Abstract:
One hundred sixty eight taxa of the genus Agrilus (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) mostly from the Palearctic and Oriental regions are studied and their taxonomic, nomenclatural, distributional or biological data are updated. The following new taxonomic or nomenclatural acts are proposed. The status of four taxa is changed: Agrilus grandiceps hemiphanes Marseul, 1866 is changed from subspecies to species Agrilus hemiphanes stat. nov.; Agrilus lopatini Alexeev, 1964 is changed from species to subspecies Agrilus araxenus lopatini stat. nov.; the specific name hermineus Abeille de Perrin, 1907 is removed from the synonymy of A. lineola as a name of subspecies Agrilus lineola hermineus revalidated name, stat. nov.; Agrilus validiusculus Semenov, 1891 is changed from species to subspecies Agrilus transversesulcatus validiusculus stat. nov.. Abstract:
Phylogenetic analyses of the Cambrian spiny oryctocephalids support the elevation to familiar rank of Oryctocephalidae Beecher, 1897 and indicate that the family can be divided into two clades, here designated as the subfamilies Oryctocephalinae Beecher, 1897 and Lancastriinae Kobayashi, 1935. Curvoryctocephaliinae Zhao and YuaninYuan et al., 2002 is considered here a junior synonym of Lancastriinae. Oryctocephalinae have tapered or parallel sided glabella and is composed of species ofOryctocephalusWalcott, 1886. The subgeneraOryctocephalus(Oryctocephalus) andO. (Eoryctocephalus) Zhao and YuaninYuan et al., 2002 do not form separate clades and are here rejected. The genera of the Lancastriinae have expanding glabellae. The subfamily is composed of a broad variety of genera that can be divided into three major subclades:Lancastria,Protoryctocephalus, andOryctocephalites. TheLancastriasubclade is composed ofLancastriaKobayashi, 1935,ChangaspisLeeinChien, 1961, andGoldfieldiaPalmer, 1964 occurring at the base of the Lancastriinae.GoldfieldiaandLancastriaform a sister group toChangaspis. The long branches in the phylograms indicated significant differences between these taxa; thus, the genusGoldfieldiais maintained. TheProtoryctocephalussubclade is monogeneric and forms a sister group to theOryctocephalitessubclade. TheOryctocephalitessubclade consists of several species of this genus and the more derived formsMetabalangiaQian and YuaninZhang et al., 1980 andTonkinellaMansuy, 1916.OryctocephaloidesYuaninZhang et al., 1980 is considered a junior synonym ofOryctocephalitesResser, 1939. The subgeneraOryctocephalites(Oryctocephalites) andO. (Parachangaspis) Zhao and YuaninYuan et al., 2002 do not form separate clades. The later subgenus occurs in the basal portion of theOryctocephalitessubclade indicating that it is a paraphyletic taxon.OpsiosoryctocephalusSundberg, 1994,OryctocephalopsLermontova, 1940, andCurvoryctocephalusZhao and YuaninYuan et al., 2002 are not consistent in their placement within the phylogenetic analyses, although they always occur in the Lancastriinae. As a result they are not placed within a subclade within Lancastriinae. The type speciesGoldfieldia pacificaPalmer, 1964 was based solely on cranidia. This species is redescribed using topotype material that includes cranidia, librigenae, hypostomes, thorax, and pygidia.

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the monumental mosaics, large stained glass windows, and illustrated maps that the German painter Werner Peiner (1897–1984), now best known for his designs for the representative buildings of Hitler’s dictatorship, produced between 1931 and 1935 for Shell Oil and its German subsidiary. The discussion of these commissions, which emerged from Peiner’s social networks of the 1920s and contributed to his career as a state artist after 1933, explains their function as ideological images promoting the interests of a global corporation and affirming modern automotive technology using conservative, mythologizing tropes of paradisical nature, traditional cultural landscapes, and immutable national communities that the painter later employed in his work for Hitler’s state.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This thesis of urbanism studies the entering of modernity in the city, through the examples of planned capitals in brazil: belo horizonte (1897), goiania (1935), boa vista (1945), brasilia (1960) and palmas (1990). Each city urban plans are analysed and refered to the history of brazilian urban space as well as socio-political movements at the period. The government itself tries to modernise society and to build its own space - the construction of capitals is only one side of this process. Those towns however show us a different reality from the initial projects, transformed by such elements as the imaginary, economic stakes, migration of population, speculations. . . The period studied (1500-1997) reveales the metamorphosis of the notion of modernity. The urban projects are analysed as the progression from the west, which began in the xvith century. The occupation and economic development of the territory is designed on an international level by the peripheral position of brazil (the third world), and on an internal level by the birth (and expansion) of an industrial market in the south-east region of the country. But those cities also represent a continued quest for a national identity. Unification is problematic in brazil, a mixed and contrasted country. The imaginary syncretismes would be numerous, influenced as much by the progress ideology as by the utopia of an egalitarian society or of a new terrestrial paradise. Town planners and politicians recommend the policy of "the complete blank", the suppression of memory, the cosmogony of a new urban space, and a new architecture, society, population, economy. . . Therefore the reference is often the prexisting capital; the projects find themselves dialectically linked to the ancient cities. The new brazilian capitals, art works or products? like a sort of phoenix, could modernity rise from the ashes of brazilian history? or is the desire for historical rupture a brazilian tradition?

Abstract:
In this doctoral dissertation, we are studying a selection of both Mexican and French literary works related to the historic events of the Second French Intervention in Mexico (1862-1867) and of the Second Mexican Empire (1864-1867). This body of works has been published between the XIXth and the XXIth century and has been selected, both because their poetic and political thoughts are emblematic of this period and because they have contributed to the construction of a Mexican cultural and identity iconography. We have decided to select the fiction and theatrical genres, to carry out a comparative and diachronic analysis. The decision of which literary works and authors to include has been made based on how both the French Intervention and the way it has been depicted in literature, have been dealt with in particular in each literary work and each author we considered to studied. The studied novels belong to the sub-genre of serialized fiction in the XIXth century with, on the French side, Benito Vázquez (1869) by Lucien Biart and Doña Flor (1877) by Gustave Aimard and, on the Mexican side, Clemencia (1869) by Manuel Altamirano and El Cerro de las Campanas (1868) by Juan Mateos. As far as theatre plays are concerned, we have carried out a comparative study of both Corona de Sombra (1943) by Rodolfo Usigli and Charlotte et Maximilien (1945) by Maurice Rostand. We have completed our analysis with a complementary study of El Tuerto es Rey (1970) by Carlos Fuentes. Regarding more contemporaneous historic and literary creations, we chose to include Noticias del Imperio (1987) by Fernando del Paso and Yo, el francés by Jean Meyer (2002). This corpus allows to carry out a comparative, linguistic, semiotic and literary analysis of afore-mentioned works. Such analysis calls for a thorough reflection on the interpretation of conflict, an armed and political conflict which influenced both History and Mexican and French literary productions

Abstract:

Abstract:
Independence meant the new republic of Cuba had a unique opportunity and responsibility to make public health a matter of the highest state concern. These early debates in the earliest months of the Cuban Republic reveal an ambitious and far-reaching political project to join science and statecraft and secure health as a fundamental right of citizenship. This book explains how ideas about government and personal responsibility for health emerged during the transition from colony to republic, shaped the development of new health institutions and the lives of Havana’s residents, and were contested, transformed, and taken up by ever-broader swaths of the urban population to make claims about citizenship and state responsibility. It examines the post-colonial history of Havana as urban residents confronted disease and early death during a period of dizzying political, economic, and scientific change from 1897-1935. It contends that, over time, the growing interactions between the urban poor and the agents of the expanding public health state were transformative for both. The introduction provides a brief history of medical nationalism in postcolonial Cuba, the changes and medical landscape in Havana, and expanding collective rights in Latin America. It also provides a summary of the structure of the book.

Abstract:
The interaction between mathematicians and mathematical logicians has always been much slighter than one might imagine. This chapter examines the case of Turing’s mentor, Maxwell Hermann Alexander Newman (1897–1984). The young Turing attended a course of lectures on logical matters that Newman gave at Cambridge University in 1935. After briefly discussing examples of the very limited contact between mathematicians and logicians in the period 1850–1930, I describe the rather surprising origins and development of Newman’s own interest in logic. One might expect that the importance to many mathematicians of means of proving theorems, and their desire in many contexts to improve the level of rigour of proofs, would motivate them to examine and refine the logic that they were using. However, inattention to logic has long been common among mathematicians. A very important source of the cleft between mathematics and logic during the 19th century was the founding, from the late 1810s onwards, of the ‘mathematical analysis’ of real variables, grounded on a theory of limits, by the French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy. He and his followers extolled rigour—most especially, careful definitions of major concepts and detailed proofs of theorems. From the 1850s onwards, this project was enriched by the German mathematician Karl Weierstrass and his many followers, who introduced (for example) multiple limit theory, definitions of irrational numbers, and an increasing use of symbols, and then from the early 1870s by Georg Cantor with his set theory. However, absent from all these developments was explicit attention to any kind of logic. This silence continued among the many set theorists who participated in the inauguration of measure theory, functional analysis, and integral equations. The mathematicians Artur Schoenflies and Felix Hausdorff were particularly hostile to logic, targeting the famous 20th-century logician Bertrand Russell. (Even the extensive dispute over the axiom of choice focused mostly on its legitimacy as an assumption in set theory and its use of higher-order quantification: its ability to state an infinitude of independent choices within finitary logic constituted a special difficulty for ‘logicists’ such as Russell.) Russell, George Boole, and other creators of symbolic logics were exceptional among mathematicians in attending to logic, but they made little impact on their colleagues.

Chapter 4 discusses Iryŏp’s encounter with Buddhism, which took place around 1927, and Iryŏp’s journey from activism to a leading Buddhist thinker. During this period, Iryŏp met two people in particular who either motivated her to become interested in Buddhism or who helped her to study Buddhism. The first person was Paek Sŏnguk (1897–1981), the president of the Buddhist Newspaper Company; the other was Ha Yunsil, a non-celibate monk who was also involved with the journal Buddhism. She became romantically involved with Paek and married Ha Yunsil. The chapter also includes a brief discussion of hwadu mediation that Iryŏp practice as a Zen Buddhist nun.
