Full textThis study brings an analysis of the fabrication and use of the past as one of the strategies of domain of the Escóssia and Rosado families in Mossoró from 1902 to 2002. The investigation was conducted by innumerable sources, among which the press, especially the O Mossoroense newspaper, stood out, because it was in its pages that the city\'s past was being built from the selection of two events: September 30th of 1883 (date when the city abolished local slavery) and June 13th, 1927 (when the city resisted the attack of the gang of cangaceiros led by Lampião). The objective was to comprehend the incorporation of these events into the municipal civic calendar and its transformation into public celebrations, which took as reference the narratives presented in the newspapers, cordéis (folk literature), photographs and works of the scholars of the city that were connected to the publisher Coleção Mossoroense. Through this documentation, it was tried to understand how the narratives on the past of people from Mossoró, present in the celebrations, correspond to a framework of essential memory, especially, to the agency and placement of the political image of the Escóssia and Rosado families as builders of the past of the city.

Full textFrom the XIX century onwards, a large sector of the Dominican intelligentsia has developed a pro-hispanie discourse with regard to the ethnie-racial formation of the Dominican people that has established a dichotomy between the black African elements and national identity. This discourse was strengthened during Rafael Leonidas Trujillo dictatorship. The two most important intellectuals of this period were: Manuel Arturo Pefia Batlle and Joaquin Balaguer. Although if they came from different political and philosophical spheres, they were drawn together by their strong convictions on the alleged threat embodied by Haitian immigrants and the urgency of developing national projects that would vindicate the roi of the Spanish roots in the formation of the national identity. This study focuses on the nationalist ideology making during Trujillo dictatorship and the part played bv Pefia Batlle and Joaquin Balaguer in its conception

Full textThis research includes Leni Riefenstahl’s six photographic books published from 1973 until 2002. Two books contain underwater-photographs, the four others contain pictures « Hitler’s film maker » made in Africa, especially in the Nuba mountains in southern Sudan. The method chosen, founded on Roland Barthes’ chronicle Leni of 1978 aims at underlining the probable relation between Leni Riefenstahl’s photographs and different artistic, biological and philosophical streams. Many of these photographs can be considered as an illustration of Spengler’s, Frobenius’, Hentschel’s, Nietzsche’s, or Klages’ vitalism. Links with the German nudist movement are also possible. The hypothesis Leni Riefenstahl belonged to a network composed of Irenäus Eibl-Eibesfeldt, Hans Hass, Georg Scheer, Wolfgang Klausewitz should be taken into account. The question of the links of these four authors with Konrad Lorenz is not an easy question. He defended the shallow ecology. It’s not sure that Leni Riefenstahl’s photographic books are not rather connected to the deep ecology

The Society of Jesus was one of the most important institution involved in the teaching and practice of mathematics and astronomy in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and East Asia.In Portugal, from 1540 to 1759,the Jesuits developed and maintained a vast network of colleges and were responsible for the education of around 20000 pre-university students. With the expulsion of the Orderby the Marquis de Pombal,in 1759,the Jesuit colleges were closed and the educational system was dismantled. The secularization of the educational system was accompanied by a massive political campaign in which the Jesuits were considered the major obstacle to scientific progress. This accusation of obscurantism and scientific illiteracy was largely accepted in Portugal in the 18th century and persisted throughout the 19th century. When the Jesuits returned to Portugal,in the 1850s,in order to recover their scientific and social credibility, they made scientific education and research a priority.Among their initiatives, they founded the colleges of Campolide (Lisboa,1858) and São Fiel (Louriçal do Campo,1863),two of the most important secondary schools in Portugal that made relevant efforts in the teaching of science, and established Brotéria,a scientific journal with original research papers.Considered one of,the most significant learned journals printed in Portugalin the 20th century,it published 400 popularization articles and more than 1300 research papers on zoology, botany, biochemistry and molecular genetics.By analyzing the scientific and pedagogical activities of the Portuguese Jesuits in the 19th and 20th century,I expect to shed some light into the outer tensions and the inner desires that led a religious order to deeply engage in scientific practices in order to recover its social and scientific credibility.
