Abstract:
The Magdalenian sites of Andernach and Gönnersdorf are located in the central Rhineland at the northwestern end of the Neuwied Basin (fig. 1). The first investigation of the Andernach-Martinsberg site was carried out in 1883 by H. Schaaffhausen (1888); between 1979 and 1983 a new campaign of excavations took place at the same site (Veil 1982a). The site of Gönnersdorf was investigated between 1968 and 1976 (Bosinski 1979). The two sites are located directly facing each other above the Rhine, which at the time of the occupation was much wider than at the present day; Andernach is sited on a Middle Pleistocene lava flow, while Gönnersdorf is on the Middle Terrace of the Rhine. Both sites are assigned by pollen analysis to the end of the Bølling interstadial; the great similarities in their archaeological material, down to individual details, suggest that the two sites were contemporary.

Abstract:
The REVIZEE (Survey of the live resources from the Economic Exclusive Zone) Program collected 158 benthic samples, in Brazilian continental shelf and slope, in latitudes ranging from 13 o 00´S to 22 o 30´S, and depths ranging from 50 to 500m. In these samples, ten caridean species, distributed in six families were identified: Latreutes fucorum (Fabricius, 1798), Trachycaris restricta (A. Milne Edwards, 1878) (Hippolytidae); Anchistioides antiguensis (Schmitt, 1924) (Anchistioitidae); Brachycarpus biunguiculatus (Lucas, 1849), Leander tenuicornis (Say, 1818) (Palaemonidae, subfamily Palaemoninae); Periclimenaeus bermudensis (Armstrong, 1940), Pontonia manningi Fransen, 2000 (Palaemonidae, subfamily Pontoniinae); Leptochela serratorbita Bate, 1888 (Pasiphaeidae); Processa brasiliensis Christoffersen, 1979 (Processidae) and Pseudocheles chacei Kensley, 1983 (Bresiliidae). Nine of these species are herein redescribed and compared with data from the literature. Of these, Pseudocheles chacei is a new record for the Brazilian coast. Anchistioides antiguensis, P. manningi, L. serratorbita and P. brasiliensis had their latitudinal distribution expanded to the study area.

Abstract:
T. C. Chao (Zhao Zichen, 1888–1979) was a leading Chinese theologian of the twentieth century. His Yesu Zhuan is a well-known book in China and accepted by many Chinese people as a way to know who Jesus is. Given this, this article will examine Chao's Christology in Yesu Zhuan. It will first introduce the historical context of Yesu Zhuan, including national crisis, cultural crisis and anti-Christian movements. Then, Chao's purpose and the methodology of writing Yesu Zhuan will be elaborated, which will be followed by a theological appraisal of Chao's methodology and Christology in Yesu Zhuan. By so doing, the article will demonstrate that under the influence of Western liberal theology and with the effort to indigenise Christianity in China, Chao actually portrays a ‘Jesus’ who is the most prominent Sage, the Sage of sages. That means he delineates a possible way in which Christian faith may be understood in Chinese culture. However, the ‘Jesus’ in Yesu Zhuan is a mere human being without divine nature. In the end, the Christology in Yesu Zhuan diametrically contradicts Chalcedonian Christology.

Abstract:
Colombia is a mega-biodiverse country and rich in ecosystems as different as the Amazon and the Andes. Much is known of the vertebrate fauna, however there is still an information-gap for many arthropod groups including the arachnids. Here, we compile all the information available for pseudoscorpions (Arachnida: Pseudoscorpiones) recorded from Colombia and include several new records and distribution extensions. For each described species, we present information on taxonomic history, type localities, global and local distributions, repository of Colombian specimens, and collection numbers when available. We document 12 families, 45 genera and 65 species of pseudoscorpions for Colombia and most species belong to the families Chernetidae (27 species) and Olpiidae (8 species). We record Beierolpium venezuelense Heurtault, 1982, Geogarypus amazonicus Mahnert, 1979, Sathrochthonius venezuelanus Muchmore, 1989, and Semeiochernes armiger (Balzan, 1892) for the first time for Colombia. We further extend the known ranges of Parachernes melonopygus Beier, 1959 and Paratemnoides nidificator (Balzan, 1888). The data suggest that the Caribbean region of Colombia has the highest number of records. Total numbers are not complete and many other new pseudoscorpion species are expected.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Considering the whole corpus of the two writers, the essay means to extract the main data of aesthetics and morals from their experience of murder and homosexuality. Two of the most grievously sensitive scenes of their relationship to the world and their readers. The first part follow s its formulation and evolution about murder, from the "heretical passions" pf the 1920s' tales to the 1966 news in brief (jouhandeau); from the foul crimes of the 1940s' stories to the political murder in the last works (genet). The second part does the same with inversion, felt guilty for long, and to whom the two writers may have given the role of a n aesthetic and moral basis (or at least aesthetic: genet). The first three chapters study the evolution of the type of m. Godeau up to the libertin aesthetics in the carnets de don juan, then the defence of idolatry in the journaliers and the erotic works of the same period, finally the savoir-faire developped in the same decades on the ground of a moral debate. Four chapters devoted to genet follows the representation of male sexuality up to the moral compromise of journal du voleur, its denial in the 1954-1955s' texts to the benefit of an aesthetic logic, lastly the conclusion of the posthumous book, between prostitution and pieta. A last part studies the spiritual extensions of the aethetic and moral processes, which are actually elaborated in a religious climate from which jouhandeau and genet seek to detache ways and ideals of perfection

Abstract:
Pure Amour is the autobiographie of a passionate love affair between two men. It’s thus the title of our thesis : « Passion according to Jouhandeau : aspects of writing about oneself ». The first part refers to the narrative about passion : how a passionate love affair begins and then how the body exults. Homosexuality is viewed through Plato, not only with great tolerance, but also with exceptional dimension. But, the evolution of passionate love leads to disillusions of love and the search for the Sacred. That’s how Jouhandeau falls into a passionate desire which fortunately leads him in a world of sublimation and into Pure Amour, influenced by Fenelon. Because Jouhandeau is a mystic in search of wisdom, and especially, of the mysticism of Eros. This narrative about passion leads towards the second part of our study : the passion of writing analysing the epistolary process, the dissertation about love and the writing from the heart. In Pure Amour, Jouhandeau tries to make us believe in a passionate exceptional love for Robert and ending by its death. Let’s emphasize that the two parts of the thesis overlap as the two faces of the same coin, and it’s therefore impossible to separate them as they keep their own identity. The passionate love fusions with the passion of writing

Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA040047.

Full text
Abstract:
Monnet's great design for Europe consisted of a unified Europe, a euro-American partnership and a world concert of big three. It was not entirely incompatible with de Gaulle’s European policy. However their divergences are huge. Monnet advocated a sovereignty merging, which was intolerable to de Gaulle. The latter preferred a traditional international cooperation. Besides, toward the USA, two men adopted different attitudes. Monnet accepted the American leadership on the continent before Europe is unified. That was in contradiction with de Gaulle’s policy. As a result, Monnet preconized a European federation while de Gaulle choosed the way to the confederation. But the clash didn't happen until de Gaulle imposed his first veto to the Great Britain’s participation to the common market in 1963. From that moment, Monnet tried his best to fight against de Gaulle’s European policy. His action committee gathers most of the political parties in the six member states of EEC. His personal relations with American leaders permitted him to de facto participate to the decision-making of the European policy of the USA. He played successfully the role of catalyzer. He had an influence upon the men with power but he took, at the same time, a distance from the power. Thought frustrated in the sixties, Monnet’s great design was partially realized in the following decades. In 1991, Germany was unified in the structure of NATO and EC instead of a pan-European system foreseen by de Gaulle. Later and later Monnet became the symbols of European integration movement. But will the integration lead to the creation of a European federation? Nobody knows it. However; in the foreseeable future, the European union will still consist of an integration and a cooperation. It is really regretful that Monnet and de Gaulle could not achieve a certain entente for Europe in the sixties

Although distintic countries and literary experiences, Fernando Pessoa (1888 - 1935) and Agostinho Neto (1922 - 1979) share the theme of national identity in their respective works, Mensagem (1934) and Sagrada Esperança (1974 ). Pessoa retraces the path taken by Camões in Os Lusíadas, shedding light on myths and extolling the Portuguese nation through historical events as a way to rescue the Portuguese collective identities, while Agostinho creates a poetry marked by engagement amid a period of wars for the conquest of Angola's independence, showing how Literature holds a fundamental role for the social reconstruction of colonized peoples. Using the comparative method, the propose is a reflection on the making of poetry as a tool for dialogue and social discussion, and to promote new approaches to the poems studied, investigating similar and dissonant aspects in the poetic works and thus reflect on the relationships between colonizer and colonized

Abstract:
This dissertation explores the concept of revelation in the writings of Ahmad Khan, Azad, and Mawdudi Using as its framework the development of modern Western thought on revelation, it raises questions related to religious epistemology and finds that the Muslims studied offer three interpretations of revelation: (1) part mystico-subjective and part natural intuitive, (2) part traditional and part mystico-subjective, and (3) traditional. The thesis concludes that out of a preoccupation with apologetics, all three authors failed to develop a coherent theory of revelation: Mawdudi did not understand modern problems surrounding revelation and hence did not feel the need for a solution to them; Azad, because of an ambivalent position regarding modernity, contradicted his own views; only Ahmad Khan was able to appreciate the modern threat to revelation and attempted a new interpretation. However, his interpretation was expressed in medieval philosophic molds and found little acceptance among Muslims at large.

Abstract:
The recognition of productivity in France is the fruit of a long process which, depending on the economic situation and the particular French context, involved several groups of people with different concerns. Productivity first guided the work of engineers and company directors between the two World Wars. Productivity then entered into theories of statisticians and economists who, like André L. A. Vincent at the “Institut de Conjoncture”, thought deeply about technical progress, national accounting and economic information during World War II. Finally, in 1945, when efforts are made to rebuild and modernize the French economy to catch up with America's high living standards, productivity is at the core of the strategies implemented by technocrats like Jean Fourastié, Fourth Republic politicians like Robert Buron, company directors and trade-unions officials who peopled ministerial cabinets and semi-official commissions like the “Commissariat du Plan”. With the help of the United States Technical Assistance Program (USTAP), of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and thanks to the “psychological shock” of the productivity missions, this small but influent “bataillon sacré de la productivité” sought to convince the French of the need to import new working methods and to pacify industrial relations

Abstract:
AbstractThe Chapter commences with a study of the text and the application of the 1888 Constantinople Convention by which the Ottoman Empire agreed to apply a special regime to the Suez Canal. The Chapter continues with an analysis of the Egyptian Government's nationalization of the Canal and its statements as to the continued application of the Constantinople Convention. The next issue examined is Egypt's denial of the use of the Canal to Israeli ships and to cargoes bound for Israel. The Chapter gives the Egyptian legal justifications for this embargo based on the rights of belligerency, the language of the 1888 Convention and the 1949 Egypt-Israel Armistice Agreement. The Chapter describes the counter-legal arguments based on the cessation of belligerency, principles of the Law of the Sea, and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. The Chapter concludes with a description of how the issue with Israel was solved in the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

Abstract:
Jean Rhys (1890-1979) and Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) were born within two years of each other in what were then British colonies under the New Imperialism. Rhys’s relative longevity and the fact that her first publication, the story ‘Vienne’ appeared in 1924 have obscured their contemporaneousness. Both wrote about failed love and affairs in England, Rhys in diaries she wrote in the 1910s, which would be reworked as ‘Triple Sec’, an unpublished 1924 novel, and revised as Voyage in the Dark (1934), and Mansfield in the manuscript stories ‘Juliet’ (begun in 1906) and ‘A Little Episode’ (1909), recently unearthed in the King’s College Library. The epigragh to ‘A Little Episode’ is from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray; Rhys alludes to the same two sentences in the opening sentence of Voyage in the Dark. This chapter draws out the resonances of their allusions to Wilde, and locates the texts as engagements with literary decadence.

Abstract:
In Chapters 7 to 11, we have examined a series of recurring themes in the geography of war and disease since 1850 through regional lenses. In this chapter, we conclude our regional–thematic survey by illustrating further prominent themes which, either because of their subject-matter or because of their geographical location, were beyond the immediate scope of the foregoing chapters. In selecting regional case studies for this chapter, we concentrate on wars which have not been examined in depth to this point (the South African War and the Cuban Insurrection) or which, on account of their magnitude and extent, merit examination beyond that afforded in previous sections (World War I and World War II). Four principal issues are addressed: (1) Africa: population reconcentration and disease (Section 12.2), illustrated with reference to civilian concentration camps in the South African War, 1899–1902; (2) Americas: peace, war, and epidemiological integration (Section 12.3), illustrated with reference to the civil settlement system of Cuba, 1888–1902; (3) Asia: prisoners of war, forced labour, and disease (Section 12.4), illustrated with reference to Allied prisoners on the line of the Burma–Thailand Railway, 1942–4; (4) Europe: civilian epidemics and the world wars (Section 12.5), illustrated with reference to the spread of a series of diseases in the civil population of Europe during, and after, the hostilities of 1914–18 and 1939–45. As before, the study sites in (1) to (4) span a broad range of epidemiological environments, from the cool temperate latitudes of northern Europe, through the tropical island and jungle environments of the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, to the warm temperate and subtropical savannah lands of the South African Veld. Diseases have been sampled to reflect this epidemiological range. The South African War (1899–1902) has been described as the last of the ‘typhoid campaigns’ (Curtin, 1998)—a closing chapter on the predominance of disease over battle as a cause of death among soldiers (Pakenham, 1979: 382). From the military perspective, typhoid was indeed the major health issue of the war, accounting for a reported 8,020 deaths in the British Army (Simpson, 1911: 57).
