A new species of the hermit crab genus Diogenes Dana, 1851 (Diogenidae), D. canaliculatus, is described and illustrated on the basis of material from off the Kerala State, southern India. It is referred to the D. edwardsii (De Haan, 1849) species group, and compared with D. bicristimanus Alcock, 1905, D. fasciatus Rahayu & Forest, 1995, D. laevicarpus Rahayu, 1996 and D. moosai Rahayu & Forest, 1995. The characteristically sculptured left chela and the unarmed dorsal margins of the propodi of the second and third pereopods distinguish the new species from these congeners.

Abstract Introduction Age limits for diagnostics and treatments have been largely removed and replaced by an active diagnostic and treatment practice among the oldest old and has led to concerns about potential overtreatment during the last years of life. Methods Use of prescription medication in the last years of life was assessed from 1995 to 2012 for the entire 1905 and 1915 Danish birth cohorts using nationwide register data. Medication use was quantified as the number different pharmacy-redeemed drugs during 120 days up to a given date. Results For both cohorts, prescription medication use increased with proximity to death and calendar year, while age at death had little impact; use in the 1915 cohort was markedly higher than in the 1905 cohort. Average number of prescription medications varied from below 3 to above 9 depending on age, calendar year and proximity to death. From 1995 to 2005, average number of prescription medications for a 90-year-old person in the last month of life increased from 6.0 to 8.7. Out of 90-year-old persons dying in 2005, 82% were exposed to polypharmacy, up from 63% in 1995. Conclusions Prescription medication use accelerates throughout the last of years life among two Danish oldest old cohorts born 10 years apart, with substantially larger use in the most recent cohort. This pattern suggests an increase in drug prescribing regimens in the period 1995–2012, reinforcing the need for evidence-based guidelines on medications in the particularly vulnerable population of the oldest old patients in their last years of life.

But why then, some would cry, throw this impressive weight into a history of one of Europe's smallest states, 4.5 million souls, placed at the outskirts of the European continent, not a member of the European Union and with fewer than 100 years of independent foreign policy at that?

Abstract:

On 15 November 1902, Asian entrepreneur Alibhai MuUa Jeevanjee launched the African Standard in Mombasa with the support of editor and reporter W.H. Tiller (Kahaso, 1995). As a contractor for railway supplies, Jeevanjee had become wealthy through the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway (Patel, 1997). According to one account, “Ever an enterprising man.. Jeevanjee conceived of the idea of starting a newspaper in Mombasa. In due course, the African Standard was born” (Kahaso, 1995).The newspaper continued to publish weekly reports despite changing its headquarters, ownership and title within its first ten years as a press. Jeevanjee, who had little experience as a journalist, soon sold his paper to two British businessmen. New owners Meyer and Anderson then in 1905 renamed the paper the East African Standard (Odonde, 1995). Five years later, after the seat of government moved from Mombasa to Nairobi, the newspaper's headquarters followed.

Anchocerus Fauvel, 1905 is a small genus of the rove beetle tribe Staphylinini. The most recent diagnoses of this genus were provided in Smetana (1988) and Solodovnikov (2008). Until now, 13 species of Anchocerus have been known in the world fauna. Among them, only two species were known from China: A. shibatai Smetana (1995) from Taiwan and A. schuelkei Smetana (2005) from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces. In addition, one unnamed species of uncertain identity was mentioned by Smetana (2005) from Fujian Province.

Objetos, mobiliários e fotografias, enquanto documentos, contam-nos histórias e nos permitem refletir sobre o que se passou, reverberando um tempo por vezes distante e respondendo a questionamentos a eles feitos. Partindo desse pressuposto, buscamos, neste estudo, analisar os processos educativos que se passaram na cidade de São Leopoldo/RS, no início do século XX, particularmente entre os anos de 1905 e 1940. Para isso, tomamos como documento os mobiliários escolares, especialmente no que tange a fotografias e objetos escolares em exposição salvaguardados no Museu Histórico Visconde São Leopoldo. Os objetos foram registrados por meio fotográfico, catalogados e analisados a partir de sua materialidade. A análise realizada tem como temática a cultura material da escola à luz dos estudos realizados por Antonio Viñao Frago (1995, 2006), Rosa Fátima de Souza (2007) e Hernández Díaz (2002). Entendemos que o conjunto de objetos aqui analisados apresenta uma cultura escolar de práticas locais, em consonância com uma cultura nacional e, até mesmo, internacional. Under this assumption, we seek, in this study, to analyze the educational processes that occurred in the city of São Leopoldo/RS, at the beginning of the 20th century, particularly between the years 1905 and 1940. In this regard, we consider as documents the school furnishings, especially concerning exposed photographs and school objects safeguarded in the Visconde de São Leopoldo Historical Museum. The objects were photographed, catalogued, and analyzed from their materiality. The conducted analysis approaches the material culture of schools considering the studies undertaken by Antonio Viñao Frago (1995, 2006), Rosa Fátima de Souza (2007), and Hernández Díaz (2002). We understand that the set of objects analyzed here presents a school culture of local practices, in accord with a national culture, and even with an international one. Abstract:

We provide an empirical study of the High Court’s citation to case law and secondary sources at decade intervals between 1905 and 2015. We document trends in the number and type of citations over time, both for the Court as a whole and for the individual Justices. We find that in each of the sample years between 1905 and 1975, the Court cited relatively few authorities and for most of this period the majority of citations were to the Court’s own previous decisions or to decisions of the English courts. However, over the last four sample years—1985, 1995, 2005 and 2015—the Court cited more authority. The Court cited an increasing proportion of its own previous decisions over this period as well as a higher proportion of authority from a more diverse range of sources, including secondary sources, largely at the expense of citations to English cases. We conclude that this reflects the emergence of a distinct Australian common law with the High Court as its final arbitrator.

Abstract:

Titanoeca deltshevi sp. n. is described and illustrated from Bulgaria. It appears closely related to T. praefica (Simon, 1870), T. spominima (Taczanowski, 1866) and partially (males only) to T. flavicoma L. Koch, 1872. A faunistic synopsis of the genus Titanoeca Thorell, 1870 in Bulgaria is also presented that is based on new field data and a review of the published literature. Titanoeca flavicoma is newly recorded for Bulgaria and T. turkmenia Wunderlich, 1995 is new for Bulgaria and Albania. Titanoeca incerta (Nosek, 1905) is removed from the Bulgarian, and therefore from the European spider checklists. The possible division of the European members of Titanoeca into three groups based on differences in copulatory and somatic traits is discussed.

Currently, the Cossidae of South America are rather poorly studied. Data on the distribution and taxonomy of Neotropical carpenter moths are lacking. An exception is the clarification of the taxonomic position of the genus Miacora Dyar, 1905 (Yakovlev 2014), Neotropical Cossidae checklist (Donahue 1995), and a preliminary list of Cossidae of Argentina (Penco & Yakovlev 2015). The majority of Neotropical Cossidae genera have not been studied and the taxonomic position of some genera remains completely unresolved. Additionally, images of genitalia of the Neotropical genera have not been published, including the genera Brypoctia Schoorl, 1990 and Schreiteriana Fletcher & Nye, 1982 (Cossidae: Zeuzerinae). The taxonomic position of the second genus was questioned by Schoorl (1990).

This paper addresses the long-term evolving nature of forest management as reflected in Managing Multiple Uses on National Forests, 1905–1995, a new book, and recently published perspectives on Canadian forest management. It elaborates new understandings about the nature of forest management on public lands and proposes a new definition. It identifies forest management as a continuous, unending learning experience, and explains how it has been on the Pathway toward a fully holistic ecological approach from the beginning. It closes on the current dilemma in Canada and the USA – the lack of agreement among the public about the desirable use and management of their forests. Questo lavoro è dedicato ai Coleotteri Idroadefagi raccolti in otto località del Parco Nazionale d’Odzala (Repubblica del Congo); complessivamente sono elencate 73 specie (1 Haliplidae, 65 Dytiscidae e 7 Noteridae). Gli autori descrivono due nuove specie: Copelatus poungai n. sp. (gruppo erichsonii, sottogruppo atrosulcatus), vicina a C. andreinii Régimbart, 1905, C. compertus Guignot, 1956 e C. occultus Bilardo & Rocchi, 1995 distinguibile per la forma del pene; Copelatus mbokoensis n. sp. (gruppo erichsonii, sottogruppo vigintistriatus), vicina a C. ambiguus Bertrand & Legros, 1975 ed a C. singularis Bilardo & Rocchi, 1995 distinguibile per la forma del pene. Venti specie di Ditiscidi sono segnalate per la prima volta per il territorio congolese (Repubblica del Congo e Repubblica Democratica del Congo). Sono infine fornite osservazioni su alcune delle specie raccolte.

Abstract:

The Old World genus Mesocomys Cameron (1905) (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae: Eupelminae) is revised. Eleven species, including two newly described species, are recognized and keyed in two previously established species groups, the albitarsis and the pulchriceps species groups sensu Gibson (1995), but with additional features provided to distinguish members of the two groups. Five species are recognized in the pulchriceps group—Mesocomys anelliformis n. sp., M. longiscapus n. sp., M. orientalis Ferrière, 1935, M. pauliani Ferrière, 1951, and M. pulchriceps Cameron, 1905. Seven species are assigned to the albitarsis group, but one, M. aegeriae Sheng, 1996 is treated as a nomen dubium; the six recognized and keyed species in the albitarsis group are M. albitarsis (Ashmead, 1904), M. breviscapis Yao, Yang & Zhao, 2009, M. menzeli (Ferrière, 1930b), M. obscurus (Ferrière, 1930b) revised stat., M. superansi Yao, Yang & Zhao, 2009, and M. trabalae Yao, Yang & Zhao, 2009. Within the albitarsis group, the species are further discussed relative to two newly established species subgroups, the albitarsis subgroup for M. albitarsis, M. menzeli and M. obscurus, and the aegeriae subgroup for M. aegeriae, M. breviscapis, M. superansi and M. trabalae. Females of the albitarsis subgroup possess a finely sculptured mesoscutal medial lobe in combination with partly infuscate fore wings and/or at least partly pale flagellum, whereas females of the aegeriae subgroup possess a much more coarsely sculptured mesoscutal medial lobe and hyaline fore wings in combination with a dark flagellum. Members of the albitarsis species group are restricted to the Oriental and eastern Palaearctic regions except for a single female of the aegeriae subgroup seen from Algeria that is provisionally identified as M. breviscapis; members of the pulchriceps group are restricted to the Afrotropical region except for M. orientalis from the Oriental region. Newly placed in synonymy are M. aegeriae Sheng, 1998 under M. aegeriae Sheng, 1996 n. syn., M. sinensis Yao, Yang & Zhao, 2009 under M. breviscapis Yao, Yang & Zhao, 2009 n. syn., M. atulyus Narendran, 1995 under M. orientalis Ferrière, 1935 n. syn., M. vuilleti (Crawford, 1912) under M. pulchriceps Cameron, 1905 n. syn., and Semianastatus orientalis Kalina, 1984 and Mesocomys kalinai Özdikmen, 2011 under M. albitarsis (Ashmead, 1904) n. syns. Lectotypes are newly designated for M. menzeli, M. obscurus, M. orientalis, M. pauliani, M. pulchriceps and M. vuilleti. Morphological features characteristic of the genus and of the highly dimorphic sexes are described and illustrated, and the species are keyed, described, and illustrated through macrophotography. Phylogenetics are discussed for the genus, the two species groups, and species within the pulchriceps group. Distribution and host records are also summarized for each species.

Abstract:

A Little Princess is a novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett (1905). This novel has been adapted several times into film, one of which is Alfonso Cuaron's (1995) work produced by Warner Bross Picture. This film was released in 1995 with the same title, "A Little Princess". This article focuses on the motives and ideologies of the adaptation process from novel to film. The changes that occur are a consequence of using media that change from text to screen scenes. This study will compare the intrinsic elements contained in novels and films. This research will also discuss how the transformation from novel adaptation to film and the motives. The adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon (2006) was used to analyze the motives of adapting novels to films and will be supported by the theory of Mythology by Roland Barthes' (1957) to find ideology. Barthes' semiotic analysis helps the writer find the hidden ideology in the adaptation work, leading us to find the motive of the transformation process. As a result, the adaptation work of Alfonso Cuaron shows the existence of an ideology of feminism and American values. This ideology exists because of the cultural and political motives of the filmmaker to gain benefit from the process of adaptation. Keywords : adaptation, ideology, myth, motives.

Abstract:

Ashmead (1905) described a solitary alate queen ant, collected in the Philippines, as Aphomyrmex emeryi. The generic combination, obviously a misspelling of Aphomomyrmex Emery, 1899 (see Bolton, 1995) placed the name in the subfamily Formicinae. Wheeler (1920) disagreed with the generic combination and removed emeryi to its own monotypic genus, Pseudaphomomyrmex. He did not characterise the genus at that time but later (Wheeler, 1922: 695) included it in a key to Formicinae, thereby indicating which characters he considered diagnostic and apparently confirming its position in that subfamily. A short time later Emery (1925: 44) dismissed Pseudaphomomyrmex as a junior synonym of Aphomomyrmex but the name was later revived from synonymy, probably accidentally, by Chapman & Capco (1951: 214). From its description to the present Pseudaphomomyrmex has been placed in a number of different tribes, summarised in Bolton (2003), but always retained in subfamily Formicinae.

Aconitum Linnaeus (1753: 532) (Ranunculaceae) consists of about 400 species and is widely distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere (Tamura 1993, Brink & Woods 1997, Li & Kadota 2001, Luo et al. 2005). This genus has been usually divided into three subgenera: A. subg. Aconitum, A. subg. Lycoctonum (Candolle 1817: 367) Petermann (1846: 15), and A. subg. Gymnaconitum (Stapf 1905: 178) Rapaics (1907: 139) (Bisset 1981, Kadota 1987, Li & Kadota 2001, Lim & Park 2001, Wang et al. 2009). Among them, A. subg. Lycoctonum is perennial and rhizomatous and consists of about 40 species (Tamura 1995, Hong et al. 2017). In the Korean Peninsula, eight species and one variety have been reported in this subgenus (Lim et al. 2017, Korea National Arboretum 2017), of which four species, namely A. pseudolaeve Nakai (1935: 139), A. pteropus Nakai (1937: 400), A. puchonroenicum Uyeki & Sakata (1938: 14), and A. quelpaertense Nakai (1935: 145), are endemic to the Korean Peninsula.

Abstract:

Human error is pervasive (Kirwan, 1994), and its consequences are often costly (e.g. time, money) or even deadly (e.g. Neumann, 1995). Yet, many types of human fallibility are not anomalous occurrences, but instead flow from psychological processes that normally produce correct behavior (Mach, 1905). It is therefore reasonable to argue that some types of errors may be predictable (so long as situational demands and human capabilities/limitations are properly taken into consideration) and subsequently, amenable to computational modeling techniques. This research seeks to incorporate and implement psychological theory of human error in GOMS models of human performance by first classifying errors under a simplified GEMS schematic (Reason, 1990), then extracting observed error probabilities from simpler mobile phone tasks, and validating model predictions in a more complex, mobile phone task. Results revealed no differences between model predictions and human production of error across all types of error classification, and models accurately predicted error rates for younger and older users based upon previously validated, age-informed processing parameters included in each age-sensitive model.
