AbstractCarl Wernicke [1848-1905] gave the first description of sensory aphasia [1874] and of ophthalmoplegic encephalopathy [1881]. In addition, his notion of ‘Sejunction’ [1894] foreshadowed Bleuler's ‘schizophrenia [1908], and he may be justly said to have been the first successful organic neuropsychiatrist.

Abstract:
The genus Nipponodrasterius Kishii, 1966 was established as a member of the subfamily Conoderinae Fleutiaux, 1919 (now tribe Oophorini Gistel, 1848; subfamily Agrypninae Candèze, 1857) based on N. alpicola. The genus was suggested to be unlikely to belong to Agrypninae because it lacks diagnostic features of the Agrypninae. However, there are no taxonomic treatments for the genus or species. Here, we review the status of the genus and species by examining the holotype of N. alpicola. Consequently, the genus was found to be a junior synonym of the genus Gamepenthes Fleutiaux, 1928 and N. alpicola was found to be a junior synonym of G. pictipennis (Lewis, 1894). We review all species of Gamepenthes in Japan and provide a key to species.

Abstract:
Predicting species distribution in different climates is most often made by climate models (?climate envelope models? - CEM) which are using the current geographical distribution of species and climate characteristics of the area. Hoverflies (Insecta: Diptera: Syrphidae) can act as bioindicators and monitors of climate change and habitat quality. Cheilosia Meigen, 1822 is one of the largest hoverflies genera, with about 450 described species. The aim of this study was to model the current potential distribution of six species from Cheilosia proxima group on the Balkan Peninsula (Cheilosia aerea Dufour, 1848, C. balkana Vujic, 1994, C. gigantea Zetterstedt, 1838, C. pascuorum Becker, 1894, C. proxima Zetterstedt, 1843 and C. rufimana Becker, 1894) using maximum entropy modeling (Maxent). It is observed that parameters with highest influence on the analyzed species are Altitude and BIO 15 (Precipitation Seasonality) for all species, except C. rufimana. Parameter that also substantially influenced for all species, except C. pascuorum, is BIO 18 (Precipitation of Warmest Quarter). The models of current distribution have shown that the most important area of the Balkan Peninsula, for species from Cheilosia proxima group, is Dinaric mountains. Information obtained in this paper can help in future monitoring of species, as well as for the conservation measures, especially for endemics and rare species.

Abstract:
Hugh Miller FGS (1850–1896) wrote a set of three memoirs on his father Hugh Miller (1802–1856), geologist, writer and newspaper editor. The first two are successive versions of a text written about 1883 to accompany a portrait of the elder Miller by the pioneering photographers David Octavius Hill (1802–1870) and Robert Adamson (1821–1848). The second version appeared, much delayed, in Calotypes, an album of their work, in 1928. The book's editor, Andrew Elliot (1830–1921), had, in partnership with John Shepherd, briefly published Miller's Testimony of the Rocks of 1857. A third version is the 1894 entry on Hugh Miller in the Dictionary of National Biography. The three memoirs, the only biographical writings on the elder Miller by his son, contain useful material, including a notable assessment of his palaeontological work by Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895).

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Created in 1806 by Napoleon, the conseil des prud'hommes were municipal labour arbitration boards established to settle workplace differences between workers and employers in the textile industry amicably and through conciliation. The northern French town of Tourcoing was a comparatively conservative city, where radical politics and confrontational labour relations found little support throughout the nineteenth century. Therefore, the arbitration boards known as the conseil des prud'hommes could be expected to have been a popular method of settling workplace conflicts. Initially, only employers could elect and be board members; reform in 1848 extended these rights to male workers. Other important changes occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century that could potentially affect labour relations: the legalization of strikes in 1864 and the legalization of unions two decades later. This thesis explores the impact these changes had on the use of Tourcoing's conseil des prud'hommes, as well as the outcome of cases brought to their attention between 1848 and 1894. It argues that, although the boards were underused in this period, the presence of workers on the boards was beneficial to Tourcoing's working class, particularly female and unskilled workers, who found themselves losing less and compromising more in order to settle their workplace disputes. However, the growing emphasis on compromise did not please employers who began to abandon the boards immediately after the 1848 reform. The influence of unions and socialist groups in the late 1880s and early 1890s reinforced this trend not only among employers, but also among female and unskilled workers who found the increasingly confrontational attitudes at the boards an obstacle to settling cases through conciliation. As a result, both of these groups of workers also began to turn their backs on the prud'hommes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis takes as its point of departure the Jordan decomposition theorem and traces its evolution over the sixty-year period from its statement by Camille Jordan in 1870 to 1930 and the emergence of the theory of canonical matrices. A historical analysis of this particular theorem serves as a lens not only on internal developments of the evolving mathematics discipline of algebra but also on the external developments of mathematics as an internationalizing discipline in the decades around the turn of the twentieth century. The thesis draws from the study of networks of sources in order to analyze the theorem's transformation from a result in nineteenth-century group theory to one in the new twentieth century area of linear algebra, while, at the same time, the thesis explores issues of community formation and the role of tacit knowledge in the evolution of mathematical methods. The thesis will focus on a history the decomposition of matrices as a method of decomposition of a particular form of representation

Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine the representation of the "Orient", in French travel literature in the first nineteenth century. It invites to detailed analysis for the six travel histories of the "Orient", which we have chosen. The objective is to determine the status of these trips, the motivations, the conditions, the risks, the followed routes, the means of transport used at the time as well as the views of travel writers of the region, their impressions and feelings. It's also to know how the "Orient", the "Other" fascinating for Westerners, was presented in French literature of the Romanticism century. Following Bonaparte's expedition to the "Orient" in the early nineteenth century which opens the way to the region, many of the French travelers who searching of exoticism have led to the "Orient". On their return, they began to write and publish their diaries, their stories, notes. . . Etc. The literary, artistic and cultural manifestation unprecedented born in France, giving rise to the so-called «Orientalism». The present study shows, on the one hand, that the literature is produced by the imagination of the "Orient" with wealth equal to the disciplines that have been preferred so far by studies of the “Orient”, and on the other, that there is a need to open a dialogue between literature and the Eastern knowledge. So, this thesis evokes the singularity of the meeting between the world of eastern knowledge and the reader
