Abstract:
Abstract The case of Lidio Cipriani (1892–1962) is symptomatic of a time when sciences like anthropology and ethnology supported the fascist ideology and gave it scientific approval in a crucial political moment for Benito Mussolini’s regime (1930–1940), which enacted racist laws and institutionalized the establishment of racial segregation in the colonies as well as within the boundaries of the motherland. Over the past thirty years historiography has focused some attention on the issue, but in this contribution I would like to highlight a point that has only been mentioned in passing in studies dedicated to the Florentine anthropologist, namely the questions surrounding the use of his massive photographic corpus. Since the use of imagery to nourish a collective imagination had become crucial for the fascist regime, an analysis of these images and their circulation may allow us to better explore the interrelationship between a totalitarian political power, the social body impregnated with propaganda, and the physical anthropology practiced by Cipriani, who produced a colossal visual corpus that suited the fascist theoretical apparatus.

New Zealand mycologist G.H. Cunningham (1892–1962) frequently used the indigenous language of New Zealand, te reo Māori, when creating epithets for new species and replacement names. All of these epithets are listed, and nomenclatural treatments (including etymologies) of the taxa are presented. In addition, tables cite all te reo Māori and te reo-derived generic names and epithets published by mycological authors. Guidelines are discussed for the appropriate orthography for names and epithets derived from te reo Māori and other non-latinate vernacular languages.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines Hu Shi’s view of “The Woman Problem” (funü wenti) through his tripartite approach for achieving a Chinese Renaissance as enunciated in his 1919 article “The Significance of the New Tide” (Xinsichao de yiyi). Our reading of the 1919 article reveals that Hu conceived of the twentieth-century Chinese Renaissance as a meticulously planned reform project based on a tripartite approach that involved: (1) researching concrete problems (yanjiu wenti), (2) importing foreign theories (shuru xueli), and (3) reorganizing national heritage (zhengli guogu). The article aims to demonstrate how Hu applied each of these interconnected methods to “The Woman Problem.” Previous scholarship on Hu’s views on women has failed to notice that it was methodologically integrated into his overarching Chinese Renaissance project and simultaneously underpinned by his academic program to reorganize national heritage. This essay also probes the quality of Hu Shi’s ‘feminism’ by expounding how his analysis of “The Woman Problem” was integrated into his overarching program to achieve a Chinese Renaissance.

Abstract:
The Spanish journalist Manuel Chaves Nogales (Seville, 1897 - London, 1944) published the biography of bullfight- er Juan Belmonte (Seville, 1892 - Utrera, 1962) in 1935 in the graphic magazine Es- tampa. This biography, considered one of the best-written ones in Castilian, was re- leased in weekly chapters. Belmonte was already at that time one of the most famous bullfighters in Spain, but across his person- al story, Chaves Nogales turned Belmonte into a legend. Through the content and formal text analysis, this research identifies the connexions between the external form of a biography, published episodically, and the scenes chosen by the journalist that helped to enlarge the legend of a character. Chaves Nogales wrote the work in the first- person, so the text reads like an autobiog-raphy. This paper studies the use of first person narrative and shows the new pattern introduced in Journalism by Chaves Nogales. He contributes to the creation of the Belmonte myth through the storytell-ing.

This articLe is a transLation from French of seLected Letters of the poet and pLaywright PauL CLaudeL to the composer Darius MiLhaud. These Letters were pubLished in Paris in 1962 for the 70 anniversary of MiLhaud (1892-1974), a few years after CLaudeL's death (1868-1955). ALso, these Letters are a unique document testifying to the Long cooperation of two outstanding representatives of the art and cuLture of France in the first haLf of the 20 century. One can find out from their Letters how the work on their first joint project- the ancient triLogy “L'Orestie”-progressed. “L'Orestie” wouLd Later be considered as one of the most significant works of MiLhaud and CLaudeL. The impetus for the beginning of cooperation was the cycLe of romances “KnowLedge of the East”-one of the first pubLished works of the composer, written on the poems of CLaudeL even before meeting him. The correspondence began in 1912 and Lasted 44 years untiL the poet's death. During this time, MiLhaud composed about 30 works on CLaudeL's texts. Abstract:
Belemnites of the Neobelemnella kazimiroviensis group were classified applying the Artificial Neural Networks method, the self-organizing Kohonen algorithm. Four species are distinguished, Neobelemnella kazimiroviensis (Skołozdrówna, 1932), Neobelemnella pensaensis (Naidin, 1952), Neobelemnella skolozdrownae (Kongiel, 1962), and Neobelemnella aff. kazimiroviensis (Skołozdrówna, 1932). The first two species occur in the Upper Maastrichtian of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan), Russia, Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium. N. skolozdrownae is limited to Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium, while N. aff. kazimiroviensis occurs in the Volga Basin (Russia) and Kazakhstan. The evolution of the N. kazimiroviensis group from a member of the Belemnella praearkhangelskii group of Central Russia or Kazakhstan or from the Belemnitella americana group from New Jersey (USA) is discussed applying Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Multidimensional Comparative Analysis. A member of the Bt. americana group – ? Neo-belemnella subfusiformis (Whitfield, 1892) – is referred to the genus Neobelemnella Naidin, 1975 albeit with a query. This supports the hypothesis that the N. kazimiroviensis group could have evolved from a North American precursor.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article describes scholarly and teaching activities of the Russian researcher of Tibet B.I. Kuznetsov (1931–1985) as well as his private collection of archival materials. The documents from the collection have been assessed and classified into three categories: 1. Scholarly works and their background (1965–1998): 2. Service documentation (1962–1985): 3. Materials from other people (1959–1979). In 1956, after graduating from the department of Chinese philology at the faculty of Oriental Studies at Leningrad University, Bronislav Ivanovich joined a Ph.D. program and began studying the Tibetan language first under V.S. Vorobyov-Desyatovsky (1927–1956) and later under B.I. Pankratov (1892–1979). During his postgraduate Ph.D. studies, he also started to teach the Tibetan language at the faculty of Oriental Studies. Some details of his scholarly and teaching activities have been mentioned in his letters to R.E. Pubaev (1928–1991). The life of B.I. Kuznetsov, a teacher and researcher of Tibetan studies, is of a great interest to scholars as an integral part of the historical development of Tibetan studies in Russia.

Abstract:
(CERTEAU, 1982: 64).

Abstract:
SUMMARYCyclocoelidae Stossich, 1902 are medium-sized to large digenean bird parasites. Although these parasites bear few visible autapomorphic signs, and their diagnostic characters are unstable in response to the pressure applied during preparation, the numerous hitherto suggested re-classifications within the family have not been supported by any molecular analysis. We analyse here cyclocoelids found during the extensive examination of central European birds performed from 1962 to 2016, provide comparative measurements, host spectra, prevalence and intensity, and provide and analyse sequences of four DNA loci of five of the cyclocoelid species. Cyclocoleum Brandes, 1892 appears paraphyletic; thus we suggest the re-classification of Cyclocoleum obscurum (Leidy, 1887) as Harrahium obscurum (Leidy, 1887) Sitko and Heneberg comb. n. Molecular phylogenetics questioned also the validity of Cyclocoelinae Stossich, 1902 and Hyptiasminae Dollfus, 1948, which formed a single clade, whereas Allopyge Johnston, 1913, Prohyptiasmus Witenberg, 1923 and Morishitium Witenberg, 1928 formed another clade. Haematotrephinae Dollfus, 1948 are newly characterized as having a pretesticular or intertesticular ovary that forms a triangle with the testes. Analyses of non-European genera of the Cyclocoelidae and an examination of the position of families within Echinostomata La Rue, 1926 are needed.

Invertebrate Systematics 14, no. 4 (2000): 433. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/it99014.

Abstract:
Systematists have frequently interpreted lateral compression of the idiosoma in post-larval instars of water mites as a synapomorphy indicating common ancestry. This paper re-examines the evidence to support this assumption and concludes that lateral flattening has occurred independently several times during water mite evolution, and especially often in various basal clades of the superfamily Hygrobatoidea. Reassessment of the phylogenetic relationships of the genera attributed to these clades results in improved understanding of the early evolution and biogeography of hygrobatoid water mites and necessitates redefinition of several clades and significant revision of the family classification. The South African genus Karlvietsia K.O. Viets, 1962 is transferred from the subfamily Frontipodopsinae of the family Aturidae to the Hygrobatidae. The Australian genera Tasmanaxona Cook, 1986, Wheenyella Cook, 1986 and Wheenyoides Harvey, 1990 are also removed from Frontipodopsinae and placed with the genus Wettina Piersig, 1892, here removed from the family Pionidae, in the family Wettinidae Cook, stat. nov. Based on apparent relationship with members of Wettinidae, the South African genus Stormaxonella K.O. Viets, 1962 is transferred from the Aturidae and provisionally placed in the Wettinidae. The clade including the predominately Holarctic genus Lethaxona K.H. Viets, 1932 and the Western Hemisphere genus LethaxonellaCook, 1963 is recognised as the probable sister group of Wettinidae, and these genera are consequently removed from the Aturidae and placed in Lethaxonidae, fam. nov. The genus Frontipodopsis Walter is reassigned from Aturidae to the now monobasic family Frontipodopsidae K.H. Viets, stat. nov. Finally, five new species are described, including Frontipodopsis (Frontipodopsella) sudafricanus, sp. nov., Wettina occidentalis, sp. nov., Karlvietsia simplex, sp. nov., Hygrobates (Hygrobates) gereckei, sp. nov. and Hygrobates (Hygrobatides)frontipodoides, sp. nov., and both Karlvietsia brevipalpis K.O. Viets and K. angustipalpis K.O. Viets are redescribed.

Abstract:
The Montenegrin fauna of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea is not satisfactorily studied. This is evidenced by the small number of species from this superfamily reported from Montenegro, despite the richness of the country’s habitats, especially high-mountain meadows, pastures, lush canyons, riverside, coastal dunes and old forests. Moreover, significant is the greater number of species of scarabaeoid beetles in neighbouring countries. Therefore, we aim to supplement the current information on the distribution of the taxa of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea in the country. The presented scarabaeoid beetles were caught during three expeditions: the first in May/June 2019, the second in May/June 2021, and the third in July 2021. As a result of this study, we have collected 2130 beetles belonging to 107 species and five families of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae, Trogidae, Lucanidae, Ochodaeidae and Scarabaeidae. The 28 days of the faunistic study confirmed the occurrence in Montenegro of 54.2% of the scarabaeoid species hitherto known from this country and added 16 new species that had not been previously recorded: Odonteus armiger (Scopoli, 1772), Trox sabulosus (Linnaeus, 1758), Ochodaeus integriceps Semenov, 1891, Agrilinus convexus (Erichson, 1848), Melinopterus reyi (Reitter, 1892), M. sphacelatus (Panzer, 1798), Phalacronothus biguttatus (Germar, 1824), Trichonotulus scrofa (Fabricius, 1787), Psammodius nocturnus Reitter, 1892, Platytomus tibialis (Fabricius, 1798), Pleurophorus mediterranicus Pittino & Mariani, 1986, P. pannonicus Petrovitz, 1961, Rhyssemus berytensis Marseul, 1878, Onthophagus ovatus (Linnaeus, 1767), Rhizotrogus aestivus (Olivier, 1789) and Chaetopteroplia segetum (Herbst, 1783). Six species and three subspecies that are typical for the Balkan Peninsula were also found: Trypocopris alpinus balcanicola (Mikšić, 1954), Onthophagus panici Petrovitz, 1964, Amphimallon solstitiale simplicissimum (Müller, 1902), Omaloplia illyrica (Baraud, 1965), Triodontella dalmatica (Baraud, 1962), Chaetopteroplia segetum straminea (Brullé, 1832), Anomala matzenaueri Reitter, 1918, Exomala adriatica (Petrovitz, 1968) and Oxythyrea dulcis Reitter, 1899. Thus, the number of currently known scarabaeoid species in Montenegro has increased to 184. Twenty-four species of scarabaeoid beetles are illustrated. Our results indicate insufficient knowledge of the Scarabaeoidea of Montenegro and, at the same time, their diversity and the presence of rare species among them. High-mountain and coastal communities of coprophagic scarabaeoid beetles, as well as communities of scarabaeoid beetles inhabiting coastal dunes, are especially valuable, worthy of protection. Therefore, further research and new expeditions to Montenegro are highly desirable.

Abstract:
A new arboreal species of the microhylid genus Cophixalus Boettger, 1892 is described from montane rainforest on Papua New Guinea’s central cordillera. With a male SUL exceeding 44.0 mm, the new species is among the largest members of the genus; the only other Papuan species known to reach this size is C. riparius Zweifel, 1962. The new species differs from C. riparius in a small number of mensural characters and by its distinct advertisement call, a single explosive ‘bark’ uttered singly or in rapid series. In contrast, calls of C. riparius recorded near the type locality are a series of drawn out, rasping croaks. Calls of the two species are analysed and compared. The two species also appear to have different ecologies, with the new species found only high in trees, while C. riparius is often encountered in vegetation on or near the forest floor. Examination of osteological features revealed the presence of cartilaginous procoracoids in both species, representing the first records of procoracoids in the speciose genus Cophixalus. Lack of procoracoids is traditionally considered an important diagnostic character for defining Cophixalus but both species also lack clavicles, a character considered diagnostic for Cophixalus and a key feature distinguishing the genus from the closely related Oreophryne Boettger, 1895. Because preliminary published genetic data indicate that they are nested within Cophixalus, we retain both species in that genus until a comprehensive molecular phylogeny of Cophixalus and related genera, particularly Oreophryne, is completed.

Abstract:
This study explores the performance of Ki Manteb Soedarsono’s Dewaruci and Bima characters in it. As a carangan play (contemporary), Dewaruci is the most popular play. The purpose of this study is to describe the elements of Dewaruci puppet performance and how the concept of kasampurnan in Javanese cultural psychology was initiated by Suryomentaram (1892-1962). This is qualitative research with a psychological approach using the method of reading, taking notes, and studying literature. The data in a form of performances and texts were collected from Dewaruci scripts and puppet videos on Kanal Seni Gelar YouTube channel. We combine Dewaruci script with the puppeteer Ki Manteb and other sources, in addition, to conduct a critical analysis to identify kasampurnan life concept that Bima does in this play from Suryomentaram’s perspective. The result of the study shows that the Dewaruci puppet show by Ki Manteb has the advantage of being flexible and able to adapt to the context and needs of the audience. The concept of kasampurnan in Dewaruci as a representation of Javanese culture can be explained from the perspective of Suryomentaram indigenous psychology. This finding contradicts previous psychological analyses in literature and art. Previous psychology research used the theory of Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, and Alfred Adler. However, we argue that the theory cannot always explain the cultural context because of cultural differences between theory and objects. Therefore, this research is relevant in the spirit of science decolonization to see humans in Javanese culture according to their context and culture.

Abstract:
The most outstanding archaeologist and professor at John Casimir University in Lviv as well as and a acknowledged politician (among others the Prime Minister (1934– 1935) of the Second Republic of Poland) was Professor Leon Kozłowski (1892–1944), a student of E. Majewski from Warsaw, R.R. Schmidt from the University of Tübingen and W. Demetrykiewicz from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. As a professor of John Casimir University he cooperated with V. Gordon Childe from the UK and H. Breuil from France, the most outstanding archaeologists in Europe at that time. His publications stand out with a clear and well-argued reasoning, great dash and thorough knowledge of the materials and concepts of the time. He was also an excellent teacher of many Polish and Ukrainian archaeologists. After 1939, he was imprisoned and tortured in the Soviet Union and Germany, where he died in unknown circumstances in 1944. Among his pupils was Helena Cehak-Hołubowiczowa (1902–1979), who, with her husband Włodzimierz Hołubowicz (1908–1962), worked in the years 1931–1939 at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius and between 1943 and 1945 they were the forced labourers in Austria. They both, since 1950, were employed at the University of Wroclaw and developed archaeology according to the ideas of Leon Kozłowski. Włodzimierz Hołubowicz developed the methodics and methodology of archaeology and Helena Cehak-Hołubowiczowa dealt with the religious beliefs of prehistoric and early medieval societies. Th ey educated many students who are now employees of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Wroclaw, and other institutions.

In the present contribution, the family is revised in its entirety for the first time, including all previous names and 33 new species, 24 in the genus Charinus Simon, 1892: C. alagoanus sp. nov., C. apiaca sp. nov., C. carinae sp. nov., C. carioca sp. nov., C. carvalhoi sp. nov., C. cearensis sp. nov., C. diamantinus sp. nov., C. euclidesi sp. nov., C. goitaca sp. nov., C. guayaquil sp. nov., C. imperialis sp. nov., C. loko sp. nov., C. magalhaesi sp. nov., C. miskito sp. nov., C. mocoa sp. nov., C. monasticus sp. nov., C. palikur sp. nov., C. perquerens sp. nov., C. puri sp. nov., C. renneri sp. nov., C. sooretama sp. nov., C. souzai sp. nov., C. susuwa sp. nov., C. una sp. nov.; eight in the genus Sarax Simon, 1892: S. bilua sp. nov., S. dunni sp. nov., S. gravelyi sp. nov., S. indochinensis sp. nov., S. lembeh sp. nov., S. palau sp. nov., S. rahmadii sp. nov., S. tiomanensis sp. nov.; and one in the genus Weygoldtia Miranda et al., 2018: W. consonensis sp. nov. Taxonomic keys to the 132 species (excluding four nomina dubia) are presented and several taxonomic rearrangements implemented. Four subspecies are elevated to species level: Charinus cavernicolus Weygoldt, 2006, C. elegans Weygoldt, 2006, C. longipes Weygoldt, 2006, and Sarax bispinosus (Nair, 1934). Sarax batuensis Roewer, 1962 is removed from synonymy with Sarax buxtoni (Gravely, 1915) and S. buxtoni newly synonymized with Sarax rimosus (Simon, 1901). Stygophrynus moultoni Gravely, 1915 is transferred to Sarax, resulting in Sarax moultoni (Gravely, 1915) comb. nov. Ten species are transferred from Charinus to Sarax, resulting in new combinations: S. abbatei (Delle Cave, 1986) comb. nov., S. bengalensis (Gravely, 1911) comb. nov., S. dhofarensis (Weygoldt, Pohl & Polak, 2002) comb. nov., S. ioanniticus (Kritscher, 1959) comb. nov., S. israelensis (Miranda et al., 2016) comb. nov., S. omanensis (Delle Cave, Gardner & Weygoldt, 2009) comb. nov., S. pakistanus (Weygoldt, 2005) comb. nov., S. seychellarum (Kraepelin, 1898) comb. nov., S. socotranus (Weygoldt, Pohl & Polak, 2002) comb. nov. and S. stygochthobius (Weygoldt & Van Damme, 2004) comb. nov.

Abstract:
After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Albania became a possible land of conquest for Italy, France, and Austria. Explorations and surveys of the newly liberated territory involved numerous scientific a nd military expeditions. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Reale Società Geografica Italiana had been carrying out a systematic study of Albanian landscape, mainly aimed at geographical research. Relevant Italian scholars and geographers travelled to Tirana and Valona. Antonio Baldacci (1867-1950) between 1892 and 1902, Roberto Almagià (1884-1962), Aldo Sestini (1904-1988) in 1940, Bruno Castiglioni (1898-1945) who recorded geomorphological aspects as an army officer following Italian troops. Two expeditions in 1940 allowed them to collect all the information needed to publish the fundamental monograph “L’Albania”, printed in 1943. Bruno Castiglioni oversaw the geomorphological aspects of the study, Ferdinando Milone covered anthropology and economics, and Aldo Sestini investigated the geographical features of each region. Another landmark contribution is Antonio Baldacci’s Itinerari albanesi: (1892-1902), which described discovering an obscure land, its natural features and the built environment. The contribution for the sixth issue of Sophie draws on a photographic campaign carried out between July 2016 and June 2018, and currently being finalised in the form of a Catalogue of Landscape Typologies. The author c onducts a photographic c ampaign a long the s ame itineraries covered by the aforementioned geographers, discovering similarities and differences with the contemporary Albanian landscape. Manuscripts, diplomatic accounts, publications, and photographs produced by Italian travellers of the early twentieth century are being compared with the current status of the visual environment. Tourism-related activities have altered the scenery of the coast, particularly the so-called Riviera that connects Vlorë with Sarandë, while other sectors of the northern mainland have remained relatively unchanged. This ongoing research is expected to inform a general catalogue of Albanian landscapes, intended as a tool for planning future interventions across the country. The catalogue could be a useful tool to build an alternative visual cartography. The Catalogue of Landscape Typologies collects four hundred geolocated shots of selected views, which have been classified and redrawn to identify recurring features and visual landmarks. Images are being disassembled in coherent morphological layers: woods, agricultural plains, cultivated slopes, spontaneous vegetation fields, urbanization areas, water bodies and the profile of the mountains. Contemporary Albania and other countries in the Balkans are rapidly changing the quality of its built environment in an attempt to emerge and progress towards the European standards. On the other hand, one could argue that unique views can be lost along the way.

Abstract:
The onthophagine fauna of the Arabian Peninsula is reviewed. New data from public and private collections are given. The total number of Onthophagini known from the Peninsula now stands at 30 species, without taking into account dubious records, belonging to seven genera. Of these 30 species, three (Onthophagus aethiopicus d’Orbigny, 1902, O. falsus Gillet, 1925 and O. frontalis Raffray, 1877) are reported for the first time from the Arabian Peninsula, six species (Digitonthophagus eucatta Génier in Génier & Moretto, 2017, Onthophagus aethiopicus d’Orbigny, 1902, O. brittoni Paulian, 1948, O. falsus Gillet, 1925, O. rugulipennis Fairmaire, 1887, and O. trapezicornis d’Orbigny, 1902) are new records from Saudi Arabia, three (D. eucatta, O. aethiopicus and O. frontalis) are new from Yemen and five (O. bicolor Raffray, 1877, O. latipennis d’Orbigny, 1898, O. nitidulus Klug, 1856, O. quadriarmatus Fairmaire 1892 and O. sellatus Klug, 1845) are new from Oman. Furthermore, Onthophagus infuscatus Klug, 1845 is recorded from Djibouti for the first time. For all the treated species a general distribution, literature citations and eventual unpublished records are provided. A new synonymy (Onthophagus saudiensis Frey, 1962 under O. sticticus Harold, 1867) is proposed. Most of the species were recorded from locations in southern Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen, south Tropic of Cancer. Yemen and Saudi Arabia have the highest species numbers, hosting the richest fauna with 24 and 23 species, respectively. The majority of the Onthophagini fauna (73.33 %) has Afrotropical and Afrotropical-Palaearctic affinities, while the Palaearctic and Oriental-Palaearctic species are both represented by 6.66 %. The four Arabian endemisms represent the 13.33 % of the whole fauna. Lastly, a dichotomous key for the identification of Arabian onthophagine species is provided and a redescription of Onthophagus brittoni is supplied.

Abstract:
The Serbian fauna of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea is relatively well-known compared to the neighbouring countries. Many common species known from Serbia’s neighbouring countries are not recorded in Serbia, despite the richness of the country’s habitats, such as high-mountain meadows, pastures, deep gorges, riverbanks (including the exceptionally valuable sandy banks of the Danube) and old forests. Therefore, we aim to supplement the current information on the distribution of the species of the Serbian scarabaeoid beetles. The presented scarabaeoid beetles were caught during seven expeditions in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019 (two expeditions), 2021, and 2022. As a result, 2031 beetles belonging to 120 species and five families of the superfamily Scarabaeoidea (Geotrupidae, Trogidae, Lucanidae, Glaphyridae, Scarabaeidae) were observed. In less than two months of the faunistic study, the authors confirmed the occurrence in Serbia of 49.5% of the scarabaeoid species previously known from this country and added 13 new species that had not been previously recorded: Eulasia pareyssei (Brullé, 1832), Pygopleurus apicalis (Brullé, 1832), Melinopterus reyi (Reitter, 1892), Nimbus johnsoni (Baraud, 1976), Planolinoides borealis (Gyllenhal, 1827), Copris hispanus Linnaeus, 1764, C. umbilicatus Abeille de Perrin, 1901, Cheironitis furcifer (P. Rossi, 1792), Onthophagus dellacasai Pittino & Mariani, 1981, O. similis (Scriba, 1790), Chaetonyx schatzmayri Mariani, 1946, Holochelus costulatus (Frivaldszky, 1835), and Omaloplia corcyrae (Baraud, 1965). Eight species and one subspecies typical for the Balkan Peninsula were also found: Jekelius punctulatus (Jekel, 1866), Pygopleurus apicalis, P. chrysonotus (Brullé, 1832), Onthophagus dellacasai, Chaetonyx robustus robustus Schaum, 1862, Ch. schatzmayri, Omaloplia corcyrae, O. illyrica (Baraud, 1965), and Triodontella dalmatica (Baraud, 1962). Thus, the number of currently known scarabaeoid species in Serbia has increased to 229. Our results indicate insufficient knowledge of the Scarabaeoidea of Serbia. Therefore, further research and new expeditions to Serbia are highly desirable. High-mountain and Danubian communities of dung beetles are priceless and deserve protection. Twenty-one species of scarabaeoid beetles are illustrated.

Abstract:
Abstract:
An 85-year-old villager named Erieza Kintu died at Kabubu in the county of Bulemezi, kingdom of Buganda, sometime in 1965. His passing was virtually unnoticed, except by relatives and a few neighbors. Through my research trips between 1962 and 1964 had on several occasions brought me to within a few miles of his house, I never met Kintu. Yet he is one of my best sources for the history of Buganda in the 1890s. Indeed, his memory of the so called “rebellion” by Kabaka Mwanga against the British in 1897 is the single best source I know, particularly valuable as an “insider” eyewitness participant. Even more importantly, unlike the earlier “official” histories of Mwanga's uprising, Kintu's view is from the point of the losers in the conflict—those who had resisted the new order of Christianity, private land tenure, and protectorate status within the British empire. As so often happens with the vanquished, their history was suppressed by the victors, who—through the control of schooling and the printing press— ensured that only their own version of the conflict would become history. Yet somehow, at the age of almost seventy years the non-literate Erieza Kintu managed to dictate his oral memoirs to the manager of the Baganda Cooperative Society Press, and the result was Sulutani Anatoloka, a printed pamphlet that went on sale in Kampala priced one shilling a copy. After a few days no doubt the small edition was sold out and disappeared from view. Fortunately, one copy wound up in the hands of a prominent anthropologist from the University of Chicago, Lloyd Fallers, who was director of the East African Institute of Social Research at Makerere University in the early 1950s. Years later, when Fallers returned to Chicago, he brought back the pamphlet and offered me a photocopy, which I translated from Luganda into English in 1964. At that time I knew nothing about the author, except what was printed in his memoir covering the years from 1892 to 1899, nor did I know the circumstances surrounding the publication, or even the date when it had been printed. So here was a mysterious, unique, and potentially invaluable historical source—if only one could investigate its provenance.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Periodo: Principado (27 a. C. – 284 d. C.) ABSTRACTThe Roman institution of the domicilium turns the subject into a resident. It usually designates the place of prolonged residence of the incola or inhabitant who has emigrated to a community, as opposed to the municeps. Therefore, it is a legal link between the city and the person who emigrates there. As opposed to the expression of the origo in epigraphic texts, which is very common, the manifestation of the domicile occurs only exceptionally, in view of the scant number of surviving references, and its enunciation is very similar to that which indicates provenance. Abstract:
Abstract:
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The Carte Rouge is one of the most notorious Hungarian ethnographical maps to date. The map was planned and executed by Count Pál Teleki (1879&amp;ndash;1941) in 1918. Teleki, who was the chief secretary of the Hungarian Geographical Society, later served as the prime minister of Hungary twice within his political career. The first edition of this particular map was published on the 21st of February in 1919. Teleki played a central role in arranging, ascribing and allocating Hungarian geographical works for the peace-negotiations following the First World War. The term “Carte Rouge”, derives from the French; critiquing the subjective colouring of the map. During this period of time, political correspondents and those in power were responsible for planning such maps in order to support their own political programs with regards to their respective national ties and territorial claims.</p><p>The red pockets on the map signify areas which designate nationality, ethnicity, and language claims, on the part of both the locals and/or the author of the map. Particularly of note, is that this map was viewed and used by the leading politicians of the Entente-powers.</p><p>On the 16th of January in 1920, the day on which the Hungarian delegations received the peace terms of the First World War, Albert Aponyi gave a speech of significant weight in front of the Entente representatives in Paris, after the peace terms were received. Aponyi (1846&amp;ndash;1933), who was the head of the Hungarian delegation, showed this particular map to those present at this meeting following his speech, as justification and proof of his points. Apponyi sent the map to Teleki and to the members of various delegations. Isaiah Bowman (1878&amp;ndash;1950), for example, also had a private copy of the map. Bowman's critique of Teleki's ethnographical map is most significant in this discussion:</p><p>„<i>This idea has occurred to me since examining a map by Count Teleki which gives altogether a wrong impression of the distribution of Magyars in Transylvania that we ought to keep a fairly good collection of propaganda maps, of which I have here several very striking examples, and sometime after I return I should like to write a little paper on the various types of lies and liars that I met in this form of cartography. It would be good popular education, because so many people regard what appears on a map as gospel truth, and almost none of the people, who print maps, understand map technique sufficiently well to distinguish between the various principles followed in the construction of maps. (…).</i>”</p><p>It is not certain as to whether Bowman was indeed writing about this particular map, however Teleki had at that point and time-edited no other ethnographical map. Others, for example, the Austrian Randolf Rungaldier (1892&amp;ndash;1981) had a very positive opinion about the Carte Rouge.</p><p>In total, and to the best of my knowledge, the Carte Rouge has 12 editions and 27 various versions.</p><p>In the following analysis, I will consider how the Carte Rouge can be compared to other, similar international examples of the region, based on archival research I conducted in Paris, London, Budapest and Milwaukee. For instance, Emmanuel de Martonne (1873&amp;ndash;1955), who also adopted a critical approach to the Carte Rouge, planned a comparable ethnographical map of Romania. This map used another method of cartographic representation; nonetheless, the various territorial concepts designated by the colour-selection, the borders and the represented (and not represented) territories are facets that have similar features.</p><p>Later Teleki &amp;ndash; as member of the Mossul-Commission &amp;ndash; designed an ethnographical map of the Turkish-Iraqi border-area, which afforded him international professional recognition. The method of cartographic representation was the same, as was utilized in the creation of the Carte Rouge.</p><p>Resultantly, the Carte Rouge inspired the production of other ethnographical maps in Hungary as well as in other countries. In Hungary, Ferenc Fodor (1887&amp;ndash;1962) &amp;ndash; as the member of the Hungarian Peace-Preparation Office (Béke-előkészítő Iroda) &amp;ndash; edited a manuscript map about Central-Europe using the same "representing-method". This map was published under the name of G. Bery in 1938. A part of this map was also reused as a propaganda poster. Later, during the Second World War Imre Jakabffy (1915&amp;ndash;2006) continued this form of mapping with a slightly modified version of this method of cartographic representation at the Institute of Political Science (Államtudományi Intézet) in Budapest. Subsequently, other ethnographical maps were edited using this method of cartographic representation by the French and by Romanians.</p><p>In sum, this map was a typical product of the period, as it supported a particular territorial concept. The opinions about the map &amp;ndash; not independent from the political context &amp;ndash; were very differential in form. Regardless, this method of cartographic representation had an extended international carrier in the fields of geography and cartography for years to come afterwards.</p></p>
