Garlic is one of several important vegetable species grown in the Czech Republic. Ditylenchus dipsaci (Kühn, 1857) (Tylenchida: Anguinidae), Aceria tulipae (Keifer, 1938) (Acari: Eriophyidae), Rhizoglyphus echinopus (Fumouze & Robin, 1868) (Acari: Acaridae) and R. robinii Claparède, 1869 (Acari: Acaridae), Suillia lurida (Meigen, 1830) (Diptera: Heleomyzidae) are common pest species found on garlic plants in the Czech Republic. Nowadays Aceria tulipae (Keifer, 1938) is beginning to be considered as the one causing damage. Plodia interpunctella (Hübner, 1813) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Nemapogon granellus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) are small moths which are common pests usually found on stored products. Both of these species larvae were found as the uncommon pests of stored garlic in the Czech Republic in January 2016. Until now, their harmfulness on stored garlic has been reported only from Central America.

Abstract:
More than 90,000 accurate chemical analyses of CO2 in air since 1812 are summarised. The historic chemical data reveal that changes in CO2 track changes in temperature, and therefore climate in contrast to the simple, monotonically increasing CO2 trend depicted in the post-1990 literature on climate-change. Since 1812, the CO2 concentration in northern hemispheric air has fluctuated exhibiting three high level maxima around 1825, 1857 and 1942 the latter showing more than 400 ppm. Between 1857 and 1958, the Pettenkofer process was the standard analytical method for determining atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and usually achieved an accuracy better than 3%. These determinations were made by several scientists of Nobel Prize level distinction. Following Callendar (1938), modern climatologists have generally ignored the historic determinations of CO2, despite the techniques being standard text book procedures in several different disciplines. Chemical methods were discredited as unreliable choosing only few which fit the assumption of a climate CO2 connection.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Historiography has attributed the change of temporal experience in late 19th century to the 1870’s generation. Exploring this hypothesis, this thesis aims to understand the way in which the republican propaganda, revitalized by the monarchy crisis in Brazil, when mobilizing fundamental concepts to formulate its political projects, elaborated expectations for the nation’s future. Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil’s (1857-1938) path is taken as a guide for the analysis, given that he was an active member of the Law School of São Paulo’s propaganda, between 1878 and 1882. Through academic newspapers, public conferences and indoctrination books, Assis Brasil and his colleagues were responsible not only for an intense propaganda activity in support of a new political regime, as they articulated new scientific premises in which they formulated political diagnostics, generally traced from the Brazilian historical experience. This research is based on Reinhart Koselleck’s history of concepts theoretical considerations. The analysis showed that if the vocabulary of the young republicans was modern, since their political concepts carried expectations to be fulfilled in the future, this future was mediated, in some way, by the path of countries that had gone trhough the predicted stages of progress, and indicated the way to surpass the retarded nation’s development.

Abstract:
The study of cultural hybridity in literature remained tied to a theory which defines postcolonial literatures in terms of their oppositional relationship with the West. In this thesis, we attempted to go beyond the “writing back to the center”. We have not ignored the debate over standard criticism but we have chosen to demonstrate by means of this comparative study that the African novel is part of a larger fictional universe. By appropriating the techniques of the Victorian literary tradition associated with Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad, African writers create a useful device for developing greater understanding and improved communication among people from different cultural, racial and ethnic groups. We found striking similarities between the Scottish clan and the African tribe in terms of social organisation and way of life. Like Scott and Hardy, Ngugi and Achebe draw the substance of their novels from the folklore and popular traditions of their communities. African and Victorian novelists have a clear awareness of the human predicament and show how fate can be cruel to the individual

Bergheaud, Lise. Paris 3, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA030075.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims at clarifying the connections between Raymond QUENEAU’s prose works and the narratives from the English-speaking world which he read and listed from 1917 to 1938. On the basis of a rational perusal of QUENEAU’s reading lists, we first delineated a group of ten writers who announce or epitomize literary modernity and whose writings reveal a concurrence, both precocious and lasting, with the French writer’s own texts (Edgar Allan POE, Lewis CARROLL, Joseph CONRAD, Henry JAMES, James JOYCE, William FAULKNER, Gertrude STEIN, Ernest HEMINGWAY, Henry MILLER, Erskine CALDWELL). This empirical foundation having been firmly established, we were then able to go beyond the links which have been widely discussed in current criticism and to identify less detectable and sometimes underrated relations. Within that framework we investigated several issues : how does QUENEAU express his literary originality against the background of modern poetics where the basic features of classical fiction are thoroughly undermined because of the doubt cast upon the validity of meaningful representation? Once seen in the company of his favourite English-speaking authors, how does Queneau use the art of writing to outline an ontology of anxiety when facing the possible annihilation of both mundane reality and beings?

Abstract:
Dawson had received widespread recognition, but died too soon to be given any special award from a scientific body. Twenty years later his achievement was commemorated by the erection of a memorial stone at the site of the gravel pit at Barkham Manor. Sir Arthur Smith Woodward had taken the initiative in this and borne most, if not all, of the expense. The unveiling was done, at his request, by his old friend Sir Arthur Keith at the well-attended ceremony on 22 July 1938. Keith gave a brief but eloquent oration. He dwelt on the wonderful achievement of the keen-sighted amateur Dawson, an achievement which he likened in the history of discovery to that of the French lock-keeper, Boucher de Perthes—the first man, three-quarters of a century ago, to recognize clearly the human workmanship of the Ice Age flint hand-axes of the Somme. The discovery at Piltdown ranked worthily, too, with that of Neanderthal man discovered in 1857, the first known of all fossil men. These discoveries had encountered tremendous opposition before acceptance was won. The claims of Perthes had brought incredulity and set the scientific world a momentous problem, and only after years of stormy argument were these claims conceded; the discovery of Neanderthal man likewise brought disagreement and controversy. But this fossil form was accepted in the end. As Keith said, then came Dawson’s discovery, and this brought the greatest problem of all. But Keith did not go on to claim that all was now well with ‘the earliest known representative of man in Western Europe’, of which he had just finished a laborious re-study. A puzzle it had always been and a puzzle it was still. Keith could not hide his underlying doubt, and ten years later he expressed it again in the Foreword which he wrote at Lady Smith Woodward’s request to Woodward’s own book, The Earliest Englishman, published posthumously in 1948. He declared: ‘The Piltdown enigma is still far from a final solution.’ Why should Keith still express such doubt and bewilderment? But it was no longer surprising.
