Abstract:
Late Mississippian and earliest Pennsylvanian trilobite faunas of North America are dominated by the Paladin and Kaskia clades. Phylogenetic analysis of middle Carboniferous species of these clades demonstrates the close ancestral relationship between these groups. The Kaskia clade consists of eight species: K. chesterensis Weller, 1936, K. osagensis (Cisne, 1967), K. longispina (Strong, 1872), K. wilsoni (Walter, 1924), K. genevievensis (Walter, 1924), K. rosei (Cisne, 1967), K. gersnai n. sp., and K. rollinsi n. sp. Kaskia Weller, 1936 ranges from late Osagean to middle Chesterian (early Visean-early Serpukhovian) and is restricted to cyclothemic shelf and nearshore deposits. Species of Kaskia appear to have evolved in areas of shallow water and high environmental stress. The Paladin clade consists of 12 species including previously named species P. morrowensis (Mather, 1915), P. girtyianus Hahn and Hahn, 1970, P. rarus Whittington, 1954, P. helmsensis Whittington, 1954, and P. moorei (Branson, 1937). New species belonging to this clade are Paladin moorefieldensis n. sp., P. pleisiomorphus n. sp., P. imoensis n. sp., P. mangeri n. sp., and P. wapanukaensis n. sp. This group ranges from the early Chesterian to early Morrowan (late Viseanlate Bashkirian). Species of Paladin appear to be confined to outer shelf shelf-edge and off-shelf facies where presumably deeper water environments existed. This is manifested in their paleogeographic distribution, which is paleoenvironmentally controlled.

Abstract:
The taxonomy of ophiuroids collected in 2009 and 2011, from biogenic habitats across the New Zealand continental shelf, is reviewed. Ophionereis novaezelandiae Mortensen, 1936, and its junior synonym Ophionereis terba Baker & Devaney, 1981from South-Eastern Australia, is now recognised as a distinct species, and has been removed from synonymy with Ophionereis fasciata Hutton, 1872. Ophiacantha abyssicola var. otagoensis Fell, 1958 is also recognised as a distinct spe-cies and has been removed from synonymy with Ophiacantha brachygnatha Clark H L, 1928. Amphiura eugeniae var. latisquama Mortensen, 1924 is raised to species rank and Amphioplus longirima Fell, 1952 treated as a synonym of A. latisquama. Ophiolycus farquhari McKnight, 2003 is transferred to the genus Ophiologimus. The diagnostic characters of several other species are reviewed and colour descriptions and images are included where available. The tropical species Ophiacantha longidens Lyman, 1878, Ophiotreta valenciennesi (Lyman, 1879) and Ophiobyrsa intorta (Koehler, 1922) are reported from New Zealand waters for the first time.

Abstract:
Until recently, Russian spirlin found on the territory of the Udmurt Republic was indicated as a subspecies of the riffle minnow Alburnoides bipunctatus rossicus Bloch, 1872. According to osteological and morphometric parameters it is now isolated as an independent species – Russian spirlin Alburnoides rossicus Berg, 1924. Russian spirlin is a very important component of running water ecosystems. Gregarious is typical for this species – it form large clumps in rivers where it lives, outnumbering all other components of ichthyocenosis. The food spectrum of Russian spirlin A. rossicus from Cheptsa River in the Udmurt Republic was studied. It consists of 65 components, among them 9% are algae and higher plants, 86% – invertebrates, 5% – organic residues, detritus and mineral components. Two types of insects were found: benthic forms, and land-air ones. Recovered size of species of benthic invertebrates suggests that spirlin consumes all stages of aquatic insects – larvae of different ages, pupae and imago. According to food spectrum Russian spirlin may be considered a typical polyphage. The feeding habit of Russian spirlin from Cheptsa River is a high ecological plasticity. This allows it to use the various food items, in developing mass, regardless of their nutritional value and the location of the river channel (river bottom or the water column). In the absence of zooplankton or its low concentration, the juvenile spirlin uses drift of benthic invertebrates for food. Upon reaching sexual maturity spirlin mostly eats phytoplankton and zoobenthos. Due to this divergence in the diet of individuals Russian spirlin’s intraspecific competition for food is weakened.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The systematics of the fossil representatives of Ranina Lamark, 1810, has been discussed by several authors in the last century, showing some problematics above all due to the lack of a close diagnosis of the type species (<em>R. ranina</em>) and to the scarce number of well-preserved type series of each fossil species. However, based upon a close comparison among the type series of each species, authors’ original descriptions, and the main diagnostic characters of <em>Ranina</em>, this preliminary review finds that twelve species have to be considered as doubtful species within <em>Ranina</em>, as follows: <em>?Ranina americana</em> Withers, 1924, <em>?R. berglundi</em> Squires &amp; Demetrion, 1992,<em> ?R. bouilleana</em> A. Milne Edwards, 1872, <em>?R. brevispina</em> Lőrenthey, 1898,<em> ?R. granulosa</em> A. Milne Edwards, 1872, <em>?R. griesbachi</em> Noetling, 1897, <em>?R. haszlinskyi</em> Reuss, 1859, <em>?R. libyca</em> (Van Straelen, 1935),<em> ?R.</em> <em>molengraaffi</em> Van Straelen, 1924,<em> ?R. oblonga</em> (von Münster, 1840), <em>?R. ornata</em> De Angeli &amp; Beschin, 2011, and<em> ?R. speciosa</em> (von Münster, 1840). Four species have to be considered as <em>Ranina nomina dubia</em>, as follows: <em>Ranina elegans</em> Rathbun, 1945, <em>R. hirsuta</em> (Schafhäutl, 1863), <em>R. lamiensis</em> Rathbun, 1945, and<em> R. tejoniana</em> Rathbun, 1926. <em>Ranina</em> <em>bavarica</em> Ebert, 1887,<em> R. fabri</em> Schafhäutl, 1863, and<em> R. helii</em> Schafhäutl, 1863, have to be assigned to Lophoranina Fabiani, 1910. <em>Ranina</em> <em>cuspidata</em> Guppy, 1909, has to be assigned to Calappa Weber, 1795 (Calappidae De Haan, 1833). Finally,<em> R. burleighensis</em> Holland in Holland &amp; Cvancara, 1958, has to be considered as doubtful species within Decapoda.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the life of Nicolas Politis, an international liberal jurist of Greek origin but of French expression, born in the late 19th century. Almost unknown to the Greek and French historiography, he played a major role in the socio-political scene of his time not only as a French academic, theorist and expert but also as a Greek diplomat, politician and an international arbiter and lawyer. In doing so, he intervened at three levels of action, that of France, Greece and new international institutions in The Hague, Paris and Geneva. Originating from a well-known family of scientists on the island of Corfu. Nicolas Politis managed to be at the center of an international elite committed to reorganizing international relations, in the years following the First World War. The thesis examines the way his internationalist discourse and his political career were constructed in terms of his genius, and his strategy to approach the socio-political situation of his time. It provides valuable information on his personal life and his career as a scientist through a presentation of the events of the period he lived in, as well as, an analysis of the evolution of his thinking and doctrine which combined his Greek patriotism, his political liberalism and his internationalism. In this study, political history, intellectual history, history of institutions, history and philosophy of international law are in a constant interaction

Abstract:
Modern perceptions of time are divested of their traditional attributes : sacredness and transcendance. Previous responses of mythical works of art to the anxiety of the end and to the fantasm of victory over entropy and death are rejected : circular time, immortality, eternity. But these outgrown phenomenologies are "subjacent" to modern fantastic genre, especially to Gautier, Kafka, Ray, Lovecraft, Tolkien and Borges. Except for Tolkien, these sacred corpses are means and not ends through which to initiate a common aesthetic priority and tradition : the value of our pleasure in imagining existence rewritten differently. Thus, they all organise a process of time renewal and, through this, a resistance of the imagination to the thought of their time, originating from the fascination for rationality, materiality and linearity ; all this by rewriting myths and their mataphysical outcomes

There are many German travel stories as well as works of fiction focusing on overseas territories, in the first place on the United States of America. These texts that were written in the course of the nineteenth century and during the first half of the twentieth century represent a noteworthy phenomenon that has been little commented on and lends itself well to a historical approach. Indeed, these pieces of writing accompany, comment on and vilify the German mass migration to the American continent, especially to North America. The present work attempts to account for the German adventure novel the plot of which takes place overseas. In so doing it tries to define the specificity of the German perspective. Twelve novels have been selected that were written by several german-speaking authors very different from one another: the German Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872), Karl May (1842-1912), Ernst Friedrich Löhndorff (1899-1976), the Austro-American Karl Postl aka Charles Sealsfield (1793-1864), The Austrian Franz Kafka (1883-1924), the Germano-Mexican B. Traven (1882-1969). Following an introductory chapter dealing with the horizon of aspirations in nineteenth-century Germany are eleven chapters each devoted to the study of one selected novel. The analysis of these works shows some striking features that belong to the genre either at the level of the aesthetics, logic, set of themes and ideological patterns or at the level of axiological confrontations between a rational, civilized world and the so-called "savageness". Other items in the study are the figure of the literary adventurer, the different approaches to the alterity phenomenon, the recurrent temptation of transgression, the insertion of the text in a pre-existent codes and stereotypes system

Abstract:
The Serviço de Aviação da Armada (Navy Air Service), more commonly known as Aviação Naval (Naval Aviation), was created on the 28th September 1917. Although it was activated at that moment in time due to the urgency to establish an effective antisubmarine defence following U-boat attacks along the portuguese coast, Naval Aviation origins are strongly connected to the advent of aviation in Portugal at the dawn of the 20th Century, as well to the drive Sacadura Cabral instilled into it and the initiatives he planned. Following the Armistice, Sacadura Cabral embarked his Service into some major flights, including the first South Atlantic Air Crossing. This was not only a unique, joyful moment during the Portuguese 1st Republic but also the most remarkable Portuguese aviation achievement, which would only have been surpassed if Sacadura Cabral’s project for the first round-the-world flight had reached fruition. The preparations for this last project triggered a series of events that led to his loss in the North Sea, an occurrence that entailed the end of the most remarkable period in Portuguese Naval Aviation history. Despite the prestige earned from these great accomplishments, Naval Aviation went through a period where the political context was not always favourable to its existence and the economical one never was. Due to this, it had to fight a constant struggle for survival; how Naval Aviation managed to persevere in such a hostile environment, with a huge lack of resources in all its functional elements, especially personnel and infrastructures, is even more remarkable. But it was this struggle for survival that prompted its leader, Sacadura Cabral, to seek opportunities to the value of his Service, which led to some of the most renowned Portuguese aviation achievements.
