_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The aim of this paper is to articulate the understanding of the metaphysical sense that Levinas gives to ethics, by recognizing what he inherited from the thinking of Heideggerian ontology, as well as his move towards Kantian ethics in the attempt to overcome what he calls the Heideggerian “mood”. We have surveyed the discussion about how the death of the other is the point at which we give back the ethical character to meaning, beyond the finitude of “my” death as the ontological moment of the existentiality of “dasein”, in the notion of the infinite in the face of the other. At the end of this reflection, we arrive at the consideration of the birth of ethics with the arrival of a “third”, in which justice breaks with the violence of the love from which it stems. Our objective was to recognize human meaning as founded on alterity as that which make human experience and contextualization possible.

Abstract:
How can we explain the fact that the Zionist experience in Palestine did not conclude in chaos? From its foundation on May 14, 1948, what prevented the young Israeli democracy from dissolving despite opposing factors such as wars, mass immigration beyond calculation and economic crises? To answer these questions and to understand the achievements of the Zionist revolution, one must move beyond the traditional explanatory frameworks of nationalism, liberalism or socialism. Starting with the Mapai victory (under the leadership of David Ben-Gurion) at the elections for the eighteenth Zionist Congress of 1933, Labour Zionism became the leading ideology within the Zionist movement. Over time, the cultural and political influence of Labour Zionism succeeded to influence the Yishuv, which has lead to a unique historical phenomenon: for the first time, a movement claiming to be part of socialism created a sovereign state; it laid the foundations of a democratic entity; and shaped the set of values for a new nation. The hypothesis of this thesis is that Labour Zionism was a project that was linked to the republican tradition. Without always being fully aware of it, Socialist Zionists were, in their own way, experimenting and implementing republican ideas. In keeping the interests of the greater society above individual interests, the Labour movement developed a new political universe with modern institutions and a civic virtue that aimed to protect the polity from dissolution. The republican ambition of Labour Zionism was embodied in its conception of democracy as egalitarian, patriotic and imbued with civic virtue. In order to offer a faithful recounting of the neoliberal turning point of the Israeli economy in 1985, and the role of the Israeli political left in this social and economic paradigmatic switch, this thesis draws on the primary sources kept in the state archives in Jerusalem. In using the records of the Labour movement, this thesis retraces the great 'moments' of Socialist Zionism, from its Russian Revolutionary origins (1905) to its decline at the time of Israel's definitive entry into the 'new economy' in the early 1990s.In the context of increasing tensions within Israeli society between social groups, and the moral crisis following the Lebanon war (1982), this thesis argues that liberal ideas triumphed over republican ideals. In depicting this transformation, the contemporary political turmoil (the so-called 'civic crisis') is put into perspective

Abstract:
‘“Londublin”: The Linguistic and Spatial Politics of “Oxen of the Sun”’ investigates the ways the episode of Ulysses “Oxen of the Sun” negotiates London into Dublin’s public sphere. In 1995, Jay Clayton coined the term “Londublin” to refer to the ways Joyce delved into Dickens’ representations of the “first” city of the empire to write about Dublin, which in 1905 Joyce had provocatively described as the second city of the British Empire, assigning thus a central role to Dublin. The compound word “Londublin” suggests a textual subversion of the concept of London as the “capital city of the world” as Dickens had described it. Clayton’s incisive promulgation of the concept of “Londublin” at the centre of a critical cultural history about the first and second cities in Joyce’s poetic geography has been key for my approach. While Clayton focuses on Joyce’s conversations with Dickens in Ulysses, though, chapter two explores how in “Oxen of the Sun” Joyce handles canonical representations of London by a variety of writers while paying particular attention to Thomas Carlyle’s writings.

Abstract:
All traditional neuropsychological assessment techniques emerged in an era prior to modern neuroimaging. In fact, question-answer/paper-and-pencil test origins that gained traction with Alfred Binet in 1905 remain the same core techniques today. Indeed, Binet’s efforts began the era of standardized human metrics designed to assess a broad spectrum of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions and abilities. During the early part of the 20th century, the concept of an intellectual quotient expressed as a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 also initiated the era of quantitative descriptions of mental and emotional functioning (Anastasi, 1968; Stern, 1912). Other descriptive statistical metrics were applied to human measurement, including scaled, percentile, T-score, and z-score statistics. Statistical measures became part of the assessment lexicon and each possessed strength as well as weakness for descriptive purposes, but together proved to be immensely effective for communicating test findings and inferring average and above or below the norm performances. In turn, descriptive statistical methods became the cornerstone for describing neuropsychological findings, typically reported by domain of functioning (memory, excutive, language, etc.; Cipolotti & Warrington, 1995; Lezak, Howieson, Bigler, & Tranel, 2012). As much as psychology and medicine have incorporated descriptive statistics into research and clinical application, a major focus of both disciplines also has been binary classification—normal versus abnormal. This dichotomization recognizes some variability and individual differences within a test score or laboratory procedure, but at some point the clinician makes the binary decision of normal or abnormal. In the beginnings of neuroimaging, which are discussed more thoroughly below, interpretation of computed tomographic (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans mostly was approached in this manner. Although lots of information was available from CT and MRI images, if nothing obviously abnormal was seen, the radiological conclusion merely stated in the Impression section, “Normal CT (or MRI) of the brain,” with no other qualification (or quantification) of why the findings were deemed normal other than the image appeared that way. Until recently, quantification of information in an image required hand editing and was excruciatingly time consuming.
