Mandoul, Thierry. "L' «Histoire de l'architecture » d'Auguste Choisy : entre raison et utopie." Paris 8, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA083577.
Full textThe study of this work is the engineer Auguste Choisy's book, "Histoire de l'architecture", published in 1899. The dissertation examines the book's conception of history, revealing the scientific construction underlying the historical narrative. It discusses the manner in which the "Histoire" was subject to the episteme of its time, influenced by engineering and natural sciences as well as social and political utopias. The study also focuses on the status and the use of graphic representation, exploring a working thought process in which the rational and the imaginary prove to be inseparably associated. It aims to define the significant elements that form both the rules of architectural production and the structure of the historical interpretation itself. Finally, it situates "Histoire de l'architecture" within a general history of labour and considers to what extent the book may be qualified as a technical and Saint-Simonian utopia

Full textCatulle Mendès was forgotten after he died but he was an influencial and acknowledged writer in his lifetime. The aim of this thesis is to highlight this important figure of the Second Empire and the Belle Epoque literary life proposing a factual and an intellectual biography of this writer whose work was rich and diverse. It is the first analysis to recall Mendès’s life from his birth in Bordeaux in 1841 to his accidental death in St Germain-en- Laye in 1909. It seeks to understand how the young man once in Paris in 1859 managed to impose himself as a writer and a journalist. In 1866, he married Théophile Gautier’s daughter, Judith. He became a one-man band in the Parisian literary life. He maintained close relations with Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Leconte de Lisle and the Parnassians. In 1877, he wrote the suite of Émile Zola’s novel L’Assommoir in his review La République des lettres after Le Bien public had stopped publishing it. He was also one of the first men to support Richard Wagner in France. As the founder of the Revue fantaisiste, Le Parnasse contemporain and La République des Lettres and as a collaborator for La Vie populaire, Gil Blas, L’Écho de Paris and Le Journal, he played a major role in the spreading of literary ideas. A detailed analysis of his aesthetic choices provides a better understanding of the formal and thematic characteristics of a way of writing which has evolved from Parnasse to Symbolism, including Decadentism. Long extracts from his correspondence offer a new light of his personality
Haziot, Judith. "Le rôle de la facture apparente en peinture : Berthe Morisot, Vincent Van Gogh et Francis Bacon, au prisme des sciences cognitives." Thesis, Amiens, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016AMIE0036.
Full textIs there a connection between the effect produced by an image and its texture? The pictorial illusionism of the Renaissance, based on linear perspective, attempted to erase all traces of the facture in paintings. But it seems that the presence of the artist’s body in the facture of the work provokes a more immediate emotion drawn from the origins of perception. This thesis will show that discoveries in cognitive sciences on perception were anticipated by painters of the XIX and XXth centuries, especially B. Morisot, V. Van Gogh, and F. Bacon, who contributed to change the habits of seeing. Those artists found out that an incomplete image, which keeps the trace of its facture, doesn’t hinder its understanding, but does quite the contrary. Van Gogh and Bacon noticed that such a way to represent things, leaving imperfections and visible matter, produces on the spectator a more immediate and stronger effect than an image rationally mastered from the beginning to the end. The approach of each of those artists will be analysed ; they had very interesting intuitions regarding recent discoveries in cognitive sciences. Recent results from anatomical and psycho-physiological studies on the mechanisms of vision show astonishing links with the intuitions of the artists. The trace of the gesture gives motor information that the brain can grasp. Our perception completes the gaps of unfinished visual information, because our brain, originally develop for our survival, is used to build scenarios from what is only probable, uncertain. Surfaces where the texture is visible allow us to get inside the process of materially manufacturing the work, and to the conditional options of creativity

Full textFrom 1883 to1939, after a period dominated by the lyrical Wagnerian drama, many French or French-speaking writers started collaborating with composers to give birth to opera compositions. This thesis is a study of the human relationships and the creative work which was established between men of letters and musicians. It analyses more particularly the libretti of five creators who distinguish themselves by their interest in the lyrical genre, but also by the diversity of their libretti and of their collaboration : Catulle Mendès, Emile Zola, Jean Cocteau, Paul Claudel and Armand Lunel. The first part deals with the genesis of the lyrical works, from the beginning of the four-handed cooperation to the creation of the works (if it takes form ). Each collaboration opens a window on the man and on the writer : it reveals his temperament, his aesthetic vision and his convictions. It also measures the aesthetic and human investment of these creators and it permits to trace their doubts, their hopes, their wounded pride , their vexations as well as their exaltation. The second part examines the libretto as poetical creation for the writers : we ponder over the opportunity given by opera writing which allows them to express a personal style while adjusting to a medium generally unfamiliar to them. The aim is then to question the aesthical contributions which writers were able to bring to the libretto in so far as the calling in of a « specialist » could appear, in the eyes of their collaboraters, as a guarantee of literary quality. Can this participation allow opera writing to enter the sphere of literature ?
