Abstract:
The Columbia Biological Series (1894–1974) was produced by the Department of Biology (later Zoology) of Columbia University, New York, and spanned a wide range of topics within the biological sciences. This paper provides a bibliography for the twenty-five volumes of this series together with basic details on the launch (1894), re-launch (1937), and history of the series. The series receives attention from historians of biology principally as the source for canonical texts in the synthesis period of evolutionary studies, with publications by Dobzhansky, Mayr, Simpson, and Stebbins. This note provides additional details on the publication history of these volumes. Synthesis historians, myself included, have poorly appreciated how the production of this series fit into efforts to promote Columbia University as a major centre for innovative biological research. We also have poorly understood the relations between these books and the Jesup lecture series, an irregular event sponsored by the department at Columbia. Tracing the series' publication history speaks to both these topics.

Abstract:
In the first half of the 20th century, in most European countries, it was thought that cholinesterase and other drugs that counteract acetylcholine should reduce the manifestations of schizophrenia. In 1937, Fiamberti (1894–1970) introduced the transorbital method of lobotomy which established the use of acetylcholine shock treatment for curing the disturbances of schizophrenia. Accepting the idea that the psychic alterations of schizophrenia were caused by a pathological interruption of nerve conduction at a presumably cortical level, Fiamberti thought he could apply this to the clinical field using the properties of acetylcholine, an acetic ester of choline. Here, we examined, in detail, the contribution of Mario Fiamberti to acetylcholine therapy.

Abstract:
Mechanical engineering is a poorly known facet of the alpine economic way of life within the grenoble area, from 1870 through the 30 s. This dissertation is aimed at contributing a share to a better knowlege of this field. It is focused on the survey of a medium size company, namely the domene- based ateliers ch. Morel corporation, designers and builders of crushers, mills and miscellaneous equipments for cement and lime production and mining applications. As a very extensive literature was available on this matter, it was attempted to review the whole history of this company, thus taking into account as well its technical, financial and economic features as the environ- mental social and political areas of concern. Specific emphasis was placed upon charles morel's (1848-1914) occupational career, a company promoting self-made man, who succeeded in his undertakings owing to his natural talents and developmental capabilities. Technical development has been the keystone of his success. Through quite a variety of patent apli- cations, he contributed an efficient share to the trend towards the drastic change in production processes and facilities that was experienced in the cement producing industry after 1880, thus deriving much benefit from this booming market. Thereafter, the company's internal history and its relationship with the prevailing economic environment is exhaustively reviewed, i. E. From its establisment in 1894 throughout 1935, when it filed up a petition in bankruptcy. Our informational sources allowed us to go up to the core of this family business, not only for the purpose of surveying its institutional practices management procedures and production processes, but also with a view of assessing its economic performance and achievements and its weaknesses and shortcomings. We tried to find out the reasons on which the company's decision makers based in developing their strategies and selecting their way, along with their effects on the company's subsequent evolutionary trends. As a final step, the causative factors from which the company's failure or were searched out, whist placing specific emphasis on the prevailing effect of the merely endogenous causes

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on the links between destruction, knowledge and creation in all of Céline's writings (novels, lampoons, early writings, letters), in which knowledge is often depicted as the expression of an elusive and brutal truth so-called scholars are unable to find. It is easier to understand the evolution of this absolute desire to know, expressed by Céline very early on, and to examine his literary innovations when we compare his books to several texts, sometimes little-known, that he was a great reader of : the review Le Correspondant that he used to read during his stay in Africa, the articles of the director Charles Dullin when he was writing Journey to the End of the Night, the books of the art historian Élie Faure in the 1930s, and, after World War II, texts that are typical of the Belle-Époque, such as old issues of the Revue des Deux Mondes or the works of the philosopher Théodule Ribot. The comparison between Céline's writings and these very diverse sources shows where Céline discovers and how he appropriates, transforms or reverses many of the ideas he uses in his books, in which he often tries to make a literary weapon out of this one-of-a-kind knowledge he claims to possess

Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to questions of reception and institutionalization of documentary photography and reportage photography from 1937 through to the 1970s at the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The first chapter looks at the development and objectives of the advent of straight photography as a canon or an aestheticizing tradition of the medium, and sheds light on the influence of formalist criticism in the emergence of a form of documentary modernism, exemplified by the works of Walker Evans. Many photographers whose practices do not correspond to the ideals of technical perfection of straight photography were excluded from the circuits of institutional legitimization, particularly the members of the New York Photo League, Urban documentary photography, developed outside of the modernist doxa will be the subject of the second chapter of this study. In this respect, particular attention is paid to the critical work of Elizabeth McCausland, a major spokesperson for the social function of photography. The third chapter focuses on the post-war period. ln this new context. The Americans were looking for new artistic canons, which they found in French reportage photography, with Henri Cartier-Bresson leading the fray. Finally, this chapter reveals the diplomatic interests of modernism in Transatlantic exchanges with France, as well as its economic interests, taking André Kertész, as an example, whose exhibition at MoMA caused his works to suddenly rise in value on the inchoate photography market of the 1970s

Abstract:
This thesis is a corpus centred round jules verne's voyages extraordinaires and its coherence is meant to be psychothematic : travelling is seen as an exploration of death, and writing as an imaginary journey. Thus, travelling is not merely a dream of exhausting what a map of the world may offer, but also a dream of utopias : the utopias of the extraneous, of love, of the future, of a harmony between nature and society - such utopias are forced into the para- doxical exorcism which the various counter-utopias have formed: a moral evil explored by detective of fantastic narratives, a political evil seen as a repre- hension of desires and as the oppression inflicted by history- meanwhile science-fiction tries to see through a hazardous future. Hence our preference for the various aspects of the literature of limits, which, aware that the world is only our weltanschaaumg, is quite heedless of the rules of a reducing pseudo-realism. Therefore, the wonderful, the fantastic, science-fiction, utopias and counter-utopias, poetry and the exploration of death are as many ways of expressing not the preposterousness but the infinite significance of the world. Let transcendency begin with writing, such was, perhaps, our clew, from the first to the last of these texts

Ong, Kong Hui, and 王光輝. "Fundraising and Patriotism of Chinese Australian through Australian Chinese Newspaper (1894-1937)." Thesis, 2018. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/jb69f4.

Abstract:
106
Overseas Chinese fundraising during the first half of 20th century is an important content of overseas Chinese’s patriotism. Funds raised during these periods not only aided Chinese who suffered from natural disasters; improved health, education, and other infrastructure of homeland China, it also supported Sun Yat-sen’s 1911 revolution in overthrowing the Qing regime to build a republic nation. During the mid 19th century, gold was discovered in Australia and it attracted Chinese from Canton province to try their fortunes in the country and later settled down and formed their own community. In 1894, Australian Chinese established their own newspaper and two years later, a list of donors for the flood relief in Guangxi province was printed in the newspaper, which marked the beginning of recorded fundraising history of Australian Chinese. The aim of this paper is to sort out the published donations of Australian Chinese throughout the first half of 20th century and analyses the social structure and patriotism of Australian Chinese through the patterns and habits of their donations.

Abstract:
A research gathering the inventory of public sculptures found in the Algarve dating from the 20th and 21st centuries, up to the end of 2009. The concept of public sculpture is analysed through the changes the visual arts have undergone over time. In a generalized approach, it follows that philosophy and aesthetics, which were the foundations of the works prevailing throughout Europe as well as in the rest of the country, showed up late in the sculptures found in the Algarve. Some of the great Portuguese artists of the nineteenth century are represented by public sculptures from the beginning of the twentieth century. The public sculptures up to beginning of the seventies have the hallmark of the Estado Novo and falls under the aegis of the Política do Espírito. Still during this political period, one particular sculpture was erected which broke with the traditional form of public art. Following the political revolution on April 25, throughout the seventies and the eighties, the new political opening allowed the diversification on the themes addressed and the excessive triumphalism placed on monuments gave way to all sorts of topics affecting the daily lives of populations. During the nineties there was a burst as far as creativity is concerned and the region moves towards the production of a huge quantity of sculptures, initiating a period in which new materials and techniques were used to develop the ideas. The three-dimensional works hitherto exclusively produced by Portuguese artists has the contribution of foreign sculptors. In nine years of the 21st century alone, there was a far higher number of works erected in the Algarve than in the two previous centuries put together. Several symposia on sculpture took place promoting meetings gathering artists from around the world leading to the conception and production of works of art

Abstract:
William Gerald Beasley (1919–2006), a Fellow of the British Academy, was the pioneer in introducing Japanese history into British academic circles as teacher, researcher, and author. He was born in Hanwell, Middlesex on December 22, 1919, and moved to Brackley, Northamptonshire, where he was educated at Magdalen College School. In 1937, Beasley registered for a degree in history at University College London. In the last weeks of World War II, he was in the Pacific Islands interrogating Japanese naval prisoners who were few in number and ‘never seemed to possess important information’. Late in June 1945, Beasley was ordered to join the flagship of the British Pacific Fleet, the HMS King George V, so as to be ‘available for duty in Japan, if needed’. In 1947, he began to teach at the School of Oriental and African Studies, which was the beneficiary of financial help under the recommendations of the Scarbrough Commission. In his great book Japanese Imperialism, 1894–1945 (Oxford, 1987), Beasley re-examined the nature of Japan's imperialism.

Kreft, Gerald. "‘Dedicated to Represent the True Spirit of the German Nation in the World’: Philipp Schwartz (1894–1977), Founder of the Notgemeinschaft." In In Defence of Learning. British Academy, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.5871/bacad/9780197264812.003.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the importance of Philipp Schwartz's role in the establishment of the Notgemeinschaft outside Germany, his remarkable success in placing thirty refugee scholars in the new University of Istanbul within a few months in 1933 (and, over the next twenty years, in recruiting some 250 ‘first-rate scientists (émigrés) for the Turkish Government’), and the close ties established with the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL) by his successor, Dr Fritz Demuth. Between 1936 and 1946, the Notgemeinschaft actually shared the SPSL's accommodation, and provided an invaluable database of refugee academics to the Society and to the American Emergency Committee. In 1937 Demuth was recognized as advisor to, and honorary member of, the SPSL Executive Committee.
