Abstract:
Three cuttlefish belonging to the ‘doratosepion’ species complex (Sepia braggi Verco, 1907, S. cottoni Adam, 1979 and S. vercoi Adam, 1979) were recognised in the most recent review of the Australian Sepiidae (Lu 1998). Five additional species are recorded here for the Australian fauna, S. bidhaia, sp. nov., S. koilados, sp. nov. and S. tanybracheia, sp. nov., together with two species previously known only from cuttlebones (and, therefore, of uncertain status), S. limata (Iredale, 1926a) and S. rhoda (Iredale, 1954). Sepia braggi and S. vercoi are also redescribed. A key to these eight species, and a table of diagnostic characters for all ‘doratosepion’ species are provided.

Abstract:
Oncodostigma Diels (1912: 143) was erected by Diels (1912) based on the type species O. leptoneura Diels (1912: 143). Five additional species were subsequently added to the genus, viz.: O. wilsonii Guillaumin (1931: 224), O. monosperma (Hooker & Thomson 1872: 57) Sinclair (1951: 605), O. mindorense (Merrill 1907: 273) Bân (1974: 1779), O. hainanense (Merrill 1925: 131) Tsiang & Li (1979: 81) and O. microflorum Okada (1996: 8). Van Heusden (1992) conducted a detailed comparative study of the floral morphology of Annonaceae and noted that Oncodostigma is not clearly distinct from Meiogyne Miquel (1865: 12). She subsequently transferred O. mindorense and O. monosperma to Meiogyne and reduced O. wilsonii to synonymy with M. cylindrocarpa (Burck 1911: 433) Heusden (1994: 499). The name Oncodostigma hainanense (Merrill 1925: 131) Tsiang & Li (1979: 81) had previously been transferred to Meiogyne by Bân (1973).

Abstract:
The genus Ctenothrips (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) was proposed by Franklin in 1907 with C. bridwelli as the type species from North America (Franklin, 1907). Up to now, eleven species have been known, all from the Holarctic region (Mound, 2011; Haga & Okajima, 1989; Kudo, 1977; Bhatti, 1976), and six of these have been described from China (Chen, 1979; Feng et al., 2003; Tong & Zhang, 1992). Though related to one of the most popular genera, Taeniothrips Amyot and Serville, by having similar head and antennae, Ctenothrips is distinctly characterized with polygonally reticulated body surface of abdomen and tube-like abdominal segment X. Species of the genus Ctenothrips have been found mainly in alpine regions, but we collected the new species described here from an area only as high as altitude of 900m in the southwest of China. In this paper, C. guizhouensis sp. n., is added as the twelfth member to this genus, and an identification key is provided to all 12 species, based mainly on descriptions. The new species was collected in the flowers of a species of Galium (Rubiaceae) at the Donggong temple, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. The type specimens are preserved in Yunnan Agricultural University.

Abstract In her coming-of-age memoir, A Time to Remember: Growing Up in New York before the Great War (1979), Marie Jastrow, a Jewish-American immigrant woman, cleverly captures the daily life of her family in Yorkville, New York City, in the early decades of the twentieth century. Jastrow recalls the difficulties she and her parents had to face during their first years in the United States, between 1907 and 1918, and the ways in which they managed to adapt to the social, economic, political, and cultural circumstances of the new environment. Therefore, this essay sets out to explore how Jastrow’s family members succeeded in negotiating the challenges of a gendered immigrant experience.

Abstract:
The Bupleurum feeding species of Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) Braun, 1917 are revised. Five species are recognised: T. bupleurella (Chrétien, 1907), T. sanctibenedicti Klimesch, 1979, T. megaphallus van Nieukerken, Z. Laštůvka & A. Laštůvka sp. n. feeding on Bupleurum gibraltarium in southern Spain, T. chretieni Z. Laštůvka, A. Laštůvka & van Nieukerken sp. n. feeding on Bupleurum rigidum in southern France, Spain and Portugal, and T. siciliae Z. Laštůvka, A. Laštůvka & van Nieukerken sp. n. feeding on B. fruticosum in Sicily. The group is restricted to southwestern Europe and northern Africa, the area where most shrubby Bupleurum species occur. A NJ and Bayesian analysis of DNA barcodes of four out of five species suggest a single origin of Bupleurum feeding in the subgenus Glaucolepis.

Full text
Abstract:
Prosaspicera Kieffer is an Aspicerinae genus (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae) with a mostly Nearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical and Oriental distribution. Prosaspicera is here cited from the Eastern Palaearctic (Japan) for the first time. Morphological features necessary to differentiate species of Prosaspicera are described. Although Prosaspicera brevispinosa Díaz, 1979, represents an atypical intraspecific variability that suggests it may be a species complex, other species of Prosaspicera are morphologically homogeneous. The type material of the 17 known species of Prosaspicera has been studied. Out of these 17 species, 15 are here considered as valid, since Prosaspicera africana (Kinsey, 1919) and P. kinsantua (Benoit, 1956) are both a syn nov. of P. tropica (Kieffer, 1910). These 15 valid species are here redescribed. The examination of hundreds of additional specimens supplied by different institutions suggests there is a general lack of knowledge concerning the species diversity of this genus. For the first time the males of P. optivus Quinlan, 1979, P. albihirta (Ashmead, 1887), P. pugionifera (Kieffer, 1907) and P. ueteri (Borgmeier, 1935) and, the females of P. aterrima (Kieffer, 1910) and P. validispina (Kieffer, 1910) are described. Fifteen new species are described: P. angustispina Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. carinata Pujade-Villar sp. nov., P. costulata Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. confusa Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. curvispina Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. dentata Pujade-Villar sp. nov., P. inaudita Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. joani Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar sp. nov., P. kiefferi Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. mariarosae Ros-Farré & Pujade-Villar sp. nov., P. orientalis Pujade-Villar sp. nov., P. pseudoclavata Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. spinosa Ros-Farré sp. nov., P. splendida Ros-Farré sp. nov., and P. uniformis Ros-Farré sp. nov. A key to the 30 valid species of Prosaspicera is given. All species are thoroughly illustrated.

Abstract:
In the presently reported study, we estimated length–weight relation (LWRs) for seven species of freshwater fishes from Central America. Samples were collected using seines from 60 sites across Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama during field expeditions conducted between 1997 and 2012. The fishes were preserved and transported to the lab, where their total weight (W) was measured (to nearest 0.0001 g) and standard lengths were taken (to nearest 0.01 mm). Data were collected from four livebearers (Poeciliidae), Alfaro cultratus (Regan, 1908), Phallichthys amates (Miller, 1907), Poecilia gillii (Kner, 1863), and Priapichthys annectens (Regan, 1907); the cichlids (Cichlidae), Parachromis dovii (Günther, 1864) and Parachromis managuensis (Günther, 1867); and a silverside (Atherinopsidae), Atherinella hubbsi (Bussing, 1979). Estimates of parameter b ranged from 2.936 (A. hubbsi) to 3.696 (P. gillii), while estimates of parameter a ranged from 1.7 × 10−6 (P. gillii) to 1.9 × 10−5 (P. managuensis). Parameter b estimates were greater than three, consistent with allometric growth, with the exception of P. annectens, P. managuensis, and A. hubbsi, for which t-tests failed to reject the null hypothesis of isometric growth. Our results provide the first LWR information for five (71%) of these species and may prove useful for data imputation or estimating the biomass of poeciliid, cichlid, and atheriniform fishes in Central American rivers in the future.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Nadia Boulanger and Her Role in Polish Music – in the Light of Zygmunt Mycielski–s Writings Zygmunt Mycielski (1907–1987), a composer and writer on music, was one of the pupils of Nadia Boulanger (1887–1979). In his writings he often stressed the role which this eminent French teacher played in the development of a whole generation of Polish (and not only Polish) composers. Not only did Mycielski owe a lot to her personally, but he also clearly saw the significance of her teaching to the further fate of Polish music. He remained her friend, introduced her to Poland, and often mentioned both his education under her wings and the importance of her teaching. The article presents the figure and role of Nadia Boulanger in the light of the writings of Zygmunt Mycielski.

Abstract:

The distribution of adult Hydropsychidae and physicochemical variables at Mae Tao Creek, Mae Sot District, Tak Province, northern Thailand, were sampled bi-monthly from February to December 2011. Five sampling sites were selected along the creek. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, sulfate, nitrate-nitrogen, and orthophosphate did not vary significantly during the research period, and pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, and sulfate did not vary significantly among the sampling sites. A total of 1,065 male individuals were caught belonging to 5 genera and 20 species. Cheumatopsyche carmentis Malicky & Chantaramongkol 1997, Cheumatopsyche dhanikari Malicky 1979, Cheumatopsyche globosa Ulmer 1910, Cheumatopsyche lucida Ulmer 1907 and Potamyia flavata Banks 1934 were identified as the most common species of the research area. Pearson’s correlations were used to determine the relationships between water quality variables and the adult caddisfly faunas. Air temperature, turbidity, nitrate-nitrogen, and ammonia-nitrogen were strongly correlated only with the presence of adult caddisflies.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIn 2012, three architectural competitions were held as part of the strategic programme ‘Living Well, Growing Old’, launched by the Swedish government in 2010. The intention was to use the innovative quality of the architectural competition in order to conceive future-oriented built environments for the ageing Swedish society. In Sweden, several architectural competitions with a focus on space for dependent and frail older people have been organised over the past century. Architectural design has been incorporated into reforms for social care of older people. This study focuses on the relationship between architecture and socio-political visions in three architectural competitions, realised in 1907, 1948 and 1979. The study demonstrates that architectural competitions within this field are more than a list of functional and spatial requirements for architects to respect. Instead, they are socio-political statements that define spatial frameworks within an ideological view on how ethically to provide care for dependent and frail older people in a welfare regime.

Abstract:
Abstract After a brief sketch of the historical background, the mutual impact of Islam and constitutionalism is examined by looking closely at the process of constitution-making in the broad context of the constitutional politics of Iran between 1905 and 1911. The modification of modern constitutional concepts under the impact of Shiʿi Islam and through its custodians in the course of the reception of Western constitutionalism in this period is followed by an analysis of the impact of modern political ideas on Islam. The analysis is based on the texts of the Fundamental Law of 1906 and its 1907 Supplement, and on the contemporary tracts for and against constitutionalism from opposite Islamic viewpoints. Our detailed examination of these sources indicates no presumption that a constitution had to be based on Islam. Nor was there any notion of ‘the Islamic state,’ the slogan of the Islamic revolution of 1979. For the constitutionalists and anti-constitutionalist pamphleteers of the first decade of the twentieth century alike, the counterpart to the constitutional government was not the Islamic state but the autocratic monarchy of ‘the king of Islam.’

Although apparently accepted as part of the fiscal order until 1979, Margaret Thatcher's government was able to complete the dismantling of the bias in favour of earned income by 1984. This article examines the events and politics of the 1970s to explain the volte-face. The article initially charts the role of political prejudice against rentiers in maintaining higher taxes on unearned income in the context of 1970s economic turmoil and inflation. The article then considers the 1970s fiscal shift from the perspective of equity shareholdings, juxtaposing the use of tax and dividend restraint as a mechanism for control of investment capital with pressure for wider share ownership, particularly for employees. Finally, Avner Offer's theories on prudent financial behaviour are imported as a backdrop for the trend away from tax relief for long-term, illiquid savings towards market-driven incentives. Ultimately, the article detects a change of approach in both main political parties which in turn creates a more stable environment for future policy formation.

Abstract:
AbstractJamaica is prone to both earthquakes and hurricanes. The cities of Port Royal and Kingston respectively were destroyed by earthquakes in 1692 and 1907, whilst the island lies within the Caribbean hurricane belt with recent devastation being caused by a tropical depression in 1979 and Hurricane Allen in 1981.The Geological Survey of Jamaica has been actively involved in land use planning for many years. The recent contributions are briefly reviewed, particularly with respect to natural hazards such as landslips and flooding. The problems of preparing risk assessment maps from a weak data base are discussed. Preliminary Earthquake and Tropical Cyclone hazard maps which were prepared for the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation are presented as examples of the approach taken. The method, of necessity, was based on largely subjective assessments of ground materials and levels of risk. The preliminary maps were intended to provide general guidelines for planning and development and to prepare the way for further studies. The preparation of detailed engineering design guides was regarded as the logical development of this work and, to illustrate this, some initial results of a subsequent hydrological study of flood flow characteristics and flood prediction techniques are presented.

Abstract:
Diarrhea, especially that of infectious origin, is a common problem in feline medicine. However, identifying a causative agent is difficult in routine clinical practice due to the many pathogens that lead to non-specific clinical signs. Among the various gastrointestinal parasites, protozoa, such as Giardia duodenalis (Lambl, 1859) and Cryptosporidium spp. (Tyzzer, 1907), pose a great threat because of their pathogenicity, prevalence in domestic animals, and zoonotic potential. This study aimed to report the occurrence of intestinal protozoa, G. duodenalis, and Cryptosporidium spp., in cats from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Fecal samples and clinical and epidemiological data were obtained from 60 patients with diarrhea. Samples were subjected to DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the protozoa. Protozoa-positive samples were subjected to DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. PCR assays revealed that one sample (1.67 %) was positive for G. duodenalis, and four samples (6.67 %) contained Cryptosporidium spp. G. duodenalis assemblage B and Cryptosporidium felis (Iseki, 1979) were identified through amplicon DNA sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic analysis. This is the first report of C. felis and G. duodenalis (assemblage B) in cats in Mato Grosso do Sul, central-western Brazil.

Abstract:
AbstractA redefinition and taxonomic revision is given of the genus Lydda. Twenty-one species are attributed to this genus occurring in New Guinea and northern Australia. The zoraidine genera with short antennae are keyed and all Lydda species are keyed and redescribed with emphasis on the male and female genitalia. Four species are described as new: Lydda perlucida, L. guttata, L. cornuta and L. fusca; 16 species are transferred from Proutista to Lydda given 16 new combinations. P. awarensis Van Stalle, 1986 is synonymized with L. gemina Muir, 1913. Arfaka Distant, 1907 and Afakia Kirkaldy, 1909, former synonyms of Proutista are now considered as synonyms of Lydda. The Afrotropical species attributed to Lydda are transferred to Diostrombus, new subgenus Lyddastrombus, giving seven more new combinations. Proutista jezeki Dlabola, 1979 and P. jezeki Dlabola, 1981 are transferred to Diostrombus s. str., giving D. jezeki (Dlabola) comb. n. and D. adila (Dlabola) comb. n. A lectotype is selected for Lydda elongata, Lydda perkinsi, L. lutea, L. lurida, L. decisa, L. straminea, L. lumholtzi, L. australis, L. gemina, L. koebelei, L. calypso and Philadelpheia pandani. Diostrombus muiri nom. n. is proposed for D. cocos Muir, 1928, a secondary junior homonym of D. cocos (Muir, 1926) comb. n.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Opsiphanes Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Brassolini) is an exclusively Neotropical genus, occurring from Argentina to Mexico. Until the present study, Opsiphanes was considered to contain 14 species, 60 subspecies, and 38 synonyms. The considerable phenotypic variation of species and subspecies of the genus has affected the taxonomy of the group by causing the proliferation of several names that have been proposed to represent their diversity, taxa that have often not been adequately described and/or delimited. The present study analyzed information on the immature stages and morphology, with molecular data and distribution data, in order to provide revised taxonomic hypotheses for Opsiphanes species and subspecies. These analyses of approximately 5,500 specimens and all species known for the genus made it possible to define two groups: “cassiae” and “quiteria”. The “quiteria” group was subdivided into seven subgroups: “boisduvallii”, “camena”, “zelotes”, “sallei”, “quiteria”, “fabricii”, and “invirae”. The statuses of three species and two subespecies are reinstated: Opsiphanes badius Stichel, 1902 stat. rest., Opsiphanes quirinus Godman & Salvin, 1881 stat. rest., Opsiphanes merianae Stichel, 1902 stat. rest., Opsiphanes bogotanus castaneus Stichel, 1904 stat. rest. and Opsiphanes badius cauca Röber, 1906 stat. rest. Six subspecies are here treated as species: Opsiphanes mexicana Bristow, 1991 stat. nov., Opsiphanes zelus Stichel, 1908 stat. nov., Opsiphanes farrago Stichel, 1904 stat. nov., Opsiphanes barkeri Bristow, 1991 stat. nov., Opsiphanes caliensis Bristow, 1991 stat. nov., and Opsiphanes cuspidatus Stichel, 1904 stat. nov. One subjective synonym is treated as a valid subspecies: Opsiphanes invirae pernambucoensis Bristow, 1991 stat. rev. One species is treated as a subspecies: Opsiphanes cassiae tamarindi C. Felder & R. Felder, 1861 stat. nov. Eight new statuses are proposed: Opsiphanes cassiae incolumis Stichel, 1904 stat. nov., Opsiphanes cassiae tamarindi C. Felder & R. Seven subjective synonyms are reinstated: Opsiphanes crameri C. Felder & R. Felder, 1862 syn. rest. of Opsiphanes cassiae cassiae (Linnaeus, 1758); Opsiphanes tamarindi latifascia Rothschild, 1916 syn. rest. of Opsiphanes cassiae incolumis Stichel, 1904 stat. nov.; Opsiphanes erebus Röber, 1927 syn. rest. of Opsiphanes quiteria quirinalis Staudinger, 1887; Opsiphanes cassina aequatorialis Stichel, 1902 syn. rest., Opsiphanes invirae pseudophilon Fruhstorfer, 1907 syn. rest., Opsiphanes invirae remoliatus Fruhstorfer, 1907 syn. rest., and Opsiphanes invirae agasthenes Fruhstorfer, 1907 syn. rest. of Opsiphanes invirae invirae (Hübner, [1808]). Abstract:
Typically considered a coastal species in Great Britain, Juncus balticus Willd. also occurs inland as a native plant beside the Rivers Avon, Dulnain and Findhorn in NE Scotland (and beside the R. Lossie in the 19th Century). Here it is found at median altitude 290 m AOD (inter-quartile range, 249 - 341 m). It also occurs as a native at one inland loch-side, and was found beside another loch in the 19th Century. In total, J. balticus has been recorded beside inland rivers from 14 10 km grid squares. In its inland riverside habitat, J. balticus is overwhelmingly found within communities dominated by native plant taxa, primarily associated with infertile, moist to damp, weakly to moderately acid soils, with high levels of illumination. Few observers are familiar with seeing J. balticus at its inland sites, therefore it is possible that this species has been overlooked along other rivers and burns in NE Scotland, and perhaps elsewhere. The first record of J. balticus beside a road was in 1907, long before roads were widely treated with salt in the winter, but it was not until 1979 that a second roadside population was discovered. Roadside and trackside populations have now been found in 19 10 km grid squares. At most of these sites it is likely to be an accidental introduction. It is now more widespread on roadsides than along inland riversides. The isolated nature of the roadside populations indicates that there have been multiple independent colonisations. It is highly likely that additional roadside populations await discovery, and that further colonisation events will occur.

Abstract:
Abstract. The original tunnel valley theory was put forward by Ussing 1907. Its validity has, however, been doubted by most German geologists since then, especially because many so-called tunnel valleys are surprisingly wide (1 km or more). It was claimed that so wide tunnels or cavities under the ice were impossible. Since 1950, progress in glaciology (especially Nye 1952 and Shreve 1972) has caused a revival of the tunnel valley concept. Long and narrow ice tongues which have been postulated for North Germany by some researchers, according to Nye are only possible in mountainous terrain. On the other hand, Shreve's picture of the subgla-cial stream pattern matches precisely the known pattern of eskers and valley incisions in Denmark, Holstein, and Mecklenburg. Küster & Meyer (1979) and Ehlers & Linke (1989) interpret the buried valley incisions in northern Germany as eroded by subglacial streams. Until now, however, their large width has not been sufficiently explained. A group of Danish scientists including Ole Humlum has discussed this problem. A successive origin of the valleys appears to be most probable: during the winter with its reduced meltwater flow, the tunnel is narrowed by ice pressure. Therefore, it cannot carry the vastly increased amount of water during the spring, and a new tunnel has to be eroded, presumably partly into the substratum. Annual repetition of this process causes wide valley bottoms, only small parts of which were ever water-filled at any given time. It is shown that the morphology of the Danish tunnel valleys can be explained in every detail by such a sequence of events, and that no alternative theory can offer an equally satisfactory explanation.

Abstract:
The paper presents new experimental data and reveals the regular variability of the formation of density fluctuations, frost and fallen annual rings in mossy (Pinetum pleurozium) and ledum (Pinetum ledosum) pine forests. The main statistical characteristics of generalized tree-ring chronologies are analyzed, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the average, maximum and minimum width of annual rings depending on the type of forest are established. It has been experimentally established that in ledum pine forests the number of anomalies is 3.34 times greater than in mossy pine forests. There were 229 density fluctuations in mossy pine, 530 in ledum, frost damage – 28 and 159, fallen tree rings – 10 and 202, in compliance. The most unfavorable years, which were reflected in the radial growth of mossy pine forests, were 1979 and 1980; the maximum number of detected anomalies (91,4%) occurred in 1907, 1928, 1958, 1971, 1985, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1999, 2010 and 2017. The most unfavorable years, which were reflected in the radial growth of ledum pine forests, were 1906 and 1940 ; the maximum number of detected anomalies (89.7%) occurred in 1928, 1937, 1944, 1946, 1963, 1965, 1974, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1991, 2000 and 2016. There are no coincidences of the formation of anomalies and minima of growth in mossy and ledum pine forests, as far as the degree of responses to changes in external conditions in these types of forests is different. The conducted studies have shown that the structure of annual rings of common pine can be considered as a reflection of the features of seasonal growth of trees, while the formation of anomalies of the structure is largely determined by soil-hydrological conditions of growth.

Abstract:
The history of Iran is of great importance to researchers and historians due to its sensitive location on the Arabian Gulf and its riches that were the focus of attention of major countries.Among the personalities who played a distinguished role on the Iranian political arena was Diaa al-Din Tabatabaei, who lived in three different stages of modern and contemporary Iranian history, the period of the Qajar state and its fall in 1925 AD, and the Pahlavi state, which was characterized by two different eras, the reign of Reza Shah 1926-1941 AD, and was succeeded by his son, Muhammad Reza. Pahlavi 1941-1979 AD, which completes an era with special features, whether with regard to Iran's internal situation or its external relations.Diaa al-Din was born in the city of Shiraz in 1888 AD from an Alawite religious family. His father worked as a preacher and preacher in the court of the Iranian Crown Prince Mozaffar al-Din Shah (1853-1907 AD). It is distinguished by its scathing articles against Iranian officials because of the bad conditions in which Iran lived, and it became clear from the beginning that Tabatabai leaned towards the British side because he believed that Iran would not advance economically and scientifically except through this cooperation. The first military coup in the history of the Middle East took place in February 1921 AD, but the political rivalry between Reza Khan and Diaa al-Din Tabatabaei eventually led to Reza Khan taking control of Iran and Diaa al-Din leaving Iran in June 1921 AD. Diaa al-Din remained in exile, roaming between Europe and Palestine Until 1943 AD, when he returned to Iran after the Allied forces forced Reza Shah to step down from power in 1941 AD because of his siding with the German side in World War II (1939-1945 AD), and the return of Zia al-Din witnessed a revival of right-wing forces in the face of the Tudeh Communist Party, and this is what we will control The light in our research, and Dia Al-Din's political life ended after his arrest in 1946 AD, to begin the stage of political retirement for Dia Al-Din, which lasted until his death in 1969 AD 0

DRONEN, NORMAN O., and CHARLES K. BLEND. "Observations on the Parorchis acanthus complex (Philophthalmidae: Parorchiinae) with the description of three new species of Parorchis Nicoll, 1907 and the replacement of the preoccupied junior homonym Paratrema Dronen & Badley, 1979 with Stenomesotrema nomen novum." Zootaxa 1843, no. 1 (August 6, 2008): 1. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.1843.1.1.

Abstract:
A brief history of the genus Parorchis Nicoll, 1907 (Philophthalmidae: Parorchiinae) is provided along with the description of 3 new species: Parorchis catoptrophori n. sp., distinguished by a bipartite pharynx with a larger, anterior, muscular primary pharynx, followed by a smaller posterior nonmuscular secondary part composed of 2 smaller posterior extensions; Parorchis longivesiculus n. sp., distinguished by an external seminal vesicle that overreaches the acetabulum posteriorly, extending into the hindbody to about midway between the testes and the acetabulum; and Parorchis ralli n. sp., distinguished by an external seminal vesicle, the posterior third of which is tubular and coiled. The preoccupied junior homonym Paratrema Dronen & Badley, 1979 (Parorchiinae) is replaced by Stenomesotrema nomen novum, and a rediagnosis of the genus is given wherein Stenomesotrema numenii n. comb. is assigned as the type species in the genus, and Stenomesotrema asiaticus n. comb. is proposed as a second species in the genus. Species of Parorchis are divided into 2 basic body types. The first type contains those species with a barbell-like or hourglass body shape, a rudimentary head collar, symmetrical to tandem testes, 2 rows of corner spines on the head collar, a preequatorial acetabulum, and a forebody that is wider than the hindbody. The second body type, called the “Parorchis body type”, contains those species with a pyriform body shape, a well-developed head collar, symmetrical testes, a single continuous row of circumoral spines on the head collar, and an equatorial acetabulum. There appears to be 2 subtypes of the Parorchis body type: subtype 1 containing those species possessing smooth to slightly irregular testes (not deeply lobed) and an esophagus lacking diverticuli; and subtype 2 containing those species having irregular and deeply lobed testes and an esophagus possessing lateral diverticuli. A comparative analysis of museum-deposited specimens of P. acanthus revealed as many as 9 possible additional species of Parorchis. This suggests potential problems in using measurements of structures alone without differences in additional corroborating specific features to separate species of Parorchis. Along with measurements, the number and size of spines on the circumoral collar, the presence or absence of a prepharynx, an intertesticular space, and esophageal diverticula as well as the extent of the posttesticular space, the length of the metraterm, egg size and the ratios of the width of the oral sucker to the width of the acetabulum and the width of the pharynx to the width of the oral sucker appear useful in distinguishing species of Parorchis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background. А history of the development of the human community is at the same time a history of the relationship between men and women, their role in society, in formation of mindset, development of science, technology and art. A woman’s path to the recognition of her merits is a struggle for equality and inclusion in all sectors of public life. Originated with particular urgency in the twentieth century, this set of problems gave impetus to the study of the female phenomenon in the sociocultural space. In this context, the disclosure of the direct contribution of talented women to art and their influence on its development has become of special relevance. The purpose of the article is to summarize segmental of information that highlights the contribution of women to the treasury of world art, their creative and inspiring power. Analytical, historical-biographical and comparative studying methods were applied to reveal the gender relationships in art and the role of woman in them as well as in the sociocultural space in general. The results from this study present a panorama of gifted women from the world of art and music who paved the way for future generations. Among them are: A. Gentileschi (1593–1653), who was the first woman admitted to The Florence Academy of Art; M. Vigee Le Brun (1755–1842), who painted portraits of the French aristocracy and later became a confidant of Marie-Antoinette; B. Morisot (1841–1895), who was accepted by the impressionists in their circle and repeatedly exhibited her works in the Paris Salon; F. Caccini (1587–1640), who went down in history as an Italian composer, teacher, harpsichordist, author of ballets and music for court theater performances; J. Kinkel (1810–1858) – the first female choral director in Germany, who published books about musical education, composed songs on poems of famous poets, as well as on her own texts; F. Mendelssohn (1805–1847) – German singer, pianist and composer, author of cantatas, vocal miniatures of organ preludes, piano pieces; R. Clark (1886–1979) – British viola player and composer who created trio, quartets, compositions for solo instruments, songs on poems of English poets; L. Boulanger (1893–1918) became the first woman to receive Grand Prix de Rome; R. Tsekhlin (1926–2007) – German harpsichordist, composer and teacher who successfully combined the composition of symphonies, concerts, choral and vocal opuses, operas, ballets, music for theatrical productions and cinema with active performing and teaching activities, and many others. The article emphasise the contribution of women-composers, writers, poetesses to the treasury of world literature and art. Among the composers in this row is S. Gubaidulina (1931), who has about 30 prizes and awards. She wrote music for 17 films and her works are being performed by famous musicians around the world. The glory of Ukrainian music is L. Dychko (1939) – the author of operas, oratorios, cantatas, symphonies, choral concertos, ballets, piano works, romances, film music. The broad famous are the French writers: S.-G. Colette (1873–1954), to which the films were devoted, the performances based on her novels are going all over the world, her lyrics are being studied in the literature departments. She was the President of the Goncourt Academy, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, a square in the center of Paris is named after her. Also, creativity by her compatriot, L. de Vilmorin (1902–1969), on whose poems С. Arrieu, G. Auric, F. Poulenc wrote vocal miniatures, is beloved and recognized as in France as and widely abroad. The article denotes a circle of women who combined the position of a selfsufficient creator and a muse for their companion. M. Verevkina (1860–1938) – a Russian artist, a representative of expressionism in painting, not only helped shape the aesthetic views of her husband A. Yavlensky, contributing to his art education, but for a long time “left the stage” for to not compete with him and help him develop his talent fully. Furthermore, she managed to anticipate many of the discoveries as for the use of light that are associated with the names of H. Matisse, A. Derain and other French fauvist. F. Kahlo (1907–1954), a Mexican artist, was a strict critic and supporter for her husband D. Rivera, led his business, was frequently depicted in his frescoes. C. Schumann (1819–1896) was a committed promoter of R. Schumann’s creativity. She performed his music even when he was not yet recognized by public. She included his compositions in the repertoire of her students after the composer lost his ability to play due to the illness of the hands. She herself performed his works, making R. Schumann famous across Europe. In addition, Clara took care of the welfare of the family – the main source of finance was income from her concerts. The article indicates the growing interest of the twentieth century composers to the poems of female poets. Among them M. Debord-Valmore (1786–1859) – a French poetess, about whom S. Zweig, P. Verlaine and L. Aragon wrote their essays, and her poems were set to music by C. Franck, G. Bizet and R. Ahn; R. Auslender (1901–1988) is a German poetess, a native of Ukraine (Chernovtsy city), author of more than 20 collections, her lyrics were used by an American woman-composer E. Alexander to write “Three Songs” and by German composer G. Grosse-Schware who wrote four pieces for the choir; I. Bachmann (1926–1973) – the winner of three major Austrian awards, author of the libretto for the ballet “Idiot” and opera “The Prince of Hombur”. The composer H. W. Henze, in turn, created music for the play “Cicadas” by I. Bachmann. On this basis, we conclude that women not only successfully engaged in painting, wrote poems and novels, composed music, opened «locked doors», destroyed established stereotypes but were a powerful source of inspiration. Combining the roles of the creator and muse, they helped men reach the greatest heights. Toward the twentieth century, the role of the fair sex representatives in the world of art increased and strengthened significantly, which led Western European culture to a new round of its evolution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Cambodia, located in continental Southeast Asia, is renowned for its rich and ancient architectural art. One of its most notable treasures is the archaeological site Angkor Wat, which holds the distinction of being a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. However, Cambodia is also a developing country and a biodiversity hotspot (Myers et al. 2000, Sodhi et al. 2010). Regrettably, Cambodia's tragic and violent history has severely impacted the understanding of its biodiversity, particularly its plant life. This was depicted by Zizka et al. (2021), in one of their figures illustrating the significant decline in the number of recorded species occurrences in Cambodia between 1970 and 1992. This period includes the civil war from 1975 to 1979, which marked one of the most devastating genocides in human history. France and Cambodia share a long history of relations and collaboration. The French presence in Cambodia dates back to 1863 when Cambodia became a French protectorate. It later became part of French Indochina in 1887, alongside other French colonies and protectorates, such as Laos, Tonkin, Annam, Cochinchina, and Guangzhouwan in China. This French presence not only facilitated the "rediscovery" of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom by Henri Mouhot, a French naturalist, botanist, and entomologist, but also contributed to the collection of Cambodia's biodiversity. The protectorate status for Cambodia ended in 1949, and it declared its independence in 1953. During the same period, the "General Flora of Indo-China" (Gagnepain et al. 1907) began its publication in 1907 and continued until 1951 by French editors. In 1960, this flora was reinitiated as the "Flora of Cambodia, Laos, and Viêt-Nam". Since 2013, it is jointly edited by the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh. The Flora of Cambodia project arose from a simple question: why is the flora still managed jointly with Laos and Viêt-Nam? Since the three countries have been independent since 1954, their respective floras should be separate and published independently. The project's initial phase involves compiling an up-to-date understanding of Cambodia's plant life, including an inventory of collections housed at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and accessible Cambodian floristic data online through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and other sources (Joyce et al. 2020). The ultimate goal is to produce a comprehensive flora of Cambodia. In the short term, the project aims to provide an open and curated checklist of vascular plants of Cambodia, in multiple languages, including Khmer and freely available following Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable (FAIR) principles (Wilkinson et al. 2016). This endeavor seeks to empower both Khmer botanists and the broader local community, allowing them to reclaim and cherish their intrinsic knowledge of native plants. Although still in its early stages, this project aims to further enhance the strong collaboration between France and Cambodia while being FAIR and Collective benefit, Authority to control, Responsability, Ethics (CARE) (Carroll et al. 2020).

Abstract:
In this paper, we examine the origins and the history of the hypothesis for an influence of tidal forces on volcanic activity. We believe that exploring this subject through a historical perspective may help geoscientists gain new insights in a field of research so closely connected with the contemporary scientific debate and often erroneously considered as a totally separated niche topic. The idea of an influence of the Moon and Sun on magmatic processes dates back to the Hellenistic world. However, it was only since the late 19th century, with the establishment of volcano observatories at Mt. Etna and Vesuvius allowing a systematic collection of observations with modern methods, that the “tidal controversy” opened one of the longest and most important debates in Earth Science. At the beginning of the 20th century, the controversy assumed a much more general significance, as the debate around the tidal influence on volcanism developed around the formulation of the first modern theories on the origins of volcanism, the structure of the Earth’s interior and the mechanisms for continental drift. During the same period, the first experimental evidence for the existence of the Earth tides by Hecker (Beobachtungen an Horizontalpendeln über die Deformation des Erdkörpers unter dem Einfluss von Sonne und MondVeröffentlichung des Königl, 1907, 32), and the Chamberlin–Moulton planetesimal hypothesis (proposed in 1905 by geologist Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin and astronomer Forest Ray Moulton) about the “tidal” origin of the Solar System, influenced and stimulated new researches on volcano-tides interactions, such as the first description of the “lava tide” at the Kilauea volcano by Thomas Augustus Jaggar in 1924. Surprisingly, this phase of gradual acceptance of the tidal hypothesis was followed by a period of lapse between 1930 to late 1960. A new era of stimulating and interesting speculations opened at the beginning of the seventies of the 20th century thanks to the discovery of the moonquakes revealed by the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package. A few years later, in 1979, the intense volcanism on the Jupiter’s moon Io, discovered by the Voyager 1 mission, was explained by the tidal heating produced by the Io’s orbital eccentricity. In the last part of the paper, we discuss the major advances over the last decades and the new frontiers of this research topic, which traditionally bears on interdisciplinary contributions (e.g., from geosciences, physics, astronomy). We conclude that the present-day debate around the environmental crisis, characterized by a large collection of interconnected variables, stimulated a new field of research around the complex mechanisms of mutual interactions among orbital factors, Milankovitch Cycles, climate changes and volcanism.

Abstract:
From 1925-1929, the popular social movement of "Emperor" Flor Intrencherado in Western Visayas gained notoriety within the press local. The Iloilo-based local newspaper, the Makinaugalingon, extensively covered the movement in their press release articles. The newspaper, unsurprisingly, recreated a picture of Intrencherado and his followers in a language of ridicule, dismissing the movement and identifying its leader as a lunatic and insane despite the locality of the press. This, in turn, marginalized the movement, its goals, and objectives, as well as the leader, "Emperor" Flor Intrencherado. The goal of this study is to present, review, and analyze the different representations the local press created with the “infamous” peasant movement and give the context in which similar social movements could be understood.
