Abstract:

Rev. Lett. 55,1669(1985)] de Princeton e o Torus de Irvine [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56,835(1986)]

Lai, Tsz Yuen. "Investigation on logic of the real: Lautman, Deleuze, Badiou and transcendental materialism." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/503.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to reconfigure 'materialism' against the contemporary context of philosophy. By carrying out a meta-philosophical investigation on the logical schemas, philosophical operations and deployments of the major philosophical projects of Albert Lautman (1908-1944), Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), and Alain Badiou (1937- ), i.e., Lautman's philosophy of mathematics (especially the dialectic governing his theory of 'mathematical genesis'), Deleuze's philosophy of difference (especially the logic of event and metamorphosis underlying the 'Deleuzian genesis' extracted from Chapter IV and V of Difference and Repetition), and Badiou's mathematical ontology (especially the fundamental logical schema of his mature ontology presented in Being and Event), this dissertation attempts to show how the works of these three philosophers are contributive to the aforementioned task of the reconfiguration of materialist philosophy. In terms of the problematics of 'formalization of the real', the 'transcendental methodology', and the 'immanent principle' of reality shared by all these three philosophical projects, I propose that their works can be defined as a particular type of materialist philosophy that I call 'transcendental materialism'; and this 'transcendental materialism', in turn, ought to be comprehended according to a modern reading of Platonism, i.e., the non-orthodox re-articulation of Platonic philosophy comprised of Lautman's unorthodox-realist Platonism, Deleuze's materialism as overturned Platonism, and Badiou's materialism with the Platonic Idea. I conclude that Lautman, Deleuze, and Badiou are three philosophers of 'transcendental materialism' knotted by this modern Platonism. On the strength of the 'transcendental materialism' constituted in view of the investigation presented by this dissertation, I intend to show that Lautman's philosophy of mathematics offers the proper perspective or the 'condition' for a genuine comprehension of Deleuze's major philosophical project in the late 1960s; on the basis of this genuine comprehension, Deleuze's philosophical project, which concentrates in the study of the transcendental logic of the real instead of providing empirical knowledge of sensible objects and material entities, ought to be categorized as 'transcendental materialism', a category that is also competent to define Badiou's philosophical project, i.e., 'a materialism without object/matter'; and therefore, the philosophical demarcation within contemporary materialist philosophy ought not to be simply portrayed as 'Badiou vs. Deleuze', 'dialectical materialism vs. vitalist materialism'. The genuine philosophical demarcation within materialism today is 'Idea against Matter'. 'Transcendental materialism' is 'a materialism with the Idea' or 'a materialism of the Idea' which is against the 'naïve materialism' or the 'metaphysics of the Matter'. In case transcendental materialism might have been conceived as a new 'metaphysics', it is the metaphysics of the imperceptible, the inexistent, and the inconsistent. The 'material reality', after 'transcendental materialism', is 'non-All'. Concerning the far more complicated confrontations between different trends of contemporary materialist/realist philosophy, my proposal of constituting the 'transcendental materialism' can be considered as an attempt to reconfigure the current debates on materialist philosophy: to reorganize the dialogues, for instance, between Badiou and his opponents -- 'object-oriented-ontology', 'speculative realism', and 'non-philosophy'; to integrate Quentin Meillassoux's project into transcendental materialism in terms of their shared 'transcendental methodology'; and, most importantly, to 'radicalize' materialist/realist philosophy towards a theory of practice.

Zielinski, Agata. Paris 1, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA010684.

Full text
Abstract:
Taking the enigma of the world; seriously - according to the wording of Husserl - does not leave the phenomenological process unscathed. Merleau-ponty and levinas, who followed Husserl's footsteps, are both representative of this movement. Our purpose is to demonstrate how both authors are in part faithful to Husserl's intuition when they reproduced some motions which are distinctive of phenomenology and yet how the question of the transcendance from the world led them to the limits other than the transcendantal sphere. The world as a phenomenological problem brought them to the limits of phenomenology ; (Merleau-Ponty). This is in fact where corporeity meets otherness. The body and the other are the things themselves ; to which the world may come back, according to a reduction process which inverts the direction of the constitution. The world is both constituting and constituted ; (levinas). This turning point is marked by a converging review of the solipsism ; found in the fifth cartesian meditation. The question of the world which belongs to the philosophical history inherited by both authors (1st part) becomes a description of being in the world ; and that of corporeity (2nd part). It shows differences between the two authors, in particular as regards the new meaning given to transcendance in immanence ; i. E. A meaning of indeterminism. For Merleau-Ponty, there is no transcendance out of the world whereas, for levinas, transcendance cannot be given within the limits of the world in order to account for the incommensurable alterity of the other. The enigma of the world ; is thus coupled with the mystery of the other (3rd part). The question of the connection between the subject and the other in the world then takes the shape of the responsability to the other and the world. From the enigma of the evidence of the world, we come to the complexity of the common world as its reduction opens up ethical and political dimensions

Abstract: This work introduces and puts into practice the category of the third state as a tool for reflection in the analysis of representative texts by João Guimarães Rosa. When considering the narrative in a traditional perspective, I believe that the conflict initially proposed to set the plot in motion is the first state, while the solution of the conflict within the expectation created by the first state would result in what I have termed the second state. I assume it is possible to refer to the first and second states even when the composition of the narrative can be said to put the conflict in motion, in a metalinguistic arc. Therefore, the third state forms, together with the first and second ones, a circular triangle, from which the initial conflict is disestablished in such a way as to relocate the resolution/denouement. In other words, the expectations are subverted and the text, in its form and content, updates the conflict. In that perspective, I make use of Gilles Deleuze's considerations about the rhizome and the current/virtual dualism, concluding that the third state is a rhizomatic solution, as it implies multiple possibilities of "becoming", which end up subverting certain preconceived notions and establishing new and unpredictable shortcuts, capable of subverting the expectation that the plot may raise at first. Concomitantly with the reflections on the idea of the rhizome and the current/virtual dualism, I aim at relating the third state to the fantastic tradition, departing from the reflexive character proposed by fantastic narratives when they confront the character and a phenomenon that is not appropriated through rational action only. In dealing with the fantastic tradition what matters, above all, is the idea of a fantastic encounter, that is, what happens between the character and the phenomenon and allows action in the tale. In the same way it is relevant to establish the boundaries of the fantastic discourse in relation to the work of Guimarães Rosa, once the immediate reference of that discourse is the rational world, even from a perspective of negation. Such an opposition does not occur in the work of Guimarães Rosa, once it is not possible to think of a polarized relation with reason, but of the configuration of a fictional world in which reason is already an effect of subversion, as it does not work as a basis for the narratives. In fantastic narratives, the encounter between the phenomenon and the character results, on both sides, in a transformation of "becoming", so that the strange and irrational element becomes part of the character and, later, in the denouement, part of the world to which they belong. If in traditional fantastic narratives the phenomenon is a disturbing element with threatening and potentially destructive dimensions, and it is the character's role to subvert that determination, in Guimarães Rosa, the element - the third state - that incorporates itself so as to change the logic of the character's experience in the world has an intensely rhizomatic nature, as it does not start or end, it is always in the middle, in between things, inter-being, intermezzo (DELEUZE & GUATTARRI, 1995, p. 37). The third state is thus, a middle power, as it is neither at the beginning nor at the end

Abstract:

The 1930s represented a new phase in the history of Brazil. The Revolution of 1930 ended the First Republic, which lasted for exactly 41 years (1889- 1930). Deserves to be emphasized the international environment of the period, where a severe economic crisis shakes the U.S. and European countries, raising questions about the functionality of democratic institutions, increasing emergence of strong states, guided by a more interventionist stance, whether in the social structure as in economics. Within this perspective, in Brazil, the new ruling elites linked to Getúlio Vargas, govern the country in the midst of a lot of events. In Brazil, we have witnessed an era of true boiling doctrinal ideologies and actions moving the national intelligentsia. The country witnessing the rise of various movements: political, Catholics, social, etc. At this time the rise of PCB (Brazilian Communist Party), the rise of AIB (Brazilian Integralist Action), as well as the consolidation of LEC (Catholic Electoral League) occurs. The Catholic movement, represented by different intellectual figures, maintains an eminently conservative and traditionalist wing, which will see its skyline early signs and protests to come to originate in the country - with more force, from the second half of the 1940s - the progressive and modernist Catholicism, inspired by the integral humanism. One of the major intellectual figures of the period representing the state of São Paulo is Plínio Corrêa de Oliveira. Lawyer and devout Catholic, and son of a family of royalist and ultramontane training, he represents through his thought and political action the Catholic conservative strand. Thus, the goal of this dissertation is to analyze the trajectory of Plínio Corrêa de Oliveira in this context. Thought and action, as a Catholic leader and political leader in the Catholic Electoral League and later as Deputy Constituency, as well as your performance in the journal 'O Legionário' and also as President of the Archdiocesan Board of Catholic Action of the State of São Paulo. To carry out this work will be analyzed his articles published in newspapers, in addition to his books, speeches and interviews.

Abstract:
This work analyses the ontological vindication of motion towardsMerleau-Ponty and Deleuze’s philosophies. By “ontological vindication” weunderstand, firstly, that motion is an absolute philosophical subject before anyconsideration of the special sciences, and secondly, that this perspectiveexplains motion in its being’s dimension, that is to say motion constitutesreality creating space and time conditions without being subsumed to them.Throughout History, the philosophical importance of motion has beenambivalent, it has possessed a fundamental philosophical meaning at the sametime it has suffered and surprising disdain. Aristotle has found motion in theinnerness of things, proclaiming its ontological dimension and placing it in theheart of nature. Nevertheless, modern science, in search of nature’s domain, replaces the ontological value of motion with a geometrical model thatannihilates all processuality in the phenomenon. An ontological vindicationdesires to recover the idea of motion-process in the heart of reality, but withoutvindicate any aristotelianism. Thanks to Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze, we areable to propose an ontological motion beyond the Aristotelian categories andthe anthropomorphic models, which makes possible a meditation aboutmobility in itself and which is suitable to a cosmological philosophy. This workalso contributes to the studies between Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze, whoseliterature is barely absent and reduced to specials fields. On the contrary, wepropose an approach concerning to their ontological projects and, in particular, concerning to the question of motion

Lorelle, Paula. Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040193.

Full text
Abstract:
A new idea of reason was born with phenomenology. Beyond the opposition between rationalism andirrationalism, and against its Kantian reduction to a faculty, reason is redefined in the light of the experiencethat it enables to describe. But the difficulty arises when we attempt to reach the rationality of the sensibleexperience itself, in its own irreducibility to the demands of reason - in its irreducible peculiarity, complexity, lack and indetermination. Under which conditions can we think a logic of the sensible without betrayingsensibility or compromising reason? Husserl’s project of a “logic-of-the-world” requires, in its understandingas in its renewal, a reevaluation of the concepts of “reason” and “sensibility”. This dissertation consists in acritical study of these concepts, from these two main moments of their unfolding: their Husserlian inaugurationand their Levinassian radicalization. From a historical point of view, this choice enables us to assess thisphenomenological extension of reason - from an intellectual conception of sensibility in Husserl, to itsLevinassian depth. From a problematical point of view, this choice enables us to lead the problem to its finalterms, where the sensible is not made of meaning anymore, but appears in its very irrationality - whensensibility is not the perceptive grasp of an identity, but an affective exposure to otherness. Thought in itsfundamental equivocity, sensibility must be the place of a renewed challenge of reason, the critical principle ofthe rationality used by its description
