Abstract:
The genus Bellatrachia Schileyko, 2018 was described based on a specimen identified as Helix (Chloritis) pseudomiara Bavay & Dautzenberg, 1909. We concluded that the examined specimen is not that species, but Helixcondoriana Crosse & Fischer, 1863. Therefore, (1) the type species of Bellatrachia must be replaced with Helixcondoriana; (2) the species Helix (Chloritis) pseudomiara must be re-allocated to the genus Trichochloritis; (3) the erroneous treatment of the genus Trichochloritis by Schileyko (2007) needs to be corrected through the description of a new genus, Dentichloritisgen. nov. based on Helixbrevidens Sowerby I, 1841. In addition, Chloritismicrotricha Möllendorff, 1898 is treated as a synonym of Helixcondoriana, and further information on the genitalia of Chloritis (?) bifoveata (Benson, 1856) is presented.

Theodor Emil Kocher (1841-1917) was born in Bern and educated in several universities in Europe. Like many surgeons of that time, Kocher performed orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery and endocrine surgery and became famous in many fields. He is remembered for his description of a new approach to the hip joint and elbow joint, as well as a maneuver for reduction of dislocated shoulder joints. He introduced many instruments and some of them, such as the Kocher clamp are still in use. His most important contribution was thyroid gland surgery, and he received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1909, for this advancement. He was a scientific, hard working meticulous surgeon, dedicated to his patients and students, which found him a place in the history of medicine.

Abstract:
The Indo–Pacific reef-dwelling comatulid crinoid Comaster multifidus (MÜller, 1841) is the type species of the genus Comaster Agassiz, 1836. Re-examination of the type specimen of C. multifidus shows that it does not conform to the concept of the species as currently applied and does not belong in the genus as currently diagnosed. Instead, it falls within ComanthinaA. H. Clark, 1909, and is identical toComanthina variabilis Bell, 1882.Comanthina thus becomes a junior synonym of Comaster because Actinometra nobilis Carpenter, 1884, the type species of Comanthina, is clearly congeneric with A. variabilis. Species currently assigned to Comanthina are herein transferred to Comaster. The other species currently included in Comaster represent a distinct taxonomic group and are herein transferred to the next most senior available genus, Phanogenia Lovén, 1866. The holotypes of the type species of Comaster and Phanogenia are redescribed in detail.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Heavy snowfall and extreme snow depth cause serious losses of human life and property in the northern Tianshan Mountains almost every winter. Snow cover is an important indicator of climate change. In this study, we developed five tree-ring-width chronologies of Schrenk spruce (Picea schrenkiana Fisch. et Mey) from the northern Tianshan Mountains using standard dendrochronological methods. Correlation analyses indicated that radial growth of trees in the northern Tianshan Mountains is positively affected by annual maximum snow depth. This relationship was validated and models of annual maximum snow depth back to the 18th century were developed. The reconstruction explains 48.3% of the variance in the instrumental temperature records during the 1958/59–2003/04 calibration periods. It indicates that quasi-periodic changes exist on 2.0–4.0-yr, 5.3-yr, 14.0-yr, and 36.0-yr scales. The reconstructed series shows that maximum snow depth exhibits obvious stages change, the periods characterized by lower maximum snow depth were 1809/10–1840/41, 1873/74–1893/94, 1909/10–1929/30, 1964/65–1981/82, and the periods characterized by higher maximum snow depth were 1841/42–1872/73, 1894/95–1908/09, 1930/31–1963/64, and 1982/83–present. The lower period of annual maximum snow depth during the 1920s–1930s is consistent with the severe drought that occurred at this time in northern China. From the 1970s to the present, the maximum snow depth has increased clearly with the change to a warmer and wetter climate in Xinjiang. The reconstruction sheds new light on snow cover variability and change in a region where the climate history for the past several centuries is poorly understood.

CALDER, DALE R. "Some anthoathecate hydroids and limnopolyps (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) from the Hawaiian archipelago." Zootaxa 2590, no. 1 (August 31, 2010): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.2590.1.1.

Full text
Abstract:
A systematic account is given of 17 families, 25 genera, and 32 species of anthoathecate hydroids and limnopolyps reported from Hawaii. Applying Reversal of Precedence provisions in zoological nomenclature, the familiar hydrozoan genus names Hydractinia Van Beneden, 1844a, Bimeria Wright, 1859a, and Porpita Lamarck, 1801 are designated as valid and as nomena protecta, while seldom-used older names threatening them (the synonyms Echinochorium Hassall, 1841 and Manicella Allman, 1859a, and the homonym Porpita Soldani, 1789 respectively) are relegated to nomena oblita. Also designated a nomen oblitum is the name Pyxidium Leuckart, 1856, threatening its junior but widely used synonym Ectopleura L. Agassiz, 1862. The species name Bimeria vestita Wright, 1859a is rendered valid and a nomen protectum, while its virtually unused senior synonym Manicella fusca Allman, 1859 becomes a nomen oblitum. Hydrodendrium Nutting, 1905 is reinstated as a valid genus, distinct from Hydractinia and replacing its junior objective synonym Nuttingia Stechow, 1909. The spelling of Hydrodendridae Nutting, 1905 is emended to Hydrodendriidae, but that family name is retained as a synonym of Hydractiniidae. Usage of the familiar generic name Sphaerocoryne Pictet, 1893 is upheld by recognizing it and its former senior subjective synonym Corynetes Haeckel, 1879 as valid. The correct spelling of the family name originally founded as Olindiadae Haeckel, 1879 is taken to be Olindiidae, and spelling of the species name Solanderia misakinensis (Inaba, 1892), first established as Dendrocryne (sic) misakii, is stabilized. One new species, Stylactaria munita, is described from shallow waters at Hawaii Kai, Oahu. Lectotypes are designated for Corydendrium corrugatum Nutting, 1905 and Corydendrium minor Nutting, 1905 (=Turritopsis minor), both originally described from Hawaii. Type material of Balea mirabilis Nutting, 1905 (=Balella mirabilis), originally described from waters between the islands of Molokai and Maui, could not be located. Six anthoathecate species [Corydendrium parasiticum (Linnaeus, 1767), Bimeria vestita, Amphinema sp., Eudendrium carneum Clarke, 1882, Ectopleura viridis (Pictet, 1893), and Sphaerocoryne bedoti Pictet, 1893] are recorded from Hawaii for the first time.

Abstract:
One hundred years ago, in 1909, Theodor Kocher was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his work on the physiology, pathology, and surgery of the thyroid gland. In the late 19th century, the resection of the thyroid was feared because of its high mortality rate. Kocher's innovative techniques resulted in safe outcomes. His observations that radical resection of the thyroid results in "cachexia strumipriva" contributed to the recognition that the thyroid is essential for normal growth, development and metabolism. He made many other seminal contributions to the field of surgery and medicine, and his expertise was internationally recognized. Kocher served as the chairman of surgery at the University of Bern in Switzerland, his alma mater, until his death in 1917.

Abstract:

Kocher studied the problems of asepsis and antisepsis, abdominal surgery, thyroid surgery, traumatology. He deepened his teaching of the antisepsis and asepsis, introduced the concept of Implant Infection. It is noted that Kocher has developed sterilization methods suture material. He suggested operative access to the liver and biliary tracts, an original method of gastrectomy, methods for mobilizing the duodenum, surgical treatment of inguinal hernias, which are now described in textbooks. He also developed gentle surgical approaches for the procedure on large joints (hook-shaped incisions). The reduction of shoulder dislocations according to Kocher became a part of the daily practice of surgeons and traumatologists. T. Kocher's research on the problems of diseases of the thyroid gland is world famous. T. Kocher was awarded the 1909 Nobel Prize for his work on the physiology, pathology and surgery of the thyroid gland. He proposed some surgical instruments (hemostatic clamp, grooved probe, gastric clamp, etc.), a gastric tube was put into practice. The published manual on operative surgery has survived 5 reprints (1892–1907) and has been translated into many world's languages.

Abstract:
The name of Pavel Annenkov belongs to the cohort of those remarkable figures of the Russian culture of the past, who after 1917 were almost completely forgotten. Except for the volume of his «Literary Memoirs», which was reprinted in 1928 and which quickly became a bibliographic rarity, and his memoirs about his meeting with N. V. Gogol in Rome in 1841, Annenkov was usually mentioned only as one of the opponents of the democratic revolutionaries. Attempts to present an objective portrait of him were few, and their results became known only to a narrow circle of specialists. Nevertheless, Annenkov knew personally K. Marx, A.I. Herzen, I.S. Turgenev, N.V. Gogol, N.P. Ogarev, and V.G. Belinsky. For his works on Pushkin, in 1880 when establishing a monument to Alexander Pushkin in Moscow on his birthday on June 6, Moscow University elected Annenkov as its honorary member. The situation changed a hundred years later, when in the 1980s some of Annenkov’s literary and critical articles began to be reprinted, then his «Literary Memoirs», «Paris Letters», «Pushkin in the Alexander Era» and, finally, in 1984–1985, his famous «Materials for the Biography of Alexander Pushkin» were reprinted twice. Published in a large circulation, with detailed introductory articles and comments, these books not only expanded the modern reader’s understanding of the literary and social life of Russia and Western Europe for almost three quarters of the past century, but also presented a close-up portrait of its author. However, the return of P.V. Annenkov to modern culture, in particular, to regional history, cannot be considered entirely accomplished. The author examines individual pages of Simbirsk stage in the biography of the writer and the fate of his library. It is concluded that Annenkov’s contribution to the cultural development of Simbirsk Volga region is of great interest for researchers of the Russian history in our time.

It provoked the reform movement that took place in Japan era (Meiji Meiji- enlightened judgment), in the nineteenth century, the great admiration and great interest from the presence of some researchers, trying to decipher the secrets of the success of the Japanese experience and superiority dazzling and fast on the rest of the world.
