This paper identifies an exogenous variation in post–Civil War policy to examine the effect of land reform on racial inequality. The Cherokee Nation, located in what is now Oklahoma, permitted slavery and joined the Confederacy in 1861. During postwar negotiations, the Cherokee Nation agreed to provide free land for its former slaves. Using linked data that follow former slaves in the Cherokee Nation from 1880 to 1900, I find that racial inequality was lower in the Cherokee Nation in both 1880 and 1900. The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797, is widely depicted in Minoan and Mycenaean craftworks from the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1900-1100 BC). Some octopus-shaped funerary gold ornaments from a Mycenaean grave, all of them displaying seven arms, were supposed to portray the so-called seven-armed octopus, Haliphron atlanticus Steenstrup, 1861 (Octopoda: Argonautoidea: Alloposidae). Here it is shown that in fact those octopus-like ornaments cannot represent H. atlanticus because of morphological as well as biogeographical and ecological reasons.

Yet, their sons almost entirely recovered from this wealth shock by 1900, and their grandsons completely converged by 1940.

Between 1843 and 1900, the evangelical Presbyterianism of the Highlands of Scotland diverged from that of Lowland Scotland. That divergence was chiefly the product of Lowland change, as southern evangelicals increasingly rejected Calvinistic theology, conservative practices in worship, and high views of Biblical inspiration. The essay addresses the question why this divergence occurred: why did the Highlands largely reject this course of change? This article argues for the significance of the historical writings of John Kennedy (1819–84), minister of Dingwall Free Church, the ‘Spurgeon of the

In the first half of the 20th century, four Swedish expeditions to Indochina contributed significantly to the knowledge on the herpetofauna of mainland Southeast Asia. The collected material was examined by L. G. Andersson in Stockholm, resulting in the description of seven new species and forms of amphibians and reptiles from Vietnam and Thailand. However, the taxonomic status of three enigmatic frog species described by Andersson, namely Rana scutigera, Oxyglossus laevis var. vittata, and Microhyla fusca, remained doubtful. Summary This article, a successor to the author’s 2002 “Steinthal and Max Müller: Comparative Lives”, attempts to situate the Semiticist and ‘Orientalist’ Ernest Renan in a nexus between the poles represented by Heymann Steinthal (1823–1899) and Friedrich Max Müller (1823–1900). Renan can be viewed as wavering — in the 1840s through 1860s — between (and perhaps developing from) a natural scientific and linguistic orientation influenced by Humboldtians such as August Friedrich Pott (1802–1887) and the Völkerpsychologist Steinthal and a racial ideology in linguistics similar to that of the more

The populations of these native herbivores are generally in equilibrium, although population increases were recorded under certain conditions, causing significant economic loss. The population was monitored during five seasons on sites located in the departments of Florida and Durazno. The insects were categorized into young nymphs (I, II and III), older nymphs (IV and V), and adults. At each sampling time, data from the different sites were grouped to calculate the pe

It is necessary to investigate microstructural details and limits in morphologic variation within and between different coral clades before a revised classification is constructed. Variations in morphologic characters and microstructural details from a population of Dimorpharaea de Fromentel, 1861 (Family Microsolenidae) from Upper Bathonian (Jumara Dome) strata in Kachchh are described.
