Dentalium martini Whitfield, 1882, is a calcareous worm tube, not a mollusk, and is placed in synonymy of Coleolus crenatocinctum Hall, 1879. The growth of D. martini mimics logarithmic curvature in the holotype, but in other specimens shape varies from irregularly curved to straight. A prime reason for reassignment is variation of the wall thickness around the circumference in D. martini, which in late Paleozoic and Recent scaphopods of the same size is of uniform thickness.

This chapter examines the unusually swift downturn in Russo-Bulgarian relations between 1879 and 1883. In 1879, relations between the two countries were unusually good, founded on a basis of mutual sympathy, geopolitical necessity, and strong administrative ties. By 1883, however, a series of lapses in Russian diplomatic practice damaged Russo-Bulgarian relations to the point that all of Bulgaria's political elite was united in opposition to the Russians, and by 1886 diplomatic relations were severed altogether. This chapter examines three incidents in particular – the Titles Controversy of late 1879/early 1880, the Coup of 1881, and the tenure of Generals L. N. Sobolev and A. V. Kaul'bars in 1882-1883. Ultimately, this chapter demonstrates how flawed diplomatic practice may result in undesirable foreign policy outcomes.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the first policy to restrict Chinese immigration to the United States by tracing its background in broad political transformations during the Gilded Age, including the end of Reconstruction, rapid industrialization, and swings in the business cycle. It provides a close analysis of congressional voting patterns during two Congresses that approved bills to restrict Chinese labor immigrants, the first (passed in 1879) was vetoed by the president, while the second (passed in 1882) became the law of the land. The debate over both policies revealed the polarization of views in Congress and the broader society about the Chinese. The return of the Democrats to power and the Midwestern revolt against big businesses (often identified with the Republicans) combined with racial prejudice to win support for the restriction of Chinese workers.

Abstract:
Holmes may have admired Bertillon’s work, but that did not prevent him from being resentful about it in The Hound of the Baskervilles (HOUN). When Dr. James Mortimer told Holmes that Bertillon was the highest expert in Europe, Holmes admitted that he was off ended by the ranking. So who was this man held in such high regard? Alphonse Bertillon was a French anthropologist born in 1853. His poor academic performance was followed by difficulty holding a job. In 1879, his influential father Louis, a famous physician and anthropologist, obtained a job for him as a clerk with the Parisian police (Wagner 2006, 97–98). He started work in March 1879, and became interested in the problem of identifying recidivists, that is, repeat off enders. It was French policy to exile recidivists to their colonies (Cole 2001, 33). But there was no procedure for identifying them. Fingerprinting did not exist, and even mug shots were not yet used. Upon a second arrest, recidivists would merely use a pseudonym. Bertillon wanted to develop a system of identification based on ideas mentioned in 1840 by a Belgian statistician named Quetelet (Wagner 2006, 98). Bertillon found his job with the police to be very boring, as he collected and filed much information, most of it never used again and worthless. So, on October 1, 1879 (Cole 2001, 49), he submitted a report proposing a method of identification using body measurements. The report was ignored (Wagner 2006, 98). Louis Bertillon liked his son’s suggestion. Louis had in fact attempted to classify people, not identify them, by measuring the lengths of their bones. So he was naturally attracted to Alphonse’s idea to use such measurements to identify criminals (Cole 2001, 34). In 1882, with help from his influential father, Alphonse Bertillon was given two assistants and some funding. He was given three months to identify a repeat offender. He succeeded with one week remaining.
