Full textJean Amrouche, a Christian and a berberian, died wrecked by his desperate attempt to be at once both French and Algerian, in the name of values that have been taught to him by France. As a poet, he soon became a literary critic (L'Arche) then an interviewer on the French radio. During his period of integration to occident, the lower parts of his being took over the higher inspirations of his noble soul, but deep inside he kept remorse and nostalgia over that "dead shadow of himself". Together with his profession of writer, he had to go through the spiritual drama of the colonized people. He kept proclaiming that the Algerian problem was in fact a French one. The France of "the rights of man gospel and equality of chances", the "mythical" France is by vacation for liberty of the nations. According to him, the Algerian struggle for dignity and independence was not a struggle against France. Consequently, he involved himself in it by words, writings and secret negotiations. Through them, he recollected his people's soul the one of his eponym hero "Jugurtha", and simultaneously, his poetic inspiration. His route can be lighted trough his diary (1928-1962), his correspondence (820 recovered letters), annotations, rough copies, radio series, all unpublished documents

Full textThis study is about the work of Henri Baltz, a primary teacher of the region of Voiron (Isère) where he taught from 1941 to 1973. He created an empiric method for learning spelling and grammar, whose spreading has been limited yet. Starting from both analysis of this fact and of his own attempt of theorical justification, compared with other methods of the same time but better known, this study deduces the causes which promote the wideners of the spreading of teaching method and defines which constitues the specificity of our teaching work

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the Beckettian experience that can be characterized as “interior” because of its consequences for the subjectivity, starting from the notion of inner experience developed by Georges Bataille in his book of 1943. The discussion is centered around the figure of the subject that presents himself as the narrator-character of his own story and, by dramatizing his process of writing, demonstrates the insufficiency of the code regarding the diversity of the “I” and the “world”. Through the development of his narrative, that constantly questions and doubts the language, he realizes his singular experience. This process opens the possibility to tension the limits of reason, moral, logic, of the “I” and the language

Full textIn this study, the approach of the status of objects in narrative films made in hollywood is mainly hedonistic and centered on the spectator, but it pleads for the idea that the pleasure taken stems from a thorough study of meaning. The two parts of the thesis deal with : a) the way objects are made to appear on films; b) the meaning they assume. The first part (the profilmic) describes, after etienne souriau, the presence of objects on the screen : a) special effects and films as a "written" text; b) objects as a mental reference affording a basic material within a maze of correspondences; c) the migration of objects between their sources and films (examples : citizen kane, the maltese falcon, the birds). The second part analyses the main significant functions of objects a reading of the first minutes of some hithchock's films make quite clear : a) the three main diegetic functions which create the filmic world : space, time and character building; b) narrative and plot exemplified through a study of hitchcock's use of the objects of communication; c) meaning and the symbolism of objects (textual readings; interpretation; thematic readings; "reveries"). The general conclusion, after a survey of the objects used as metaphors of film, considers the ambiguous outcome of a hypermetropic vision afforded by film and tv as it is best seen through hitchcock's

Full textEven if jesters are very popular characters, the very concept barely exists in critical vocabulary. Jesters, which play an important role in every society, can be defined throughout the history of madness, implicating a sociological and anthropological approach, as well as throughout the history of theater, located at the cross-section of arts and literature. This research sheds light on the characteristics and functions of jesters in the 20th century. The 20th century was a post-metaphysical age marked by two significant transformations. First, a “crisis of purpose” defined by Jean-François Mattéi as a loss of meaning in life. Since jesters invite us into a socio-political and a metaphysical critique, it only makes sense to question their role in that matter. Secondly, the 20th century was home to a revolution in drama, seen through linguistic experimentations, the introduction of space in theatrical theory and practice, and the exploitation of new electrical technologies that advanced the art of scenography. As natural explorers of new aesthetic forms, jesters had a great role to play in this revolution. This research questions the use of jesters in the modern times, showing how they echo the dramatic revolution, and therefore help society to overcome the crisis of purpose. The corpus is a selection of theatrical works from Alfred Jarry, Michel de Ghelderode, Samuel Beckett, Roland Dubillard and Alain Badiou. The period of investigation stretches from 1896, the year in which Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi premiered, to 2018, marked by the debut of the final segment of Alain Badiou’s saga Ahmed. This study is primarily based on textual analysis, relying heavily on stage performances documented through interviews and press articles. The first section deals with the history of jesters, from Antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century, in order to understand their role in modernity, in contrast. It allows us, in the second part, to show how jesters reappropriated symbolic attributes in modern times, under the form of a typology. The third part returns to the fundamentals of madness, insisting on linguistic creativity and on a complex form of humour, a mix of burlesque and tragic effects. Only with this understanding of jesters can we begin to uncover how they came to be named “morosophs”, meaning “wise fools”, and how they can provide solutions to the crises of modern times

Full textAn economic operation relies, after all, upon one single thing. Upon one of the most elementary things, that is, simply: the use of an object. Such is the root of any economic act, i.e. of any act which, at some time, purports to be useful or profitable. But one effect entailed by such an act is to cancel all the value that such an object may instantaneoulsy present (such as its spell, drollery or, yet, its oddness). In other words, the use of an object implies that the sensitive value of that object be substituted by another sort of value, namely its use value. However, as a matter of fact, the useful employment of something is in no way automatic. Indeed, such a useful employment of things is actually equivalent to a deliberate opposition to the usual course of things, which consists, on the contrary, of a useless expenditure of all things... Still, from a general point of view, such a deliberate act against this usual course of things only achieves, after all, to always increase it. Just because such an act (thus, not being automatic), yet before it may have started to operate, first has to dissipate for itself a whole bunch of available forces. All of this leads us to acknowledge that the true product of an economic operation is always only a better squandering of the riches at disposal. It is according to this point of view that my research has focused on the notion of Degrowth, by combining Georges Bataille’s theory of “general economy” with economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen’s works
