Abstract:
The article discusses the history of publication of two works by Alexander Kuprin (1870–1938) and Ivan Shmelev (1873–1950) in “Russkaya Gazeta” (“Russian newspaper”), which is an emigrant newspaper issued in Paris in 1923–1925. Their publication remained unnoticed by modern researchers. The article examines Kuprin’s participation in this periodical, as well as the historical context of Kuprin’s article “Diaries and Letters” (1923) published in this newspaper at the beginning of 1924, and dedicated to the publication of the “Diary of Emperor Nicholas II”. In particular, the author discusses the history of the “Diary”’s publication in Berlin in 1923 and the peculiarities of the reaction to its appearance among the Russian emigration. He also discusses the history of the publication of I.S. Shmelev’s political fairy tale “Preobrazhenets” (1919–1923–1927). Particular attention is paid to the edition of this tale, which was published together with Kuprin’s article in the same issue of “Russkaya Gazeta” (January 7, 1924). For the first time, the article presents the full text of Kuprin’s article, as well as the text of Shmelev’s fairy tale in its 1923 edition, in comparison with its final version published in 1927.

Abstract:
A slag treatment method was proposed to recycle rejected electrolytic manganese metal. To improve the sulfur removal ratio, computational fluid dynamics and experimental studies of the sulfur transfer behavior during the refining process were carried out. Experiments of slag-metal reaction for desulfurization were carried out using an electric resistance furnace at temperatures ranging from 1773 K to 1923 K. A transient three-dimensional coupled numerical model was established to represent the three-phase flow, heat and mass transfer in the experiment. The desulfurization rate was described by a metallurgical kinetics module, which was related to the slag composition, the interfacial tension coefficient, the flow and the temperature of the melt. The predicted sulfur content agreed reasonably well with the measured data. The temperature of the fluids at the outer side of the crucible was higher than that at the center, resulting in a larger sulfur partition ratio and a more vigorous flow. The sulfur transfer rate was higher at the outer edge of the molten slag–molten manganese interface. The sulfur removal ratio increased from 51.4% to 85.1% with a change in heating temperature from 1773 K to 1873 K, and slightly dropped to 83.3% when the heating temperature increased to 1923 K. The heating temperature of 1873 K is the optimal choice for recycling in the present work.

Abstract:
In order to investigate the Chinese representatives from two genera of the tribe Oodini LaFerté-Sénectère, 1851, twenty-three Palaearctic and Oriental species of the genera Lachnocrepis LeConte, 1853 and Oodes Bonelli, 1810 are taxonomically reviewed. Because the species in question share a high degree of morphological similarity they are grouped in the “Oodes generic group”. The character-analysis showed that seven species belong to Oodes, including five species to Oodes s.str. and two species to Lachnocrepis (downgraded to subgenus). The remaining sixteen species are classified in three genera: ten species in Pseudoodes gen. n. (type species: Oodes cribristernis Bates, 1892), two species in Sundaoodes gen. n. (type species: Sundaoodes hainanensis sp. n.), and four species in Nothoodes gen. n. (type species: Oodes angustatus Lorenz, 2005). The taxa of Oodes s.str. and Pseudoodes gen. n. are arranged in two and four species groups, respectively. Eleven species from three genera, including six new to science, are found in China: Oodes (Oodes) echigonus Habu & Baba, 1960, Oodes (Lachnocrepis) desertus Motschulsky, 1858, Oodes (Lachnocrepis) japonicus (Bates, 1873), Pseudoodes cribristernis (Bates, 1892) (first record for China), Pseudoodes rambouseki (Jedlička, 1931), Pseudoodes ampliusculus, sp. n. (type locality: Mingfenggu Valley, Jiangfengling Mountains, Hainan), Pseudoodes emeishanicus, sp. n. (type locality: Xixinsuo Temple, Emei Shan, Leshan City, Sichuan), Pseudoodes hunanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Xiaozhuangping, Tianping Shan, Sangzhi County, Hunan), Pseudoodes leigongshanicus, sp. n. (type locality: Xijiang Town, Leigong Shan, Leishan County, Guizhou), Pseudoodes tianlinensis, sp. n. (type locality: Cenwanglao Shan, Tianlin County, Guangxi), and Sundaoodes hainanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Nada Town, Danzhou City, Hainan). Two further new species, Sundaoodes kalimantanensis, sp. n. (type locality: Bukit Liang Mount, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia) and Nothoodes bharat, sp. n. (type locality: Dwarakapuram Village, Naidupet Mandal, Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh, India), are also described. The following new synonymies are proposed: Oodes parallelus Motschulsky, 1858, syn. n. of Oodes helopioides (Fabricius, 1792); Oodes parallelogrammus Motschulsky, 1858, syn. n. of Oodes helopioides (Fabricius, 1792); Oodes prolixus Bates, 1873, syn. n. of Oodes desertus Motschulsky, 1858; Simous viridissimus Louwerens, 1951, syn. n. of Pseudoodes coelestinus (Chaudoir, 1882). The synonymy of Oodes hahni Reitter, 1908 with Oodes desertus Motschulsky, 1858 is confirmed. Also, the following new combinations are introduced: Oodes japonicus (Bates, 1873), comb. n. of Lachnocrepis japonica Bates, 1873; Pseudoodes vicarius (Bates, 1873), comb. n. of Oödes vicarius Bates, 1873; Pseudoodes coelestinus (Chaudoir, 1882), comb. n. of Oodes coelestinus Chaudoir, 1882; Pseudoodes subcoriaceus (Chaudoir, 1882), comb. n. of Oodes subcoriaceus Chaudoir, 1882; Pseudoodes cribristernis (Bates, 1892), comb. n. of Oodes cribristernis Bates, 1892; Pseudoodes rambouseki (Jedlička, 1931), comb. n. of Holosoma rambouseki Jedlička, 1931; Nothoodes taprobanae (Andrewes, 1923), comb. n. of Oodes taprobanae Andrewes, 1923; Nothoodes longus (Andrewes, 1940), comb. n. of Oodes longus Andrewes, 1940; Nothoodes angustatus (Lorenz, 1998), comb. n. of Oodes angustatus Lorenz, 1998. Lectotypes are designated for Oodes parallelus Motschulsky, 1858, Oodes parallelogrammus Motschulsky, 1858, Oodes desertus Motschulsky, 1858, Oodes cribristernis Bates, 1892, Oodes hahni Reitter, 1908, Oodes thessalonicensis Schatzmayr, 1909, Oodes helopioides var. fiorii Porta, 1923, and Holosoma rambouseki Jedlička, 1931. A key to the species, diagnoses, descriptions, notes on type specimens, relationships, distribution, bionomics when available, and figures of body, genitalia and other characters useful for taxonomy are provided. Numerous new records, including first country records for Romania, Israel, Nepal, China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, and Indonesia, are registered.

Abstract:
We have compared how irony was used by two women writers at the beginning of the 20th century: the French Colette and the Italian Clelia Romano Pellicano. We have examined the navels of Claudine's series by Colette, and the two collections of short-stories Coppie and Novelle calabresi by Pellicano. The missing biography of the Italian writer has also been reconstructed. For this analysis we have revised the notion of feminine irony (and humor) and of women's comedy, reconstrueting the panorama of the existing theories and reconsidering some studies about the interdiscursive and relational dimensions proper of literary irony. We have historically contextualised our analysis identifying the characteristics of Belle Epoque's esprit and the relationship between caricatures and literary charge. We have picked out the ternis of the debate of this period about the excess and the quality of that female literature disqualified by the adjective « muliebre ». In this debate Colette has appeared as term of comparison for the works of the Italian women witers. Pellicano and Colette's irony emerges as a discursive strategy through which it is possible to inaugurate a "caring" conflict with the Other, in order to uncover the contradictions of their time and to deal with delicated subjets or themes considered awkward (i. E. The authorities' corruption or the relationship between sexes). Both women writers were related to the literary realistic model of their time by an irreverent way. We have studied it also reflecting upon the relationship between irony and Naturalism. Through irony and even self-irony about their status as women writers, they have created a relation with their readers

Abstract:
This study explores the field of intersection between text and sexuality, as it proposes to examine the inscription of a feminine subjectivity within the fictional writings of dorothy richardson (pilgrimage), katherine mansfield (the collected short stories), and jean rhys (the left bank, quartet, after leaving mr mackenzie, and good morning, midnight). This analysis of gender takes root in the lacanian theories of the symbolic order of language in order to identify particular enunciative patterns, based on the practice of literature as a reading activity. The figure of the female reader in the text appears in these texts as the narrative locus for the exposition of the discursive nature of feminity and of gender identity, bound up with the sexual implications of signifying processes. By writing feminity into their texts, dorothy richardson, katherine mansfield and jean rhys direct the writing activity toward a semantic loss, and, through diferrent narrative strategies, offer a vision of reading as a feminine form of discourse, as the discourse of the female gender

Full text
Abstract:
The period 1870-1914 highlight a striking negative contrast between images of a victorious Germany and images of a defeated France. The study of “Germanism” as a psychological representation of this contrast allows us to “deconstruct” the causal relation existing between the latter and the birth of the “post-Sedan” nationalism dominated by Barrès, Maurras and Péguy. Through a psychological approach, "Germanism" as seen by these three authors is examined from process to product, then compared. For Barrès, it is dominated by the anguish of weakened France opposed to Germany which is characterised by the power of abstraction; for Mauras, it is dominated by the recognition of the “original German man”; and for Péguy, it is dominated by a brutal modernity. Whereas these processes are heterogeneous and do show the differences between these authors, the products are rather homogeneous in that they all reject the German values. “Germanism”, which results in the same psychological reaction, that is a “refusal to suffer” and a desire for a “self-assertion for a “redefined France”, starts then regulates the “post-Sedan” nationalism. This ideology aiming at carrying out a “strengthening” action that first starts from the inside thus appears as a method of social conditioning of France. The different personalities of these authors can also be found in the heterogeneity of the “post-Sedan” nationalisme, whose main common aim lies in this frenzied and obsessional willingness: “we must wage war against the German empire, win this war and break up the Empire”

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between childhood and poetical feeling to consider how childhood impressions can implicitly model a modern narrative aesthetics. A corpus of narratives by Pierre Loti, Marcel Proust, Colette, Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield serves to analyse the fictional inscription of child characters and show the likeness between allegedly childish characteristics and traits related to a certain conception of the modern narrative, at the corner of the 19th and 20th centuries. Among these characteristics : the predominance of subjectivity, a poetical feeling pervading the text, and a discontinuous narrative focusing on moments of being. The analysis summons both literary and scientific representations of the child, from 18th to 20th century. It convokes the theories of the first child-psychologists along with Romantic texts figuring child poets and questions the premise, according to Baudelaire, that genius is based on « childhood recovered ». In doing so it means to shed light on the phantasmatic conceptions of the child implicitly activated by the authors of these narratives. The child’s proverbial imagination and credulity, the presumed authenticity of an age closer to origins are as many utopic projections conveyed by literature and cautioned, to a certain point, by philosophic and scientific thoughts until the first third of the 20th century. This study examines their sources and their stakes to understand what accounts for them and to investigate their resonance with certain writing dimensions, such as poetry, mysticism and impressionism

Abstract:
More than a hundred years after its invention, where is psychoanalysis now? Its crisis, even its disappearance, is regularly announced, but is it psychoanalysis as a subject which is threatened, or rather its practice : the therapeutic method forged by Freud at the turn of the 20th century and which bas endured since then, under the form called "the typical cure"? Although relatively unchanged, this method was the source of many conflicts in its history : violent conflicts between Freud and two of his disciples, Rank and Ferenczi, in the twenties, passionate conflicts around Jacques Lacan and his analytic revolution from the fifties. Each time, and implicitly, the same interrogations are back : the power of the method, its efficiency, the implication of the transfer, and the purpose of the cure. So many themes which convey the technical difficulties and the dead ends which were reached. So many flaws which involved the analyst in his/her function and in his/her role. Have the debates been more virulent when concerning this aspect of the question? If the answers have been different according to the times, the global movement has been the preservation of the invention. To the propositions made by some to modify the technique (Rank, Ferenczi, Viderman, Roustang), was answered the concern of the community to stand up for the purity of the method. At what price, depending on which stakes and with which consequences ?

Abstract:
Even if jesters are very popular characters, the very concept barely exists in critical vocabulary. Jesters, which play an important role in every society, can be defined throughout the history of madness, implicating a sociological and anthropological approach, as well as throughout the history of theater, located at the cross-section of arts and literature. This research sheds light on the characteristics and functions of jesters in the 20th century. The 20th century was a post-metaphysical age marked by two significant transformations. First, a “crisis of purpose” defined by Jean-François Mattéi as a loss of meaning in life. Since jesters invite us into a socio-political and a metaphysical critique, it only makes sense to question their role in that matter. Secondly, the 20th century was home to a revolution in drama, seen through linguistic experimentations, the introduction of space in theatrical theory and practice, and the exploitation of new electrical technologies that advanced the art of scenography. As natural explorers of new aesthetic forms, jesters had a great role to play in this revolution. This research questions the use of jesters in the modern times, showing how they echo the dramatic revolution, and therefore help society to overcome the crisis of purpose. The corpus is a selection of theatrical works from Alfred Jarry, Michel de Ghelderode, Samuel Beckett, Roland Dubillard and Alain Badiou. The period of investigation stretches from 1896, the year in which Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi premiered, to 2018, marked by the debut of the final segment of Alain Badiou’s saga Ahmed. This study is primarily based on textual analysis, relying heavily on stage performances documented through interviews and press articles. The first section deals with the history of jesters, from Antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century, in order to understand their role in modernity, in contrast. It allows us, in the second part, to show how jesters reappropriated symbolic attributes in modern times, under the form of a typology. The third part returns to the fundamentals of madness, insisting on linguistic creativity and on a complex form of humour, a mix of burlesque and tragic effects. Only with this understanding of jesters can we begin to uncover how they came to be named “morosophs”, meaning “wise fools”, and how they can provide solutions to the crises of modern times

Because of Christ’s command ─“ Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation”, George Leslie Mackay went to Northern Taiwan in the late nineteenth century. In 1873, Mackay began to preach the gospel in Kap-tsu-lan. During 1882~1900, a large amount of Kavalans turned to believe in Jesus Christ. Evangelical missions in Northern Taiwan was very successful. But, after Mackay passed away, Kavalan churches began to fade away. The purpose of this study is to understand Kavalans’ life in the Christian faith and the historical context that they were in and explore the reasons for the decline in the number of churches in Kap-tsu-lan. Findings of this study are summarized as follows: According to statistics, Mackay’s missions in Kavalan can be divided into three periods:They are Dissemination (1873~1882), Increase (1883~1894), and Decline (1895~1900, end in 1923) periods. During these periods, Mackay set up at least 24 churches, and led 2,500 people to Christ. However, since 1895, the number of Kavalan Church gradually decreased. By 1900, it was reduced to 20~22 churches, and continued to reduce and finally disappeared in 1923. . Reasons for the decline of the Kavalan churches are, first, Kavalans’ massive and fast conversion to the Christ made a large number of followers in need of care. Because of Mackay didn’t want to dispatch foreign missionaries, there were not sufficient co-workers for Mackay. It made him busy running around all over Northern Taiwan, and he was too busy to train them. Since Mackay didn’t stay in Kap-tsu-lan for a long period, training and education usually were assumed by local preachers from Taiwan. However, they also lacked the capacity to take care of the Kavalan Christians. On average, per local preacher needed to educate at least one hundred believers. As a result, the believers did not develop strong foundations in faith. Second, the environment in the 19th century for the Kavalan was too fluctuating for churches to develop stably. Because the protective policies of the land that the Qing Dynasty (Manching government) set for the Kavalan have no real protective effect, Kavalans started to move toward Sanxing and Hualien areas from 1840 to 1850. In 1895, the Manching government ceded Taiwan to Japan expedited the change of the Kavalan society. After Taiwanese armed uprisings, natural disasters, and the reformation of land investigation, the economic environment became harsher for Kavalans, there were more and more people moving away from Kap-tsu-lan. The Kavalan churches set by Mackay then became ruins. After Mackay passed away, Presbyterian church leaders decided to set up churches in the Han society. As a result, the Kavalan churches gradually disappeared. The Kavalan Christians were not steeped in their faith. After moving into the Han society, their church-going activity was irregular, and many were married to non-believers which affect their belief. As a consequence, the Kavalan churches disappeared.

Abstract:
Only five years after the Royal Superior School of Commerce (the present Ca’ Foscari University) was founded in 1868, the School introduced, for the first time in Italy, Japanese language courses taught by native speakers. The classes started in 1873 and continued until 1888, and were again part of the curriculum from 1909 to 1923. In those years a little number of very active Japanese teachers (interprets, linguists, sculptors and painters) contributed to shaping the education in Japanese of Italian students, who in turn went on to direct Japanese instruction in Italy. Their guiding spirit was Guglielmo Berchet, a tireless promoter of Italo-Japanese relations.

Abstract:
The paper presents the results of the historical study of the population formation in Ekaterinburg over a 300-year period. Historical sources and the process of accumulating knowledge about the number of city residents were examined. Analysis of population data revealed that the process of collecting demographic information on Russia (and, accordingly, on Ekaterinburg) took a century and a half (from the 18th century until almost the 1870s). The role of the head of the Ekaterinburg mining plants, academician I. F. Herman, in the development of population tables is shown. Since 1873, when the first one-day census of the city’s population was conducted, and then 1887, statistical and demographic information has become representative. The main source for examining the population formation of the city were the censuses of 1897, 1920, 1923, 1926, 1931, 1937, 1939, 1959, 1979, 1989, 2002, 2010, as well as the current population records. A brief review of historical literature showed that the study of the population of Ekaterinburg is in its infancy.
