Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Sea level variability around Japan from 1906 to 2010 is examined using a regional ocean model, along with observational data and the CMIP5 historical simulations. The regional model reproduces observed interdecadal sea level variability, for example, high sea level around 1950, low sea level in the 1970s, and sea level rise during the most recent three decades, along the Japanese coast. Sensitivity runs reveal that the high sea level around 1950 was induced by the wind stress curl changes over the North Pacific, characterized by a weakening of the Aleutian low. In contrast, the recent sea level rise is primarily caused by heat and freshwater flux forcings. That the wind-induced sea level rise along the Japanese coast around 1950 is as large as the recent sea level rise highlights the importance of natural variability in understanding regional sea level change on interdecadal time scales.

Abstract:
The article develops a model of gold-standard efficiency in the context of the theory of efficient asset markets. Efficiency is measured by the ratio of experienced disutility to the hypothetical loss under perfect gold arbitrage and neutral exchange-rate speculation. Dollar-sterling gold-point estimates for 1890 to 1906 are generated using the methodology of focusing on the dominant arbitrageurs, the prevailing exchange instrument, and the primary form of gold shipped. Gold- standard efficiency is remarkably high and only marginally below exchange- market efficiency from 1950 to 1966 under Bretton Woods.

Although Cassirer's four-volume Das Erkenntnisproblem in der Philosophie und Wissenschaft der neueren Zeit has long been highly regarded as an example of historical scholarship — Cassirer was awarded the golden Kuno-Fischer Medal of the University of Heidelberg in July 1914 for the first two volumes (published 1906 and 1907) — its importance for understanding his theoretical position seems to have gone unrecognized. In the English-speaking world it is, unfortunately, only known through the fourth volume, and when this appeared in English in 1950 it met with a negative, even hostile, reception (see Passmore 1968, 315f.).

In this paper we discuss the professional activity of Leopoldo Nachbin (1922-1993) in the period in which he worked at National Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Brazil (FNFi/UB, in Portuguese) until his retirement by Institute of Mathematics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IM/UFRJ, in Portuguese). We identify the influence played by some mathematicians such as G. Mammana (1893-1980), L. Schwartz (1915-2002), A. Monteiro (1907-1980), A. Weil (1906-1998), J. Dieudonné (1906-1992), M. Stone (1903-1989), and A. A. Albert (1905-1972) in the professional training of L. Nachbin. We also address the serious difficulties he encountered in the Mathematics Department of FNFi when he was entered in the competition, opened in 1950, for the post of full Professor (Professor Catedrático) of Mathematics and Superior Analysis of FNFi. We emphasize in the paper, that the period from 1947 to the 1960s marks the most creative and productive phase in terms of scientific research in the academic life of L. Nachbin.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this short paper, the author takes a closer look at Einar Haugen's (1906–1994) writings in as far as they touch upon the historiography of linguistics. After a sketch of his scholarly background and the role he played in the Linguistic Society of America generally and, more particularly, as a historian of linguistic thought from his well-known LSA presidential address of 1950 onwards, Haugen's treatment of the so-called First grammatical treatise comes under closer scrutiny. In particular, the author discusses two expressions in Haugen's 1950 edition of the text that seem to have given rise to much speculation, namely, the word grein and the (probably juridical) phrase skipta máli. It is argued that Haugen and others—notably Hreinn Benediktsson—are at best overinterpreting them by assigning modern structural phonologist meanings to the words, turning them into metalinguistic terms. It is maintained instead that the First Grammarian had made a practical argument in favor of the addition of four vowels not found in the five-vowel Roman alphabet necessitated by the facts of Old Icelandic, and that the text was basically a pedagogical treatise on orthographic requirements and not a precocious phonological discussion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dragutin Dj. Tufegdzic (1881-1960), a teacher, priest and writer, was Janko Veselinovic's son-in-law. After graduation from Sabac Grammar School (in 1897) and Teacher Training School in Aleksinac (in 1900), he first found employment as a teacher. In 1906 Tufegdzic married Persida, Janko Veselinovic's daughter, and in 1908 he was ordained priest. He served in Badovinci in Macva District, and beginning in 1936, at St Mark's Church in Belgrade, where he was dean (1941-1954). During 1931 he visited the holy places in Palestine and became a pilgrim (hajji). Tufegdzic was a prolific writer, contributor to Orthodoxy, The Voice of the Church, The Wreath, The Bosnian Fairy, The Wheel Dance, The New Spark (Pravoslavlje, Glas crkve, Venac, Bosanska vila, Kolo, Nova iskra) and other journals, the author of a brochure, two novellas and a short story collection. As the heir to Veselinovic?s manuscript legacy, during his lifetime D. Tufegdzic took meticulous care of his father-in-law?s heritage. In The Wreath during 1913 and 1914 he published four notes from Veselinovic?s life (?Janko and the Operator?, ?Janko and the Animal Doctor?, ?Janko?s Lottery Ticket? and ?Janko Responds to the Sergeant?), and they resemble the notes we present here: ?From Janko?s Childhood?, ?Janko?s Last Christmas?, ?Janko?s Gallantry? and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?). The manuscripts are preserved in the Intermunicipal Historical Archives in Sabac within the Presents and Purchases Collection. The notes were edited according to their date of origin and their call numbers in the Sabac Archives: ?From Janko?s Childhood?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950, Collection (No. 18), ?Janko?s Last Christmas?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950 (No. 19), ?Janko?s Gallantry?, Belgrade, February 12, 1950 (No. 20), and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?, Belgrade, February 13, 1950 (No. 21). The notes were written on chequered paper 21x33,5 cm in size. Although Tufegdzic wrote his memoirs of Janko Veselinovic from a considerable time distance, his testimonies can be considered authentic, because he got them directly from Janko?s daughter and his wife Persida.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the first in Russia, the Department of Ophthalmology at the Kazan Medical Institute, founded in 1867, produced a pleiad of remarkable scientists whose works were devoted to the most topical problems of ophthalmology. The works of Professors E. V. Adamyuk (1839-1906), A. G. Agababov (1863-1922), V. V. Chirkovsky (1875-1956), V. E. Adamyuk (1877-1950), A. N. Murzin (1885-1953) created Kazan school of ophthalmologists, which was always responsive to the needs of practical healthcare, was in the forefront of struggle with blindness and with the most frequent eye diseases. Thus, the name of the world famous founder of the chair E. V. Adamyuk is connected with the formation of the national ophthalmology. His doctoral thesis "About the intraocular pressure" was a significant event in the world literature. The main scientific direction of the research carried out at the Department of Ophthalmology since the first days of its establishment up to the present time was the study of the problem of glaucoma.

Abstract:
Dale showed in 1906 in a seminal work that ergot inhibits the pressor effect of adrenaline. Stoll at Sandoz isolated ergotamine from ergot in 1918. Based on the belief that migraine was due to increased sympathetic activity, ergotamine was first used in the acute treatment of migraine by Maier in Switzerland in 1925. In 1938 Graham and Wolff demonstrated the parallel decrease of temporal pulsations and headache after ergotamine i.v. This inspired the vascular theory of Wolff: an initial cerebral vasoconstriction followed by an extracranial vasodilation. Dihydroergotamine (DHE) was introduced as an adrenolytic agent in 1943. It is still in use parenterally and by the nasal route. Before the triptan era ergotamine and DHE had widespread use as the only specific antimigraine drugs. From 1950 the world literature on ergotamine was dominated by two adverse events: ergotamine overuse headache and the relatively rare overt ergotism. Recently, oral ergotamine, which has an oral bioavailability of < 1%, has been inferior to oral triptans in randomized clinical trials. A European Consensus in 2000 concluded that ergotamine is not a drug of first choice. In an American review of 2003 it was suggested that ergotamine may be considered in the treatment of selected patients with moderate to severe migraine.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A cladistic analysis of the species of Natalis Laporte (1836), and related genera Eunatalis Schenkling (1909), Metademius Schenkling (1899) and Eurymetomorphon Pic (1950), is presented. Representatives of the genus Calendyma Lacordaire (1857), are used as the outgroup. The synapomorphies of Eurymetomorphon allow to restore it as a valid generic entity. The synapomorphies shared by Eunatalis and Metademius suggest that these genera constitute a monophyletic group, related to Natalis, but evolved independently in the Australian region. According to this statement it is proposed to restore Eunatalis and Metademius as valid generic entities, but their characterization will require the analysis of a greater number of species. Within the genus Natalis, two monophyletic groups are recognized: one formed by N. laplacei Laporte (1836), the generic type species, and N. wagneri Lesne (1911), and another one composed of N. punctipennis Germain (1855), N. impressus (Spinola 1849), and N. pallidus Solervicens (1976) for which the genus Neogyponyx Schenkling (1906) is revalidated. A redescription of Neogyponyx is provided as is a key to the species.

Abstract:
Georg von Neumayer played a central role in building the foundations of Australian meteorology and in shaping the global framework of cooperation under the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the forerunner of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Though his time in Australia was relatively brief, his name stands alongside those of Lieutenant William Dawes (active from 1788-1791), Sir Thomas Brisbane (1822-24), Robert Ellery (1863-1895), Sir Charles Todd (1856-1906), Clement Wragge (1883-1903) and Henry Chamberlain Russell (1859-1904) in the short list of Australia’s outstanding meteorological pioneers; and with Lt. Matthew Fontaine Maury, Admiral Robert FitzRoy and Professors C.H.D. Buys Ballot, H. Wild and E. Mascart in building the 19th century framework for international cooperation in meteorology, especially through his role as President of the International Polar Commission which organised the First International Polar Year (1882-83). This paper provides a brief overview of the origins of Australian meteorology and of the 1873 establishment and early work of the IMO in providing the international framework for cooperation in meteorology until its replacement by the intergovernmental WMO in 1950.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper deals with the controversy over the catalogue of the writings of Jan Hus between Josef Truhlář (1840–1914), a curator of the Prague University Library, and Václav Flajšhans (1866–1950), a high-school professor, which took place from 1898 until 1905. The latter had been preparing an inventory of the works of Jan Hus from 1898 (published in 1900), while the former had been working on the catalogue of Prague university manuscripts from 1897 (published in 1905/1906). They discussed the evidence of the extant manuscripts of the works of Jan Hus in detail. Especially the first phase of the controversy showed that Flajšhans wanted to present himself as a skilled scholar who could interpret Hus’s works in the context of contemporary national discourse and whose research was based on a close examination of manuscript sources. However, he encountered the incisive judgment and tenacity of Truhlář, who pointed out errors and shortcomings in Flajšhans’s works and fallacies in his polemical articles. Moreover, Truhlář sometimes resorted to certain simplifications, for example, regarding the number of the manuscripts discovered, and he also made minor mistakes, which he later openly admitted, as did Flajšhans in some cases. Nevertheless, the contribution of both scholars to the research on Jan Hus has been essential.

Abstract:
The American Society of International Law (ASIL), incorporated by Act of Congress in 1950, was founded in 1906 “to promote the establishment and maintenance of international relations on the basis of law and justice.” As we celebrate the centennial of this, the Society’s principal publication, it is appropriate to examine the present and future prospects of this project. Is it still a compelling aspiration in the era of U.S. superpower-dom?The founding of the Society and initiation of the Journal (AJIL) must be seen in the context of the then-prevalent American commitment to the idea that a world of international law and international tribunals would be a natural, even historically inevitable, extrapolation of a good American idea. Speaking in 1890 to the first Pan-American Conference, President Benjamin Harrison congratulated the delegates on formulating a hemispheric arbitration agreement. “We rejoice,” he said, “that you have found in the organization of our Government something suggestive and worthy of imitation.” At The Hague in 1907, Secretary of State Elihu Root, the founding president of the ASIL, called for the creation of an international court “which would pass upon questions between nations with the same impartial and impersonal judgment that the Supreme Court of the United States gives to questions arising between citizens of the different States.”

Latvian Academic LibraryRupniecibas str.

Abstract:
Abstract In the early twentieth century, Chinese literati painting was embroiled in arguments on the relationship between ancient and modern or east and west. Therefore, the artistic practices of Wu Changshuo, Chen Shizeng, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong and so on, were in response to this development. However, with the occurrence of World War ii and changes in the post-war situation, literati painting underwent further, new changes in different regions. This article intends to discuss the overseas Chinese painters Chen Wen Hsi and Chung Chen Sun as examples in exploring the new development of literati painting in Singapore and Malaysia in the second half of the twentieth century. Chen Wen Hsi was born in Jieyang County, Guangdong Province in 1906. He studied at Shanghai Fine Arts College and Xinhua Art College. He went to Singapore and held an exhibition in 1948. In 1950, he taught at The Chinese High School, and the following year also began teaching Chinese ink painting at Nanyang Fine Arts College. Chung Chen Sun, a native of Mei County, Guangdong Province, was born in 1935 in Malacca, Malaysia. In 1953, he entered the Department of Art Education of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, which was founded by Lim Hak Tai. Chung was inspired by predecessors such as Cheong Soo-pien, Chen Wen Hsi and Chen Chong-swee who had pursued the Nanyang style. In 1967, Chung founded the Malaysian Academy of Art. Their styles of painting not only incorporate the Eastern aesthetics and Western theory but also include diverse elements. Their paintings wrote a new page in the history of literati painting during the Cold War era.

Abstract:
The World species of the genus Ischnopoda, Stephens are revised and the genus is redefined. The genera Amanota Casey and Rechota Sharp are considered as new synonyms of Ischnopoda. The revised Ischnopoda includes thirty-eight species, 13 of which are described as new: Ischnopoda assingi sp. n., I. boliviana sp. n., I. brasiliana sp. n., I. chilensis sp. n., I. depressa sp. n., I. drugmandi sp. n., I. lingshani sp. n., I. nebulosa sp. n., I. pretiosa sp. n., I. pseudobasalis sp. n., I. rugosa sp. n., I. schuelkei sp. n. and I. spissata sp. n. The following new synonymies are proposed (each first name being valid): Ischnopoda basalis (Cameron, 1923) = Amanota bimarginata Pace, 1996, syn. n.; I. capensis (Casey, 1906) = Falagria arachnipes Fauvel, 1907, syn. n. = Amanota densicollis Pace, 1986, syn. n. = A. rufobrunnea Tottenham, 1957, syn. n.; Ischnopoda rudicollis (Bernhauer, 1934) = Amanota purpurascens Tottenham, 1957, syn. n. = A. wittei Cameron, 1950, syn. n. The following synonym is confirmed: I. leucopus (Marsham, 1802) = Tachyusa chalybea Erichson, 1839. Lectotypes are designated for Amanota capensis Casey, A. semiopaca Cameron, Ischnopoda subaenea Eppelsheim, Rechota impressa Sharp, Staphylinus leucopus Marsham, Tachyusa abyssina Bernhauer, T. burgeoni Bernhauer, T. chalybea Erichson, T. fissicollis Fairmaire et Germain, T. rudicollis Bernhauer, T. scitula Erichson, T. seticornis Sharp, T. sparsa Sharp and T. umbratica Erichson. Twenty-one species are given in new combination. All species are briefly described/redescribed and illustrated. An identification key to the World species of Ischnopoda is provided. A phylogeny of thirty-eight species belonging to the genus Ischnopoda is proposed, based on fifty-two morphological characters. The cladistic analysis provides a single most parsimonious tree. The genus Ischnopoda is redefined and species group are introduced and defined: leucopus group (eleven species), impressa group (nine species) and capensis group (eighteen species).

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Early Pleistocene site of Palan-Tyukan (MNQ18, ca 1.85 Mya) is located in Transcaucasia, northwestern Azerbaijan. In total, more than 300 mammalian bones were collected there by M.V. Sablin in 1986 and 1990. The remains were laid close to each other in a 25 m2 lens-like accumulation, in a stratum of normally magnetized (the upper part of the Olduvai subchron) yellowish-grey Lower Apsheron loams. No any excavations have been carried here out since. The present study is based on the analysis of the Caniformia remains. The occurrence of raccoon dog in Palan-Tyukan provides knowledge about the Eurasian stratigraphic range of this taxon: it represents one of the latiest records of the species Nyctereutes megamastoides (Pomel, 1842) in all of Europe. The bear tooth (was found earlear by N.A. Lebedeva nearby) is ascribed here to the species Ursus etruscus Cuvier, 1823. The taxonomic scenario of the Plio-Pleistocene tribe Galictini of Eurasia is intricate and has been debated since the beginning of the last century. The dispute arose mainly due to the scantiness and the sparse nature of their fossil record. The main conclusion about the Pannonictis nestii (Martelli, 1906) remains from Palan-Tyukan was reached after a detailed morphological and metrical analysis. Palearctic badger remains were assigned to the species Meles thorali Viret, 1950 – the ancestor of the European and Asian badgers. The occurrence of M. thorali in Palan-Tyukan represents one of the latiest records of the species. The otter material from Palan-Tyukan is here referred to Lutraeximia cf. umbra Cherin et al., 2016. A Caniformia community of the Palan-Tyukan presents evidence of the wider variety of environments ranging from wooded areas with bodies of water to scrub and even savanna landscape in a relatively humid subtropical climate. The fauna of Palan-Tyukan is an important biostratigrafic reference fauna for mammal zonation in Europe. New discoveries can also help to clarify the taxonomic status of many of these extinct forms.
