The pedagogical and scientific activity of a mechanical engineer, a faculty member (1897–1918) of Riga Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Professor (1904) Mikhail Berlov (Михаил Берлов; 1867–1935) at the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century was related to Riga, as well as the Russian city of Ivanovo- Voznesensk (at present – Ivanovo). M. Berlov was the first Rector of the Ivanovo- Voznesensk Polytechnic Institute (IVPI; 1918–1921), who returned to Riga in 1921, obtained Latvian citizenship, and worked at the Russian Technical School of Nikolai Okolo-Kulak. The research also revealed the contribution of the pedagogue and scientist to the compilation of textbooks that were used in the Russian Empire, including in the territory of present-day Latvia in the first half of the 20th century and in the first years of the Republic of Latvia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The genus Cystacanthus was established by Anderson (1867: 457) and placed in tribe Ruellieae Dumortier (1829: 23) when published. In fact, it is closely related to Phlogacanthus Nees von Esenbeck (1832: 76, 99) and differs only in the corolla shape and indumentum. Thus, many authors merged Cystacanthus with Phlogacanthus (Benoist 1935, Imlay 1939, Brummit 1992, Mabberley 2008). But it was still recognized as a genus independent from Phlogacanthus by many recent authors (Scotland 1992, Scotland & Vollesen 2000, Hu 2002, Hu & Fu 2005, Wu et al. 2003, 2006, Hu et al. 2011). Our recently unpublished molecular analysis, however, showed that species of Cystacanthus are nested within Phlogacanthus and they might be treated as a single genus, Phlogacanthus. Phlogacanthus belongs to tribe Andrographideae Endlicher (1839: 707) and consists of about 35 species distributed in S and SE Asia (Scotland 1992, Scotland & Vollesen 2000, Mabberley 2008, McDade et al. 2008). In the recently published English version of the Flora of China (Hu et al. 2011), eight species were recognized in Cystacanthus. Among these, five species, i.e., Cystacanthus paniculatus Anderson (1867: 458), C. pyramidalis Benoist (1928: 907), C. abbreviatus Craib (1911: 438), C. vitellinus (Roxburgh 1820: 117) Y. F. Deng in Hu et al. (2011: 477) and C. colaniae (Benoist 1936: 109) Y. F. Deng in Hu et al. (2011: 477), already have names in Phlogacanthus; Cystacanthus yangtsekiangensis (Léveillé 1915: 6) Rehder (1935: 315), C. affinis Smith (1916: 103) and C. yunnanensis Smith (1916: 104), still need to be transferred to Phlogacanthus.

Abstract:
In 1935–1936 Konstantin Dmitrievich Balmont (1867–1942) suffered a serious nervous disease that interrupted his literary activity. The treatment, which required large expenses, deprived him of his livelihood, and Russian emigrants joined in helping the sick poet. A well-known public figure Vladimir Feofilovich Zeeler (1874–1954), secretary of the Union of Russian Writers and Journalists in Paris, the driving force and treasurer of the Committee to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Balmont’s literary activity (official English translation: the Committee for the Recognition of the 50 years long literary activity of Constantin Balmont) established at the end of 1935, was particularly active in fundraising. The history of his relationship with the poet is generally known from Balmont’s published letters and poems addressed to Zeeler, and from Zeeler’s memoirs. This paper complements it with the text of the Committee’s appeal, most likely compiled by Zeeler, re-printed in full for the first time, and with the materials of Zeeler’s correspondence with sponsors published for the first time.

Full text
Abstract:
Application of planktonic foraminifera to micropaleontological, paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic research has enjoyed more than 150 years of activity. During the first century, foraminifera were used primarily for biostratigraphic analysis. Although fossil shells were recognized from beach sands and deep sea sediments as early as 1826 (d'Orbigny, 1826; Parker and Jones, 1865), it wasn't until Owen (1867) and the scientific results of the Challenger expedition (Brady, 1884) that the planktonic life habitat of these marine protozoans was clearly established. By the early 20th century, researchers were studying the biology of planktonic foraminifera at the cellular level (Rhumbler, 1901; Le Calvez, 1936), and linking their distributional patterns to regions of the ocean surface (Lohmann, 1920; Schott, 1935).

Full text
Abstract:
The paper looks at syllable restructuring in Early Bislama. The analysis is couched in the framework of Optimality Theory. The empirical evidence considered is from a corpus of pre-World War II records of Early Bislama, covering a period ranging from 1867 to 1935. It is shown that Early Bislama tends to disallow complex syllable margins and employs mostly vowel epenthesis and, to a lesser extent, consonant deletion as repair strategies for the resolution of etymological onset and coda clusters. Also discussed are the quality of the epenthetic vowels (minimally marked vs. contextually coloured), and the relevance of Early Bislama to the transformations undergone by otherwise stable features of English syllable structure.

Abstract:
In Canada, the financial industry rests upon “four pillars.” These are the securities, insurance, trust, and banking sectors. The first three have been, historically, regulated at the provincial level under the rubric of “property and civil rights,” while the fourth has been federally regulated under section 91(15) of the Constitution Act, 1867. As early as 1935, however, a Royal Commission recommended the establishment of a federal securities agency tasked with overseeing federally incorporated companies. Nothing came of that. In the 1960s and until last year, numerous other studies came up with proposals regarding the establishment of a federal securities regulator. Some proposed a federal regular coexisting with provincial counterparts, while others proposed one single federal regulator. How to get the provinces on board varied depending on the study that was conducted.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Out of the 31 species currently referred to Scleropauropus Silvestri, 1902, 17 species are removed and placed in other genera, including the new genus Juxtapauropus (of which Scleropauropus (Scleropauropus) crinitus Remy, 1950 is fixed as the type species) and Hystrichopauropus Remy, 1942, originally described as a subgenus of Scleropauropus and raised here to the status of independent genus. The following new combinations are thus proposed: Allopauropus (A.) lemurum (Remy, 1956), A. (Decapauropus) mameti (Remy, 1959), A. (D.) prunilis (Scheller, 1970), A. (D.) squameus (Remy, 1948), A. (D.) quadriramosus (Scheller, 1995), Juxtapauropus angularis (Scheller, 2002), J. beritae (Scheller, 1997), J. carmelus (Scheller, 1999), J. comatus (Remy, 1958), J. crinitus (Remy, 1950), J. dugdalei (Remy, 1956), J. fissus (Scheller, 1994), J. maurusiacus (Remy, 1960), J. rimatus (Scheller, 1997), Pauropus stephani (Remy, 1957), Stylopauropus (Donzelotauropus) christiani (Scheller, 2007), Hystrichopauropus portitor (Remy, 1935). Two new synonymies are established: Scleropauropopsis Remy, 1957 = Pauropus Lubbock, 1867 and Scleropauropoides Remy, 1957 = Decapauropus Remy, 1957.

Abstract:
In December 1932 J. B. Danquah identified five stages or “ages” in the coastal political history, or the “national history,” of the Gold Coast. This paper may be described as a temporary departure from a preoccupation with “Ages” two, three, and four (1867-1930) and a tentative entry into the study of the fifth: Danquah's post-1930 “Age of Enlightenment.” What follows therefore is more of a shift in time than of space and focus—the area and arena of coastal politics in the colonial Gold Coast. If a new age did dawn in the 1930s, then for an influential core of today's Ghanaianist historians, it would seem that the turning point occurred in 1935. In that year the radical response of I.T.A. Wallace-Johnson and Nnambi Azikiwe (“Zik”) to the Ethiopian crisis galvanized those forces that presaged the later emergence of Kwame Nkrumah, one of history's winners. In sharp contrast, J.B. Danquah, one of history's losers, represented the continuity of past conservatism during—and after—the 1930s.A bold attempt to confirm or contradict the 1935 “discontinuity thesis” is beyond the scope of this progress report on an act of trespass into the 1930s. The modest outcome of the latter is a snapshot of Accra-based politics. It tries to bring into focus several elements: the texture, style, and ‘reach’ of urban-based politics and politicians; the place of the study and teaching of history in anticolonial nationalist thought; and the extent to which rhetoric served as a mask for the pursuit of group or personal grievance and ambition. In short, this paper re-examines an old theme—the relationship between past history and present politics, albeit within the confines of a British colonial state.

Abstract:
Abstract Guixiu 閨秀 (cultivated gentlewomen of the inner chambers) and cainü 才女 (women of talent) arguably became authorly identities (referring to women writing in classical verse) as women's literary culture took shape in Ming-Qing China. However, the guixiu and cainü were gradually eclipsed by their rising “modern” sisters, xin nüxing 新女性 (new women) and nü zuojia 女作家 (women writers), during the late-Qing reform (1890s) and the early-Republican New Culture movement (1910s–1920s). This study provides a historical investigation into two cases of the literary practice of men and women who carried the legacy of their Ming-Qing predecessors into the Republican era: Wang Wenru 王文濡 (1867–1935) and his Xiangyan zazhi 香艷雜誌 (Xiangyan Magazine, 1914–1916) and Gu Xianrong 顧憲融 (1901–1955), who published the Hongfan jingshe nü dizi ji (Collection of Female Disciples from the Abode of Red Brahman, 1928). They reveal the persistence of guixiu culture in a diversified and transformed world of literary production and consumption from the 1910s to the 1920s.

Abstract:
The composition of the aurora borealis became a subject of scientific interest with the introduction of spectroscopy, but for a long time the aurora refused to reveal its secrets. After fifty years of research, the origin of the dominant green line of wavelength 5577 ÅÅ was still a mystery. Only in 1912 did progress finally begin to occur in the understanding of the aurora, a field of research which appealed in particular to Norwegian scientists. Prominent among them was Lars Vegard (1880––1963), who in 1923 suggested a new picture of the upper atmosphere and an explanation of the green line in terms of excitations of frozen nitrogen dust particles. Although apparently confirmed by cryogenic experiments, Vegard's theory was challenged by the Canadian physicist John McLellan (1867––1935) who in 1925, together with his postdoctoral student Gordon Shrum (1896––1985), reproduced the line in experiments with helium-oxygen mixtures. This is the story of how the enigma of the green auroral line was finally resolved and explained by the quantum theory of atoms, namely as a transition between two metastable states of oxygen. It is also the story of two of the period's leading specialists in auroral spectroscopy, their rivalry, and different approaches to the study of the northern light.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Czech astronomer František Nušl (1867–1951) was professor of mathematics, practical astronomy and geometrical optics at Prague Charles University. His scientific contribution to astronomy consisted mainly of inventing and constructing of new astronomical and geodetical instruments. Together with his friend Josef Jan Frič, founder of the Ondřejov Observatory, he developed and improved the circumzenithal telescope (1899–1903–1906–1922–1932), a portable instrument with a mercury horizon for determining the geodetic position using the Gauss method of equal altitudes. This instrument won the gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris in 1937. Nušl, independently of Ernst Öpik, invented the wobbling mirror for determining the velocity of meteors by visual observation, and constructed an unique guiding system for the Ondrejov astrograph etc. The organizational activities of Frantisek Nušl were considerably rich, too: He was one of the founders of the Czech Astronomical Society in 1917, in the years 1922–1948 he served as its president. From 1918 until his retirement in 1937 he was the director of the Ondrejov Observatory, 40 km south of capital city of Prague, lectured astronomy at the Prague university and held many popular lectures including regular courses in radio broadcasting. František Nušl was member of several commisions of international scientific unions; he organized the 3rd General Assembly of IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics) in Prague 1927, and in IAU (International Astronomical Union) he was elected as Vice-President in the years 1928–1935. One can conclude that he was the main person who formed the Czech astronomy in the interwar period.

“I Believe that a Designated Role on Earth is There for Me as Well”. Unknown Letters from Jan Otrębski to Jan Rozwadowski in the Academic Library of the Polish Academy of Art and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences In Kraków The Special Collections Department of the PAU and PAN Scientific Library in Krakow stores the correspondence of the eminent Indo-European linguist, professor of the Jagiellonian University, Jan Michał Rozwadowski (1867–1935). The collection includes the letters and postcards of Jan Szczepan Otrębski (1889–1971) and covers the period of thirteen years (1917–1930). It contains a lot of information on the considerations and doubts of the future Baltic linguist J. Otrębski, who at the moment was just starting his scientific career. Particularly clear is the thread of doubts about the rightness of choosing a career in science, and the lack of faith in one’s own abilities and the usefulness for science that often appears. The author of the letters repeatedly seeks advice and asks for help from professor J.M. Rozwadowski, who was then highly respected in the world of Indo-European studies. In the letters we can also find a considerable amount of the author’s reflections on various issues of Indo-European linguistics that bother him, which were later recognized as an innovative approach in the study of Baltic languages.

Abstract:
The land snails of the family Amphibulimidae occurring within northwestern South America are critically examined and notes on their distribution are given. The total number of taxa discussed is 61 (7 Dryptus, 54 Plekocheilus); of these, four Colombian Dryptus and 32 Plekocheilus species are included. The following new species are described: Plekocheilus (P.) bigener, P. (P.) incognitus, Plekocheilus (Eurytus) camaritagua, P. (E.) labiosus, and P. (E.) paraguas. The following nominal taxa are now synonymized: Plekocheilus (P.) speciosus (Pfeiffer, 1854) = P. (P.) plectostylus (Pfeiffer, 1848); Plekocheilus (Eurytus) couturesi Ancey, 1900 = P. (P.) glandiformis (Lea, 1838); Plekocheilus (Aeropictus) latilabris (Pfeiffer, 1855) = P. (A.) succineoides (Petit de la Saussaye, 1840); Plekocheilus (Eurytus) virgatus (Pilsbry, 1935) = P. (E.) mabillei (Crosse, 1867) = P. (E.) pulicarius (Reeve, 1848). Also, Simpulopsis fulguratus Miller, 1878 is now considered a junior subjective synonym of Simpulopsis (Eudioptus) citrinovitrea (Moricand, 1836). For the following species, precise localities are given for the first time: Dryptus stuebeli (Martens, 1885), Plekocheilus (Aeropictus) cathcartiae (Reeve, 1848), P. (E.) cardinalis (Pfeiffer, 1853), P. (Eurytus) episcopalis auriformis (Da Costa, 1904), P. (E.) episcopalis corticosus (Sowerby, 1895), and P. (E.) lynciculus (Deville & Huppé, 1850). Newly recorded for the Colombian malacofauna are the following taxa: Plekocheilus (P.) couturesi (Ancey, 1900), P. (Eurytus) piperitus (Sowerby I, 1837). The following taxa are excluded from the Colombian fauna: Dryptus funckii (Nyst, 1843), Plekocheilus (Aeropictus) veranyi (Pfeiffer, 1848), Plekocheilus (Eurytus) jimenezi (Hidalgo, 1872).

Abstract:

The focus of this article is on the biography and medical activity of Gisela Januszewska (nee Rosenfeld) in Austro-Hungarian (AH) occupied Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) between 1899 and 1912. Rosenfeld, later Januszewska and then Kuhn(ova) by marriage, was the fifth of a total of nine official female physicians who were employed by the AH administration to improve the health and hygienic conditions among Bosnian and Bosnian Muslim women. In 1893, Gisela Kuhn moved from Brno, Moravia to Switzerland to pursue her medical studies; she was awarded her Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from the University of Zurich in 1898. In the same year, she took up her first position as a local health insurance doctor for women and children in Remscheid but was prohibited from practising in the German Empire. In 1899, she successfully applied to the AH authorities for the newly established position of a female health officer in Banjaluka and began working there in July 1899. She lost her civil service status upon marrying her colleague, Dr Wladislaw Januszewski, in 1900 but carried out her previously officially assigned tasks as a private physician. In 1903, she was employed as a ‘woman doctor for women’ at the newly established municipal outpatient clinic in Banjaluka. Upon her husband’s retirement in 1912, the couple left BH and settled in Graz, Styria. After, World War I Januszewska ran a general medical practice in Graz until 1935 and worked as a health insurance-gynaecologist until 1933. She received several AH and Austrian awards and medals for her merits as a physician and a volunteer for humanitarian organisations. Upon Austria’s annexation to Nazi Germany 1938, however, she was classified a Jew and was deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp (Terezin, Bohemia), where she died in 1943.

Conclusion. Gisela Januszewska, nee Rosenfeld (1867–1943) viewed her medical practice as a social medicine mission which she put into practice as a ‘woman doctor for woman’ in Banjaluka, BH (1899–1912) and Graz, Austria (1919–1935).

Abstract:
This article shows how the enduring admiration people have for the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) is explained by this principle of Aesthetic Realism, stated by the founder of this philosophy, the great American poet and critic, Eli Siegel: “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves.” Scholars have written of Wright’s contradictions: his charm and his arrogance, the warmth of his interior designs and his coldness to persons near to him. The authors show that like people everywhere, Wright was trying in his life to put together opposites in himself, including the same opposites he was able to compose magnificently in his best architectural work: most particularly, the opposites of inside and outside, “the snug and exterior.” Two early examples discussed are his 1893 Gale House and the Heurtley House of 1902. Wright’s love of nature led to his concept of organic architecture: buildings inspired by, and at one with, their environment. A masterful example discussed in detail is his 1935 house design Fallingwater, built dramatically above a waterfall. The authors also show how two works from very different points in Wrightʼs long career — the 1904 Unity Temple, and the Guggenheim Museum, completed in 1960 — are opportunities for people to know ourselves better now. The explanation lies in the beautiful way each structure puts opposites together.

Abstract:
Tanulmányunk célja a kalocsai érseki főgimnázium dualizmus kori múltjának társadalomtörténeti aspektusú elemzése (vö. Sasfi, 2001, 2006). Azaz a legkiválóbb intézményeket kereste? Erre a kérdésre kutatásunkban igyekeztünk választ adni. Eredményeik alapján utóbbiak körében a Horthy-korszakban a kalocsai érseki főgimnázium a 29–33. hely egyikén állt. A (fő)nemesség iskoláztatásának a témája a nemzetközi szakirodalomban is megjelent. Saját kutatásunkra rátérve, egyetlen iskola, a Jézus Társasága vezetése alatt álló kalocsai érseki főgimnázium példáján keresztül arra a kérdésre kerestük a választ, mely iskolákat preferálták a főnemes ifjak a kiegyezést követően. Kutatásunkban néhány további szempont szerint is megvizsgáltuk a Kalocsán tanuló főnemes diákokat: a szülők lakhelye, foglalkozása, a diákok tanulmányi státusza, tanulmányaik hossza, pályaválasztás. Mielőtt saját elemzésünket ismertetjük, rövid áttekintést adunk az iskola történetéről.

Abstract:
И. Abstract:
The article is devoted of detailed of analysis of the illustrative cycle of the two Ukrainian artists, followers of the Boychuk school — Ber Blank (1897–1957) and Moses Fradkin (1904–1974) to the famous novel «The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak» (1867) by Belgian novelist Charles De Coster. Their graphic interpretation is both reflection of the totalitarian contradictions of their era and challenge to its conventions. Their actual discourse is not devoid of doom: they are contemporaries of Stalinist dictatorship, they are also its victims. But they are trying metaphorically show horror of their time, embodied, for example, in the torture of the Inquisition, the persecution of dissidents. Subsequent illustrators of that novel were not so pessimistic (especially, Evgeniy Kibrik, in the future — the brilliant illustrator of Nikolay Gogol and Romain Rolland), but they paid more attention to Thyl Ulenspiegel, informal Flanders rebel leader. However, illustrative cycle of Ber Blank and Moses Fradkin is rather a novel without a hero. They prefer to depicts crowds of people engulfed in suffering (as it was accepted at Boychuk’s school). There is little resistance to the invaders, which feels doomed in 1930s. But much attention is paid to the denunciation to the representatives of the clergy (they were especially persecuted by Soviet power). It is interesting that the artists also ignored comic element of Coster’s novel, which was discovered by artists of the post-war era based on the theory of laughed culture of Mikhail Bakhtin. However, illustrative cycle of Blank and Fradkin is not only monument of its time. Long before the Second World War and Holocaust, they already foresaw the world catastrophes on the material of the European history of XVIth century. At same time, they did not abandon of expressive and decorative style characteristic of their teachers, and even continued this style, slightly modifying.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The forficula species group of the Holarctic genus Dichagyris is revised based on the survey of type specimens and relevant materials of state and private collections. D. turana (Staudinger, [1892]) stat. rev. and D. furiosa (Bang-Haas, 1912) stat. rev. are elevated to specific status and lectotypes are designated, D. forficula devota (Christoph, 1884) stat. rev. is downgraded to subspecies. The specific status of D. erubescens (Staudinger, [1892]) and D. contermina (Corti, 1930) is confirmed. The junior synonymy of D. devota eremica (Amsel, 1935) with D. forficula devota (Christoph, 1884) was constated. Seven new subspecies (D. forficula akdagestana ssp. n., D. forficula pseudoturana ssp. n., D. forficula chitralensis ssp. n., D. turana cisiliensis ssp. n., D. furiosa kugitanga ssp. n., D. furiosa griseoerythra ssp. n. and D. contermina melanographa ssp. n.) are described, with considerations on the phyletic lines and biogeography of the taxa of the D. forficula species complex.
