Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of History of Science and Ideas, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-113802.

Full textThis study, concerned with the thinking of Bataille and Nietzsche on the subject of what we will describe for now as the philosophy of the limit, is made up of five chapters : first chapter. The demand for the absence of work second chapter. The project of the limit third chapter. The transgression game forth chapter. The communication by and through appearance fifth chapter. The beginning of parody and tragedy the philosophy of the limit is characterized by the free assertion it carries within itself of its own ultimate consequences. Our intent is to study the meaning and extent of this assertion using as our starting point the general principle that introduces with one stroke the problems of "the will of chance", "the inversion of all values", "the eternal return of the same": the limit is a term that is not a term

Full textThis research focuses on women teachers (in secular primary schools) in a specific historical and political context : that of colonial Algeria. Numerous official sources and historical research have priviliged the problematic linked to the role and impact of colonial schooling, yet few took interest in the teaching staff. This work therefore has two objectives. On the one hand, present the specific experiences of secular women teachers, by tracing some aspects of their lives - private as well as professional, and by, notably, drawing from their own testimonies. It is also about analyzing the roles they might have played in colonial and acculturation processes, as european women and as teachers. The dates we selected (1874-1949) are significant at various level : at the level of the development of colonization, at the level of the history of secular education and at the level of women's history

Full textWilliam Faulkner and Julien Green, yet they wrote in two different languages, possess a work that presents many similarities. Above all, the comparative study of these two authors is the occasion of questioning the notion of tragedy. As a matter of fact, their novels show all the symptoms of the tragic kind. The purpose of our thesis is to cast a new light on the interwar years’novels, scanning the characteristics of tragedy, as it appears in the present corpus. Thus, greenian and faulknerian novels set a compound literary system, which takes part to the philosophical, social, religious questionings of their time
Full textIn this dissertation, we seek to demonstrate that the history of music in Algiers from the 1860s to independence must be apprehended in terms of meeting and transfers between European and indigenous musical expressions. Characterized by live performance and being a point of contact, musical practice has been understood, as early as the beginning of the 20th century, as a means to create and tighten ties between communities; a purpose to which many actors of civil society have worked, increasingly supported by public authorities. Rubbed together, the different musical genres were modelled and consolidated, so that the Algiers’s so-called “Andalusian” musical tradition was, in fact, shaped by the dialogue between Europeans and indigenes. Thus, from 1862 to 1962, one can speak of Algerian music’s “franco-muslim” path; a path which reveals that the historical significance of Algerian independence in the field of music is as limited as its memorial weight is overwhelming in contemporary nationalist narratives on Algerian music. However, the Algiers musical case might be more telling from a cultural history of modern France point of view: it shows – surprisingly? – that in France, multiculturalism is not tied to imperialism. If one considers for a moment that Algiers, from 1862 to 1962, is not fundamentally “colonial”, admits that it has for a time shared a common destiny with the hexagone, and yields to the fact that it hosted a genuine cultural policy aimed at the promotion of diversity, one is led to wonder if Jacobinism, as is often said, is consubstantial to France
Bandeira, de Melo Carolina. "Légitimation, application et formation : les missions scientifiques françaises au Brésil dans le domaine de la psychologie (1908-1947)." Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0139.
Full textThis research focuses on the French missions in Brazil in the field of psychology from 1908 to 1947. The study allowed the establishment of a timeline that separates these missions into three distinct periods. First, the study tackles the legitimacy of the discipline as a scientific discourse originated from experimental researches capable of incorporating facts deemed proven in the realm of the intelligible, using the lessons gleaned from the lectures of Georges Dumas (who went there the first time in 1908) and Pierre Janet (who went there in 1922 and in 1933). Then it identifies the application of psychology in Brazil's development project, most especially in the administration of intelligence tests in the structure of public educational System and in the industry, techniques elucidated in the lectures of Henri Piéron (in 1923, 1926 and 1947), Theodore Simon (1929) and Henri Wallon (in 1935). Finally, this research discusses how psychology training firmly took its roots in higher education in the new universities of the country with the mission of Jean Maugüé who taught at the University of São Paulo from 1935 to 1944, and André Ombredane who stayed at the University of Brazil (in Rio de Janeiro) from 1939 to 1945. This thesis also shows that scientific relationships are the result of a murual will and that they have far exceeded the academic sphere. Brazil has acquired support for its modernization and a partner to open Europe's doors and to help the country improve its image abroad, whereas France, in turn, sends to its partner its associate its most prestigious researchers, in order to expand its scientific, cultural, economie and diplomatie influences

Full textThis thesis based on numerous previously unseen Algerian and French archives deals with the fight of the Algerian immigrants living in mainland France for the independence of their country from 1954 to 1962. The first part goes back to the establishment, the development and the methods of action of the various nationalist organisations that followed each other between 1926 and 1954, thus enabling us to gain a better understanding of the origins of the French Federation of the FLN. In the second part, this study means to historicise the French Federation of the FLN in order to understand its political and military strategy and therefore to analyse its links with the leading members of the FLN , its establishment, its organisational methods. It will analyse the conflict that opposed the French Federation to its rival the French Federation of the Algerian National Movement. In the third part will be question of the brutalisation of the Algerian immigrants by the French Federation of the FLN and by the French police forces

Full textThis thesis studies the trajectory of two Latin American women: Antonieta Rivas Mercado (1900 1931) and Patrícia Galvão (1910 1962). They were women with multiple faces, marked by social, political, and ideological differences. They had been considered transgressors of the prevailing social and cultural rules. They crossed borders showing other possibilities to acting in the public scenario, and participating actively in the artistic and political movements, which would propose changes. The privileged sources for this investigation were the writings of self (letters, autobiography and personal diaries). They built images of themselves reflecting and giving opinions about issues related to tensions involving difficulties to conciliate private life (motherhood, marriage, divorce, tradition) and public acting with the public actuation (in the cultural and political scope). As women living on a time of changes, they took over in distinct levels, in a subtle or declared way, that motherhood was not the only or the most important project in their lives.

Full textOn June 6, 1944, 177 men commanded by Philippe Kieffer take up in Normandy in the UK sector Sword. The "Kieffer Commando" is this day the only French unit engaged in the landing ground of Overlord. Condemned to be in the collective memory as the "French D-Day," Kieffer's men saw their history and memory of their work widely amputees, forgotten or distorted since summer 1944. The objective of this thesis is primarily to restore the true history of the Kieffer Commando, since the formation of the unit in 1942 until its dissolution in July 1945 by returning to those times before and losers in the after June 6: the raids started in 1942 and 1943, and the campaigns of Holland and Germany during the fall of 1944 and the first months of 1945, the use of the free French unit in the general strategy of the Allies between 1942 and 1945, constituting the core of this work. Much is then made to the personality of the chef, Philippe Kieffer, but especially to his 176 men who accompany him on June 6, through a study to outline the contours of these sociological sailors of the Free France engaged in the British Army. A final section then looks at the different representations of the "Kieffer Commando" and the role played during the war, thus measuring its proper place in our collective memories, that of France such as the Free French Navy from 1944 to May 2008, date of creation of a new "Kieffer Commando"

Full textWe first question the possibility for the speech to express despite the day-to-day existence which flattens the meaning and despite the perception of a fleeing integrity which lets it into pieces face the scene of the world as the deep alterity of whom is listening. Then, walking with Camus, Nietzsche and Bataille, we will understand the thinking as an experience that has to break boundaries up to the inextinguishable exteriority of Being. Helped by the concepts of the Night (Hegel and Bataille), of the Neuter (Blanchot) or of the Nothing (Heidegger), we will from there interrogate the possibility left for the thought to build itself out of a frame of relations from the otherness. The thought broken up in as by its self-otherness faces its own ob-scene. Islets of meanings, speaking more in what stays unsaid or by reverberations the thought finds in the poetic diction, as approched by heidegger and Blanchot, the only speech qualified to think and deliver the essential seclusion of the act of thinking. Though this parole lets it straddling the fence of what is unutterable, of the absence, of the meaning keept unsaid as the irreducible gap between being and existing

Full textIn the 1920s and 1930s, the Scandinavian literary canon seems to be written outside the borders of the North. Many writers that we acknowledge today as classic authors such as Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), Eyvind Johnson, Harry Martinson and Aksel Sandemose leave the Scandinavian peninsula and narrate the new horizons. What does that kind of relocation of the Scandinavian literary scene mean and imply? How can we link the notion of space to literary writing? How are the landscapes depicted? What kind of identities emerges from this perspective? This work takes focus on four novels and aims to understand the mechanism of the Nordic literary emigration that occurred in Denmark, Sweden and Norway in the beginning of the 20th century. It is not an artistic movement nor a school, but a tendency for Scandinavian writers to take an “Out of Scandinavia” point of view, in order to shape the identity of Nordic literature on the brink of modernity

Canas, Anabela. "A apetência estética pelo abismo." Master's thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/3147.
Full textThe theme of this work focuses on the idea of the abyss, distinguishing two aspects: pit as a symbol of abyss / sky as a symbol of abyss. But being the abyss itself a symbolic reading deep inside the man and, recognizing in man a need of transcendence in which he sometimes represents himself as immense, possibilities of speculation are created about another symbolic result - Being as a symbol of the abyss. Hence, it emerges the apparent permutability and reciprocity of these symbols. Exploring the symbols pit and sky, which, although imbued with a similar character of immensity in depth and height, they give the appearance of an existing opposition extendable to pairs of categories such as: inside / outside, light / darkness, and others, perceived and conceptualized as opposites, but which sometimes provide similar phenomena, we sought to demonstrate, in terms of visual perception and phenomenological speculation, the relationship with the vertiginous restlessness. We sought to substantiate an idea of abyss that represents both the appetence and the fear of self-knowledge, and from this, the validity of the forms (shapes) while symbolic representations of the being – present in the contemplation of the abyss – or of the abyss as a projection or a symbol of this one, and to speculate about the paths which were defined since the structuring of the material imagination until the acquisition of shapes and the establishment of the symbols used in the evocation of the abyss. In this paper, they were developed two parallel components: the plastic realization and the written reflection. Both arose from a speculation which found argumentative tools and resources while searching some approaches to the subject or related concepts, made by referential authors, which allow to contextualize it in some of the dimensions that have been already studied, to support the idea of abyss to be developed and to extend the formal or symbolic readings, necessary for the plastic development of the theme, helping to redefine the path, or clarifying some of the initial intuitions, and in return, to guide future researches.
