the film, including to China. Therefore, the earliest films about China were not made by the Chinese themselves, but by foreign entrepreneurs. Under the influence of «Western Shadow Theatre» the Chinese also began their attempts in film production organization. In 1905, the Chinese made their first silent film in Beijing.

AbstractPlagioscion squamosissimus(Heckel, 1840) (Osteichthyes: Sciaenidae) is considered piscivorous and is a generalist species endemic to the Amazon region. This fish is an important part of the natural ecosystems in which it occurs and provides basic functional components in the food web. The genusNeoechinorhynchusStiles & Hassall, 1905 is distributed worldwide and parasitizes fish and turtles, but there are few reports of parasites of this genus in South America, due to the high diversity of fish that can be found in this region. A new species of thorny-headed worm (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) is described fromP. squamosissimusfrom Guajará Bay, Belém, Pará, Brazil. In general, the unique characteristics of the hooks on the anterior end of the proboscis and the length-to-width ratio relationship separate this new species from other described species in the genusNeoechinorhynchus. Although the species in this genus are mostly found in North America, the dearth of species known from the neotropics may be due to the lack of studies in this region.

Twelve were recorded for the first time from this region: Astatumen bartosi (W“glarska, 1959); Calohypsibius schusteri Nelson & McGlothlin, 1996; Diphascon (Adropion) prosirostre Thulin, 1928; Echiniscus merokensis Richters, 1904; Echiniscus trisetosus Cuénot, 1932; Isohypsibius pappi (Iharos, 1966); Isohypsibius ronsisvallei (Binda & Pilato, 1969); Isohypsibius sattleri (Richters, 1902); Isohypsibius schaudinni (Richters, 1909); Macrobiotus crenulatus Richters, 1904; Macrobiotus macrocalix Bertolani & Rebecchi, 1993 and Murrayon hibernicus (Murray, 1907). C. schusteri and M. crenulatus were new to the fauna of Poland, and C. schusteri and I. ronsisvallei were also new to the Carpathian fauna. Three other species Echiniscus reticulatus Murray, 1905, Hypsibius dujardini (Doyere, 1840) and Pseudechiniscus suillus (Ehrenberg, 1853) previously recorded from the Bieszczady Mts. were not confirmed in this study. A key to determine the known species from the Bieszczady Mts. is given. Taxonomical and zoogeographical remarks on these species are also given.

AbstractIn 1903, the Islamic reformist Muḥammad ʿAbduh (1849-1905), the English philosopher Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) and the English writer Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (1840-1922) met in Spencer’s home in Brighton. This article focuses on the history of the various tellings of this encounter that brought together three intellectuals from a globalizing and colonial world. It shows that the various renditions were creative negotiations of the encounter’s meaning across times, places and languages in the twentieth century. Specifically, this article’s comparison of the content, form and role of the accounts in Rashīd Riḍā’sAl-Manār(1915 and 1922), Blunt’sMy Diaries(1920), Riḍā’s biography of ʿAbduh (theTārīkh, 1931) and ʿImārah’s collection of ʿAbduh’s works (Al-Aʿmāl al-Kāmilah, 1972), and the way these accounts relate to each other through creative borrowing and translation, demonstrate the way European dominance in the global political and intellectual realm was confronted, negotiated and reiterated in the various tellings of the encounter.

In the early 1880s, the staunch Hebraist and bibliophile Ephraim Deinard (1846–1930) became a reluctant witness to the fast-paced growth of modern Yiddish culture that began in his hometown of Odessa. At the time, Deinard owned a Hebrew bookshop that had been sliding toward bankruptcy until he grudgingly adapted his wares to better reflect the market forces of the Jewish reading culture. In Memories of My People (Zikhronot bat עami), he briefly accounts for (in his view) the ill fortune of being forced to sell the Yiddish books that his customers demanded of him rather than the Hebrew literature he held so dear. Although he mentions a host of nineteenth-century Yiddish writers whom the reader will come to know in the following pages, for our present purpose, it is sufficient to remark upon the catalytic agency he assigns to the Yiddish romance novelist Nakhum Shaykevitsh (aka Shomer) (1849–1905) and Avraham Goldfaden (1840–1908), best known as the father of the Yiddish theatre. Se colectaron núcleos de crecimiento en dos poblaciones de Taxodium mucronatum en la región centrosur del estado de Guanajuato y se generaron dos cronologías de ancho de anillo de 128 y 237 años para los municipios de Manuel Doblado y Jerécuaro, respectivamente. Mediante el análisis de componentes principales se determinó una variabilidad común para ambas series de tiempo, por lo que se unieron para crear una cronología regional de 308 años (1700-2007). Para analizar su respuesta climática, se compararon los índices de ancho de anillo con los registros de precipitación de una estación climática regional compuesta por diez estaciones meteorológicas. El período que correlacionó significativamente (r = 0.75, p <0.01) corresponde a la temporada enero-abril. El análisis de calibración-verificación indica una respuesta significativa y explica 62 y 52% de la variabilidad de precipitación total, respectivamente. Dado que ambos subperíodos correlacionaron significativamente con los índices de ancho de anillo, se generó el modelo de reconstrucción climática de precipitación invierno-primavera con el total de datos disponibles con una r2 = 0.59 (p<0.001). Las sequías más fuertes que se reconstruyeron están entre los periodos 1778-1788, 1798-181, 1817-1839 y 1861-1904; mientras que para las condiciones de precipitación arriba del promedio regional destacan las de: 1789-1797, 1840-1860, 1905-1927, 1964-1969, 1987-1994 y 2003-2007.

Biographers have largely ignored Louis Pasteur's many and varied connections with art and artists. This article is the third in a series of the authors' studies of Pasteur's friendships with artists. This research project has uncovered data that enlarge the great medical chemist's biography, throwing new light on a variety of topics including his work habits, his social life, his artistic sensibilities, his efforts to lobby on behalf of his artist friends, his relationships to their patrons and to his own patrons, and his use of works of art to foster his reputation as a leader in French medical science. In their first article, the authors examined his unique working relationship with the Finnish painter Albert Edelfelt and the creation of the famous portrait of Pasteur in his laboratory in the mid-1880s. A second study documented his especially warm friendship with three French artists who came from Pasteur's home region, the Jura, or from neighbouring Alsace. The present study explores Pasteur's friendships with Max Claudet and Paul Dubois, both of whom created important representations of Pasteur. These friendships and others with patrons reveal an active pursuit of patronage and reputation building from 1876 into the late 1880s. Yet, although Pasteur actively used public art to raise his status, it becomes clear in these stories that for Pasteur beauty was an ideal and art a pleasure for its own sake.

An investigation of ecto- and endoparasites of wild rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus (L., 1758) was made during February and March 2004. Together five species of ectoparasites and seven species of endopara- sites was found in five specimens of host. Ectoparasites: acarids Leporacarus gibbus (Pagenstecher, 1862), Psoroptes cuniculi (Delafond, 1859), and Cheyletiella parasitivorax (Mégnin, 1878), flea Spilopsyllus cuniculi (Dale, 1878), and louse Haemodipsus ventricosus (Denny, 1842). Except of petechial haemorrhagies inside both earlobes of one rabbit neither hyperkeratosis nor scale with any degrees of hairlessness were detected. Higher incidence of flea Spilopsyllus cuniculi could be important for spreading of myxomatosis. In one rabbit abnormal damage of incisivi was found, which caused the highest documented incidence of acarids Cheyletiella parasitivorax (485 ex.), fleas Spilopsyllus cuniculi (65 ex.), and especially enormous amount of louse Haemodipsus ventricosus (1840 ex). This finding establish close relation between prevalence and counts of ectoparasites with health of host, because popu- lation of ectoparasites from different taxonomic groups are principally affected by effective hostęs cleanup. Handicapped hosts are not able to make clarify as effective as the healthy ones. Endoparasites: tapeworm Taenia pisiformis (Bloch, 1780) – larvae, nematods Passalurus ambiguus (Rudolphi, 1819) Rudolphi, 1845; Graphidium strigosum (Dujardin, 1845) Railliet and Henry, 1909, Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (Zeder, 1800) Loos, 1905 and protozoa Eimeria piriformis Kotlan & Pospesch, 1934; E. media Kessel, 1929, and E. perforans (Leuckart, 1879) Sluiter & Swellengrebel, 1912. Aims: School lunches are provided free in Sweden, although some children choose not to eat school lunch. The aim of this study was to analyse Swedish children’s total energy and nutrient intakes on weekdays by the frequency of school lunch consumption and to analyse energy and nutrient intakes from school lunches by sex. Factors associated with children’s school lunch habits were also studied. Methods: Children in grades 2 and 5 ( n=1905) completed a food diary (school lunch data available for 1840 children) and the mean energy and nutrient intakes per day and per school lunch were calculated. The children also completed questions on the frequency of school lunch consumption and school lunch habits. Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with school lunch habits. Results: Children who reported eating school lunch every day had significantly higher energy and absolute nutrient intakes than children reporting eating school lunch less than five times a week, but not standardized for energy. Boys had significantly higher energy and absolute nutrient intakes from school lunches than girls, but not standardized for energy. Younger children and children who liked school lunches had higher odds of eating school lunch every day. Children in grade 5, those with a foreign background and those disliking school lunches had higher odds of omitting the main lunch component. Conclusions: Regular school lunch consumption was associated with a higher total intake for most nutrients, but not a better nutrient density. School lunch habits were associated with age, ethnic background and liking school lunches.

This article analyses the slippery notions of the normal and normality in select works of Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840–1902) and Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) and argues that homosexuality became a ‘boundary object’ between the normal and the abnormal in their works. Constructing homosexuality as ‘normal enough’ provided these two key thinkers of the fin de siècle with an opportunity to challenge societal and medical norms: Krafft-Ebing did this through mapping perversions; Freud, by challenging perceived norms about sexual development more broadly. The article submits that the scientific logic presented in Krafft-Ebing’s seminal case study compilation Psychopathia Sexualis and Freud’s early theoretical writings and cases, including Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905), was itself haunted by notions of norms and the normal that were not always easy to resolve, and sometimes involved a certain amount of inspired conjecture on the part of both thinkers in order to develop and validate their differing tripartite models of normality. Krafft-Ebing imagined homosexuality as a variation of the normal by generalizing a gay male experience. He also recorded the obstreperous cases of homosexual women based largely inside the clinic but by and large ignored this evidence. Freud inextricably bound homosexuality to normality (and vice versa) by redefining homosexuals as a group to include individuals with unconscious same-sex desire. Doing so allowed him to conceptualize the fear of homosexuality as crucial in the formation of neurosis and psychosis, and at the same time put him at odds with relevant early identity politics.

With a geological history of long isolation, fragmentation, partial submersion, and subsequent rising, characterized by a remarkable diversity in topology, geology, and habitats, and the fifth-largest island of the Mediterranean, Crete has provided an ideal setting for speciation and developing a unique and diverse Staphylinidae fauna. Although beginning already in the middle of the 19th century, the exploration of this fauna gained momentum only recently. Based on a critical revision of literature data, on material collected during several recent field trips, and on additional previously unpublished records, a checklist of the Staphylinidae of Crete is compiled, including as many as 397 named species, with 115 of them reported from the island for the first time and with 48 new species described in the second part of the monograph. Additional unidentified and unnamed species, as well as species doubtfully or erroneously recorded from Crete are listed separately. The systematic, zoogeographic, and ecological composition of the Staphylinidae fauna is characterized with a special focus on the endemics. The latter are represented by 111 named and at least ten unnamed species, account for nearly one-third of the fauna, and mainly belong to the subfamilies Aleocharinae, Scydmaeninae, Pselaphinae, Paederinae, Leptotyphlinae, Staphylininae, and Omaliinae. More than half of them are even locally endemic. The genera with the greatest number of endemic species are Cephennium Müller & Kunze, 1822 of the Scydmaeninae (twelve named species) and Geostiba Thomson, 1858 of the Aleocharinae (nine named species). More than two-thirds of the endemic species are epigeic inhabitants of forests, bush and shrub habitats, grassland, and wetlands, approximately one-fourth is confined to deeper soil strata or endogean, and 8 % are myrmephilous. Slightly more than half (59 species; 53 %) of the endemics are most likely the result of in-situ radiation (18 lineages), the remainder of vicariance with mainland species. A comparison with other Mediterranean islands revealed that (a) total diversity of the Cretan fauna is significantly greater than that of other East Mediterranean islands except Corfu, but much lower than that of Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily, (b) regarding the number of endemic species Crete ranks third behind Corsica and Sardinia, and (c) the rate of endemism is greater in Crete than in any other Mediterranean island. Explanations for the observed differences in the diversity and composition of the faunas of the islands are discussed. Stichoglossa graeca Bernhauer, 1905, a species of which previously only the lectotype was known, is redescribed and illustrated. Six synonymies are proposed and one name is revalidated: Phloeocharis longipennis Fauvel, 1875 = P. hummleri Bernhauer, 1915, syn. nov.; Phytosus balticus Kraatz, 1859 = P. holtzi Bernhauer, 1935, syn. nov.; Atheta nigra (Kraatz, 1856) = A. biroi Scheerpeltz, 1964, syn. nov.; Domene stilicina (Erichson, 1840) = D. lohseiana Bordoni, 1977, syn. nov.; Oedichirus rubronotatus Pic, 1903, revalidated = O. reitteri Bernhauer, 1908, syn. nov.; Pseudolathra quadricollis (Fauvel, 1875) = P. cretensis Bordoni, 1986, syn. nov. A lectotype is designated for Stichoglossa graeca Bernhauer, 1905. Two species are reported from Greece for the first time.

Translation theory offers a complex phenomenon when source language (SL) is transported and communicated in the target language (TL). Therefore, it is a grave concern for a translator to utilize equivalent ideas in another language. The current investigation tried to analyze lexical collocations in Arabic literature poems from Divan-e Hafiz and compare interpretations made by A J. Arberry (1905–1969) and H. W. Clarke (1840-1905) in request to find the most widely recognized methods the two interpreters utilized and to uncover the benefits and imperfections relating to each technique. This paper investigated that strict, social, and semantic collocations are separately the most troublesome word mixes for interpreters to achieve the cycle. It further delineated that the most incessant methodology taken by the two interpreters was in the interpretation of the same word and, in a few cases, a decrease of the lexical relationship to limit contorting the structure, complex and semantic examples highlighted in poems while making a similar impact in the TL. This phenomenon provides an overview of how to teach Arabic literature translation well.

The list includes 4 tribes, 23 genera, 101 species and 17 subspecies. Peter Hansen (Copenhagen 1840 – Hellerup 1905) was a journalist and essayist, whowrote energetically and in a lively manner, and who was also active as a translator. HisIllustrated History of Danish Literature in three volumes is important, especially the thirdvolume, which makes it possible to approach Danish literature of the 19th century inmany ways. This comprehensive volume is an important instrument of research withregard to those parts of the literature of this period, which have not received muchattention from posterity, such as the writers on the Conservative side of the cultural debatein the last third of the century. The article investigates in which sense this historyof literature can be termed conservative, describes its views and interests, includinghow it refers to Christianity, patriotic feeling, and the conservative writers. Hansen’swork puts emphasis on a national revival and less on a religious one. The unified wholeis presented as a philosophy of life, and History means exceedingly much within thistotality. Peter Hansen wished to see Danish culture as a unity, making scholarship alsoa part of the literature, and he made various scholars write descriptions of their owndisciplines in the 19th century. P. Hansen puts emphasis on clarity, in the authors he isdealing with, as well as in his own presentation. He also wants to avoid exaggerations,e.g. with regard to national feelings, which are otherwise a mayor concern to him. Themain impression is therefore a broad and balanced representation of the topic, mainlyin accordance with the National Liberal movement of the century. The article showsthat this attitude manifests itself also in a lack of criticism as to principles of the culturalradicalism of the day, despite expressing opposition to certain means of fightingin the debate. An attitude to life is rather reflected in the optimism which he maintainscontrary to the pessimism of the naturalists.

On the night of 31 August, 1888, Mary Ann ‘Polly’ Nichols was found murdered in Buck’s Row, her throat slashed and her body mutilated. She was followed by Annie Chapman on 8 September in the year of 29 Hanbury Street, Elizabeth Stride in Dutfield’s Yard and Catherine Eddowes in Mitre Square on 30 September, and finally Mary Jane Kelly in Miller’s Court, on 9 November. These five women, all prostitutes, were victims of an unknown assailant commonly referred to by the epithet ‘Jack the Ripper’, forming an official canon which excludes at least thirteen other cases around the same time. As the Ripper was never identified or caught, he has attained an almost supernatural status in London’s history and literature, immortalised alongside other iconic figures such as Sherlock Holmes. And his killing ground, the East End suburb of Whitechapel, has become notorious in its own right. In this article, I will discuss how Whitechapel developed as a Gothic location through the body of literature devoted to the Whitechapel murders of 1888, known as 'Ripperature'. I will begin by speaking to the turn of Gothic literature towards the idea of the city as a Gothic space, before arguing that Whitechapel's development into a Gothic location may be attributed to the threat of the Ripper and the literature which emerged during and after his crimes. As a working class slum with high rates of crime and poverty, Whitechapel already enjoyed an evil reputation in the London press. However, it was the presence of Jack that would make the suburb infamous into contemporary times. The Gothic Space of the City In the nineteenth century, there was a shift in the representation of space in Gothic literature. From the depiction of the wilderness and ancient buildings such as castles as essentially Gothic, there was a turn towards the idea of the city as a Gothic space. David Punter attributes this turn to Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The wild landscape is no longer considered as dangerous as the savage city of London, and evil no longer confined only to those of working-class status (Punter 191). However, it has been argued by Lawrence Phillips and Anne Witchard that Charles Dickens may have been the first author to present London as a Gothic city, in particular his description of Seven Dials in Bell’s Life in London, 1837, where the anxiety and unease of the narrator is associated with place (11). Furthermore, Thomas de Quincey uses Gothic imagery in his descriptions of London in his 1821 book Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, calling the city a “vast centre of mystery” (217). This was followed in 1840 with Edgar Allen Poe’s story The Man of the Crowd, in which the narrator follows a stranger through the labyrinthine streets of London, experiencing its poorest and most dangerous areas. At the end of the story, Poe calls the stranger “the type and the genius of deep crime (...) He is the man of the crowd” (n. p). This association of crowds with crime is also used by Jack London in his book The People of the Abyss, published in 1905, where the author spent time living in the slums of the East End. Even William Blake could be considered to have used Gothic imagery in his description of the city in his poem London, written in 1794. The Gothic city became a recognisable and popular trope in the fin-de-siècle, or end-of-century Gothic literature, in the last few decades of the nineteenth century. This fin-de-siècle literature reflected the anxieties inherent in increasing urbanisation, wherein individuals lose their identity through their relationship with the city. Examples of fin-de-siècle Gothic literature include The Beetle by Richard Marsh, published in 1897, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, published in the same year. Evil is no longer restricted to foreign countries in these stories, but infects familiar city streets with terror, in a technique that is described as ‘everyday Gothic’ (Paulden 245). The Gothic city “is constructed by man, and yet its labyrinthine alleys remain unknowable (...) evil is not externalized elsewhere, but rather literally exists within” (Woodford n.p). The London Press and Whitechapel Prior to the Ripper murders of 1888, Whitechapel had already been given an evil reputation in the London press, heavily influenced by W.T. Stead’s reports for The Pall Mall Gazette, entitled The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon, in 1885. In these reports, Stead revealed how women and children were being sold into prostitution in suburbs such as Whitechapel. Stead used extensive Gothic imagery in his writing, one of the most enduring being the image of London as a labyrinth with a monstrous Minotaur at its centre, swallowing up his helpless victims. Counter-narratives about Whitechapel do exist, an example being Henry Mayhew’s London Labour and the London Poor, who attempted to demystify the East End by walking the streets of Whitechapel and interviewing its inhabitants in the 1860’s. Another is Arthur G. Morrison, who in 1889 dismissed the graphic descriptions of Whitechapel by other reporters as amusing to those who actually knew the area as a commercially respectable place. However, the Ripper murders in the autumn of 1888 ensured that the Gothic image of the East End would become the dominant image in journalism and literature for centuries to come. Whitechapel was a working-class slum, associated with poverty and crime, and had a large Jewish and migrant population. Indeed the claim was made that “had Whitechapel not existed, according to the rationalist, then Jack the Ripper would not have marched against civilization” (Phillips 157). Whitechapel was known as London’s “heart of darkness (…) the ultimate threat and the ultimate mystery” (Ackroyd 679). Therefore, the reporters of the London press who visited Whitechapel during and immediately following the murders understandably imbued the suburb with a Gothic atmosphere in their articles. One such newspaper article, An Autumn Evening in Whitechapel, released in November of 1888, demonstrates these characteristics in its description of Whitechapel. The anonymous reporter, writing during the Ripper murders, describes the suburb as a terrible dark ocean in which there are human monsters, where a man might get a sense of what humanity can sink to in areas of poverty. This view was shared by many, including author Margaret Harkness, whose 1889 book In Darkest London described Whitechapel as a monstrous living entity, and as a place of vice and depravity. Gothic literary tropes were also already widely used in print media to describe murders and other crimes that happened in London, such as in the sensationalist newspaper The Illustrated Police News. An example of this is an illustration published in this newspaper after the murder of Mary Kelly, showing the woman letting the Ripper into her lodgings, with the caption ‘Opening the door to admit death’. Jack is depicted as a manifestation of Death itself, with a grinning skull for a head and clutching a doctor’s bag filled with surgical instruments with which to perform his crimes (Johnston n.p.). In the magazine Punch, Jack was depicted as a phantom, the ‘Nemesis of Neglect’, representing the poverty of the East End, floating down an alleyway with his knife looking for more victims. The Ripper murders were explained by London newspapers as “the product of a diseased environment where ‘neglected human refuse’ bred crime” (Walkowitz 194). Whitechapel became a Gothic space upon which civilisation projected their inadequacies and fears, as if “it had become a microcosm of London’s own dark life” (Ackroyd 678). And in the wake of Jack the Ripper, this writing of Whitechapel as a Gothic space would only continue, with the birth of ‘Ripperature’, the body of fictional and non-fiction literature devoted to the murders. The Birth of Ripperature: The Curse upon Mitre Square and Leather Apron John Francis Brewer wrote the first known text about the Ripper murders in October of 1888, a sensational horror monograph entitled The Curse upon Mitre Square. Brewer made use of well-known Gothic tropes, such as the trans-generational curse, the inclusion of a ghost and the setting of an old church for the murder of an innocent woman. Brewer blended fact and fiction, making the Whitechapel murderer the inheritor, or even perhaps the victim of an ancient curse that hung over Mitre Square, where the second murdered prostitute, Catherine Eddowes, had been found the month before. According to Brewer, the curse originated from the murder of a woman in 1530 by her brother, a ‘mad monk’, on the steps of the high altar of the Holy Trinity Church in Aldgate. The monk, Martin, committed suicide, realising what he had done, and his ghost now appears pointing to the place where the murder occurred, promising that other killings will follow. Whitechapel is written as both a cursed and haunted Gothic space in The Curse upon Mitre Square. Brewer’s description of the area reflected the contemporary public opinion, describing the Whitechapel Road as a “portal to the filth and squalor of the East” (66). However, Mitre Square is the former location of a monastery torn down by a corrupt politician; this place, which should have been holy ground, is cursed. Mitre Square’s atmosphere ensures the continuation of violent acts in the vicinity; indeed, it seems to exude a self-aware and malevolent force that results in the death of Catherine Eddowes centuries later. This idea of Whitechapel as somehow complicit in or even directing the acts of the Ripper will later become a popular trope of Ripperature. Brewer’s work was advertised in London on posters splashed with red, a reminder of the blood spilled by the Ripper’s victims only weeks earlier. It was also widely promoted by the media and reissued in New York in 1889. It is likely that a ‘suggestion effect’ took place during the telegraph-hastened, press-driven coverage of the Jack the Ripper story, including Brewer’s monograph, spreading the image of Gothic Whitechapel as fact to the world (Dimolianis 63). Samuel E. Hudson’s account of the Ripper murders differs in style from Brewer’s because of his attempt to engage critically with issues such as the failure of the police force to find the murderer and the true identity of Jack. His book Leather Apron; or, the Horrors of Whitechapel, London, was published in December of 1888. Hudson described the five murders canonically attributed to Jack, wrote an analysis of the police investigation that followed, and speculated as to the Ripper’s motivations. Despite his intention to examine the case objectively, Hudson writes Jack as a Gothic monster, an atavistic and savage creature prowling Whitechapel to satisfy his bloodlust. Jack is associated with several Gothic tropes in Hudson’s work, and described as different types of monsters. He is called: a “fiend bearing a charmed and supernatural existence,” a “human vampire”, an “incarnate monster” and even, like Brewer, the perpetrator of “ghoulish butchery” (Hudson 40). Hudson describes Whitechapel as “the worst place in London (...) with innumerable foul and pest-ridden alleys” (9). Whitechapel becomes implicated in the Ripper murders because of its previously established reputation as a crime-ridden slum. Poverty forced women into prostitution, meaning they were often out alone late at night, and its many courts and alleyways allowed the Ripper an easy escape from his pursuers after each murder (Warwick 560). The aspect of Whitechapel that Hudson emphasises the most is its darkness; “off the boulevard, away from the streaming gas-jets (...) the knave ran but slight chance of interruption” (40). Whitechapel is a place of shadows, its darkest places negotiated only by ‘fallen women’ and their clients, and Jack himself. Hudson’s casting of Jack as a vampire makes his preference for the night, and his ability to skilfully disembowel prostitutes and disappear without a trace, intelligible to his readers as the attributes of a Gothic monster. Significantly, Hudson’s London is personified as female, the same sex as the Ripper victims, evoking a sense of passive vulnerability against the acts of the masculine and predatory Jack, Hudson writing that “it was not until four Whitechapel women had perished (...) that London awoke to the startling fact that a monster was at work upon her streets” (8). The Complicity of Gothic Whitechapel in the Ripper Murders This seeming complicity of Whitechapel as a Gothic space in the Ripper murders, which Brewer and Hudson suggest in their work, can be seen to have influenced subsequent representations of Whitechapel in Ripperature. Whitechapel is no longer simply the location in which these terrible events take place; they happen because of Whitechapel itself, the space exerting a self-conscious malevolence and kinship with Jack. Historically, the murders forced Queen Victoria to call for redevelopment in Spitalfields, the improvement of living conditions for the working class, and for a better police force to patrol the East End to prevent similar crimes (Sugden 2). The fact that Jack was never captured “seemed only to confirm the impression that the bloodshed was created by the foul streets themselves: that the East End was the true Ripper,” (Ackroyd 678) using the murderer as a way to emerge into the public consciousness. In Ripperature, this idea was further developed by the now popular image of Jack “stalking the black alleyways [in] thick swirling fog” (Jones 15). This otherworldly fog seems to imply a mystical relationship between Jack and Whitechapel, shielding him from view and disorientating his victims. Whitechapel shares the guilt of the murders as a malevolent and essentially pagan space. The notion of Whitechapel as being inscribed with paganism and magic has become an enduring and popular trope of Ripperature. It relates to an obscure theory that drawing lines between the locations of the first four Ripper murders created Satanic and profane religious symbols, suggesting that they were predetermined locations for a black magic ritual (Odell 217). This theory was expanded upon most extensively in Alan Moore’s graphic novel From Hell, published in 1999. In From Hell, Jack connects several important historical and religious sites around London by drawing a pentacle on a map of the city. He explains the murders as a reinforcement of the pentacle’s “lines of power and meaning (...) this pentacle of sun gods, obelisks and rational male fire, within unconsciousness, the moon and womanhood are chained” (Moore 4.37). London becomes a ‘textbook’, a “literature of stone, of place-names and associations,” stretching back to the Romans and their pagan gods (Moore 4.9). Buck’s Row, the real location of the murder of Mary Ann Nichols, is pagan in origin; named for the deer that were sacrificed on the goddess Diana’s altars. However, Moore’s Whitechapel is also Hell itself, the result of Jack slipping further into insanity as the murders continue. From Hell is illustrated in black and white, which emphasises the shadows and darkness of Whitechapel. The buildings are indistinct scrawls of shadow, Jack often nothing more than a silhouette, forcing the reader to occupy the same “murky moral and spiritual darkness” that the Ripper does (Ferguson 58). Artist Eddie Campbell’s use of shade and shadow in his illustrations also contribute to the image of Whitechapel-as-Hell as a subterranean place. Therefore, in tracing the representations of Whitechapel in the London press and in Ripperature from 1888 onwards, the development of Whitechapel as a Gothic location becomes clear. From the geographical setting of the Ripper murders, Whitechapel has become a Gothic space, complicit in Jack’s work if not actively inspiring the murders. Whitechapel, although known to the public before the Ripper as a crime-ridden slum, developed into a Gothic space because of the murders, and continues to be associated with the Gothic in contemporary Ripperature as an uncanny and malevolent space “which seems to compel recognition as not of this earth" (Ackroyd 581).
