Full textConsidering the whole corpus of the two writers, the essay means to extract the main data of aesthetics and morals from their experience of murder and homosexuality. Two of the most grievously sensitive scenes of their relationship to the world and their readers. The first part follow s its formulation and evolution about murder, from the "heretical passions" pf the 1920s' tales to the 1966 news in brief (jouhandeau); from the foul crimes of the 1940s' stories to the political murder in the last works (genet). The second part does the same with inversion, felt guilty for long, and to whom the two writers may have given the role of a n aesthetic and moral basis (or at least aesthetic: genet). The first three chapters study the evolution of the type of m. Godeau up to the libertin aesthetics in the carnets de don juan, then the defence of idolatry in the journaliers and the erotic works of the same period, finally the savoir-faire developped in the same decades on the ground of a moral debate. Four chapters devoted to genet follows the representation of male sexuality up to the moral compromise of journal du voleur, its denial in the 1954-1955s' texts to the benefit of an aesthetic logic, lastly the conclusion of the posthumous book, between prostitution and pieta. A last part studies the spiritual extensions of the aethetic and moral processes, which are actually elaborated in a religious climate from which jouhandeau and genet seek to detache ways and ideals of perfection

Full textPure Amour is the autobiographie of a passionate love affair between two men. It’s thus the title of our thesis : « Passion according to Jouhandeau : aspects of writing about oneself ». The first part refers to the narrative about passion : how a passionate love affair begins and then how the body exults. Homosexuality is viewed through Plato, not only with great tolerance, but also with exceptional dimension. But, the evolution of passionate love leads to disillusions of love and the search for the Sacred. That’s how Jouhandeau falls into a passionate desire which fortunately leads him in a world of sublimation and into Pure Amour, influenced by Fenelon. Because Jouhandeau is a mystic in search of wisdom, and especially, of the mysticism of Eros. This narrative about passion leads towards the second part of our study : the passion of writing analysing the epistolary process, the dissertation about love and the writing from the heart. In Pure Amour, Jouhandeau tries to make us believe in a passionate exceptional love for Robert and ending by its death. Let’s emphasize that the two parts of the thesis overlap as the two faces of the same coin, and it’s therefore impossible to separate them as they keep their own identity. The passionate love fusions with the passion of writing
Su, Hungdah. "Jean Monnet face à la politique européenne du général de Gaulle de 1958 à 1969." Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA040047.
Full textMonnet's great design for Europe consisted of a unified Europe, a euro-American partnership and a world concert of big three. It was not entirely incompatible with de Gaulle’s European policy. However their divergences are huge. Monnet advocated a sovereignty merging, which was intolerable to de Gaulle. The latter preferred a traditional international cooperation. Besides, toward the USA, two men adopted different attitudes. Monnet accepted the American leadership on the continent before Europe is unified. That was in contradiction with de Gaulle’s policy. As a result, Monnet preconized a European federation while de Gaulle choosed the way to the confederation. But the clash didn't happen until de Gaulle imposed his first veto to the Great Britain’s participation to the common market in 1963. From that moment, Monnet tried his best to fight against de Gaulle’s European policy. His action committee gathers most of the political parties in the six member states of EEC. His personal relations with American leaders permitted him to de facto participate to the decision-making of the European policy of the USA. He played successfully the role of catalyzer. He had an influence upon the men with power but he took, at the same time, a distance from the power. Thought frustrated in the sixties, Monnet’s great design was partially realized in the following decades. In 1991, Germany was unified in the structure of NATO and EC instead of a pan-European system foreseen by de Gaulle. Later and later Monnet became the symbols of European integration movement. But will the integration lead to the creation of a European federation? Nobody knows it. However; in the foreseeable future, the European union will still consist of an integration and a cooperation. It is really regretful that Monnet and de Gaulle could not achieve a certain entente for Europe in the sixties

Although distintic countries and literary experiences, Fernando Pessoa (1888 - 1935) and Agostinho Neto (1922 - 1979) share the theme of national identity in their respective works, Mensagem (1934) and Sagrada Esperança (1974 ). Pessoa retraces the path taken by Camões in Os Lusíadas, shedding light on myths and extolling the Portuguese nation through historical events as a way to rescue the Portuguese collective identities, while Agostinho creates a poetry marked by engagement amid a period of wars for the conquest of Angola's independence, showing how Literature holds a fundamental role for the social reconstruction of colonized peoples. Using the comparative method, the propose is a reflection on the making of poetry as a tool for dialogue and social discussion, and to promote new approaches to the poems studied, investigating similar and dissonant aspects in the poetic works and thus reflect on the relationships between colonizer and colonized

Full textThe recognition of productivity in France is the fruit of a long process which, depending on the economic situation and the particular French context, involved several groups of people with different concerns. Productivity first guided the work of engineers and company directors between the two World Wars. Productivity then entered into theories of statisticians and economists who, like André L. A. Vincent at the “Institut de Conjoncture”, thought deeply about technical progress, national accounting and economic information during World War II. Finally, in 1945, when efforts are made to rebuild and modernize the French economy to catch up with America's high living standards, productivity is at the core of the strategies implemented by technocrats like Jean Fourastié, Fourth Republic politicians like Robert Buron, company directors and trade-unions officials who peopled ministerial cabinets and semi-official commissions like the “Commissariat du Plan”. With the help of the United States Technical Assistance Program (USTAP), of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and thanks to the “psychological shock” of the productivity missions, this small but influent “bataillon sacré de la productivité” sought to convince the French of the need to import new working methods and to pacify industrial relations

Full textThis study explores the field of intersection between text and sexuality, as it proposes to examine the inscription of a feminine subjectivity within the fictional writings of dorothy richardson (pilgrimage), katherine mansfield (the collected short stories), and jean rhys (the left bank, quartet, after leaving mr mackenzie, and good morning, midnight). This analysis of gender takes root in the lacanian theories of the symbolic order of language in order to identify particular enunciative patterns, based on the practice of literature as a reading activity. The figure of the female reader in the text appears in these texts as the narrative locus for the exposition of the discursive nature of feminity and of gender identity, bound up with the sexual implications of signifying processes. By writing feminity into their texts, dorothy richardson, katherine mansfield and jean rhys direct the writing activity toward a semantic loss, and, through diferrent narrative strategies, offer a vision of reading as a feminine form of discourse, as the discourse of the female gender

Full textFrom 1910 to 1930, and in the aftermath of the First World War, history and politics were focused on the city. The city crystallised what was at once a temporal crisis and a period rich in potential. It was, at the same time, a laboratory for a new Modernist aesthetics in literature and the stage on which women at last arrived. The writings of Virginia Woolf, Jean Rhys, Katherine Mansfield and Rose Macaulay take on the historical and socio-political determinations that, for women, structured urban space like a grid. The subjectivities of their female characters constitute positions which allow a critical reading both to create and unravel spatial configurations determined by the modalities of power. They start the work of resistance that promises to unhinge the spatial and political grids of power. The difficulty the female voice has in finding a place to be heard generates a force that shatters the bonds of community and temporal structures. Space relinquishes its role in the construction of plot so that conventional forms of time and narrative dissolve in the face of a new poetics. From the point of view of this poetics of paradox, the city is recreated subjectively. New images carve out a new city, without precedent, made from fleeting, ephemeral experiences. A new poetics taken in the etymological sense of making, poiein, is created on the thresholds of space, time and language. The power of figurative language to break through convention that is at work in these writings of the city clears the path for the Modernist moment to erupt and create new potentialities in time, through the power of the imaginary that is always part of language’s possibilities

Full textIn an attempt to explain the Zeeman effect within the quantum framework, in mid 1916 Arnold Sommerfeld presented a new concept: Space Quantization, which introduced a new quantum number related to the discrete orientation of orbits inside the atom when immersed in an external magnetic field. The increasing explanatory success of Space Quantization made it necessary for Niels Bohr to also account for it in his quantum theoretical foundations of 1918, and even extend its uses. Thus Space Quantization became inherent to the genetic code of the Bohr-Sommerfeld theory. Four years later, an experimental endeavor by Otto Stern and Walther Gerlach confirmed for the first time a separation of an atomic beam in a magnetic field, in accordance to the predictions of Space Quantization. This result is usually taken as another success of the quantum theory. However, a closer look will reveal a much more intricate account of events, motivations and reactions. A further motivation for this research can be found in the vast contemporary bibliography that uses the Stern-Gerlach experiment as a cornerstone upon which to build a didactic approach to Quantum Mechanics (specially to illustrate the concept of spin) but usually at the price of introducing historical confusions or inconsistencies. With the aim to challenge incomplete and misleading accounts found elsewhere, we will relocate the Stern-Gerlach within the theoretical framework that both motivated the experiment and gathered its results.

Full textThe poem collection Le Bestiaire or Cortège d’Orphée (1911) by Apollinaire still attracts vocal composers of our time. Drawing on ancestral traditions, the setting to music of short poems about animals guided by Orpheus constitutes an inestimable “zoo” for musicians. Did Apollinaire imagine an exploration of this type? Are these musical creations, from Le Bestiaire onward, posthumously, homages to Apollinaire? From the most famous of animal cycles by Poulenc and Durey (1919), to that of Régis Campo (2008), as well as the collections of Claude Ballif and Robert Caby (1945) , each version gives rise to a specific reingagement with the poems. In this diachronic study from 1919 to 2008, the compositions in question are analyzed in their context and examined through the plurality of musical languages that they employ. In addition to Poulenc and Durey, here, in chronological order, are the other composers discussed: Yves Nat (Dans vos viviers, dans vos étangs, 1943); Claude Ballif (Le Cortège d’Orphée, op. 1b, 1945-1948); Robert Caby (Cycle of seven songs, 1945-1948); Robert Cornman (Le Bestiaire Alpha, 1961-1963, Le Bestiaire Bêta, 1972); Jean Absil (Bestiaire, op. 58, 1964); Lionel Daunais (Le Bestiaire, 1978); more recent, May Breguet (Bestiaire, 1982); Alain Corbellari (Bestiaire bis, 1991); Rachel Laurin (Bestiaire, op. 22, 1992); and, finally, John Carbon (Bestiaire, 2002) and Régis Campo (Le Bestiaire, 2008)

"The protestant quest for contextualized hymnology in twentieth century China: a case study of the collaboration between T.C. Chao and Bliss Wiant in the contextualization of Chinese hymns." 2014. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6116397.
This dissertation is concerned with the contextualization of Chinese hymns in the 1920s and 1930s in the collaboration between T. C. Chao (1888-1979), a renowned Chinese theologian, and Bliss Wiant (1895-1975), an American missionary and musicologist. The contextualization of Chinese Christian hymns has become an important area of study, but relatively little attention has been paid to the concrete interpretation of translations and hymns produced in a particular time by Chinese Christians and missionary collaborators. In this case study, the focus is on two hymnals produced by Chao and Wiant, Christian Fellowship Hymns and Hymns for the People, published in the early 1930s, with brief comparisons with other hymnals from the early decades of the twentieth century.
Chapter one surveys the contextualization of Chinese hymns made by Western protestant missionaries in the nineteenth century, followed by an exploration on the contextualization of Chinese hymnology by Chinese Christians themselves, especially in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The subject of Chapter two is the origin and writing of Christian Fellowship Hymns, focusing on T. C. Chao’s contextualized translations and his implicit and explicit interaction and dialogue with traditional cultural values and the contemporary social scene. In Chapter three we consider the second hymnal, Hymns for the People, which contains hymns written by Chao and set to Chinese music by Wiant. Here we consider Chao’s principles for hymn writing, and see how his hymns reflect his early theological thinking. In Chapter four, attention shifts to Bliss Wiant and the music in Hymns for the People. The Chinese tunes Wiant selected for this hymnal are analyzed to see how they were part of the contextualization process. Here, we employ post-colonial criticism to develop the beginnings of a new interpretative framework that can be applied to the process of the contextualization of Chinese hymnology.
Our final Chapter five compares the two Chao/Wiant hymnals with Hymns of Universal Praise, a joint effort by six denominations, which may be seen as the highpoint of the contextualization of Chinese hymnology in the fourth decade of the 20th century. These two hymnals are further compared with the hymnals of two independent/indigenous traditions: the Little Flock and the Jesus Family. Finally, we use the theory of "Glocalization" to further develop the study of Chinese hymnody in the 1920s and 1930s, emphasizing the mutually interactive process between the global and the local in contextualized Chinese Christian hymns.
Contextualized music is, theologically, an expression of the Incarnation, the Word become flesh, the flesh become song. This is evident in our study of the hymnals of T. C. Chao and Bliss Wiant. Their creative collaboration on contextualized Chinese hymns, the words and the music, has made a lasting and in some ways unique contribution to Chinese hymnody. It is important both for the study of the history of Christianity and the future of the Chinese Church. [end]

This essay aims at making an incursion by European history through historical and historiographical facts, together with bibliographical sources, to know Jean Monnet's dream on the praise to Europe. Therefore, it is important to analyze scientifically the political, economic, social and cultural representations of Europe's past that led Jean Monnet, together with other men of his time, think about Europe project. The various research sources show different issues as the reason to want a single Europe, common in its moral, philosophical, political, economic and social ideals but, above all, the dream of the United States of Europe architecture. Jean Monnet's memoirs, the history of Europe, the belligerent facts of the two World Wars, the construction of a dream or utopia, aims at being a compliment to Europe, to Jean Monnet and to all those who suffered in the paths of the (de)construction of the European Union.
