Abstract:
The tribe Lichniini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae), which includes two genera and six species, is revised. A key to species, descriptions of genera and species, a checklist, distributional and temporal data, and designation of lectotypes and neotypes are given. The genus Lichnia Erichson, 1835 includes two species: L. gallardoi Gutiérrez, 1941 and L. limbata Erichson, 1835 (lectotype designated). The genus Arctodium Burmeister, 1844 includes four species: A. discolor (Erichson, 1835) (neotype designated), A. mahdii new species, A. planum (Blanchard, 1850) (lectotype designated), and A. vulpinum (Erichson, 1835) (lectotype designated). The following nomenclatural changes are made: Lichniini is transferred from Glaphyridae to Melolonthinae (Scarabaeoidea: Scarabaeidae) and the spelling is emended from “Lichnini” to “Lichniini”; Dasychaeta Erichson, 1847 is a new junior synonym of Lichnia; Dasychaeta lateralis Erichson, 1847 (neotype designated) is a new junior synonym of L. limbata; Lichnia porteri Gutiérrez, 1941 (neotype designated) is a new junior synonym of L. gallardoi; Cratoscelis aterrima Blanchard, 1850 (lectotype designated) is a new junior synonym of A. vulpinum; Cratoscelis canicapilla Philippi & Philippi, 1864 (lectotype designated) is a new junior synonym of A. planum; Cratoscelis gayana Blanchard, 1850 (lectotype designated) is a new junior synonym of A. vulpinum; Cratoscelis striolata Redtenbacher, 1868 (lectotype designated) is a new junior synonym of A. vulpinum; Cratoscelis villosa Blanchard, 1850 (lectotype designated) is a new junior synonym of A. vulpinum; and Cratoscelis Erichson, 1835 is a junior homonym of Cratoscelis Lucas, 1834 (Araneae: Sicariidae) and a synonym of Arctodium Burmeister, 1844.

Abstract:
The genus Triportheus Cope, 1872 is revised and a total of 16 species (including 3 new species) are recognized from most of the major river drainages of South America. Triportheus magdalenae (Steindachner, 1878) is the sole species occurring west of the Andean Cordilleras. Triportheus paranensis (Günther, 1874) is considered a junior synonym of Triportheus nematurus (Kner, 1858) and a new Triportheus species is described for the río Paraguay basin. Chalcinus rotundatus iquitensis Nakashima, 1941 and Chalcinus elongatus iquitensis Nakashima, 1941 are placed into the synonymy of Triportheus albus Cope, 1872 and T. culter (Cope, 1872) respectively. The name Salmo clupeoides employed by Natterer (in Kner, 1860) is considered a nomen nudum. Neotypes are designated for Chalceus angulatus Spix & Agassiz, 1829, Chalceus rotundatus Jardine in Schomburgk, 1841 and Chalcinus auritus Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1850. Lectotypes are designated for Chalcinus brachipomus Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1850 and Chalcinus nematurus. Identification keys are provided for the Triportheus species in the major drainage basins of South America.

Abstract:
AbstractMono Lake sediments have recorded five major oscillations in the hydrologic balance between A.D. 1700 and 1941. These oscillations can be correlated with tree-ring-based oscillations in Sierra Nevada snowpack. Comparison of a tree-ring-based reconstruction of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index (D’Arrigo et al., 2001) with a coral-based reconstruction of Subtropical South Pacific sea-surface temperature (Linsley et al., 2000) indicates a high degree of correlation between the two records during the past 300 yr. This suggests that the PDO has been a pan-Pacific phenomena for at least the past few hundred years. Major oscillations in the hydrologic balance of the Sierra Nevada correspond to changes in the sign of the PDO with extreme droughts occurring during PDO maxima. Four droughts centered on A.D. 1710, 1770, 1850, and 1930 indicate PDO-related drought reoccurrence intervals ranging from 60 to 80 yr.

Abstract:
The starting point of this study is the sense produced by two works relevant to different aesthetics: Balzac’s and Woolf’s. We tried first to envisage how far we could extend the muthos notion of Aristotle’s poetics. Specifically, we examined the relationship between character (in both meanings of personality and personage) and dramatic action, and identified the essential conditions of poetry, the very ground of its intelligibility. We emphasized the fact that, from the character's point of view, dramatic action is a matter of passion: action should not be meant as a character's display, but as a universal, the only way to understand the individual. Here, the important question of time is twofold: we insisted on the time required by poetic activity, and viewed reading as the work's second creation. On the other hand, the work's timelessness conceptualized by Aristotle’s poetics as a simultaneous vision resides in that the analytic reading of the work is converted into a synthetic understanding: the latter is independent of the eye's movement; in the same way Aristotle says the perception of dramatic action is independent of its theatre performance

Pfister, Alice. Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040188.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between childhood and poetical feeling to consider how childhood impressions can implicitly model a modern narrative aesthetics. A corpus of narratives by Pierre Loti, Marcel Proust, Colette, Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield serves to analyse the fictional inscription of child characters and show the likeness between allegedly childish characteristics and traits related to a certain conception of the modern narrative, at the corner of the 19th and 20th centuries. Among these characteristics : the predominance of subjectivity, a poetical feeling pervading the text, and a discontinuous narrative focusing on moments of being. The analysis summons both literary and scientific representations of the child, from 18th to 20th century. It convokes the theories of the first child-psychologists along with Romantic texts figuring child poets and questions the premise, according to Baudelaire, that genius is based on « childhood recovered ». In doing so it means to shed light on the phantasmatic conceptions of the child implicitly activated by the authors of these narratives. The child’s proverbial imagination and credulity, the presumed authenticity of an age closer to origins are as many utopic projections conveyed by literature and cautioned, to a certain point, by philosophic and scientific thoughts until the first third of the 20th century. This study examines their sources and their stakes to understand what accounts for them and to investigate their resonance with certain writing dimensions, such as poetry, mysticism and impressionism

Abstract:
The object of this study is to explore a figure of mythological origin which has been actualized and reinterpreted in the first half of the XXth century by anthropologists first and then, in their wake, by a few poetic works – the Great Goddess of Antiquity, now popularized as the Goddess. From anthropological construction to literary rewriting, the goddess appears as a composite figure, embodying both the idea of the mother and of death. As a woman, she is opposed to man, as a mother-goddess, to the father-god. A whole network of diversely originated representations and narratives develops around her: the narrative of the hero’s confrontation with the Goddess, the theory of prehistoric matriarchy, revelations both sexual and spiritual, the enigma of poetry. Through her, the question of the problematic relations between female gender and humanity is ultimately raised

Abstract:
Agriculture is the mainstay of more than 70% of India’s more than 1 billion population. Indian agriculture is predominantly rain-fed and depends on the spatial and temporal distribution of rains from southwest (June– September) and northeast (October–December) monsoons. A monsoon refers to seasonal alteration of atmospheric flow. The Indian subcontinent is predominantly characterized by a tropical monsoon climate, where climatic regimes are governed by rainfall rather than by temperature. The southwest monsoon accounts for 70–90% of the annual rainfall. The Technical Committee on Drought Prone Areas Program (DPAP) and the Desert Development Program (DDP) identified about 120 million ha of the country’s land spread in 185 districts as drought prone (DPAP/DDP,1994). Though the country as a whole receives an average annual rainfall of 1100 mm, the arid regions receive between 100 and 500 mm, and semiarid regions receive between 350 and 1500 mm of rainfall. Arid and semiarid regions of the country experience frequent droughts. The arid region in Rajasthan state produces 76% of pearl millet production of the country, but the average productivity is only 267 kg/ha for the whole of Rajasthan compared to 452 kg/ha for the country. Drought frequency is once in 2.5 years in arid zones and once in 4 years in semiarid regions (table 23.1). India experienced droughts in 1792, 1804, 1812–13, 1833–34, 1838– 39, 1848–49, 1850–51, 1853–54, 1868–69, 1877, 1891, 1896, 1899, 1905, 1911, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1941, 1951, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1974, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1999, and 2000. A higher frequency of drought occurred during 1891 –20, 1965–90, 1997 –2000, and 2002. The main food crops affected by drought are rice, wheat, pearl millet, sorghum, and pegion pea that are grown during southwest monsoon season under rain-fed conditions. Legumes and pulses, which are short-duration crops, are less affected. Persistent droughts cause crop failures and lead to acute shortage of food, fodder, and water (for drinking or irrigation), affecting human and livestock health. During drought years, people and livestock in the arid parts of Rajasthan migrate to neighboring states in search of food, fodder, drinking water, and employment.
