Abstract:
A man of considerable complexity, Edward Angle combined a fierce determination to achieve perfection with an uncompromising demand that all those around him should also be imbued with the same commitment. It was a combination that enabled Angle to become an icon in Dentistry, for he is widely regarded as the father of modern Orthodontics and his concepts and appliances still provide the foundation for much of the discipline today. He was born in Herrick, Pennsylvania on June 1st 1855. Abandoning the option to continue the family tradition of farming, the young Angle apprenticed himself to a dentist, then enrolled as a student in the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. He developed an abiding interest in the challenges of malocclusion and became known for his innovative views on corrective treatment. Appointed as teacher in Orthodontics at St Louis and Washington Universities where the subject was a minor component of the Department of Prosthetics, he became convinced that the discipline warranted separate educational facilities. That became a lifelong objective and indeed resulted in the first institution devoted exclusively to the teaching of Orthodontics... recognised by the State of California in 1924 and designated as The Edward H Angle College of Orthodontia.

Abstract Much of what is known about Edward Hartley Angle, MD, DDS (1855–1930), the acknowledged “father” of modern orthodontics, has been derived from secondary sources, accounts written by his contemporaries and others. New historical research using primary sources, largely the recently published four-volume sourcebook of Angle's correspondence and business transactions from 1899 to 1910, gives a broad view of the personality, interests, and activities of this prime mover in the evolution of orthodontics. This three-part article highlights aspects of Edward H. Angle's life and persona, based on new findings culled from his letters and other personal documents. Part 3 presents a biographical chronology of Angle's remarkable life.

Abstract:
Ants occur in all strata of tropical forest by nesting, foraging and interacting with plants and other resident in these habitats. It is know that a large number of ant species live in the leaflitter and soil. This study aim to know if the occurrence of the species of ants from Cerrado of the Northeastern State of Maranhão depends on the attributes of soils and climatic factors. We found 48 species of ants, and ten of them had highest importance value, and are correlated with the soil properties, litter biomass, basal area, humidity and temperature, by using principal component analysis (PCA). The soil properties (density, porosity, particle size, aggregate stability index, and levels of Mg2+, Ca2+, carbon and potential acidity); vegetation (basal area and dry mass of litter) and temperature and humidity at soil level affect the occurrence of the following ants species Camponotus comatulus Mackay, 2010, Ectatomma muticum Mayr, 1870, Pseudomyrmex boopis (Roger, 1863), Pseudomyrmex termitarius (Smith, 1855), Dinoponera gigantea (Peerty, 1833), Ochetomyrmex neopolitus Fernández, 2003, Crematogaster cf acuta, Pheidole casta Wheeler, 1908, Solenopsis bruesi Creighton, 1930 and Solenopsis. Abstract:
An illustrated dichotomous identification key for a total of 54 Auchenorrhyncha species of Iran is presented. The studied species have been recorded as pests and vectors of diseases to fruit trees. Twenty nine records were contributed to Iranian orchards and 25 of which were from other parts of the world. Hence, the latter group can be considered as potential pests and vectors in Iran. Reviewing the published information on the former group suggests 12 species as pests (4, 2 and 6 species with significant, minor, and unknown recorded economic damage levels, respectively). The pest status of 14 recorded pest species were quite doubtful and 3 of them could not be present in Iran due to the lack of evidence or their limited distribution in other parts of the world. The 4 species which were recognized as well known and significantly important pests belonged to the families: Tropiduchidae (Ommatissus lybicus Bergevin, 1930), Cicadidae (Cicadatra alhageos (Kolenati, 1857)), and Cicadellidae (Hishimonus phycitis (Distant, 1908) and Neoaliturus haematoceps (Mulstant et Rey, 1855)). One species Orosanga japonicus is recording for the first time from Iran and added to the key.

Örneklemelerde sarı yapışkan renk tuzağı ve D-Vac vakumlu böcek toplama aleti kullanılmıştır.Örneklemelerin yapıldığı bahçelerden alınan yaprak örnekleri kültüre alınarak yaprakpirelerinin yumurta parazitoitleri belirlenmiştir. The article reviews the academic contribution of Russian historian and diplomat Nikolay Charykov (1855-1930) to our understanding of the reforms by Peter the Great. In his research, Nikolay Charykov argues that the reforms did not result in a radical break with previous Russia's historical path. He stresses that the cultivation of scientific knowledge and labor skills necessary for modernization started in Russia long before Peter the Great because Russia was part of a European system even before Peter the Great. For example, the author points to Ivan III's marriage to Zoe Palaiologina (Sophia Palaiologina); the employment of captive Livonians by Ivan IV; sending Russian youth to study at Western European universities; Boris Godunov's plans to form a European league of Christian sovereigns. Nikolay Charykov focuses in his studies on the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, pointing to his plans to increase the involvement of Westerners in various spheres of life in Russia. Moreover, Nikolay Charykov shows that the personality of the future Emperor was formed under the influence of Russia's increasing interaction with European countries. He concludes that the development of Russia before Peter led to Peter's reforms. He saw the struggle between Sophia and Peter as an interpersonal struggle for power, which in no way violated the primary trend of Russia's development. Peter's reforms became a logical and natural consequence of the previous processes. The merit of Peter was that he successfully continued the previously started transformations by adding to them his character and thinking, which led to the birth of the Russian Empire.

Abstract:
To explore the history of the changes in monsoon precipitation and their driving mechanisms in the context of global warming, climatology studies using tree-ring stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) were carried out in Shanxi Province, China. Based on a tree-ring δ18O series from Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. on Heng Mountain, a 230-year June–July precipitation sequence from 1784 to 2013 AD was reconstructed that explained 45% of the total variance (44% after adjusting the degrees of freedom). The reconstructed sequence captured the characteristics of the variations in precipitation. Periods of drought occurred mainly in 1820–1840 AD, 1855–1865 AD, 1895–1910 AD, 1925–1930 AD, and 1970–1995 AD, and wet periods occurred mainly in 1880–1895 AD, 1910–1925 AD, and 1935–1960 AD. The dry and wet years in the precipitation reconstruction corresponded well to the years in which disaster events were documented in historical records. A spatial correlation analysis with Climatic Research Unit (CRU)-gridded precipitation data indicated that the reconstructed precipitation provided good regional representation and reflected large-scale June–July precipitation changes in northern China. In addition, the reconstructed precipitation sequence was also significantly correlated with the dry and wet index (DWI) and other tree-ring dry/wet reconstructions from the surrounding areas. The correlation between the reconstructed precipitation and the Asian monsoon index showed that the precipitation can indicate the intensity of the Asian summer monsoon. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was found between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the reconstructed precipitation. At the decadal scale, the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) may co-promote summer precipitation in the study area.

Uroleucon cichorii (Insecta: Hemipteroidea: Rhynchota: Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) is an invasive alien species in the fauna of Belarus. In 1854 the species has been described by C. L. Koch from Germany. For the first time U. cichorii has been noted in Great Britain in 1876, in Estonia – 1894, in Romania – 1896, in Italy – 1900, in Belgium – 1901, in Crimea – 1903, in Latvia – 1924, in Poland –1930, in Netherlands – 1939, in Finland – 1941, in Ukraine – 1945, in France – 1948, in Sweden – 1949, in Norway – 1953, in Denmark – 1954, in Moldavia – 1955, in Austria – 1956, in Czech – 1958, in Hungary – 1959, in Bulgaria – 1960, in European Russia – 1962–1964, in Bosnia and Herzegovina – 1963, in Serbia – 1963, in Lithuania – 1963–1980, in Macedonia – 1964, in Switzerland – 1967, in Spain – 1971, in Sicily –1973, in Corsica – 1973, in Balearic Islands (Mallorca) – 1982, in Belarus – 1986 and Greece – after 1992. It is obvious that this chronological list describes a history of aphidological research rather than spreading of the invider across the European regions. As considered, the species has Mediterranean origin. Outside of Europe the species is known from Near East as well as Central Asia, Korea and North America. As host plants U. cichorii s.str. uses common chicory (Cichorium intibus L.) and related species of Cichorieae (Asteraceae). The species is known as a pest of common chicory (including leaf chicory) and endive. For the first time U. cichorii has been registered in 1986. At present the species is common for C. intibus growing on roadsides and in other ruderal biotopes. During 1986–2018 U. cichorii has been registered in the all regions of the Republic of Belarus. The map of geographic points of registrations is given. It is obvious that the invider’s expansion in the regions of Belarus is finished. The species is holocyclic and monoecious. Feeding on forage plants contributes to the loss of a significant amount of plastic substances, which leads to their dehydration and slow growth, and, as a result, a slight deformation of the stem. Uroleucon cichorii (Insecta: Hemipteroidea: Rhynchota: Sternorrhyncha: Aphididae) is an invasive alien species in the fauna of Belarus. In 1854 the species has been described by C. L. Koch from Germany. For the first time U. cichorii has been noted in Great Britain in 1876, in Estonia – 1894, in Romania – 1896, in Italy – 1900, in Belgium – 1901, in Crimea – 1903, in Latvia – 1924, in Poland –1930, in Netherlands – 1939, in Finland – 1941, in Ukraine – 1945, in France – 1948, in Sweden – 1949, in Norway – 1953, in Denmark – 1954, in Moldavia – 1955, in Austria – 1956, in Czech – 1958, in Hungary – 1959, in Bulgaria – 1960, in European Russia – 1962–1964, in Bosnia and Herzegovina – 1963, in Serbia – 1963, in Lithuania – 1963–1980, in Macedonia – 1964, in Switzerland – 1967, in Spain – 1971, in Sicily –1973, in Corsica – 1973, in Balearic Islands (Mallorca) – 1982, in Belarus – 1986 and Greece – after 1992. It is obvious that this chronological list describes a history of aphidological research rather than spreading of the invider across the European regions. As considered, the species has Mediterranean origin. Outside of Europe the species is known from Near East as well as Central Asia, Korea and North America. As host plants U. cichorii s.str. uses common chicory (Cichorium intibus L.) and related species of Cichorieae (Asteraceae). The species is known as a pest of common chicory (including leaf chicory) and endive. For the first time U. cichorii has been registered in 1986. At present the species is common for C. intibus growing on roadsides and in other ruderal biotopes. During 1986–2018 U. cichorii has been registered in the all regions of the Republic of Belarus. The map of geographic points of registrations is given. It is obvious that the invider’s expansion in the regions of Belarus is finished. The species is holocyclic and monoecious. Feeding on forage plants contributes to the loss of a significant amount of plastic substances, which leads to their dehydration and slow growth, and, as a result, a slight deformation of the stem. In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract:
In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract:
This article presents a species new to science called Phthiracarus paraferrugineus sp. nov., which was recorded in the nature reserve Cisy Staropolskie im. Leona Wyczółkowskiego in Wierzchlas. The authors also give information about new sites of occurrence and comments about the morphology of some species rarely found in Poland—Paratritia baloghi Moritz, 1966 (second record in Poland) and Euphthiracarus reticulatus (Berlese, 1913)—as well as several more common species (Phthiracarus bryobius Jacot, 1930, Phthiracarus clavatus Parry, 1979, Phthiracarus compressus Jacot, 1930, Phthiracarus longulus C.L. Koch, 1841, Phthiracarus nitens Nicolet, 1855). The article also contains a description of a previously unknown developmental stage—the tritonymph of Acrotritia duplicata (Grandjejan, 1953).

Abstract:
Diferente do que pode ser observado na Literatura Norte-Americana, a Literatura Gótica no Brasil apareceu durante o Ultra-Romantismo, através de Álvares de Azevedo e o seu Noite na taverna (1855), mas não criou raízes devido a diferentes razões. No entanto, semelhante às criaturas que habitam a sua narrativa, a Literatura Gótica ressurgiu das trevas no Brasil do início do século vinte para mais uma vez assombrar a cena literária brasileira. Esse ressurgimento ocorreu durante o período histórico conhecido como a República Velha (1889-1930) e, mais especificamente, na época da Belle Époque carioca (1889-1918), quando a ciência e o progresso mudaram a face do Rio de Janeiro. Ao lançar luzes sobre esse obscuro e pouco explorado momento da Literatura Brasileira este trabalho busca contribuir para o entendimento do desenvolvimento do Fantástico e do próprio romance em nosso meio. Para realizar este propósito este artigo pretende demonstrar como os escritores Coelho Neto e João do Rio desempenharam um papel chave no desenvolvimento da Literatura Gótica brasileira pelo diálogo que suas obras apresentaram com as convenções literárias da Literatura Gótica Britânica e Norte-Americana.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Literatura Fantástica; Literatura Gótica; Literatura Brasileira.

Abstract:
This paper examines the contribution of Horae Subsecivae to Joseph Wright's (1855–1930) English Dialect Dictionary (1896–1905) (EDD). Horae Subsecivae (‘spare hours’) is an obscure manuscript glossary that was possibly compiled by Robert Wight of Wotton-under-Edge in c.1777–78, and is now preserved amongst Wright's papers at the Bodleian Library as Bodl. MS Eng. lang. d. 66. Even though it has received little scholarly attention, Horae Subsecivae has a substantial dialect element, with a large number of words cited from Devonshire, Dorset, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire. The manuscript went largely unnoticed by 18th- and 19th-century collections, and remains virtually unknown today perhaps owing to its extensive use of Latin, but it drew the attention of Joseph Wright, who employed it frequently to represent some western dialects. Drawing on the electronic version of the EDD (EDD Online; Markus, 2019a), the paper is situated within forensic dictionary analysis (Coleman & Ogilvie, 2009), which ‘uses evidence-based methodologies to interrogate the dictionaries themselves about decision-making processes involved in their compilation’ (1). In this framework, I combine archival material with quantitative and qualitative approaches to the data retrieved from EDD Online in order to ascertain the proportion of words that are cited from the manuscript, and to assess the treatment they are given. Attention is paid to their function in the context of the dictionary, labels, the western dialects about which the manuscript provides more extensive information, as well as the entries in which it is cited as the only source for words, ascriptions and senses. This paper highlights the outstanding contribution of Horae Subsecivae to the EDD, while stressing that it notably improves our knowledge of lexical variation in the dialects of the South West and the lower West Midlands. They can only benefit from further inspection as they ‘are neither as easily found nor as well researched as those of the north’ (Melchers, 2010: 82).

Аннотация. До проникновения русских землепроходцев и «промышленных людей» скотоводческие племена якутов и занимавшиеся разведением оленей племена эвенов, эвенков и другие народности Севера практически не занимались промыслом соболя и других пушных животных. В этот период соболь занимал всю лесную зону Якутии современной территории Якутии, его численность была высокой. Проникновение «промышленных людей» было связано с резким снижением численности соболя в бассейне р. Енисей. Они стали хищнически добывать соболя с применением огромного количества самоловов-кулемок. Служилые люди обложили местное население ясаком, назначая выплату его пушниной, где основной ясачной единицей служили шкурки соболя. С этого времени соболиный промысел прочно вошел в традиционный уклад аборигенного населения этого региона. В результате интенсивного промысла в пределах Центральной Якутии и прилежащихрайонов современной территории Западной Якутии соболь практически исчез к середине XVII века. Это способствовало проникновению «промышленных людей» на Северо-Восток Якутии, где продолжалось хищническое истребление соболя, что привело к полному исчезновению его в начале XVIII века. Работы по восстановлению запасов соболя в Якутии начались с 1930 года с принятием мер, в число которых входило объявление трехлетнего (1936-1941 гг.) и пятилетнего (1946-1950 гг.) запретов промысла, которые не дали ожидаемых результатов по восстановлению ареала соболя. В связи с этим с 1947 года стала проводиться интродукция во многих районахЯкутии, в т. ч. и в бассейне р. Колыма. В пределах Северо-Восточной Якутии (бассейны рек Яна, Индигирка и Колыма) акклиматизационные работы проводились в 1951-1958 гг., когда было выпущено 1855 особей соболя, в т. ч. в бассейне р. Колыма 724 зверька. В результате этих работ былой ареал соболя был восстановлен ипромысел этого вида начался здесь с 1960-х гг. В последние годы наблюдается интенсификация промысла, что привлекает различного рода скупщиков шкурок соболя, деятельность которых ни одной государственной организацией не контролируется. Кроме того, есть факты, что промысел соболя продолжается в марте-апреле, т. е. начинается неконтролируемый промысел, который может подорвать плотность сложившихся популяций вида и, как следствие, может произойти резкое снижение его численности в отдельных наиболее опромышляемых районах.

In 1980 the Banat Museum in Timişoara purchased from Johann Vastag, a resident of Jimbolia and former clerk ofthe local Craftsmen’s Guild, some items belonging to the guilds from Jimbolia, including four medals, one plaqueand five diplomas, awarded to the local craftsman Peter Schwarz. He was born on January 13, 1873 in Jimbolia.Between 1887 and 1892 he was apprentice for Anton Hicke, barber from Jimbolia, then between 1892 and 1899he trained in Budapest. During this period he specialized in several crafts, including bandaging. Returning toJimbolia, he worked as barber and wig maker, but also as bandager, orthopedist and prostheses maker.He owned a workshop for prostheses in Jimbolia. There, under the guidance of a specialized doctor, a widevariety of specific articles were manually produced. This included prostheses and parts of them, support devices (forarticular inflammations), orthopaedic corsets (for backbone’s affections), bandages for fractures, elastic bandages,orthopaedic shoes and others.Peter Schwarz became known throughout the entire Banat. Until 1914 he had “branches” in Bega-SanktGeorgen (today Žitište in Serbia) and Modosch (today Jaša Tomić in Serbia). He collaborated for many years withDr. Karl Diel (1855-1930), a renowned surgeon and director of the Hospital in Jimbolia.Schwarz participated in local and regional exhibitions but also in famous international fairs. Most of thedistinctions received were for orthopaedic works. He was awarded several gold and silver medals, numerousdiplomas and letters of recognitions. Between 1931 and 1949 Peter Schwarz acted as president of the Craftsmen’sGuild and president of the Craftsmen’s and Merchants’ Casino from Jimbolia. He was married to Margarethe Vacziand had four children: Margarethe, Peter, Stefan and Mathias. He died on September 24, 1963 in Jimbolia andwas interred on 26 September in the local cemetery.This paper presents the medals and diplomas issued to Peter Schwarz, from the collections of the BanatMuseum in Timişoara: the merit medal of the Industrial exhibition in Jimbolia (1908); the Grand Prix, thegolden medal and diploma of the International exhibition in Paris (1910); the golden medal and diploma of theIndustrial, agricultural and modern inventions exhibition in Rome (1911/1912); the golden plaque and honorarydiploma of the Industrial, agricultural and domestic industries exhibition in Jimbolia (1925). Beside these arepresented the honorary diploma of the Agricultural and industrial exhibition in Biled (1924); the “Obermeister”diploma of the “Eisenring” Merchants’ and Craftsmen’s Association from Timişoara (1929) and the certificate forthe medal for “Industrial and commercial merit”, 1st class (1935), awarded to Peter Schwarz on the anniversary of50 years of craftsmanship.The medals and diplomas of Peter Schwarz are proof of a special professional career and of his remarkable skills.His entire life and work in Jimbolia is being remembered, alongside the other personalities of the city from the late19th century and early 20th century.
