Abstract:
The Late Jurassic nautiloid Somalinautilus antiquus (Dacqué, 1910), previously only known by the holotype from Lower Kimmeridgian strata of Ethiopia, is reported from the Lower Kimmeridgian (Platynota Zone) of Southern Germany. This unexpected record largely expands the known geographic distribution of this species. Another species of Somalinautilus, S. clavifer Tintant , 1994, is recorded for the first time from the Middle Jurassic (Lower Bathonian, Zigzag Zone) of Southern Germany. A short stratigraphic and palaeogeographic review of Somalinautilus occurrences is provided. Faunal migrations of nautiloids over large distances were probably triggered by sea- level highstands and/or palaeocurrents.

Full text
Abstract:
Paramunnid species of Southern Hemisphere cold-water Austronanus Hodgson, 1910 and related genera are characterised by simple, smooth, flattened, rather elongate oval bodies, a broadly projecting frontal head margin, well-developed, short, mostly distally bulging eyestalks with ommatidia, pereonites with lateral margins contiguous, rounded or truncate, and dorsally visible coxae V–VII. Just and Wilson (2004) rejected synonymy of Austronanus with Paramunna Sars proposed by Nordenstam (1933), following a revision of the latter genus. The type species, Austronanus glacialis Hodgson, 1910, is re-described based on topotypic material from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, (the holotype is a small manca). The types of Paramunna dentata Nordenstam, 1933 and P. dubia Hale, 1937 are re-described and the two species referred to Austronanus together with three new Antarctic and subantarctic species, A. aucklandensis, A. gelidus and A. mawsoni. Paramunna patagoniensis Winkler, 1994 is redescribed and made the type species of a new genus, Xigonus. A new genus, Stephenseniellus, is established for two new species from the subantarctic islands south of New Zealand and Australia, S. palliolatipes (type species) from Macquarie Island, and S. serraticornis (originally reported by Stephensen, 1927 as “Paramunna (serrata (Richardson) ?”) from Auckland Island.

Abstract:
Abstract. Reproductive data of 1910 Thoroughbred mares from seven Polish studs were analyzed using linear animal model. The mares were born between 1929 and 1994. The frequency of multiple pregnancies was 3.5% in this population. Fecundity (defined as ratio of number of progeny to number of pregnancies) and length of reproduction were recorded. Heritability estimates of fecundity and the number of pregnancies were 0.03 and 0.07, respectively. Genetic correlation between these traits was −0.42 whereas phenotypic and environmental correlations were close to zero (−0.05 and −0.04, respectively). In general, genetic, phenotypic and environmental trends for fecundity and the number of pregnancies were non-negative. However, these annual effects are highly fluctuated. It may be attributed to the influence of some sires incorporated into population. Hence, a segregation of single locus can be hypothesised.

Abstract:
Many national parks contain private lands and non-park economic functions that can interfere with management purposes. The number and variety of these "threats" depend on the degree to which the boundary of a new park encloses previously settled lands and economic development. Yellowstone is the only example of a major park established before European American settlement; it is largely free of inholdings and non-park uses. By contrast, Glacier National Park, founded in 1910, and Mojave National Preserve, created in 1994, unavoidably incorporated private lands and previous uses. Despite vigorous National Park Service efforts to eliminate them, many remain, and even those removed have left a landscape legacy. The temporal and spatial relationships shown by these latter parks exemplify those found throughout the national park system and suggest parallels with the political creation of nation-states.

Abstract:
Abstract For over 100 years, the US Forest Service (USFS) has developed initiatives to improve safety outcomes. Herein we discuss the engineered solutions used from 1910 through 1994, when the agency relied on physical science to address the hazards of wildland fire suppression. We then interpret safety initiatives of the subsequent 25 years, as the USFS incorporated social science perspectives both into its understanding of emergency fire incidents and its mitigation of vulnerabilities across all fields of work. Tracing the safety programs using a historical sociology approach, we identify, within the agency’s narrative, three recent developments in its organizational safety culture: cultural awareness, cultural management, and cultural reorganization. This article describes how the development of top-down safety initiatives are questioned and shaped by employees who actively influence the trajectory of a safety culture in the USFS.

Abstract:
This paper presents a global review of the current unwieldy concept of the genus Paramunna Sars, 1866. The study is based mainly on large new collections of material from Australia and subantarctic islands south of Tasmania and New Zealand. Of the four genera previously synonymised with Paramunna, Austrimunna Richardson, 1906 is revived (type species A. antarctica), Leptaspidia Bate & Westwood, 1867 and Metamunna Tattersall, 1905 are considered indeterminable, while Austronanus Hodgson, 1910 is not considered part of the Paramunna complex. Forty-three species, 27 new, are treated, mostly from Australia and adjacent subantarctic islands. Fifteen species currently in Paramunna do not belong in this complex. The type genus Paramunna Sars, 1866 comprises four known species, P. bilobata Sars, 1866, P. capensis Vanhffen, 1914, P. integra Nordenstam, 1933 and P. koreana Malyutina & Ushakova, 2001, and four new species. Nine new genera are created based on a cladistic analysis (type species, original combination): Ascionana (A. darwinia, sp. nov.), Epipedonana (E. profunda, sp. nov.), Harrietonana (Austrimunna subtriangulata Richardson, 1908), Kiklonana (Paramunna arnaudi Amar & Roman, 1974), Omonana (O. brachycephala, sp. nov.), Pagonana (Paramunna rostrata Hodgson, 1910), Palanana (Austrimunna serrata Richardson, 1908), Spiculonana (S. platysoma, sp. nov) and Sporonana (S. robusta, sp. nov.). Six species of Paramunna are transferred to other genera in the complex: P. simplex Menzies, 1962 and P.parasimplex Winkler, 1994 to Omonana, gen. nov.; P. dilatata Vanhffen, 1914 to Pagonana, gen. nov.; P. gaini (Richardson, 1913) to Palanana gen. nov.; P. laevifrons Stebbing, 1910 and P. rhipis Shimomura & Mawatari, 1999 to Ascionana, gen. nov. Paramunna shornikovi Malyutina & Ushakova, 2001, is synonymised with P. rhipis. Keys to genera and species (if more than two in a genus) are given. Terminal males (males with elongated cephalon and massively enlarged pereonite 1) are documented in several genera. The distribution of the complex confirms that this part of the Paramunnidae is a Southern Hemisphere, shallow water group. Species previously thought to be circumpolar prove to be species complexes, with each species having a small distribution.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The paper concerns identifying Kondratieff cycles in the economies of Italy, the Netherlands, Germany and France. Studied are the historical periods beginning from the second half of the 19th century based on time series of real per capita GDP. The study is made through construction of econometric models, including the cyclical component. Modeling has helped to identify Kondratieff cycles in the national production. The upward half-wave of the third Kondratieff cycle in Italy emerged in 1897, in the Netherlands — in 1910, in Germany — in 1885, in France — in 1881. The upward half-wave of the fourth Kondratieff cycle emerged in Italy in 1948, in the Netherlands — in 1946, in Germany — in 1958, and in France — in 1855. The upward half-wave of the fifth Kondratieff cycle emerged in Italy in 1989, in the Netherlands — in 1990, in Germany — in 1999, and in France — in 1994.

Abstract:
The thermodynamic solubility product for baryte, determined at standard conditions, from data in commonly used compilations, was compared with published experimental solubility products for baryte and with the solubility products from databases used by the PHREEQC geochemical speciation code and MultiScale, which is often used by oil companies to predict or describe baryte scaling. The values in the various databases agree well with experimental data (10–10.05–10–9.96; Melcher, 1910; Neuman, 1933; Templeton, 1960; Davis and Collins, 1971; Blount, 1977; Felmy et al., 1990), which agree within uncertainty with the values presented in the compilations of Robie et al. (1979), Wagman et al. (1982), Lide (2005), Raju and Atkinson (1988), as well as Nordstrom and Munoz (1994), whose values have the least uncertainty. In solutions of 50% seawater mixed with 50% reservoir formation waters, the data predict baryte supersaturation, both at standard temperature and at the temperatures expected in the reservoir, completely consistent with field observations. This provides confidence that the Pitzer approach for activity correction and the database is valid for investigations of baryte precipitation rates in high ionic strength solutions.
