Abstract:
Dr Stefan Szuman as a doctor in the German army (1914–1919). Biographical contribution The author reconstructs the biography of the Polish doctor, Dr Stefan Szuman (1889–1972), later a professor at Jagiellonian University (1928–1961) during his period in the German army (1914–1919). S. Szuman, who acquired the state right to perform the profession of doctor in the German Reich on 7 September 1914, as well as the level of medical doctor on 23 December 1914 at the Faculty of Medicine in the Ludwik Maximilian University of Munich, formally served in the German army in the years 1914–1919. He served as a military doctor on the eastern front in the fight against Russia (from January 1915 until April 1916), firstly in Mazovia and Kujawy, then in Volhynia. Later he served on the western front – from April 1916 until December 1917, on the border between France and Belgium. During the night of 30 November and 1 December 1917 he was heavily wounded in the leg during the Battle of Cambrai in the Nord-Pas-de- Calais region near Raillencourt-Sainte-Olle, next to Cambrai and Bouchain. For his service in the German army, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class medal (at the turn of 1917/1918). After his recovery in Aachen and Torun, he was transferred to serve in the military hospital in the citadel in Hannover (from May until December 1918). After 9 December 1918, he returned to Torun, where he stayed until 17 May 1919, working as a garrison doctor in the clinic of his father – Dr Leon Szuman, still formally an officer in the German army until 19 March 1919 as a citizen of Germany. On 20 May 1919, he was accepted into the Polish Army at the rank of captain in Torun, which was still inside the German partition. On 31 May 1919, S. Szuman illegally crossed the Polish-German border near Torun and succeeded in reaching Wielkopolska.

Abstract:
The article investigates the issue of poetic manifestations of Christian worldview in S. A. Yesenin’s poetry in the 1910s. The analysis of selected poems is performed by means of ethnopoetics relevant for modern literary studies. The author of the article investigates the theoretical treatise “Maria’s Keys” as a work characteristic of the aforementioned period and of the poet’s creative method. The article treats the influence of religious folk poetry on the content and form of Yesenin’s verse. It investigates the way folk tales, legends and spiritual songs influenced Yesenin’s poetry. The article shows that Yesenin’s poems abound in such concepts as generosity, benevolence to the poor, belief in the reality of miracles. The lyrical hero of Yesenin’s poems is described through the prism of such concepts as pilgrimage, sin, repentance. The spatial, temporal, and thematic characteristics of Yesenin’s poems of the aforementioned period are mystery-related. Yesenin’s poems of 1918–1919 abound in motifs of death and resurrection. The author of the article maintains that it is not only feasible but also necessary to further investigate the motifs of folk Christianity characteristic of Yesenin’s works of the 1910s.

Abstract:
In this paper I wish to trace some connections between Donald Davidson's work (1917-2003) and two major representatives of the classical pragmatist movement: Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) and William James (1842-1910). I will start with a basic characterization of classical pragmatism; then, I shall examine certain conceptions in Peirce's and James' pragmatism, in order to establish affinities with Davidson´s thought. Finally, and bearing in mind the previous con-nections, I will reflect briefly on the relevance –often unrecognized- of classical pragmatist ideas in the context of contemporary philosophi-cal discussions.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation focuses on the notion of “gesture” as a somatic manifestation of psychological experience. This view of movement was elaborated by late 19th-century psychologists, who gave up the metaphysical notion of the soul in favor of neuro-physiological approaches to behavior. My study shows how the new scientific discourse penetrated into a broader cultural sphere, generating wide interest in the question how the body participates in and reflects affective and cognitive processes. I examine the modes of recording, representing and interpreting body movement as “expressive.” Based on archival materials and periodicals, I chart out avenues by which the ideas and methods of physiological psychology reached artists and writers – a task, which involves evaluating institutional practices and cultural-political trends that promoted interdisciplinary engagements. Ultimately, my study demonstrates how scientific discourse transformed techniques of film acting, prompted film industries’ inquiries into spectators’ physical reactions, and spurred literary scholars’ investigations of poets’ intonation and body movement. Yet, rather than positing the direct influence of science, I attend to a variety of ways in which writers and artists reinterpreted, defamiliarized and resisted the positivist outlook brought forward by physiological psychology. In Chapter 1, I show how Viktor Shklovskii drew on William James’s theory of the corporeal experience of emotion and Wilhelm Wundt’s ideas on the gestural origin of language to discuss Russian Futurist poetry as a “ballet for the organs of speech.” Chapter 2 analyzes Boris Eikhenbaum’s essays on poetic declamation by placing them in the context of the Petrograd Institute of the Living Word. In this organization, Russian Formalists worked alongside speech therapists and psychologists, using parlograph records of poetry performances. I compare their methods of registering poetic intonations to similar endeavors by American phoneticians Edward Scripture and R.H. Stetson. Chapter 3 traces the origins of Lev Kuleshov’s system of film actors’ training, arguing that his ideas emerged at the juncture of avant-garde theater, Pavlovian reflexology, and labor efficiency movement. Chapter 4 considers psycho-physiological approaches to film spectatorship, focusing on American and Soviet efforts to assess the emotional responses of filmgoers by photographing their facial reactions and registering changes in their vital signs.

Abstract:
This study centers around Italian cinema and proposes to describe the prolific and complex connections that developed between 19th century painting (European and mostly Italian) and the Italian films from 1905 (La Presa di Roma, Alberini) to 1920 (La Serpe, Roberti). From the historical inspiration to the dive melodramas, from the enthusiastic portrayal of History to the lyricism of passionate love, a pictorial effect haunts these cinematographic images in which can be found « the seed of a possible painting » (Eric Rohmer). Therefore, one needs to reflect on what cinema and painting share, following the iconographical study of figurative (gestures, postures, scenery, props) and formal elements (composition, frame, field size, editing) that lead to the question of the styles that the cinema prolongs and alters : neoclassicism, academism, orientalism, pre-Raphaelitism, symbolism, Art Nouveau. These aesthetic ideas allow for a convergence between the history of art and the history of cinema, which opens the question of the images' survival. At a time when 19th century figurative painting was being replaced by abstract art, it persisted and survived in cinema. In return, Italian cinema of the 1910s drew part of its vitality from pictorial material that already belonged to the past. Thus, this research brings to light a series of questions that allow for both a revisitation of a rarely studied period of the history of Italian cinema and more generally to reflect upon the relationship between cinema and other artforms

The main purpose of this paper is the first year of publication of the biobibliographic studies, prepared by Geraldo Ferraz (1905-1979) and Patrícia Galvão (1910-1962) in the literary supplement of the Diário de S. Paulo, entitled Anthology of foreign literature, published between November 24, 1946 to November 28, 1948. This research aimed to investigate a sampling of 9 articles that point to a historical moment of tension between the review, whose anecdotal-biographical traits were common in the field of journalism when it comes to literary criticism in the 1940’s, and specialized criticism, most commonly found within the academy. The hypothesis we propose is that this critique is articulated in three strands: firstly, the one whose discursive dominance resides in the sheer dissemination of the work and the author, passing through an intermediary model between review and critical academic commentary, and finally, the third model in which the specialized critical discourse prevails, taking advantage of an aesthetic-literary nature. For this, this study was structured based on the qualitative research to describe, to understand and to explain the forces that stress the critical project developed by the couple of organizers of the column. In this sense, the essay by Flora Süssekind (2002), Rodapés, tratados e ensaios, a formação da crítica brasileira moderna, is the starting point of this research, as well as the works developed by Afrânio Coutinho (1987, 2001, 2004) to understand the phenomenon of Brazilian literary criticism in the 1940s. In addition to contributing to the study of Brazilian literature, this project aims to retrieve the articles published in the column and, thus, to observe how the work of the literary critic was being performed in a period in which systematic academic criticism was being forged as the mainstream

Platynosomum illiciens (Braun 1901) Kossack, 1910, considered by some authors as synonymy of Platynosomum fastosum and Platynosomum concinnum, is the most important trematode found in cats of tropical and subtropical areas, and its prevalence can reach up to 85%. In Brazil it was already found at different localities, but State of Rio de Janeiro is where it presents a higher prevalence and could be found in 56% of the cats. Due to the P. illiciens diagnosis is being done exclusively through the discovery of eggs of this parasite by fecal examination, and this is considered being little sensible, it is necessary the study of complementary tools of diagnosis for the parasite and the hepatic alterations possibly determined by this parasite. Therefore, radiology, ultrasound and computed tomography were used for the evaluation of alterations caused by P. illiciens in order to evidence alterations that aid in the diagnosis of this parasitosis or even to evidenced major alterations caused by the platynosomiasis. A triage was accomplished with 13 animals searching for the presence of P. illiciens eggs in feces. Eight positive cats (61.54%) were found, and submitted to the proposed image diagnosis technics, except for tomography which only seven animals were submitted. The radiologic examination evidenced five animals with enlargement of the liver; one animal was with a normal liver and in two animals the hepatic limits were not observed through the x-ray. In ultrasound scanning, six animals was identified hepatomegaly and in regard of the hepatic parenchyma only one animal presented this parameter altered. All the animals presented normal hepatic vessels and in regard to the biliary ducts, only two animals presented this parameter increased. Besides, the presence of the parasite can be evidenced in one animal during the accomplishment of the ultrasound scanning. In tomography, six cats were observed with enlargement of the liver and in regard to the other findings the results were descriptive. Among the obtained results, it can be concluded that the radiologic study just evaluate the liver size in a restricted way. The ultrasound scanning and computed tomography were considered good diagnostic tools, evaluating with clarity the hepatic size, the hepatic parenchyma, the configuration and width of biliary ducts, the gall bladder and the hepatic vessels.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This is the second of two chapters that examine ways Stein’s increasingly experimental writings during the first three decades of the twentieth century gradually work through dominant early twentieth-century genders, loosening up rigid constructs of masculinity she encountered in Otto Weininger’s misogynist Sex and Character. Chapter Three argues that her innovative writings from the 1910’s and 1920’s—such as the long poems “Lifting Belly” and “Patriarchal Poetry” (1927)—use Toklas’s feminine positioning to establish Stein’s masculinity. Whereas Stein’s earlier fiction presented more subtle challenges to Weininger, Stein’s experimental poems from the 1910’s and 1920’s explicitly and jubilantly use linguistic innovation to articulate a flexible and feminist transmasculinity.

Abstract:
Citrus Bacterial Canker Disease (CBCD), caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. citri, occurs in many citrus areas of the world. It has been reported in 40 different countries, on 5 continents (Asia, South Africa, Australia, South America and North America). Prior to the 1984 outbreak in Florida, the 4 known strains of the bacterium were A, B, C and Mexican bacterioses. Canker-A or Strain-A, endemic in Asia, was reported in China, India and Java in the early 1800’s, found in Japan in 1899 and in the Philippines in 1914. It affects most citrus species and hybrids. Grapefruit is especially susceptible. Strain-A was introduced into the United States from Japan on trifoliate orange seedlings in 1910. An eradication program was started in 1915 in Florida and the disease was eradicated in 1927. In South America, the Asiatic form was not found until 1957 in Brazil and 1972 in Argentina. In 1979, the A Strain broke out in the commercial citrus area of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Paper published with permission.

Abstract:
Abstract: Among several urban plans designed for Berlin, we find Le Corbusier`s project for the Hauptstadt Berlin 1958 competition, which aimed at thinking the reconstruction of the city center destroyed in the II World War. Corbusier`s relation with Berlin dates back to 1910, when he arrives at the city to work at Peter Behrens` office. So, for him, the plan for Berlin was a rare opportunity to develop ideas about the city that provided one of the largest contributions to his urban design education, and also to develop ideas he formulated forty years before for Paris` center. Besides that, this project was developed almost simultaneously with CIAM`s crises and dissolution, which culminated in the 50`s with the consequent appearance of Team 10. At that moment Corbusier`s universalist approach to urbanism starts to be challenged by CIAM`s young generation, which had a critical approach towards the design methods inherited from the previous generation, associated with CIAM`s foundational moment. From the beginning of the 50`s on, this new generation balances the universalist ideals inherited from the previous generation with individualist ones they identified as necessary to face the new post war reality. Thus, the main goal of this paper is to analyse Corbusier’s design for Berlin and question whether he, at an already mature point of his career, was proposing a plan that answered only the questions that were important to CIAM and to the canonical principles of modern architecture, or if he had also addressed those that belonged to the new generation and Team 10`s agenda, both of them present in the debates of the moment, largely identified as a transitional period. At the beginning of the 19th century, the patriarchal spirit ruled in the craft; a quasi-family relationship was established between the masters and the students. Craftsmen provided themselves protection from competition through associations in guilds and its tradition rules. In the middle of the 19th century, the Decree on Guilds was passed, which regulated labor relations in crafts and trade. At the end of the 19th century, due to the increased import of goods, the situation in the craft has changed, patriarchal relations were disturbed, and there was general dissatisfaction among the workers. Therefore, a huge action was taken for the modern regulation of labor relations, which came in 1910, with the adoption of the Law on Actions. But, despite the modern legal regulation of labor relations, the factual situation in the craft has not changed. Therefore, the paper will point out the basic reasons for the decline of the craft, as well as the normative attempts to save it.

Abstract:
In 1969, S. G. Brush and C. W. F. Everitt published a historical review, that was reprinted as subchapter 5.5 Maxwell, Osborne Reynolds, and the radiometer, in Stephen G. Brush’s famous book The Kind of Motion We Call Heat. This review covers the history of the explanation of the forces acting on the vanes of Crookes radiometer up to the end of the 19th century. The forces moving the vanes in Crookes radiometer (which are not due to radiation pressure, as initially believed by Crookes and Maxwell) have been recognized as thermal effects of the remaining gas by Reynolds — from his experimental and theoretical work on Thermal Transpiration and Impulsion, in 1879 — and by the development of the differential equations describing Thermal Creeping Flow, induced by tangential stresses due to a temperature gradient on a solid surface by Maxwell, earlier in the same year, 1879. These fundamental physical laws have not yet made their way into the majority of textbooks of heat transfer and fluid mechanics so far. A literature research about the terms of Thermal Transpiration and Thermal Creeping Flow, in connection with the radiometer forces, resulted in a large number of interesting papers; not only the original ones as mentioned in subchapter 5.5 of Brush’s book, but many more in the earlier twentieth century, by Martin Knudsen, Wilhelm Westphal, Albert Einstein, Theodor Sexl, Paul Epstein and others. The forces as calculated from free molecular flow (by Knudsen), increase linearly with pressure, while the forces from Maxwell’s Thermal Creeping Flow decrease with pressure. In an intermediate range of pressures, depending on the characteristic geometrical dimensions of flow channels or radiometer vanes, an appropriate interpolation between these two kinds of forces, as suggested by Wilhelm Westphal and later by G. Hettner, goes through a maximum. Albert Einstein’s approximate solution of the problem happens to give the order of magnitude of the forces in the maximum range. A comprehensive formula and a graph of the these forces versus pressure combines all the relevant theories by Knudsen (1910), Einstein (1924), Maxwell (1879) (and Hettner (1926), Sexl (1928), and Epstein (1929) who found mathematical solutions for Maxwells creeping flow equations for non-isothermal spheres and circular discs, which are important for thermophoresis and for the radiometer). The mechanism of Thermal Creeping Flow will become of increasing interest in micro- and submicro-channels in various new applications, so it ought to be known to every graduate student of heat transfer in the future. That’s one of the reasons why some authors have recently questioned the validity of the classical Navier-Stokes, Fourier, and Fick equations: Dieter Straub (1996) published a book on an Alternative Mathematical Theory of Non-equilibrium Phenomena. Howard Brenner (since 2005) wrote a number of papers, like Navier-Stokes, revisited, and Bi-velocity hydrodynamics, explicitly pointing to the forces acting on the vanes of the lightmill, to thermophoresis and related phenomena. Franz Durst (since 2006) also developed modifications of the classical Navier-Stokes equations. So, Reynolds, Maxwell, and the radiometer may finally have initiated a revision of the fundamental equations of thermofluiddynamics and heat- and mass transfer.

Abstract:
Stogodišnjica početka (2014.) i kraja (2018.) Prvog svjetskog rata dala je poticaj za novi val reinterpretacija, komemoracija i recikliranja ranijih predstavljanja. Autor u ovom radu pokušava ocrtati glavne konture savremenih čeških rasprava o Sarajevskom atentatu kroz poseban fokus na prikaze četiri ličnosti povezane s ovim događajem: habsburškog nasljednika prijestolja Franza Ferdinanda, njegove supruge Sofije Chotek, njihovog atentatora Gavrila Principa i njihovog vozača Leopolda Lojka.
