All the root inhabiting migratory endoparasitic nematode populations of Radopholus procured from banana crop of Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala were identified as Radopholus similis. Heat killed females were straight to slightly ventrally curved posteriorly. Female’s head was low, rounded, continuous or slightly setoff with the body contour. Females were 500-660 µm long and were comparatively longer than males. Males had button shaped head set off by a constriction; female with three to five lip annuli, four crenate and areolated lateral incisures, stylet 14-18 µm long with rounded knobs, vulva post-equatorial (58%), sometimes with slight protuberant lips, ovary paired and equally developed, oesophageal gland overlapped the intestine dorsally, tail elongate-conoid with narrowly rounded terminus. The stylet length (µm), width of stylet knob (µm), distance of excretory pore from anterior end (µm), distance from head to basal bulb (µm), lateral field structure, shape of stylet knob, head region, position of phasmid, tail shape with its terminus, morphometric values like m%, o% and v% and a, c and c´ ratios of females were stable (CV<12%) features. There is an existence of intra-specific variability in the morphological and morphometric features of R. similis. The main morphological diversity was observed with P% of male and female, b ratio of female and stylet length, distance of DEGO from stylet base, o% and T% of male. All the root inhabiting migratory endoparasitic nematode populations of Radopholus Thorne, 1949 procured from banana of Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala were identified as Radopholus similis (Cobb, 1893) Thorne, 1949. A high degree of intra-specific morphometric variability was observed with regard to the total body length (µm), body width (µm), stylet length (µm), distance of dosrsal oesophageal gland orifice (DEGO) from stylet base (µm), number of lip annuli, lip height (µm), distance from head to basal bulb (µm), distance of anus from anterior end (µm), tail length (µm), anal body width (µm), distance of phasmid from tail terminus (µm), number of lateral lines, width of lateral field (µm), b ratio and P % among females of R. similis. Morphometric features like m%, o% and v% of females of R. similis showed least variability. These can be considered as the stable morphometric characters for discrimination of females of R. similis. Ratios like ‘a’ and ‘c’ of females of R. similis were found moderately variable. The morphometric feature and of male i.e. distance from head to basal bulb (µm) was found least variable; while number of lip annuli and spicule length (µm) were moderately variable.

Otto Sverdrup, born 1854, is one of the main polar explorers in Norway. However he is much less known not only than Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, but also than Hjalmar Johansen, who was a member of Nansen´s Fram expedition 1893-96, and also lesser known than Eivind Astrup, who took part in two of Robert Peary´s expeditons across northern Greenland in 1891-92 and 1893-94. Hjalmar Johansen and Eivind Astrup published their own accounts from the expeditons: Selv-anden paa 86°14'. Optegnelser fra Den Norske polarfærd 1893-96 (1898) and Blandt Nordpolens naboer (1895). Astrup´s book was reprinted in 1990 and 2004, and Johansen´s book was reprinted in 1942, 1949 and 2003. They are both included in the Polar Library, together with books by Nansen and Amundsen (the Polar Liberary is by Kagge publishing house).Otto Sverdrup´s polar expedition report New Land (Nyt land), a two volume work from 1903, from the second Fram expedition 1898-1902 to north-west Greenland and northern Canada, is in comparison never reprinted. He is not in the Polar library. And his name is among readers of travelogues very much forgotten. Why is this, and what kind of book is New Land?

In this article, I map some of the US-Brazil networks of intellectuals who helped to develop the field of Afro-Brazilian studies in the 1930s. While discussing the emergence and institutionalization of the field, I highlight the role of figures such as Rüdiger Bilden (1893-1980), Melville Herskovits (1895-1963), Donald Pierson (1900-1995), Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987), Arthur Ramos (1903-1949), Ruth Landes (1908-1991), and Edison Carneiro (1912-1972). Together, these scholars from the United States and Brazil were key to the development of Afro-Brazilian studies as an interdisciplinary field.

We obtained and analyzed whole genome data for more than 160 representatives of skipper butterflies (family Hesperiidae) from all known subfamilies, tribes and most distinctive genera. We found that two genera, Katreus Watson, 1893 and Ortholexis Karsch, 1895, which are sisters, are well-separated from all other major phylogenetic lineages and originate near the base of the Hesperiidae tree, prior to the origin of some subfamilies. Due to this ancient origin compared to other subfamilies, this group is described as Katreinae Grishin, subfam. n. DNA sequencing of primary type specimens reveals that Ortholexismelichroptera Karsch, 1895 is not a female of Ortholexisholocausta Mabille, 1891, but instead a female of Ortholexisdimidia Holland, 1896. This finding establishes O.dimidia as a junior subjective synonym of O.melichroptera. Furthermore, we see that Chamunda Evans, 1949 does not originate within Pyrginae Burmeister, 1878, but, unexpectedly, forms an ancient lineage of its own at the subfamily rank: Chamundinae Grishin, subfam. n. Finally, a group of two sister genera, Barca de Nicéville, 1902 and Apostictopterus Leech, [1893], originates around the time Hesperiinae Latreille, 1809 have split from their sister clade. A new subfamily Barcinae Grishin, subfam. n. sets them apart from all other Hesperiidae.

AbstractLim Keng Lian (1893–1968) was a prominent tea merchant in Singapore from the mid-1920s until his death. He also concerned himself with the educational needs of the Chinese in Singapore and Malaya. During the 1930s and 1940s, he worked tirelessly to raise overseas Chinese awareness of the plight of China. As a supporter of the Kuomintang, he made his mark as a leading overseas Chinese representative in the party, remaining loyal even after the KMT's defeat in 1949. Despite his dedication to the welfare of the overseas Chinese, his foray into Chinese politics and his success in the tea business, Lim remains largely neglected in overseas Chinese studies. This article mainly traces his attempts at reforming overseas Chinese education in the 1930s, his work as a community leader among the Hokkien community in Malaya, his entry into Chinese politics as a wartime parliamentarian, and his brief stint as Deputy Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission in China.

Forest coverage is important geographical factor for every country, so it is very important to regulate, control and supervise it. The purpose of this paper – to analyze forest changes in Aukštadvaris Regional Park in the period from 1893 to 2015. In order to reach the goal, certain tasks were accomplished. Firstly, with the use of GIS and cartographic sources of different periods (1:21 000 – 1:25 000 scale topographic maps of the Republic of Lithuania forest cadastral digital data) to identify forest areas of Aukštadvaris Regional Park in 1893, 1934, 1949, 1984, 2000, 2015, changes were identified and their spatial distribution were examined. During the study maps were made to reflect the mentioned years, changes that had occurred during period between the years, all of this information were analyzed, evaluated and described. Second, causes and factors of forest changes in Aukštadvaris Regional Park area were examined. It showed that the main reason for this was government policies, wars, lack of natural-growth control. Finally, the results, information and trends were compared with the Lithuanian forest situation and trends. In this way, problems, regional park is facing, were highlighted – too many fast growing forest coverage, because in Lithuania forest coverage were both increasing and decreasing over the period of time, and right now it stands at 33,4 %, but in the regional park of Aukštadvaris, during analyzed period has only been rising and right now stands at 54,8 %. If the situation will not change and appropriate measures will not be taken, forest coverage can reach 60%.

The poorly known type species of Acrotreta, A. subconica Kutorga, 1848 [=Spondylotreta faceta Gorjansky, 1969], is redescribed and a neotype selected from the lower Arenig (Billingen Stage, Oeland Series) Päite beds in the environs of St. Petersburg (Tosna river), Russia. Acrotreta is also the type of the lingulate brachiopod family Acrotretidae Schuchert, 1893, and order Acrotretida Kuhn, 1949. Four new species are described: A. korynevskii from the upper Tremadoc–lower Arenig, South Ural Mountains; A. tallinnensis from the upper Arenig (Volkhov Stage), Tallinn, northern Estonia; A. nobilis from the Llanvirn (Kunda Stage), Siljan district, Sweden; A. cooperi from the Llandeilo, Alabama, USA. Acrotreta has many features in common with Spondylotreta Cooper, 1956. The type species of the latter, S. concentrica Cooper, 1956, from the Llandeilo Pratt Ferry beds at Pratt Ferry, Alabama, is refigured.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Inspired by Armin W. Geertz’ research into Hopi religion and culture, I focused on the religion of another Native American people, the Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) on the American Northwest Coast for the seminar celebrating Geertz’ 70-year birthday. The material on Kwakwaka’wakw is heavily influenced by George Hunt (1854-1933), who worked as a consultant for both Franz Boas and Edward Curtis, but is also to be regarded as an anthropologist in his own right. I choose to concentrate on the ritual aspects of George Hunt’s life story and touch on Hunt’s performance at the Chicago World’s Fair 1893, his participation in the production of Edward Curtis’ feature-length, narrative, ethnographic film In the Land of the Head Hunters(1914), and Hunt’s work as collector for museums and text-editions in collaboration with Franz Boas. In the last part of the paper, I discuss the autobiographical text on his initiation as a shaman “I Desired to Learn the Ways of the Shamans”, published by Boas in 1930, and made famous by Lévi-Strauss in the article “Le sorcier et sa magie” (1949)/ “The Sorcerer and His Magic” (1963) under the initiate’s shaman-name, Quesalid.

The genera Diplocladus Fairmaire and Strotocera Schenkling are taxonomically revised. Thirty four species are recognized within this revision (11 Diplocladus, 23 Strotocera). Diplocladus tilloides Fairmaire, 1887 n. syn., and Diplocladus rhodesianus Péringuey, 1899 n. syn., are placed in synonymy with Diplocladus louvelii Spinola, 1844; Strotocera sjoestedti Schenkling, 1908 n. syn., is synonymized with Strotocera convexa Hintz, 1905; Strotocera multisignata Pic, 1926 n. syn., is synonymized with Strotocera emerita Péringuey, 1899; Strotocera orangica Kuwert, 1893 n. syn., is synonymized with Strotocera versicolor Chevrolat, 1842 and Strotocera unimaculata Pic, 1953, n. comb., n. syn., is synonymized with Diplocladus discoidalis Schenkling, 1908. The phylogenetic relationships of Glossiphoniidae, a leech family characterised by its high degree of parental care, were investigated with the combined use of morphological data and three molecular datasets. There was strong support for monophyly of most accepted genera in the group, many of which are consistent with eyespot morphology. The genera Desserobdella Barta & Sawyer, 1990 and Oligobdella Moore, 1918 are suppressed as junior synonyms of Placobdella Blanchard, 1893 and thus recognising each of Placobdella picta (Verrill, 1872) Moore, 1906, Placobdella phalera (Graf, 1899) Moore, 1906, and Placobdella biannulata (Moore, 1900), comb. nov. The species Glossiphonia elegans (Verrill, 1872) Castle, 1900 and Helobdella modesta (Verrill, 1872), comb. nov. are resurrected for the North American counterparts to European non-sanguivorous species. Glossphonia baicalensis (Stschegolew, 1922), comb. nov. is removed from the genus Torix Blanchard 1898 and Alboglossiphonia quadrata (Moore, 1949) Sawyer, 1986 is removed from the genus Hemiclepsis Vejdovsky, 1884. The biogeographic implications of the phylogenetic hypothesis are evaluated in the context of what is already known for vertebrate hosts and Tertiary continental arrangements.

The thesis is a history of the Open Brethren in Scotland. Its aim is to analyse the development of the movement incorporating its social history. A sequence of chapters traces the expansion and contraction of the movement and its internal development from its inception in 1838 until 1999. After an introductory chapter in which the aims and methods of the work will be set out, Chapter 2 examines the largely Bowesite movement of the 1840s and 1850s. Chapter 3 analyses the crucial decade which followed the 1859 Revival. In these chapters external growth and internal development are studied in conjunction with each other. The period of greatest increase for the movement was the late Victorian period and Chapter 4 analyses expansion until the outbreak of World War I. The Brethren were in their most developed form in the inter-war period of the twentieth century and this phase had an after-life until the mid-1960s. Chapter 6 examines patterns of growth and decline from 1914 until 1965 with, in addition, an investigation of the ethos of the movement when it was in its mature form. Complementary to Chapters 4 and 6 are Chapters 5 and 7 in which the internal development of the movement is examined for the respective periods. The classic era of the Brethren might be said to have ceased in the mid-1960s. Chapter 8 is devoted to an investigation of the spirituality of the movement from the 1830s until that decade and Chapter 9 to the relationship of the Brethren to culture and society for the same period. Chapter 10 examines the contemporary movement from the mid-1960s, analysing internal development and changes in membership size, spirituality, and attitudes to culture and society. The conclusion, Chapter 11, draws together the central themes of the thesis and presents some assessment.

Most analysts study leadership succession in communist states as a "crisis" which ensues after the death of a dominant leader. This study takes an alternative approach. It is a survey of provisions for leadership succession in the People's Republic, of China. This involves a comparison of the strategies and motivations of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in providing for their own succession.
Deng Xiaoping's more extensive provisions for leadership succession during the CCP's transition towards a more institutionalized one-party bureaucratic rule are likely to be more durable than Mao's provisions in the earlier period. Nevertheless, guarantees of smooth and regularized succession, especially of protégés promoted on the basis of personal ties within the leadership core, may be impossible to obtain.
Mao's provisions were aimed largely at what he saw as a probable, but deplorable, bureaucratic future of the PRC. Deng, on the other hand, perceives an element of opportunity in the succession process. He has tried to provide leadership that will, in his estimation, be better able to bring about China's modernization. In both leaders' provisions for succession, the elevation to the status of "heir apparent" of individuals has been a political liability to those individuals, especially when their promotion is perceived to be based largely on personal ties to the dominant leader. This liability becomes more pronounced in a period of bureaucratic, collective leadership.
Because of his shifting policy preferences, his status as charismatic leader, and the ambitious nature of his protégés, Mao Zedong was unsuccessful in providing for his own succession. Deng Xiaoping, on the other hand, has been successful in cultivating a reserve of young, well-educated cadres. These provisions, because they are extensive and exist in a more subdued, consensus-oriented political environment, may well be Deng's most enduring legacy.Arts, Faculty of

En Côte d'Ivoire, comme dans les principaux pays producteurs de sucre dans le monde, Pratylenchus zeae, Meloidogyne javanica et Helicotylenchus dihystera (Nematoda : Tylenchida) sont les trois principales espèces de nématodes les plus fréquemment et les plus abondamment associées à la culture de la canne à sucre, causant d'importantes pertes de rendement. Leur biologie au sein de leur association avec la variété B 37. 172 est abordée, notamment à travers l'étude de leur pénétration et du développement de leurs populations en relation avec les racines de bouture et les racines de tige. En outre, les réactions de cette variété en réponse à la présence de ces nématodes sont examinées tant d'un point de vue agronomique que par des études histologiques. Les résultats montrent que la variété B 37. 172 peut être considérée comme une plante-hôte sensible, permettant la multiplication et le développement de chacune des trois espèces. Cependant, les modalités des relations hôte-parasite ainsi établies diffèrent selon l'espèce considérée. P. Zeae apparait être, parmi les trois espèces étudiées, le nématode phytoparasite le plus préjudiciable pour la culture de cette variété, provoquant des réductions de croissance, à la fois des parties aériennes et souterraines des plantes, ainsi que des modifications importantes dans l'organisation cellulaire des tissus racinairesIn Ivory Coast, like in the main sugarcane producing areas throughout the world, Pratylenchus zeae, Meloidogyne javanica and Helicotylenchus dihystera (Nematoda: Tylenchida) represent the most frequently associated nematodes with this crop, causing important decreases of yield. Biology of these species, in the association with sugarcane's variety B 37. 172, is discussed, especially their penetration and population development in relation with both the sett roots and the shoot roots. On the other hand, agronomic and histopathological responses of this variety are assessed. Our results show that variety B 37. 172 is a susceptible host plant to the three nematode species. However, the host-parasite relationships are different according to the considered nematode. P. Zeae seems to be the most deterimental phytoparasitic nematode to this variety's cultivation, inducing growth reductions of aerial and subterranean parts of the plants, and important modifications in the root tissues

On ne s'est pas suffisamment intéressé à la dimension anthropologique de Freud, c'est-à-dire à la manière dont il aborde et dont il enrichit la connaissance de l'universel humain. Considérés de près, les écrits de Freud laissent entrevoir l'ambivalence de ce médecin qui ne s'élève vers les régions de l'universalité philosophique que par une "audacieuse extrapolation". Nous avons étudié ce rapport en gestation, en envisageant les relations que Freud entretint avec des pédagogues qui rejoignirent le mouvement psychanalytique des 1909. Nous avons tout d'abord montré la proximité de Freud et de ces pionniers et son extrême sympathie vis-à-vis de l'application pédagogique de la psychanalyse. Puis nous avons trace l'histoire du mouvement de pédagogie psychanalytique et envisage les raisons historiques et ontologiques de la nécessité d'une rencontre (partie I). Notre recherche s'est alors orientée dans quatre directions avec l'étude des plus importants protagonistes du mouvement : August Aichhorn ; Hans Zulliger ; Oskar Pfister ; Anna Freud. Ces quatre études sont hétérogènes à proportion de quatre fortes personnalités ; de quatre créations dans des champs de formation différents. Mais elles sont homogènes dans la mesure où elles permettent d'éclairer un double questionnement : d'une part, leur confrontation à Freud reprend la question non résolue des rapports entre psychanalyse et pédagogie et elle envisage les diverses manières dont les uns et les autres ont tenté de conjuguer deux « impossibles métiers », au début du siècle. Les résultats de cette enquête mettent en évidence une relation en miroir. Mais plus profondément, la rencontre des éducateurs et de Freud est celle de deux points de vue sur l'homme : le naturalisme et une perspective innéiste qui parait propre au métier d'éduquer. Cette rencontre soulève la question éternelle des rapports, en nous, de la nature et de la liberté.

La première partie de ce travail étudie le jaillissement de l'Ecole d'Aix dans le renouveau intellectuel du début du XXe siècle et la vie philosophique en France. La deuxième présente l'originalité de Maurice Blondel (1861-1949) dans l'Ecole d'Aix et par rapport à l'avènement de l'action comme problème philosophique -1893 : soutenance de thèse de Blondel intitulée "l'Action". La trosième aborde la spécificité de Jacques Paliard (1887-1953) dans l'Ecole d'Aix et par rapport à la philosophie de la conscience et au renouveau mystique dans l'Université française. L'Ecole d'Aix se caractérise par un réalisme intégral développé en une philosophie de l'action pour Blondel et en une philosophie de la conscience pour Paliard. Leur intuition commune se condense en une visée propre du singulier et du concret qu'exprime l'intelligibilité de l'agir. Elle s'explicite en un objet : expérience d'un élan reconduisant à l'expérience, en une attitude : attention à un dynamisme permettant de désimpliquer l'expérience en une ouverture : souci d'atteindre l'être explicitant l'expérience de ce qui échappe à l'homme. L'Ecole d'Aix se déploie en une philosophie de l'expérience, de l'insuffisance de la philosophie, de la médiation. Cette intuition se développe chez Blondel dans l'analyse de l'acte libre, chez Paliard dans celle de la perception en son rythme réflexif. Partant d'une phénoménologie de l'action, la philosophie de l'action de Blondel découvre une philosophie de la connaissance, se révèle une philosophie de la médiation par la méthode d'immanence qu'elle implique. La phénoménologie de la perception se transforme chez Paliard en une philosophie de la perception caractérisant la philosophie de la réflexion. Que ce soit par le consentement blondélien au don du surnaturel ou par la vie mystique et l'ouvertue paliardienne au mystère, l'Ecole d'Aix découvre l'intériorité humaine et sa réalisation par la complémentarité des causalités humaine et divine.

Édouard Dujardin (1861-1949), fondateur de la Revue wagnérienne et de la Revue Indépendante de littérature et d’art, n’a pas été seulement un théoricien du symbolisme, il en a été le praticien. Son œuvre littéraire entre 1885 et 1893 explore aussi bien le vers que la prose, en retrace les questionnements. Résolument engagée dans l’avant-Garde, elle ne s’attaque pas seulement à l’édifice du réalisme, elle remet en cause le modèle de la mimèsis dans une recherche formelle intense. Ainsi l’œuvre de Dujardin se fait-Elle, de manière exemplaire, témoin de cette crise du vers que traversait l’univers des lettres. Genres, formes et confrontation entre les arts délimitent ce parcours en trois parties, qui ne suit pas un plan linéaire ou chronologique, mais un questionnement spécifique déterminé par chaque ouvrage. Pour cette raison, nous avons commencé par son théâtre, qui soulevait la question de l’identité du personnage. Le prénom Antonia nous a ainsi servi de fil conducteur pour aborder la relation vers et prose, telle qu’elle se manifeste soit dans le poème en prose soit dans le vers libre. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons interrogé les formes, la prose poétique de ses nouvelles et de son roman, qui répondent partiellement aux critères définissant le poème en prose. Enfin, dans le cadre de la confrontation entre les arts, nous nous sommes intéressés au phénomène textuel Les Lauriers sont coupés, considéré par la critique comme un procédé de « monologue intérieur », puis au rapport entre poésie et musique par l’étude de l’ouvrage Litanies mélopées pour chant et piano, qui met en vis-À-Vis poème et musiqueEdouard Dujardin (1861-1949), the founder of Revue wagnérienne (the Wagnerian Journal) and Revue Indépendante de littérature et d’art (the independent journal of literature and art) has not only been a theoretician on symbolism but also a practitioner. His literary work between 1885 and 1893 explores verse as well as prose and traces back its questionings. Being resolutely engaged in the avant-Garde, it does not only tackle the structure of realism but also questions the model of mimesis in a sort of formal and intense research. It thus happens that Dujardin’s literary work testifies, in an exemplary way for that matter, to the crisis in verse that the literary universe was undergoing. Genres, forms and confrontations of different forms of arts define this course in three parts which does not follow a linear plan nor a chronological one but rather a specific questioning determined by each literary work. This is the reason why we started by studying his drama which raised the question of the character’s identity. The name of Antonia was thus used as a thread to tackle the relationship between prose and verse, as shown in the poem in prose or in free verse.In a second part, we questioned the forms-The poetic prose of his short stories and of his novel- which partly fulfil the criteria of the poem in verse. Lastly, in the context of the confrontation between the different types of arts, we focused on the text viewed as a phenomenon- Les Lauriers sont coupes- considered by critics as a form of “stream of consciousness” then on the connection between poetry and music through the study of the work Litanies, “mélopées” for piano and song, which confronts poem and music

La mise en scène de la Seconde Guerre sino-japonaise représente une question délicate en Chine, puisque cette guerre marque un tournant dans le jeu des puissances politiques à l’intérieur du pays, en contribuant à la prise du pouvoir par le Parti communiste chinois en 1949. L’objet de ce travail porte sur l’étude des films chinois reconstituant l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre sino-japonaise de 1949 à 1966. La compréhension de cette problématique passe d’abord par l’analyse de l’ingérence politique dans le cinéma et la réaction des professionnels. Ensuite, l’étude aborde plus spécifiquement les créations en tant que telles, les messages des films de propagande sur la guerre et les modalités dont le cinéma en fait alors usage. Pour ce faire, deux méthodologies sont appliquées. Dans un premier temps, l’analyse socio-politique s’appuie sur l’exploration des conditions politiques, idéologiques et sociales liées à la production du cinéma chinois (1949-1966). Avec l’introduction de la théorie du discours de Foucault dans l’analyse des textes politiques et des sources premières des articles des professionnels du cinéma, nous apportons des éclaircissements sur l’ordre du discours cinématographique établi dans les « Interventions aux causeries sur la littérature et l’art à Yan’an » rédigées par Mao Zedong. Nous mettons également en lumière la confrontation et le conflit entre le monde du cinéma et les dirigeants du Parti pendant cette période. Dans un second temps, l’analyse de films sert, quant à elle, à appréhender les interprétations et la censure, et à examiner les évolutions des discours cinématographiques. Notre étude s’intéresse au décryptage du film de guerre antijaponais comme produit artistique complexe réunissant l’image, le dialogue et le son, dans l’objectif de dégager les interprétations politiques et culturelles de la mise en scène de la guerre. Nous révélons également les aspects concrets qui caractérisent l’influence et l’entrave politiques sur l’image du corps dans les films de guerre antijaponais et leur évolution sous MaoThe staging of the Second Sino-Japanese War represents a delicate issue in China, since this war marks a turning point in the interplay of political powers within the country, contributing to the seizure of power by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. The subject of this work is the study of Chinese films reconstructing the history of the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1949 to 1966. The understanding of this issue first involves the analysis of political interference in cinema and the reaction of professionals. Then, the study addresses more specifically the creations as such, the messages of propaganda films about war and the ways in which cinema then makes use of war. Two methodologies are applied to achieve this. Firstly, the socio-political analysis focuses on the exploration of the political, ideological and social context related to the production of Chinese cinema (1949-1966). With the introduction of Foucault’s theory of discourse in the analysis of political texts and the primary sources of articles by film professionals, we shed light on the order of cinematic discourse established in the “Talks at the Yan’an Conference on Literature and Art” written by Mao Zedong. We also highlight the confrontation and conflict between the film world and the Party leadership during this period. Secondly, film analysis allows us to understand interpretations and censorship, and to examine the evolution of cinematic discourse. Our study focuses on the decoding of the anti-Japanese war film as a complex artistic product combining image, dialogue and sound, with the aim of uncovering the political and cultural interpretations of the staging of the war. Les années 1880 constituent dans la conscience critique un moment déterminant de l’histoire littéraire. Cette période est marquée par l’émergence du roman d’analyse psychologique (Bourget, Maupassant), censé rivaliser avec le roman de mœurs naturaliste, et par une crise des styles. Une nouvelle langue (Goncourt, Poictevin) tranche avec les revendications classiques où la clarté et la concision continuent d’être promues (Zola et Maupassant). Parallèlement, la psychologie expérimentale (Taine, Ribot, Charcot) et le discours philosophique (Bergson, Schopenhauer) font évoluer les représentations de la conscience. Les nerfs, l’hystérie, les maladies de la volonté, l’inconscient, les renaissances d’images et les myriades d’impressions deviennent les nouveaux objets de ces sciences psychologiques. Un moi désormais clivé et obscur fascine et influence les romanciers. La renaissance de la psychologie (avant Freud) et l’essor d’une stylistique balbutiante (avant Bally) permettent d’appréhender le contexte épistémologique de la fin du siècle. Cette thèse met en relation le discours scientifique, psychologique et critique des années 1880 avec un corpus de six romans qui donnent lieu à des études de style dans la seconde partie : André Cornélis de Paul Bourget, Les lauriers sont coupés d’Édouard Dujardin, Fort comme la mort de Guy de Maupassant, Une page d’amour et La Joie de vivre d’Émile Zola, et Chérie d’Edmond de Goncourt. Les nouvelles psychologies induisent de nouveaux modèles du moi que le roman traduit dans sa propre langue. Cette thèse se propose d’analyser l’ensemble de ces traductions stylistiquesThe 1880’s constitute a determining moment of critical consciousness in the history of literature. This period is marked by the emergence of the psycho-analytical novel (Bourget, Maupassant), to compete with naturalist literature and as a result of a crisis in styles. A new language (Goncourt, Poictevin) breaks with the classic values where clarity and conciseness continue to remain important (Zola and Maupassant). In parallel, experimental psychology (Taine, Ribot, Charcot) and philosophical discourse (Bergson, Schopenhauer) change representations of consciousness. Nerves, hysteria, the unconscious, psychological illness, the renaissance of images and myriad impressions become the new focus of these psychological sciences. The self, from this moment independent and unsettling, both fascinates and influences writers. The renaissance of psychology (before Freud) and the explosive growth of a style in its infancy (before Bally) allow us to understand the epistemological context at the end of the century. This thesis links the scientific, psychological and critical discourse of the 1880s with a corpus of six novels, and develops a study of style in the second part : André Cornélis, Paul Bourget ; Les lauriers sont coupés, Édouard Dujardin ; Fort comme la mort, Guy de Maupassant ; Une page d’amour and La Joie de vivre, Émile Zola, and Chérie, Edmond de Goncourt.
