Abstract:

The article examines the origin and development of Russian graphic landscape art, performed in the technique of engraving on linoleum. It covers the period from the early 20th century, the moment the first masters of this direction of graphic art appeared in Russia, until the late 1960s when linocut, the landscape, in particular, reached its prime and acquired its completely individual, unlike any other graphic technique, characteristic. The authors analyze the linocut landscapes of notable artists of the period described starting with the founder, N.Sheverdyaev, and the leading propagandist of linocut in Russia, I.Pavlov. The article describes the distinctive features of engraving and making prints by famous artists of the 20th century, graphic artists, and not only. This is M.Dobuzhinsky, B.Kustodiev, V.Falileev, K.Kostenko, N.Piskarev, later I.Sokolov, P.Staronosov, and many other not so famous artists. The Soviet period is represented by A.Kravchenko, M.Matorin, I.Sokolov, S.Yudovin, and, of course, A.Zyryanov, one of the well-known printers of the 1960s. The linocut technique is well established in almost all types of landscape. These were industrial, agitational works, glorifying the work of Soviet people, colorful sheets, and lyrical, delicate, and poetic works. The architectural and rural landscape occupied an important place in the work of the letterpress masters: in the urban landscape, of course, the images of the two capitals prevailed, which is not surprising since most of the artists studied and worked in Moscow and Leningrad. The authors of the article drew attention to the creative work of N.Lapshin, F.Smirnov, N.Novoselskaya, A.Smirnov, and others. In the article, the authors try to show how versatile and complex the linocut technique, especially colored, is. The authors want to show that the art of engraving on linoleum helped to view the landscape genre in graphics differently and, possibly, influenced the development of the landscape in other types of prints and painting. The authors are trying to prove that linoleum engraving rightfully takes an equal position with woodcut and etching. The works of masters working in this technique are exhibited in all museums in the country.

Abstract:

Abstract The global temperature trends provided by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology are artificially exaggerated due to subjective and unidirectional adjustments of recorded values. The present paper aims to promote the use of the raw stations’ data corrected only for urban heat island formation. The longer temperature records of Australia exhibit significant oscillations with a strong quasi-60 years’ signature of downward phases 1880 to 1910, 1940 to 1970 and 2000 to present, and upwards phases 1910 to 1940 and 1970 to 2000. A longer oscillation with downward phase until 1910 and an upwards phase afterwards is also detected. The warming since 1910 occurred at a nearly constant rate. Over the full length of the long Australian records since the end of the 1800s, there is no sign of warming or increased occurrence of extreme events. The monthly highest and mean maximum temperatures do not exhibit any positive trend. The differences between monthly highest and lowest, or monthly mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures, are all reducing because of urban heat island formation.

Abstract:

Este artículo analiza la magnitud del crecimiento en el sector agrícola antes de la industrialización en Korea. Presenta un análisis que es contrario del punto de vista general sobre la naturaleza del crecimiento económico en Korea, cual es el de que éste fue muy poco en el sector agrícola antes del despegue industrial. Los datos sugieren más bien, que se realizaron grandes inversiones durante la colonización japonesa. Estas inversiones tuvieron altos rendimientos no sólo en términos de producción de arroz sino también en términos de construcción de capacidad institucional y creación de infraestructura. El caso koreano no es una anomalía sino un ejemplo algo singular e interesante de desarrollo agrícola que antecede a una rápida expansión industrial.

O uso de modelos probabilísticos introduz precisão matemática, permitindo estudos mais consistentes de séries históricas de dados. Utilizou-se o modelo "distribuição de valores extremos" (Gumbel) para estimar a probabilidade de ocorrência de temperaturas mínimas absolutas mensais (maio, junho, julho, agosto e setembro) e anuais para Campinas (SP), relativa à série histórica de 1891-2000 (110 anos). O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar as probabilidades de ocorrência de temperaturas mínimas mensais e anuais adversas à agricultura em diferentes subperíodos (1891-1910, 1911-1940, 1941-1970 e 1971-2000) da série histórica. O modelo distribuição de valores extremos apresentou bom ajuste entre as freqüências estimadas e as observadas, independentemente dos meses e subperíodos analisados. Os valores de temperaturas mínimas absolutas médias aumentaram progressivamente de 1891 até 2000, enquanto os valores de probabilidade anual estimados apresentaram grande variabilidade entre os subperíodos históricos analisados. O subperíodo mais recente (1971/2000) apresentou probabilidade (24,2%) muito próxima de 1911/1940 (24,5%) e do período integral de 1891 a 2000 (24,4%). O subperíodo de 1891/1910 apresentou as maiores probabilidades (34,2%) e o de 1941/1970, as menores (18,4%).

Abstract:

The acoel genus Anaperus was established by Graff in 1911 for Amphiscolops gardineri Graff, 1910, making Anaperus gardineri (Graff, 1910) its type species. Since then, six more valid species were described: A. tvaerminnensis (Luther, 1912); A. sulcatus Beklemischev, 1914; A. rubellus Westblad, 1945; A. biaculeatus Boguta, 1970; A. ornatus Beltagi, 2001; A. singularis Hooge & Smith, 2004. A seventh species, A. australis Westblad, 1952, is incertae sedis (Dörjes & Karling, 1975). The genus was placed to family Convolutidae Graff, 1905, until Dörjes (1968) erected the family Anaperidae on the basis of a distinctive male copulatory apparatus. Jondelius et al. (2011) returned it to Convolutidae on the basis of molecular–sequence data.

Bertrand Russell (1872–1970), born in Trelleck, Wales, was the grandson of the first Earl Russell, who introduced the Reform Bill of 1832 and served as prime minister under Queen Victoria. He studied mathematics and philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, 1890–1894, was a Fellow of Trinity College, 1895–1901, a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1908, and was a lecturer in philosophy, 1910–1916. AbstractThe optimal ranking regime (ORR) method was applied to mean summer maximum (TMXS) and mean summer minimum (TMNS) temperature and to cumulative summer cooling degree-days (CDDS) calculated from U.S. climate-division data during 1895–2015. CDDS is proposed as a proxy for growing degree-days for summer corn given their high rank correlation in station data during 1950–2014. The TMXS and CDDS ORR analyses show similar climate-regime patterns. Western and northeastern divisions experienced multidecadal cool periods before 1930 and warm periods after 1990. The 1930s drought appears as decadal warm regimes over the Midwest and Great Plains. Multidecadal TMXS and CDDS temperature cycles are evident over the Southeast, but TMXS and CDDS variation over the Midwest’s Corn Belt agricultural region has been regime free since the early 1940s. By contrast, TMNS regimes consistent with centennial-scale warming trends are found over most divisions outside the Southeast. From the multidecadal regime patterns detected by the ORR analyses, the TMXS, TMNS, and CDDS series of each climate division were tested for significant linear trends during 1910–2015 and 1970–2015. Significant positive TMNS trends during 1910–2015 are found in 48 of the 102 divisions, with some western trend magnitudes being greater than 15% of the twentieth-century climatological mean. During 1970–2015, positive TMXS trends are detected over 39 western and northeastern divisions, but warming TMNS trends are evident nationally. In some cooler western divisions, positive 1970–2015 CDDS trend magnitudes exceed 90% of the climatological mean. Consistent with the ORR analyses, Corn Belt TMXS and CDDS trends are insignificant during 1970–2015.

Las primeras citas de fósiles en la región de Almadén se remontan al trabajo de Le Play (1834), siendo Ezquerra del Bayo (1838) el primero en citar fósiles inequívocamente devónicos, si bien no es hasta 1850 cuando se habla propiamente de "terrenos devónicos". El presente estudio histórico, que abarca el período 1834-1990, se ha basado en una recopilación bibliográfica de las obras que han versado sobre paleontología y estratigrafía del Devonico de la region de Almaden y su posterior analisis. Este, junto con un detallado trabajo de campo, ha permitido la elaboración de un mapa de situación de los yacimientos clásicos presentes en el área, muchos de ellos de localización incierta o desconocida hasta la fecha. Por último, en función de las citas de especies de cada trabajo analizado, se ha procedido a la delimitación y caracterización de siete períodos en el conocimiento de la región: Primera Epoca (1834-1873), Reorganización de la Comision del Mapa Geológico (1873-1910), Primer tercio de siglo (1910-1936), Segundo tercio de siglo (1936-1960), Escuela alemana y Monografía de Almela et al. (1960-1970), Estudios de yacimientos minerales (1970-1980), y Reactivación y Hojas MAGNA (l 980-1990).

Abstract:

This paper does not pretend to present a comprehensive history of nonlinear dynamics. Its purpose is more modest and limited to some historical aspects of this topic. The first part of this paper deals with the early foundations of nonlinear dynamics (essentially the Poincaré and Lyapunov results). The succeeding sections cover the period 1910–1970 and describes the development and contributions of the theory, elaborated by Birkhoff, the Andronov school, and the Krylov–Bogoliubov school. After 1970, the development of new results in nonlinear dynamics has become "explosive". A part of these results is presented in a summarized form in this paper. The last section suggests some possible trends for future research.

This paper documents the presence of 20 species of Fanniidae in Finland. Fannia alpina Pont, 1970 and F. slovaca Gregor & Rozkošný, 2005 are new to North Europe. Fannia barbata (Stein, 1892), F. lineata (Stein, 1892) and F. nigra Malloch, 1910 are removed from the Finnish checklist. The female of Fannia stigi Rognes, 1982 is described from a Finnish specimen caught together with a male. The total number of fanniid flies known from Finland is now 61.

I.We recall the main surveys: J. Herschel (1826), W. Struve (1825), A.W. Burnham and G.W. Hough (1880), R.G. Aitken and W.J. Hussey (1910), R. Jonckeere and T.E. Espin (1910), W.H. van den Bos (1925), R.A. Rossiter (1950). Presently the classical surveys are continuing with P. Muller, W.D. Heintz, and P. Couteau. The interferometric survey with large telescopes is carried out at CHARA.II.The results of old surveys, up to 1950, amount to 700 known orbits out of more than 35000 found binaries. The new surveys since 1965, both visual and interferometric, had checked 4000 new binaries giving already about 30 orbits. The periods are shorter and shorter: the mean period is 200 years for Struve (1825) binaries, 75 years for Aitken’s (1910), 25 years for Couteau and Muller’s (1970), and 7 years for CHARA’s. The number of known orbits increases exponentially with time.III.The “classical” surveys will have to be performed again within fifty years with refractors.The interferometric and aperture syntheses surveys will be able to observe every binary, even those in contact with each other. With HIPPARCOS’ results, astronomers will dispose of a complete set of data for new theories of stellar evolution.

Annak érdekében, hogy a hosszú és középtávú változások egyaránt mérhetők legyenek, négy időkeresztmetszetet választottunk ki (1910, 1970, 2001, 2011). Az összehasonlítást az teszi lehetővé, hogy a települési szinten gyűjtött mutatókat mind a négy időpontra a mai járáshatárok között aggregáltuk. A vizsgálat a fejlettségi különbségek stabilitására mutatott rá: az Osztrák–Magyar Monarchia korának, a szocializmus időszakának és a rendszerváltás utáni évtizedeknek a fejlettségi térképei nagyban hasonlítanak egymásra. Az ország nyugat–kelet tagozódása, a centrum-periféria jellegzetességek, a fejlett és fejletlen térségek markáns elkülönülése tartós jegyei a magyar fejlettségi términtázatnak. A fejlettségi térszerkezetre alapvetően jellemző stabilitást a felfelé és lefelé mozgó járások szűkebb csoportja töri csak meg. Száz év alatt jelentősen javították helyzetüket az idegenforgalomba, a fürdőturizmusba bekapcsolódó térségek, a fővárosi agglomeráció külső övezetében elhelyezkedő járások, a Délnyugat-Dunántúl járásai és egy-két ma is sikeres szocialista iparváros járása. Ugyanakkor a Tiszántúl középső része és Észak-Magyarország sok járása a múlt századelőhöz képest a hanyatlás jegyeit mutatja.

While preparing the part of the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology dealing with Greenfieldia, Alvarez had problems with the absence of information regarding its jugum. GRABAU (1910, in Grabau and Sherzer) described the smooth, subequally biconvex, small shell Greenfieldia whitfieldi, the type species of his Greenfieldia, from the Late Silurian Greenfield Dolomite of northern Ohio. Grabau (1910, p. 149) remarked that the brachidium was unknown, with only the presence of laterally directed spiralia (Grabau, Pl. XXX, fig. 9) being indicated but not discussed in the text. Grabau (1910) considered a questionable assignment of Greenfieldia to the meristelloid Hindella. Boucot et al. (1965, p. H662), Berry and Boucot (1970, p. 155) and Berdan (1972, p. 16) all illustrated the difficulty in discriminating between the Late Silurian Protathyris, whose jugum is known and athyroid in type, and Greenfieldia with its unknown jugum. Jones (1978, p. 10) further emphasized the difficulty in discriminating between Protathyris and Greenfieldia owing to ignorance of the latter's jugum. Modzalevskaya (1979, fig. 7) described a jugum from a form assigned to Greenfieldia. The complex form of the jugum she illustrated, featuring a number of recurving branches, is entirely unlike that of Greenfieldia although relatively similar to that of Protathyris.

Using district population in Spain between 1860 and 1991, recorded approximately every decade, this article examines whether initial population affects subsequent population growth. While such a relationship between these two variables hardly existed during the second half of the nineteenth century, this link increased significantly between 1910 and 1970, although this trend was abruptly interrupted by the Civil War and the autarkic period that followed. The intensity of this relationship decreased in the 1970s, a process that continued during the 1980s. Our findings also stress that agglomeration economies were stronger in medium-size districts, especially from 1960 onwards.

Abstract:

The aim of our study was to quantify sex-specific patterns of smoking prevalence and initiation in 10-year birth cohorts from 1910 to 1989 in Australia. We combined individual data of 385,810 participants from 33 cross-sectional surveys conducted between 1962 and 2018. We found that age-specific smoking prevalence varied considerably between men and women within birth cohorts born before 1960. The largest difference was observed in the earliest cohort (1910–1919), with up to 37.7% point greater proportion of current smokers in men than in women. In subsequent cohorts, the proportion decreased among men, but increased among women, until there was no more than 7.4% point difference in the 1960–69 birth cohort. In the 1970–79 and 1980–89 cohorts, smoking among men marginally increased, but the proportion was at most ~11.0% points higher than women. Our analysis of initiation indicated that many women born before the 1930s who smoked commenced smoking after age 25 years (e.g., ~27% born in 1910–19); compared to at most 8% of men in any birth cohort. The earliest birth cohort (1910–1919) had the greatest difference in age at initiation between sexes; 26.6 years in women versus 19.0 in men. In later cohorts, male and female smokers initiated increasingly earlier, converging in the 1960–69 cohort (17.6 and 17.8 years, respectively). While 22.9% of men and 8.4% of women initiated smoking aged < = 15 in the 1910–1919 cohort, in the latest cohort (1980–89) the reverse was true (21.4% and 28.8% for men and women, respectively). Marked differences in smoking prevalence and age at initiation existed between birth cohorts of Australian men and women born before 1960; after this, sex-specific trends in prevalence and initiation were similar. Understanding these patterns may inform the evaluation of tobacco control policies and the targeting of potential interventions for exposed populations such as lung cancer screening.

Une étude des chroniques de langage parues dans la presse entre 1879 et 1970 permet de dégager trois périodes quant aux attitudes vis-à-vis la langue populaire des Canadiens français. Jusqu'au début du siècle, la perception est plutôt négative. À partir de 1910, on assiste à une entreprise systématique de revalorisation de la langue paysanne, moins contaminée par l'anglais que celle des villes. L'ouvrier remplaçant le paysan comme classe populaire, l'attitude négative refait surface à compter des années 1940. Après la querelle du jouai, on commence lentement à distinguer la langue humiliée des autres formes du français québécois.

The Russian botanist, Konstantin Sergeevic Merezkovskij (1855-1921). established between 1904 and 1910 a new theory about the origin of organisms, the theory of symbiogenesis. It was based on his long-standing research of diatomeae as well as on new results in bacteriology, cytology, and physiology. Little attention was paid to this scientist and his theory which was mainly due to his unusual career, use of the Russian language, political reasons, and the bold way he propagated his theory. Only when Lynn Margulis around 1970 made new contributions to the theory of symbiogenesis was Merezkovskij remembered as the most important forerunner of this idea.

In skill-biased (de-skilling) technological revolutions learning investments required by new machines are greater (smaller) than those required by preexisting machines. Skill-biased (de-skilling) revolutions trigger reallocations of capital from slow- (fast- ) to fast- (slow- ) learning workers, thereby reducing the relative and absolute wages of the former. The model of skill-biased (de-skilling) revolutions provides insight into developments since the mid-1970's (in the 1910's). The empirical work documents a large increase in the interindustry dispersion of capital-labor ratios since 1975. Zainichi Koreans are a unique political product of the Korean Peninsula. They were taken to Japan under the Japanese occupation (1910–45) of Korea and stayed there without becoming naturalized Japanese citizens. Baseball was a mechanism for the children of Zainichi Koreans, who were oppressed on Japanese soil, to overcome the discrimination they were experiencing in their daily lives and assimilate into Japanese society. From 1956 to 1970, South Korean newspapers invited Zainichi Korean children playing baseball to their home country for regular national baseball exchanges. This event provided nourishment for the growth of Korean baseball and served as the only cultural bridge for Zainichi Korean children to experience and understand their motherland, which they had previously only imagined.

Louis Veuillot, bien connu des milieux journalistiques ultramontains, a aussi été reconnu pour son oeuvre littéraire. Les étudiants des collèges classiques québécois ont pu lire ses textes dans le cadre de leur cursus, en incluant les activités parascolaires. Cet article propose d’étudier l’intégration des textes du polémiste à l’éducation littéraire et religieuse de ces jeunes durant trois périodes, 1840-1871, 1910-1930 et 1950-1970. Alors que l’écrivain n’est pas inclus au programme au XIXe siècle, le début du XXe siècle est en quelque sorte l’âge d’or de la diffusion de Veuillot au collège classique, notamment lors des célébrations du centenaire de sa naissance en 1913. À cette époque, l’écrivain est érigé en modèle pour les jeunes, mais les années 1950 sonnent le glas de la diffusion de cet auteur dans les collèges. Néanmoins, durant quelques décennies, il a pu faire partie de la culture livresque des collégiens.

The sequence-specific amplified polymorphism (S-SAP) method was used to genotype 198 Nordic bread wheat landraces and cultivars from the 19th to the 21st centuries. It was shown that theSukkula-9900-LARD retrotransposon primer was highly suitable for resolving closely related wheat materials. Cluster analysis was generally consistent with pedigree information and revealed a clear separation for growth habit but not for countries. A principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) showed a separation into different time periods (before 1910, 1910–1969 and 1970–2003). These results are consistent with the breeding history and pedigree information, indicating that little hybridization has occurred between winter and spring wheat, in contrast to frequent exchange of germplasm between the Nordic countries. Estimates of gene diversity, the PCoA results, and changes in band frequencies across time indicate that plant breeding has led to substantial genetic shifts in Nordic wheat. Diversity was reduced through selections from landraces during the early 20th century, followed by a period of relatively lower genetic diversity, and a subsequent increase and net gains in diversity from the late 1960s onwards through the use of exotic germplasm. Thus, an anticipated loss of overall genetic diversity was found to be negligible, although allele losses have occurred at specific loci.

RÉSUMÉ Les phases d'activité littorale dans un site de la rive sud du Saint-Laurent ont été étudiées à l'aide de la dendrochronologie. L'analyse des dates de formation de bois de réaction chez les arbres déstabilisés sous l'effet de décrochements mineurs survenus au pied des versants forestiers a permis d'établir le cadre spatio-temporel de la reprise d'érosion associée aux débordements récents du fleuve. Deux périodes de hauts niveaux de l'eau semblent avoir particulièrement marqué révolution des rives, les décennies 1920 et 1970, au cours desquelles une régression des franges forestières se serait produite en raison d'une érosion accrue. Lors des périodes intercalaires de bas niveaux, soit autour de la décennie 1910 et de 1930 à 1950, la forêt se serait rapprochée du fleuve en colonisant les sédiments de plage. Depuis 1970, l'amplitude et la fréquence des débordements ont considérablement augmenté. Ce changement de régime du fleuve implique de fréquents débordements d'hiver associés aux variations des conditions pluvio-thermiques, aux ouvrages de rétention des grands lacs et au contrôle de débit par des barrages. Les débordements hivernaux contribuent à favoriser une forte activité glacielle sur le littoral.

Between 1910 and 1970, millions of southern-born Americans migrated to the northern and western regions of the country in search of better opportunities. Some traveled only short distances, leaving Appalachia for nearby destinations in the southern Midwest. Others made the much longer trek to the West Coast. In this article, we use data from the 1920, 1940, and 1970 Public Use Microdata Samples to investigate the distances traveled by male participants in the Great Migration, with a special focus on differences by race, as well as on changes over time. We find that the average distance traveled increased substantially during the Great Migration for blacks and whites alike. However, throughout this time period, white migrants moved significantly farther than black migrants. The greater propensity for white migrants to move west, rather than north, accounts for a good deal of this overall racial variation. Although the difference in distance traveled between blacks and whites narrowed significantly over time, it remained substantial as the Great Migration came to a close. We conclude by highlighting the impact of these differential migration patterns on the composition and social conditions in northern cities.

RÉSUMÉ La lutte contre la mortalité infantile, qui s'est engagée au début du siècle un peu partout en Occident, s'est concrétisée par la mise en place de centres de distribution de lait sain, bientôt transformés en cliniques de puériculture où les mères venaient apprendre comment soigner leurs bébés. À Montréal, ces cliniques, appelées « Gouttes de lait » ont figuré au premier plan des services socio-sanitaires jusqu'au début des années 1970. À l'aide d'entrevues, mais aussi de sources documentaires et statistiques provenant principalement du Service de santé de la Ville de Montréal, cet article se propose de scruter les motivations des femmes qui ont fréquenté les Gouttes de lait montréalaises en distinguant deux périodes, soit 1910-1930 et 1930-1965. Ce découpage chronologique a été en partie déterminé par la nature des sources utilisées pour explorer chacune des périodes, mais il correspond également à des changements d'attitudes importants de la part des mères de famille face au processus de médicalisation de la petite enfance, car c'est à partir des années 1930 que les cliniques se sont véritablement imposées auprès de la population féminine. L'histoire des Gouttes de lait entre 1910 et 1930, de même que les témoignages recueillis, laissent voir cependant qu'il a fallu l'intervention de plusieurs facteurs, comme la baisse de la natalité et l'amélioration générale des conditions de vie, pour que les femmes adoptent finalement certaines des pratiques recommandées par les médecins, à commencer par la fréquentation plus régulière de la Goutte de lait.
