Abstract Living elephants are characterized by the presence of greatly elongated, ever-growing tusks in the upper jaws; these modified incisors may attain a length of up to 345 cm (11. 5 ft) in male Loxodonta africana (Sikes 1971). Following Andrews’ (1906) comparison of 1e large tusks of Miocene through Recent proboscideans with the moderately enlarged second incisors (12) in both jaws of the Eocene genus Moeritherium, most authors have accepted his proposed homologies of the tusks as specialized I2 in all fossil and extant proboscideans (e.g. Matsumoto 1923; Osborn 1936; Sikes 1971). The occurrence of hypertrophied 12 as a shared, derived attribute for all proboscideans was adopted recently by Mahboubi et al. (1986) in their analysis of the affinities of the Eocene genus Numidotherium from Algeria. Most authors have also considered the small, transitory incisor that occurs during the fetal and early postnatal period in extant elephants to be the deciduous predecessor (dI)of the permanent tusks in the upper jaw (Corse 1799; Rose 1894; Schaub 1948; Sikes 1971).

Abstract The Swiss mathematician Paul Finsler (1894-1970) is best known for his work in differential geometry. In his doctoral dissertation, written at Göttingen in 1918 under the direction of Constantin Caratheodory, he generalized the notion of Riemannian manifold to what are now called Finsler spaces. In 1922 he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Cologne, and five years later he became an associate professor for applied mathematics at the University of Zürich, where he remained for the rest of his academic career. Besides geometry, he also published papers in number theory, probability theory and set theory; a bibliography is given in Gross 1971.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the decline of milk from a heavenly elixir to a tradeable food. Early cultures regarded milk not as a simple nutrient, but a living fluid. Heroes and gods were believed to have been nurtured by animals after being abandoned. Character traits were assumed to be transmitted by milk, infantile diseases were attributed to ‘bad milk’, whereas ‘good milk’ was used as a remedy. With chemical methods developed at the end of the 18th century, it became known that human milk was higher in sugar and lower in protein than cow’s milk. During the 19th century, ‘scientific’ feeding emerged which meant modifying cow’s milk to imitate the proportion of nutrients in human milk. In Paris from 1894, Budin sterilized bottled infant milk. In Berlin in 1898, Rubner measured oxygen and energy uptake by calorimetry. These activities ignored the emotional dimension of infant nutrition and the anti-infective properties of human milk and may have enhanced the decline in breastfeeding, which reached an all-time low in 1971. Milk’s demystification made artificial nutrition safer, but paved the way for commercially produced infant formula.
