Abstract:
Eleanora Bliss Knopf (1883-1974) was one of several American women geologists working in the Appalachians during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Though primarily a petrologist, she made astute observations concerning inequalities in erosion in catchments and hence the survival of palaeoforms in the landscape.

Abstract:
The importance of the hoard found in the excavations in the Forum at Rome in 1883, just outside the the House of the Vestal Virgins, has long been recognized by Anglo-Saxon numismatists, for it is the largest recorded source for the coinage of Æthelstan and Edmund. Archaeologists, art-historians and epigraphers have, however, failed to appreciate the significance for Anglo-Saxon studies of the pair of silver tags found with the coins (pl. VIII), bearing between them the name of Pope Marinus, despite their having been illustrated (in uncleaned condition) by Christopher Blunt in his 1974 account of the hoard. The tags themselves are described and discussed here by Dr James Graham-Campbell and their inscriptions by Dr Elisabeth Okasha, both working from photographs kindly made available to us by Dottoressa Silvana Balbi de Caro, of the Museo Nazionale in Rome, through the agency of Dr Michael Metcalf.

Abstract:
In this article we address the historical and epistemological study of infinity as a mathematical concept, focusing on identifying difficulties, counter-intuitive ideas and paradoxes that constituted implicit, unconscious models faced by mathematicians at different times in history, representing obstacles in the rigorous formalization process of this mathematical concept. It is shown how the active and conscious questioning of these models led to a process of axiomatization of mathematical infinity, which was completed with the works of Cantor (1883) and Robinson (1974). The implemented methodology is supported by a qualitative and argumentative bibliographic research based on content analysis from a meta-ethnography. From this research, information is obtained about the unconscious mathematical structures students are confronted with and the conscious patterns of reasoning they must develop to overcome difficulties and obstacles that these models produce, and thus achieve an adequate understanding of mathematical infinity.

Whilst successively going through three distinctive periods (1883-1914) : the rixe of the large firm, 1914-1944 : "the great depression" and colonial retrenchment; 1944-1977 : the redirection of activity, going for the home market und the French franc zone overseas), French civil engineering contractors had to contend with severe constraints, persisting throughout that century : fickle market configurations, rising costs, chronic fundings shortfall. These constraints were only to be overcome by a consistent innovative drive, which en abled them to achieve remarkable breakthroughs on the export markets, and goes a long way towards explaining their continuing to this day

This paper analyzes the foreign policy adopted by the governments of Eurico Dutra (1946-1950) and of Getúlio Vargas (1951-1954), resorting to primary and secondary sources. The hypothesis it defends is that, during these two governments, Brazilian foreign policy was characterized by the "imposition of alignment". Consequently, influenced by internal and external forces, the policy of alignment to the United States imposed itself as the effectively viable option to the Brazil of theses two presidents. Along the development of that characterization, the traditional concepts to the interpretation of the foreign policy of those two governments are debated. The premises of these concepts are analyzed and interpreted according to recent studies developed in the field of World History, Brazilian History, International Relations History, Brazilian Foreign Policy History, World Economy, and Brazilian Economy.

This work has as its main objective to question the interpretations of the Vargas period in light of the construction and meaning of Getúlio in public fancy, elaborated between years 1937 to 1946. Although the timeline is somewhat long, its length is due to the fact that this work is seeking to question both the construction of the ideology of the New State by means of the speeches of Getúlio Vargas, as well as the construction of his image through the speeches of Alexandre Marcondes Filho broadcast by the radio, as well as the forms in which the population responded to these elaborations by means of correspondence coming from various Brazilian regions intended for Vargas. The purpose is to answer questionings like: How was it possible the construction of such a popular representation as of a public figure? How is the relationship between public and private articulated in the imaginary constructions?

Abstract:

Political Culture Magazine was one of the diffusion channels of government ideology formed during the “Estado Novo “(the political regime instituted by Getúlio Vargas in Brazil from 1937 to 1945). The magazine was published from March, 1941 through October, 1945. It dealt with Brazilian studies and aimed at explaining the social economical changes in course in Brazil at that time. Besides of reporting the governmental accomplishments in details Political Culture Magazine also played the role of a bibliographical information center announcing and reviewing publications about Getúlio Vargas and the “Estado Novo”. During its existence it achieved 50 publications with large diffusion as it was monthly sold at newsstands in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. There was a participation of many outstanding intellectuals embracing the most diverse trends of thought such as Almir de Andrade, Azevedo Amaral, Cassiano Ricardo, Francisco Campos, Lourival Fontes, Graciliano Ramos, Gilberto Freyre, Nelson Werneck Sodré, among other articles’ writers. The most varied subjects were discussed there and the high circulation figures called our attention thus constituting the basis of our work. Starting from the Political Culture articles our proposal aims at studying the economical debate among the magazine members - the so called authoritarian intellectuals - who conceived projects for Brazil, i.e. the intellectuals who to a certain extent influenced the estadonovista thought and therefore its economical thought. We believe it is possible to comparatively analyze the content of their speeches in order to better understand how they viewed the nation and what was their development project for the country specially concerning the guidelines of the Brazilian economy and its insertion in the world. Among those authors a special attention will be given to Almir de Andrade, Azevedo Amaral, Cassiano Ricardo, Francisco Campos e Lourival Fontes

West, Michael. "Mathematical Modelling of DNAPL Source Zone Remediation." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/1883.

Full text
Abstract:
Mathematical modelling was utilized to evaluate trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone remediation in the subsurface environment. Semi-analytical solutions were derived, tested, and employed to evaluate the benefits of source zone concentration reduction and solute degradation mechanisms on the evolution of plumes in porous media and fractured rock domains. Simulations of treatment in complex DNAPL source zones using different remedial technologies were completed with a numerical model that was developed, tested, calibrated, and applied to nine idealized heterogeneous porous media sites. Analytical modelling revealed that, in domains dominated by matrix diffusion, aggressive and moderate source zone concentration reduction may have similar effects on the leading edge of the plume. The tailing (near source) edge of the plume may be more responsive to aggressive concentration reduction, particularly when diffusion processes are negligible. Both the near-field (near-source) and far-field plume responses were strongly influenced by the matrix decay half-life for both transient and steady-state conditions. The degradative capacity of the matrix largely dictated plume extent and life-span for the fractured bedrock site considered here. Numerical simulations of in situ source zone treatment with chemical oxidation (ISCO), enhanced bioremediation (ISEB), and surfactants (SEAR) were compared and contrasted. Treatment efficacy was site specific, with benefits observed at some sites, and detrimental impacts observed at others. Each technology demonstrated some degree of performance enhancement relative to dissolution only (no treatment). The maximum DNAPL mass depletion enhancement factors for ISCO, ISEB and SEAR, were 1.44, 2.91, and 2.70 after 10 years, respectively. Similarly, the maximum boundary mass flux enhancement factors for ISCO, ISEB and SEAR were 9.78, 3.32, and 3.97, respectively. While notable enhancements were observed for many sites during active treatment, the long-term performance of pre-maturely terminated ISCO and ISEB, and to a lesser degree SEAR, was similar to dissolution. Overall, the partial depletion of DNAPL mass from source zones produced on-going persistent boundary mass flux signatures. Only the complete removal of DNAPL mass, which was attained for one site with SEAR, successfully eliminated downgradient boundary mass flux.

Gutkin, David. "American Opera, Jazz, and Historical Consciousness, 1924-1994." Thesis, 2015. https://doi.org/10.7916/D81835SM.

Full text
Abstract:
From the 1970s through the early 1990s numerous critics commented on an apparent “rebirth” of American opera. Subsequent scholarship has increasingly sanctioned a consensus view holding up Philip Glass and John Adams as the central figures in this opera resurgence. Although I do not dispute the importance of (post-)minimalism in these decades, my gambit in this dissertation is to reframe the idea of a late twentieth-century operatic renaissance by tracing a long relationship between jazz and the concept of American opera. The jazz genealogy of American opera that I develop in this study is intended not only to draw attention to a body of work that has been largely ignored but also to unfold antinomies of postmodern historical consciousness that were manifest in the operatic resurgence more generally. Although my inquiry extends as far back as the 1920s, this dissertation by no means presents a continuous history of opera from 1924 to 1994, as the subtitle might imply. The weight is squarely placed on the 1970s through the early 1990s. Chapter 1 explores racial dimensions of the concept of “modernity” through a study of Harlem Renaissance composer H. Lawrence Freeman’s never-performed “jazz opera” American Romance (1924-1929). Chapter 2 chronicles the Harlem Opera Society’s abandonment of its former European repertory and subsequent reinvention as the Afro-American Singing Theater/Jazz Opera Ensemble during the late 1960s and 1970s. Chapter 3 tracks the transformation of jazz in the 1980s into an increasingly historicist—or possibly posthistoricist—music through a series of works that I call “jazz-historical operas.” Chapter 4 works through a tension between “actuality” and allegory in Robert Ashley’s television opera trilogy (1978-1994) about American history. The name of Duke Ellington winds through the four chapters as a kind of red thread. “Ellington” functions as a multivalent trope, alternatively signifying hypermodern America, the black cultural tradition, composition, and improvisational “actuality.” In a brief epilogue I identify another figure whose name has somewhat more furtively shadowed my study: Richard Wagner. I suggest that the idea of an “Ellington-Wagner matrix” in American opera both symbolizes a tradition of cultural hybridity and identifies a problematic concerning history and sonic materiality (roughly, the distinction between “event” and “representation”) expounded in the preceding chapters. In some ways, my analysis of the deeply ambiguous status of historicity and modernity in twentieth century American culture will prove consonant with many previous discussions of the topic. But I hope that in certain fundamental respects my study may also be understood as a novel, even interventionist foray into historical theory. Race has scarcely been an overlooked topic in critical inquiry and cultural theory of the last three decades, but it is hard to ignore the Eurocentric—or Euro-American—thrust of much of the canonical discourse on postmodernity and historicity, some of which was surveyed above. My attempts to interpret transformations in historical consciousness through shifting relationships between two culturally and racially supercharged signifiers—“jazz” and “opera”—might be taken as a challenge to this tendency.
