Abstract:
This thesis examines the participation of Armenians in the shari'a courts of the Ottoman Empire from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Scholars have traditionally thought that Armenians in the Ottoman Empire resolved their disputes within their own communities' legal systems. However, new studies of Ottoman court records reveal that Armenians in the Ottoman Empire frequently used the shari'a courts to resolve a wide variety of disputes. There are several possible reasons to account for this frequent shari'a court use by a community that theoretically had its own courts. The first is that the Arm

This dissertation analyzed the flourishing of imitative versions of Heloise and Abelard's love correspondence in France in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Current theoretical approaches on epistolarity, narratology, cultural and gender studies were applied to focus on the various transformations (rewriting, veiling, fragmenting) of Heloise's epistles as they fell into the hands of (mostly male) imitators. Close textual analysis was used to investigate how the multiple (re)visions of her epistolary discourse and persona over two hundred years may be indicative of, and have helped cons

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Karoo history has received relatively little archaeological attention. This is despite the fact that the area underwent a major economic transformation in the nineteenth century. The pastoralists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century Roggeveld predominantly practiced small-scale subsistence farming. This changed rapidly with the introduction of merino wool sheep in the region in the mid 1800s. The region went from small-scale subsistence pastoralism to commercial and global scale Merino wool production, which fully integrated the Roggeveld into the ec

The gender distinction between plural adjectival paradigms of обоихъ–обѣихъ is traced back to the 18th century Russian grammars: V. E. Adodurov’s, M. V. Lomonosov’s, A. A. Barsov’s. The data of the Russian Nation-al Corpus show the interchangeability of the forms of обоихъ – обѣихъin the 18th century texts. Differentiation by gender in the Russian plural paradigms was transferred rom the Church Slavonic dual paradigms of обою – обѣю. The metalinguistic construct of grammars of the 18th centuries is preserved in the normative grammars of the mod-ern Russian language, despite the fact that the g

Abstract:
The most valuable musical instruments in the world are 17-18th century violins from Cremona, Italy (made by Stradivari and Guarneri), and Chinese guqins (7-string zithers) from the 8-13th century. Today, musicians still prefer these antique instruments for their superior acoustic qualities that cannot be reproduced by later makers. Over the centuries, many theories have been proposed to explain the unique playing properties of famous violins and guqins, but most are based on conjectures rather than factual evidence.
